Packers sign C Sean Rhyan to three year extension
Rhyan has played all three interior offensive line positions for the Packers.
By PackerAaron

The Packers have reached an agreement on a three-year contract extension with offensive lineman Sean Rhyan, according to NFL Media. The new deal is valued at $33 million and could rise to as much as $39 million with incentives.
Rhyan was originally selected by Green Bay in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. After logging just a single special teams snap as a rookie, he began carving out a role in 2023, appearing in 12 games—primarily at right guard. His development continued the following season, when he stepped into the starting lineup and took over as the Packers’ full-time right guard in 2024. In 2025, he started seven games at center after a season ending injury to Elgton Jenkins.

They pretty much had to...
Unfortunately, this probably makes it less likely that the Packers will bring in FA vet.

Think about this: why would someone from outside the system necessarily be better than Rhyan?

Well, I did say they pretty much had to bring Rhyan back, I didn't say someone from the outside would be better, and I didn't say that the FA vet had to be at Rhyan's position ....

Several guys out there who are more experienced and have a lot more film to scout than Rhyan, but McGovern and Biadasz were already scarfed up.

Good move , Rhyan has the lowers and bulk to move big body's , snapped well better than Jenkins ... something to work with

Also, with only 7 games of experience at C, it would seem that improvement is likely/hopefully.

There were a number of bad snaps from Rhyan.
I hope he improves in year two at center.
I would have liked the Packers to look to FA or the draft for a solution at C.
$11m/year is the high side of average money for a starting C, so it's not a horrible contract, but I think Rhyan, at least as of today, is a slightly below average starting Center.
I suppose there is value in his having experience at guard in our offense, as well, but Rhyan is a player I haven't been completely sold on.

Who said he’s playing center ? He has experience across the line . They could still draft a center and move him back to guard .

Pete Dougherty reported that the Packers intend to use him at C.

It's a fair point, GreenandBold. However, I wasn't sold on Rhyan as the long term solution at RG coming into this season, either- I had him pegged as a guy who'd I would like to keep as a depth piece is the money was right, but I wouldn't have wanted to commit to him for vet starter money unless he had an impressive 2025 season. I think he has quite a bit to prove yet. I guess he has bought himself a couple years to do just that. Hoping for his continued improvement.

I don't know. Makes me think we are keeping Banks also. So we return 4 of the starting 5. Put Morgan at LT for Walker. Jacobs better be working on that lateral first step. I sure hope this isn't the game plan.

Unless the Packers signed Rhyan so they could jettison Banks, limiting turnover on the OL. Maybe they see a cheaper vet FA or draft G that can play right away? Honestly, I think they're going to restructure Banks' roster bonus and cross their fingers.

Highly doubt if they would jettison Banks dobber it really wouldn't make sense. Some UFA play better there second year after getting more situated to there new environment. Lets hope for the same with Banks.

They over-paid.
(It's 6-9 mil for a starter.)

We'll find out next week. A few C out there worth having, several obvious suitors to bid up contracts. I think we're going to be surprised what an experienced vet C is going to get...if Biadasz and McGovern are indicators.
I haven't seen a breakdown on the deal, but my guess is Rhyan's 2026 cap hit will be in the $6-7M range, and there'll be a chance to get out after '26.
I think this might also be an attempt by Gute to protect their comp picks in '27 by not chasing an outside guy.

I agree it's a slight overpay (for a center).
I'm just trying to figure out how you shifted gears to be concerned about overpaying when just two hours ago you said you thought Gute should have paid Quay Walker $15 M for 2026.

I'm not sorry they signed him.
Just thought Gute over-paid him.
He wasn't a True center, until last year.
And Based on what Myers got. ---
Still- the supply and demand was there.
They'll rework his contract later -
I say Gute will regret not paying Quay Walker.
Especially if they don't draft a Ilb.

Some might argue Myers isn't a true C, either.

Good for him. This was a kid who had trouble making the step to the pros. Had self confidence issues upon arrival. Referred to Kenny as Mr Clark. Did the PED dance and learned from it. He's worked hard and earned this contract. Happy for the young man.

I think he's had to work his way out of the coach's doghouse as a result, too.

Signing Rhyan to a contract to play center has some good and some disappointment associated with it. Kind of like when you were a kid and your grandmother sent you a birthday card and there was a dollar inside...not all bad by any means, but it would have been better to open the card and find an Abraham Lincoln.

I'm not a Rhyan believer, myself, so that 3/$33M feels really high for a guy who has very limited starts and practice time under his belt at the position (Jenkins actually rated better via PFF)...especially in light of contract projections. It might be that the Packers didn't feel there was anyone worth having on the open market that would've cost less and given them similar play (or better). It could also be the Biadasz deal might prove to be a bellwether for anyone worth having at C in FA.
I tend to agree that Rhyan could get better given the chance to focus on C this offseason, but hey, his PFF scores ranked better than Josh Myers (who got a 2-year, $11M extension from the Jets). IMO, Belton (experience, off-season focusing on G) and Banks (health) should be better in 2026, and if Rhyan settles in the interior OL should be improved. C is the linchpin of the OL, but the Packers struggled after Tom got hurt--he's the guy I'm watching. Chunk by chunk, Gute is spackling the holes in his roster and giving himself latitude to be more opportunistic at draft time.

They just restructured Banks from 24.8 to 7.7 and 9.5 roster bonus ( there's your money dobber ) and there's your starting five for next year. Now Gute get to work on depth !!!

I would not have signed Rhyan for that amount of money but we don't yet know the details of how and when the Packers can get out of the contract and for how much. If I'm the Packers I would still look to draft a I would still look to draft a Center in the upcoming draft. someone who could take over for Rhyan in the event he is injured or who could take over by next season if Rhyan does not improve in 2026. It's also possible that Rhyan could return to RG if Tom is compromised due to his injury and Belton needs to move to RT.
while I'm not crazy about retaining Rhyan it does give Gute some options for the draft and in case of OL injuries during the 2026 season. Also this leaves open the possibility for the Packers to make Banks a cap casualty for this season along with Jenkins and Gary. We'll see. Thanks, Since '61

I think this takes them from needing to draft a C to start or who is a year away to looking for a player who can back up the 3 IOL positions and has a chance of growing into a starter at one of the three spots--maybe LG?

Rhyan could have garnered more than 11 M/yr on the open market. Look @ what is being talked about for R Walker--20+M.
On the positive side, teammates say Rhyan is very intelligent. centers need to be the brain of the OL.

I was very happy when GB drafted Rhyan and always thought worst case they would slide him to G but surprised he became a center. One TC that has him focused on center can/ should make a substantial difference in his performance. We will see...
