Packers Reportedly Hire Tight Ends Coach

FOX Sports reports the Packers are hiring the Cleveland Browns' former tight ends coach.

Alex Marvez has the goods:

This is an intriguing hire.

Angelichio interviewed for the Browns offensive coordinator opening last offseason. He did solid work with the tight ends in Cleveland, most notably veteran Gary Barnidge who posted a career year with 79 receptions, 1,043 yards and 9 touchdowns in 2015.

No word yet on who will replace Sam Gash as running backs coach.

I would love to get a good TE for coach Brian to coach.

What was Gary Barnidge before last season? He came out of nowhere and with a QB situation that was not conducive to a player "emerging" in that way. I like this hire, even if we don't have a Gary Barnidge hiding on the roster (maybe Kennard Backman or Mitchell Henry?).

That was awfully fast. I doubt if they even interviewed anyone else. Must have been planning this for awhile.

Was thinking the same. Since when have they acted so quickly. It hasn't even been a week. Good sign. Shows they have seen what was wrong this year sooner than we have given them credit.

That was fast. His Browns bio says he's been a Oline/TE coach for the last 15 years, so at least he's got the training and history

I don't anticipate seeing many MM haters commenting on this article. Funny...

Till you find out that he was originally a coach at Pitt, McCarthy's coaching "alma mater" (though as far as I can tell they didn't overlap at Pitt). I don't have an issue with this but I know some who are critical of McCarthy for only hiring people he knows.

Never mind the fact that he helped groom this 8 year vet TE, who none of us ever heard of, to his best season ever -- right??

Way off.

I just feel MM took way too much unnecessary b/s this season from fans and media. The same people who are quick to criticize are the last ones to give props.

I was one who did criticize McCarthy and for the most part feel it was well deserved and to tell you the truth wouldn't have minded seeing him replaced.

Best thing McCarthy did this season was point out to the press and Thompson HE NEEDS MORE. I mean what other GM continues to completely ignore positions of need??? Had Jon Schneider stayed and TT left McCarthy would have won 3 SB by now. Thompson can't ignore Free Agency this season. This team is too close and Rodgers keeps getting older. I still think Rodgers could win at least 2 more, but he needs F'ing help!

Last thought... Peppers is considering retirement. With the way he played this past year he showed he's still got it. In a situational role next season he could have double digit sacks again but I think he's waiting to see what TT does. At 36 would you put your body through that when the GM does ZIP to improve your team? I wouldn't. I'd hope they cut me and go to a team who's doing EVERYTHING to get better.

Fair enough, Drealyn. I am a supporter of MM in general, but I confess that my faith in his overall ability has been disturbed (would not say shaken - just disturbed) by this season. There are things that concern me, but I am content to give MM a year to effect necessary changes. I do believe that MM never lost this team. They played hard for him against Arizona.

@Reynoldo It's not a problem to criticize MM. I have myself throughout the season. But as ugly as the season looked (it was pretty ugly) and still go 10-6 and win a playoff game on the road says a lot.

Ummmm, I was actually supporting McCarthy saying that. Personally I don't understand your undying faith in McCarthy. His playoff record sucks when you take away 2010 and I'm not one of those that give MM and TT a pass because they won a SB 3, 4, 5, 6 years ago, not with AR and Brett Favre as the only QB you've had. It IS about Championships right?

No one is giving him a pass. But to suggest he should be fired for one fluke of a season is insane. Yes, this season was extremely frustrating. Yes, it seemed like this team was headed for a one-and-done. But guess what? They fought hard to the end with who they had available and missed out on a few game changing plays. You point out a coaching mistake and I'll point out 2 player mistakes.

My faith comes from witnessing this team play when HEALTHY. Enough said.

Given that TE production on the Browns was really good the past couple seasons, with less than stellar QB play and generally a pretty bad offense, I think this could be a good hire. At the very least, I think our TEs will run better routes in 2016 than they did in 2015...

Good pick, but they still need to draft a TE early, or at least rounds 1-4. We could get two compensatory picks in the 4th round for House and Williams.

TT should not waste a pick on a TE due to need. I am okay with drafting a TE but only if the value is there.

Did Linsley regress this year? I have not read any articles about whether he did so, and if so, the nature and extent of this regression.

Once the new tight end coach see R Rogers and Quarles I'm sure he will regret his decision to sign on. Not like he can teach either be to be faster and surerer handed.

For the Record, I think MM is a Great Coach. I don't have nearly as much Praise for TT.

For your info: On this day in 1959, the Green Bay Packers hired the Great VINCE LOMBARDI!!
