Packers trade for OL Darian Kinnard

The Packers will send the Eagles a 2027 6th round selection.

The Packers are reportedly sending a 2027 sixth round pick to the Eagles for offensive lineman Darian Kinnard.

Kinnard is a former fifth round selection of the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2022. After two years with the Chiefs, which featured stints both on the roster and on the practice squad, Kinnard signed a futures deal with the Eagles after the 2023 season.

The Packers take on his $1.03 million salary for the 2025 season.

He holds the rare distinction of being a three time Super Bowl champion, winning two rings with the Chiefs prior to winning one with the Eagles this past year.

Kinnard is considered to be a versatile offensive lineman but is listed as a tackle. He appeared in two games with one start for the Eagles last season.

The 6' 5" 222lb 25 year old played collegiately at Kentucky where he earned consensus First-Team All-American status as a senior.

Wow! That's a skinny O-lineman!

Seriously, this seems like a sign that 1.) the Packers realize Anthony Belton isn't ready to be a good backup yet, and 2.) they want to win now.

I'd say it means they can't even field a proper O-line unit at the moment. Frankly, I'm not sure if they have even 8 "roster worthy" guys who are healthy and ready to go. They usually keep 10.

Yes, it was a rough training camp for the O-line depth. They are still only six deep, with Belton as a shaky #7. I'm sure there are other teams with less depth, but this is not where the Packers wanted to be. That's why you make trades like this. If it addresses the problem, I'm all for it.

My guess is that if Belton were to play at this point, they'd put a TE on his shoulder most snaps like they did when they broke in Nijman a couple years ago.

Take a look at those projected to make the 53 (and admittedly there's a fair amount of gray fuzzy at the bottom of the OL group) and the amount of NFL game experience on this roster is scarily small...and mostly confined to those projected to start. The weak showing by those brought in for OL depth is scary. My understanding was that Glover showed well in off-season work and they were expecting him to make a step forward, but he's hurt.

Admittedly, Kinnard doesn't have a lot of game snaps, but he's played on some very well-coached teams and with outstanding OL coaches, and will raise the floor of the OL room. I think they get this year and an RFA year out of him next season. Kinnard can play both positions on the right side.

The question is: what does this signal for cutdowns and how they want to run the OL on game day?

PFF grades for KInnard are slightly above average for run blocking (low 60's) and slightly below average in pass pro (mid 50's). Not too bad for a #8 (or #7) O-lineman and miles better than Monk, Jennings and Telfort. Much happier with the O-line depth - at least they go eight deep now.

With his limited game experience, I think it begs the question of whether his pass blocking improves as he develops game chemistry with his line mates. His calling card out of college was as a mauler, but with lazy hands and feet. I like this move, too.

He has only had something like 70 regular season game snaps and a hundred preseason game snaps so he is inexperienced. Hopefully that means he has room to grow as a pro and improve individual techniques as well as gain chemistry with his fellow linemen. I like the mauler part as GB seems bent on becoming a power rush team (which I love).

Looks like one of Gute's typical churn the bottom third of the roster moves. Tomorrow is cut down day so we'll see who is impacted by this trade.

I don't see anyone after the starters, Morgan, and Belton that couldn't be let go.

This is another sign.

When last season ended, one of the big reasons was our offensive line just didn't have the depth we needed.

We've released Myers. Resigned/extended Tom. Acquired Banks. Drafted Belton. And now, we've traded for Kennard. Much, Much deeper and better Oline than last year. And we're playing 2TEs more than before.

Meanwhile, we're bring back Jacobs&Co. and I think that early in the season, especially, we're going to run over people. Because we can.

I don't mind using an xtra OL or TE in the run game, but despise it in the pass game, as it has been able to limit our number of targets for QB1 in the past leading to losses in the playoffs due to ease of defensive coverage and turnovers. I believe this is why Gute has been picking larger OL to compete with the likes of Eagles and our previous issues with SF DL. We should end up with what is best in either run it or pass it and win either way....I would have liked for Gute to pick-up a good #1 WR also....but should be a good 1-2 between Golden and #11 as well as Jacobs and Kraft. Looking forward to Watson returning and hopefully putting enough yards and points up to get paid...somewhere. GPG
