Packers sign WR Jayden Reed to three year extension

The deal reportedly includes $20 million guaranteed.

The Green Bay Packers have locked up one of Jordan Love’s top targets, agreeing to a three-year contract extension with wide receiver Jayden Reed worth $50.25 million in new money. According to agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ian Grutman, the deal includes $20 million guaranteed.

Reed has quickly become a key piece of Matt LaFleur’s offense with his versatility, explosiveness, and ability to create big plays both as a receiver and runner. By securing Reed long-term, the Packers continue investing in their young offensive core and ensuring Love has another trusted playmaker in Green Bay for years to come.

I'd have expected the Packers to give Watson a longer contract before Reed. I'm not on board with this. Golden and him are essentially the same and they need to get Golden on the field more. What does that mean for Watson? I wouldn't have thought they could sign both but maybe they will. Would they trade Watson this draft for a 2nd? I hope not, but odd to me signing Reed first.

Shorter, easier deal gets done first. (I suspect it's really a two year deal) Watson's extension will most likely be more significant. That's how I read it anyway.

MooPack....

Basically, Reed signed for #2 receiver money, which makes sense.

Not sure how they are viewing Watson, but if they sign him (which they should), i'd imagine it will be for around wr #2 money also.

If Golden flourishes, and turns into receiver #1 like Guter is praying he will.
By the time he has to pay him, a decision will then be made on Watson and Reed.
I would think in 2 years, one of them will be gone, under my scenario.

Maybe the Packers still want to sign Watson, but aren't sure if they can afford him.
Maybe they wanted to make sure they at least kept Reed.
I hope they keep both, but there is a limit to how much I'd pay Watson. He's worth more than Reed, but not much more than $20 million per year, IMHO.
***
The Packers are good at finding WRs. I don't want too much turnover at any position, but at the same time I wouldn't sign Watson at or near highest-paid at his position.
I'm glad to make guys rich, but not necessarily richest at their position. I want guys who will take a little less for the good of the team. That's a good indication of character.
Unless you're a top QB, or of the elite caliber of Parsons, I don't think the Packers should pay at the highest level. Generous, but not that generous.
I'm a little wary after the situation with Jaire in the sense of tying up too much salary cap in too few players.

Golden and Reed are not the same player whatsoever. Reed is a swiss army knife who has really solid running ability. Golden is a perimeter receiver. They both have their skillsets and they will be huge pieces of this offense moving forward.

I like your thoughts.

They aren't the same, but they share traits.
They both get open, and they both have awesome catch rates.
Reed is over 70% which is elite.
Golden is mid 60's, he'd be over 70 with a few better throws from Love.

I think the Packers (hopefully) will include Golden in more game planning and attempts, like around 80-90?.
From what i've seen, Golden has serious skills.

So you take Reed, Golden, and Musgrave, you have a deep triple threat, and some other role guys.
This offense is going to come down to the O line
Passing and running.

If the O line is solid, the sky's the limit with this offense if Golden stays the course, and Reed and Musgrave stay healthy

The Packers cannot extend Watson until fall of '26 due to some NFL contract rule, its been well publicized, I think its One Year after his last extension. I don't know how they'd not want to keep him, as I think he developed more, and took a bigger step up over last season than he had in all his time before that.
I would hope that when it comes to money Watson remembers all the time GB waited and stood by him when injured but it seems like his Dad has a lot of influence (and an opinion) over him, that may not be a good thing for GB.
If they don't (or can't) extend him early and he picks up where he left off in '25 and improves on that in '26, they won't be able to afford him.

How are Golden and Reed "essentially the same"?

I honestly don't understand this- am I misunderstanding who you're comparing Golden to?

Wow...on draft-day.
I actually felt he was more replaceable, and didn't anticipate him being the one to receive an extension.
Seems like a fairly affordable deal given the exploding market for WR.

I think it's probably been agreed upon, but they're using this opportunity to make it harder to antiicpate what they'll do.

I think a lot of people have forgotten what Reed looks like with the ball in his hands in space.. he's capable of taking over a game.

By today's ridiculously inflated WR contracts, this could turn out to be a great deal a year or two from now. One less contract to have to worry about moving forward. Good move!

Cap hell is a myth—every team seemingly manages their cap. The 9’rs spend like Imelda Marcos and never fear any alleged cap consequences.

that the guy was on the block.
With Wicks?
And now he's a packer for 3 years?

What seems odd is you having insider knowledge that Reed was actually on the trade block. Another oddity is you knowing the specifics of Reed's new contract that doesn't allow them to move on at any time.

Very nice. I've been hoping they would sign both Watson and Reed to long-term contracts, and now they've got one of them.

I'm sick of the churn at the WR position, which I don't think was really intentional anyway, it was just because they didn't have anyone for awhile who was worth a second contract. Then suddenly they had three (Doubs, Watson, and Reed), but they didn't have room for Doubs.

Like you, Greg, I too was a little sick of the churn, but after drafting Golden, it was necessary to sort things out to know where to go moving forward, and Reed's early injury last year even stalled that a bit.
As much as I would hope they can extend Watson too, we can't forget that Tucker Kraft is entering his 4th year with no 5th year option available to GB.
Kraft could be the guy that resets the TE market price in the NFL like has now happened with WR's. Get Him Signed now, before someone else resets that market!

I like it a lot.
We can't let go of everyone like with Doubs and Wicks. We need some vets.
Reed has the potential be an all-pro, or at least close to it.
He can take it to the endzone on any given play.
It's good for overall morale for the players see some of our guys get second contracts.
Reed has gotten hurt, but we have to take reasonable risks on some of our guys staying mostly healthy going forward.
It's a fair price for both parties, a win-win.
Upbeat news as we head into the heart of the draft.

I don't know for fact, obviously.

But i don't see Watson going anywhere...yet
All indications are the Packers love him, and vice versa.
Pay Reed and Watson #2 money, and Goldens on a rookie deal.
It just works, for awhile.

Now if Golden becomes solid #1, then in a couple years we'll be revisiting the subject.

If they all can't stay relatively healthy, maybe that's a conversation, we probably don't want to have, down the line.

Tucker Kraft is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and we've already (painfully) seen what we have without him!
He's at the top of my list of the need for an extension!
