Packers Trade For Safety Anthony Smith

Green Bay has traded for Jaguars safety Anthony Smith, a player the Packers had previously signed and cut prior to the 2009 season.

In a chain of events that defies common logic, the Green Bay Packers have traded for Jacksonville Jaguars safety Anthony Smith according to Adam Schefter of ESPN via Twitter:

We have a trade: Jacksonville traded safety Anthony Smith to Green Bay. Smith was scheduled to start Monday night.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. The Packers signed Smith as a free agent prior to the 2009 season. He spent all of training camp with the Packers last year but was cut on mandatory cutdown date to 53 players, perhaps surprisingly.

Many observers thought that the Packers would keep Smith coming out of training camp last year due to a lack of depth at the safety position. At the time Smith was cut by the Packers last season, Peprah was hurt and they had yet to trade for Derrick Martin. The Packers later cut safety Aaron Rouse after Week 2 of the '09 season further adding to the mystery.

The trade for Smith comes two days before the NFL's trading deadline on Tuesday. It's been speculated by some reporters at ESPN that the Packers could make a play for Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber as well.

General manager Ted Thompson, at least on the surface, seems impervious to public perception, trading for a player he thinks will add to his team despite the fact that he cut him a year ago. Meanwhile, he has yet to trade for a running back, a position many see as a need after Ryan Grant went down with a season-ending ankle injury.

Given the spotty play from Peprah, a move may have been necessitated by a need from more immediate help at the position. From Greg Bedard of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

I'm told the Packers think CB Al Harris will be ready this week, but S Atari Bigby may be further away.

The compensation for Smith is, as of yet, unknown.

UPDATE: The Packers have reportedly given a conditional seventh round draft choice to the Jaguars in exchange for Smith.

It may defy common logic, but it pretty much exemplifies TT logic.

At least he has some form of logic he uses. MM on the other hand...

He knows the system. He's better than anyone else we got back there at the moment.

As long as we didn't give up something stupid for him, this is a great move by TT.

Marion Barber to Green Bay? Well, at least when the linemen fail to open holes for him, he can blast through anyway.

I think Bjack is adequate at RB. At least when he's hitting the hole. Actually looked good on a screen today. If TT trades for a position, I'd like some help at OLB.

yeah, mccarthy is only looking to get 75-80 rushing yards and b jax is capable of doing so. i don't think TT is going to bring in anyone else at that position.

It's not about the yards. It's about not being one dimensional, at least not in the eyes of the opposing D. It's about the threat of a running game.

I don't think this is getting accomplished (didn't watch the game, but that's what happened against WAS)

Could definitely use him for 3rd and short and for goal-line work. Barber is 9/9 on 3rd and short and 4th and short this season; somewhere where we have definitely struggled. Probably not worth whatever the Cowboys would be asking though.

WTF-yeah totally confused, release, and then trade for a marginal player who we had?
Understand the injuries, Can we trade for an official, or even an linesman?
WANTED: offensive line coach! Who can teach run and pass blocking. WANTED: GM who understands we need a running game before Arod goes down! WTF- somethings wrong here, Murphy better start doing his job and turn the vice! I understand injuries on D, but this O has to much potential and should be scoring way more than we are, somethings not right!

Damn. I go away for one weekend and this is what I get? The Packers lose yet another game in OT, and they TRADE for a guy that they could've simply kept? What the hell is going on out here? Wasn't Jue available?

BTW, I have some questions, as I didn't watch the game:
1) Should I?
2) Were we able to field 53 players?
3) When will TT announce Cowher as the new HC?

Thank you.

TT is an idiot. The whole lot should be let go. McCarthy is clueless. I have seen so many dumb moves, he is the laughing stock of the league. His best is the use of the review flag. He never throws it when he should, but always throws it when it makes no sense. His time mangement stinks. Has the team unmotivated and flat almost every week. Get rid of him and TT and let the new management decide about the rest of this feeble coaching staff. By the way, I love how this team can't stop opponents on 3rd and 15, 3rd and 20. What a joke. Time for a change...If they care at all about the fans.

unfortunately it looks like we are gonna be stuck with these idiots for at least another year. even if they lost the rest of their games you know they would just point to injuries as being the only problem this year

Woodson may have had some say in this. Being he was the most upset when we traded Smith and I'm sure he's the most upset today.

Personally I'm not a big fan of Gruden. He talks knowledgeable, but has those shifty eyes like he's always trying to B.S. somebody. Actually, Ron Jaworski calls his bluff alot on MNF.

Cowher took 14 years to win a super bowl.

So if you got 14 years to wait, Cowher would be an excellent choice.

Someone needs to tell TT that it doesn't matter who we put back at safety, if we don't have pass rush it doesn't matter. chad henne picked us apart for god's sake! brad jones is not applying hardly any pressure. we need another OLB. i know TT would never do it, but it's always fun to throw out names. Shawne Merriman may be released on Tuesday...

There's supposedly someone with knowledge of the trade for Anthony Smith that has told a JSO reporter that he was had for a conditional 7th round pick.

A Conditional 7th round pick? Jeesh, it sounds like the Jags valued Smith as much as the Packers did when they released him last off season.

I'm telling you, there's something not right with this guy. Talent? Yes. Discipline? I don't think so.

TT has to be admitting he at least made some sort of a mistake here. Regardless of the fact that he was only valued as a conditional 7th rounder we couldv'e in theory had him for nothing. Also even though he's not so good, he most likely is better than Charlie Peprah, I mean he was scheduled to start tomorrow.

NEWS FLASH, Defense is not losing these games. I can't put into words how far off I think TT is. TT adds a defensive player in a trade???????????

Answer for the Packers at 3-3 is trading TT's draft pick for a player we cut. Not a running back or an offensive tackle something for the offense that is at the root of the problem.

I think there is truth to what you're saying, but defense is still a problem when the offense doesn't get the ball as much. the last 2 games, we barely had the ball in the 3rd quarter.

But the defense only gave up 13 points to Washington and stopped the Dolphins in over time, giving A-rod a chance to live up to the accolades

This is really fueling criticism that Thompson waits until the 11th hour to solve a problem that's been around in the preseason.

Someone explain to me why Will Blackmon is a free agent. Are the Packers allowed to resign him? Is it a possibility? I think we have a need, and he knows the system.

I'm not sure Blackmon is completely healthy yet ....... Otherwise he'd be on someone's roster by now ...... He twitted after he was sent packing that he'd love to return to GB when he's 100% ..... Could still happen, as a returner, IMO.
