Packers Sign LB Wilhelm, Release LB Simpkins

The Packers have signed eight-year veteran linebacker Matt Wilhelm and released linebacker Maurice Simpkins.

The Green Bay Packers have signed linebacker Matt Wilhelm. That's the word from Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette via Twitter:

Wilhelm is an inside backer. ... Packers also will release LB Maurice Simpkins, according to a source.

Wilhelm is a eight-year veteran of the NFL having entered the league in 2003 with the San Diego Chargers. He was a regular starter as recently as 2007 when he started 14 games, had 97 tackles, 3 interceptions, 4 passes defensed and 1 sack.

He was signed by San Francisco last season and played in 11 games but was cut in the final roster cutdown prior to this season.

The recent acquisitions of Wilhelm and fellow linebacker Diyral Briggs could indicate that cornerback Al Harris and safety Atari Bigby may still not be ready to return to action.

If either Harris or Bigby or both were to be activated this week, the Packers would still have to make a corresponding roster move to clear space for them.

It's possible the Packers could put Simpkins back on their practice squad if they make room for him.

This simply has to be a move in the right direction. I loved that Simpkins got his chance, and will continue to get opportunities, but he wasn't much.

It sounded like Harris was closer than Bigby was last week so if i had to pick one to be activated this week it would be Harris. I'm guessing one will be activated since they still have open spot

Just read on NFP that Obiozor was released by the Chargers today. Wonder if that means one of these latest pickups will only last a few hours?

With Pops and Neal going on IR, there is still one roster spot open for either Harris or Bigby.

Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that the Packers are signing a third linebacker, however.

Hard to believe. 9 LBs on the 53 (about usual) and 9 DBs. Adding another LB, and either/or Bigby/Harris, and two others would need to be cut. I could see Francois, but then whom else?

mccarthy said in pc that b jones suffered a shoulder sprain in the game...no one asked about it ....shouder sprais could be serious and judging by all these moves he can be out for a while

And there hasn't been one injury this year--not. one.--that hasn't been worse than we were originally led to believe.

I like Simpkins, but isn't he like 28 or 29? Still has potential though.

Every time a Packer gets injured McCarthy calls it a "sprain." So, Jones's shoulder is likely in pieces and MM will soon say it was "worse than we thought."
