Packers Safety Sean Richardson Reportedly Cleared to Return
From Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Twitter:
#Packers S Sean Richardson (neck) said team doctor has cleared him to resume his career. Said 5 out of 5 doctors agreed it's safe to return.
— Tom Silverstein (@TomSilverstein) October 23, 2013
Richardson is not practicing yet and remains on PUP, but said he is more than ready to return and is just waiting for the go-ahead.

It's hard to say what's keeping the Packers from allowing Richardson to return to practice, except that they have time on their side. The Green Bay safety had fusion surgery on his neck after his season ended a year ago.
The Packers have a five-week window that opened last week (Oct. 16 being the first day of practice that week) for Richardson to begin practicing.
Once Richardson begins practicing, a separate three-week window opens in which they must either activate him, place him on injured reserve or cut him.
The Packers would have to clear room on their 53-man roster in order to elevate Richardson, should they choose to do so.

Wow!! Wow!! Wow!! This is certainly an unexpected suprise and a great one at that. I was not expecting this guy to ever play again. He could also factor into our defense upgrading our safety position since McMillion has been having an awful second year so far. This guy is big and the fact 5 out of 5 doctors cleared him tells me he can just play without worrying about getting hurt. I'm hoping for the best for this guy.

I always wanted to see what Richardson can do. Hopefully he can play without worry. Jerron McMillian, you just got put on notice.

What do you reckon are the chances he makes the 53? he seems to have been out for ages. From memory he was a very solid tackler and special teams player.

That's sounds like McMillian. I don't remember much about Richardson either, but if he can roam and play good in space (unlike #22) he'd be an instant upgrade. I hope we can find out. I like the measurable.

I love it. This kid can play. Keep Banjo and Richardson and get rid of McMillan and Jennings

I lika da Banjo.

What's better than one banjo? How about two dueling banjo's!! Oh, yeah, it's Richardson vs. McMillian. What more could you ask for. May the best banjo player win!!

Haha did I seriously just click on that.

I would say a certain player is on notice, we all know who that is too.

He's been on notice. He got his role as the dime back was taken by Hyde last week. He won't be released IMO, but next year he better take a step up or he'll be released. They'll give him at least that chance to earn a roster spot.

Wow, 5 out of 5 doctors agreed? They can't even get 5 out of 5 dentists to recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum, so I take this as a medical miracle!
I'm guessing the Packers would like to stagger their PUP returnees a bit, so that any activations and corresponding roster moves (cuts or moves to IR) can factor in any future injuries. That said, Safety is sure one position we could use some help with. As much as I like him, it would be nice if we could trade CJ Wilson to a D-lineman needy team for a mid- or late-round pick if we need to free up a roster spot. When is the trade deadline?

It will be richarson for bush

Ok so this guy all of the sudden is cleared to play after ...what a broken neck?..and we think he's just gonna jump over all these guys with experience? Whooaaaaa now ...whoa.
October 23, 2013 at 10:51 pm
Not a broken neck or no one would let him play.
October 23, 2013 at 11:04 pm
I agree tho... I don't see Richardson beating anyone out right now. He'll be lucky to get on the roster this season. Most likely they IR him and give him a good look next year.
October 23, 2013 at 11:21 pm
If they do put him on IR, (and its true that all his doctors have cleared him) then it's ONLY because of the J-Mike neck injury and the media storm surrounding that. This defense has been pining for a SS the kind of measurables this kid has. I bet our pass defense gets better in small part due to him being an enforcer (or at least having the potential to) Can he REALLY be that much worse than Jennings and McMillan?! REALLY?!?!

Richardson is as far from ready to start as McMillan. He never played a deep safety position in college either. He was used like an extra LB at Vandy. He was a box Safety almost exclusively. How is he going to be ready to contribute as the kind of Safety the Packers want? Capers wants his Safeties to be interchangeable so as to be able to disguise his coverage's. What they want and need is another Safety that is more like Burnett, who was technically the SS when he and Collins were able to play together.
Richardson is a terrific athlete like McMillan and has a physicality to him but he is not ready to play in coverage any more than McMillan has been, especially w/ missing all this time due to the injury.
He could be a valuable ST contributor, again this year if he gets on the roster, but isn't ready in coverage which is McMillans Achilles heal also.

OH KUDOS CHEESEHEAD TV BRETHREN!!!!! for finally realizing what ive been preachin since free agency and the draft last spring! jennings and mcmillian gotta go!!! then we will have ONE FINE DEFENSE!! i do agree sean r prbly wont play this year, but damn... that kid looks like a young steve atwater(doesnt mean he can play like him)but as stated,he has got to be better than those 2 clowns!! kudos also to (ONE DOM CAPERS) for at least putting hyde in for mcmillian on the dime pkg and also starting to lean towards banjo over jennings!! if this defense gets healthy,it can be VERY SPECIAL!!!!
October 24, 2013 at 04:58 am
agreed stroh, who knows if he will ever be a starting caliber safety, but boy,he looks the part.also agree that morgans mate should be interchangeable, which is why i advocate hyde as a strong possibility, he's solid in coverage, great instincts, willing tackler, and decent speed for safety, pretty much everything jennings isnt.

I think you haven't seen a lot of our recent addition at safety Hump ...his name is Chris Banjo and he cracks heads.
October 25, 2013 at 01:25 pm
agreed, banjo looks pretty sharp, but weve only seen sample size, guy can hit and he sure seems to be fairly tight in coverage. keeping fingers crossed
