Packers Select DE James Looney In 2018 NFL Draft, Round Seven

Packers Select DE James Looney In 2018 NFL Draft, Round Seven

With their seventh-round pick (232nd overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select player James Looney, DE, California.

Measurables / Combine:

4.89s 40-yard dash; 28  reps bench press; 35.5-inch vertical jump; 113-inch broad jump; 7.32s 3-cone drill; 4.37s 20-yard shuttle.

Career Notes:

The big defensive lineman initially started his career with Wake Forest, then transferred to Cal following his freshman season. He redshirted in 2014 due to NCAA transfer rules. Once he got on the field at Cal in 2015, he never came off. He started for Cal from 2015 through 2017, missing only one game. He brought down many running backs and a few quarterbacks from the interior of the line at Cal, finishing his career with 130 tackles and 8.5 sacks.

Scouting Report:

CHEESEHEADTV.COM did not cover James Looney this offseason.

CBSSPORTS.COM: Tall, somewhat lean interior defensive lineman with impressive athleticism. Needs to get much stronger in the NFL to deal with doubles and more powerful guards. Hands are light.

Commentary:

In the seventh round, with action winding down, Gutenkunst grabbed an athlete who fell in the Packers’ lap at a position that does not have immediate need. While Kenny Clark and Mike Daniels have the interior of the line handled, it could help to have a guy like Looney grow into a rotational pass rusher from the inside to give them a breather. Looney compares to Datone Jones who was a productive backup in his rookie contract with the Packers a few years ago.

LOL. I was about to make the same joke?

As long as he doesn't think that TSA likes jokes either...

Datone was never used properly by Capers or just didn’t fit his scheme. Pettine used players like him very differently.

Another SPARQ standout athlete. Brian LOVES those guys.

I do applaud trying to add athletes to this roster. Still need more speed on O.

Question: The Packers official site often has people asking the new guys questions on their Twitter site. A common question is "What music do you listen to?"
You have to wonder if this guy just says, "Looney Tunes". :)

What if he said "Cannibal Corpse"...

James Looney...I like to watch his defense strategy, played in all 36 games with 35 starts in his three seasons at Cal, recording 130 tackles (56 solo), 20½ tackles for a loss, eight sacks, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
