Packers Draft Strategy Before Free Agency | Mock Draft Monday

Are the Green Bay Packers positioned to steal elite value late in the draft — or should Brian Gutekunst be aggressive and trade up before free agency reshapes the board? In this episode of Mock Draft Monday, CHTV NFL Draft Analyst Newt Westen explores a scenario where the Packers land massive value on Day 3.

I am posting this before listening to the podcast. I honestly have not been impressed with any of your drafts so far. The picture above is intrigueing though because I spend a late round pick on Iowa DT Aaron Graves every mock I do. I also look to tradeback for more picks when I can, trying to get to 10 or 11 because even the extra 7th round picks lets GB lock up any probably very popular UFDA that we would otherwise get outbidded for.
Here it goes:
63. Malik Muhammad-CB-Texas-#52 will be the easiest to move back from-Trade with Buffalo

84. Chris McClellan-DT Missouri-Graves & McClellan both run stop & both had 6 sacks last year

120. Derrick Moore-EDGE Michigan-replace Gary

126. Domani Jackson-CB Alabama-4.2 40 and solid CB

158. Malachi Fields-WR Notre Dame-best hands in draft but won't last this long

169. Trey Zuhn III-OC Texas A&M-All-SEC @ OT/OG/OC-short arms will play OC

200. Sam Roush-TE Stanford-TE is a big need-Draft 1 & sign Charlie Kolar-Ravens

201.DJ Campbell-OG Texas-6'3 330 & 3 year starter @ Texas

220. Markel Bell-OT Miami (FL)-a project with big upside-6'9 340 lbs

236. Kendal Daniels-LB Oklahoma-played LB, Edge, Edge @ 6'4 245 lbs

257. Aaron Graves-DT Iowa- Sleeper & wasn't a combine invite-6-5 300lbs-40 tackles & 6 sacks in 2025

That's fair! I haven't been impressed with any of your drafts thus far either, so to each their own.

That's fair too Newt, a different opinion doesn't make me mad. I like everyone perspectives and I already have had to look up 20+ new players and like most of them.

I don't ever subscribe to the BPA philosophy. It's basically the same as drafting based only on potential. If that was actually the right way for all "Smart" teams to select players, then GB would have selected Shermar Stewart last year. And then we would have had the total disaster that the Bengals had with him. Hard to believe, he had no stats in college and now no stats in the pros.

I guess it's great to look at all the different scenarios for the NFL draft. For me trading up in the draft is as bad as choosing BPA when a team has actual needs to fill. Basically trading up is bad because of what teams usually have to give up to make that move. It's just too expensive, and especially this year where we have no first round pick, it would be foolish to throw away picks when we only have 8 to begin with.

I always subscribe to moving the other way, trading back for more picks or more swings of the bat. THe 2025 draft is a perfect example. To move up would have cost us our #22, our 2025 2nd rounder, and probably a 2026 2nd rounder as well. If we had traded back when no top DTs were available, that would have opened up the draft for us to fill 4 needs, CB, OL, DT, and Edge. WR was a fan popular pick but Golden was not a first round rated WR and Golden was also not the BPA at that time. Trading back woulsd have gained us at least another 3rd round pick and more. Plus Golden would have still been there as well as Jaydin Higgins-WR-Iowa State, who is better for GB as a WR.

I am curious after re-reading your post, did you just say you didn't like any of my drafts because I upset you? You can't possibly not like any of my actual players picks. I do appreciate that you pay attention to posters replies ffor what it's worth.

Thanks Newt I watch on YouTube and enjoy it every week , it helps me learn about College players . The last pick of a Returner might be the most exciting pick .

Appreciate it! And I agree, I would love to see the Packers directly address the need for a return specialist.

Newt,
Enjoy the content.
Could you share your thoughts on a few prospects?
Jacob Rodriguez LB
Josh Cameron WR / Returner
Nadame Tucker Edge.
Where do you think T'Vondre Sweat would slot if he were in this draft class?
Loved the selection of Wetjen.

Love Rodriguez. Limited athlete, but he is a football player through and through.

Only saw Cameron at the Senior Bowl, but I thought he was fantastic there and did a lot to help himself.

Nadame Tucker was fun to watch at the Senior Bowl as well. Putting eyes on him for a full evaluation in a couple weeks. Age will be a concern for him. Turning 25 or 26 I believe this year.

Sweat would probably be DT3 for me behind Banks and Woods. Very similar to where I have McDonald.

Thank you!
Do you think it would be a good idea to try and obtain Sweat? Historically he does not fit Saleh' defense.
