Packers Question of the Day: Takeaways From The Loss

The Packers haven't won in Pittsburgh since 1970. That trend continued Sunday night after their loss to the Steelers, giving them a sixth on the season.

Still, the Packers managed to put up a fight for nearly 60 minutes against a team they had no business competing against as 14.5-point underdogs.

What were your takeaways from the defeat that culminated on the leg of Steelers kicker Chris Boswell in the final minutes?

This was by far the best we have seen from Hundley. While it wasn't enough to beat the Steelers, it was impressive, especially after last weeks performance. The Steelers have the 4th ranked defense in the league for total yards, 3rd ranked in passing yards, 4th ranked in scoring defense.
Packers offense put up 28 points on them when they average giving up only 17.5 points per game.

That shows how well Hundley really played overall. If he continues to play like that, I think he will make things interesting the next few games.
His last drive was his best. Down by 7 he drove them down to tie up the game.

IMO, the game was changed on 2 plays. The FG attempt, and the non call on the helmet to helmet hit on Hundley. If they call that helmet to helmet hit, the Packers get a first and 10, 15 yards farther up field. Instead it turned into a 2nd and 16. Huge turning point in the game.

Now we need to see if Hundley can match his performance against the Bucs.

I think it is important to keep the 3 TOs in mind. Some have calculated the value of a TO as 4 points overall. So by that measure the Pack walked on the field with a 12 point advantage and left it behind by 3. So as an overall performance they were beaten by about two TDs. Just about what the betting line was. So this is still a team that needs to find more production on the field in stops and scores, especially against NFL teams. Keep Cleveland, arguably not good enough to play in the NFL, circled as the only likely win to finish this year.

My takeaway is that Hundley plays better on the road than he does at Lambeau. Some players prefer to be away from the scrutiny of their home crowd. We'll see what happens when he's back at Lambeau.

I thought that our OL played well and at least 2 of the 4 Steeler sacks were on Hundley.

Except for the 57 yard FG try MM called a good game and his plan nearly resulted in a victory against a tough opponent. On the 57 yard FG try I think he was trying for a 10 point cushion with one quarter to play and more importantly he was considering with Hundely at QB he may not get another trip to the red zone. With Rodgers at QB he probably punts in that situation knowing Rodgers could bring the team down to the red zone at least 2 more times in the 4th qtr. With Hundley who knows?

However and as usual, our defense, which did come up with 3 TOs, could not make a stop when it mattered most and allowed 17 points during the the final 19 minutes of the game. The late 4th quarter series where we only held the ball for 13 seconds hurt badly as well. Poor execution on that one. FIRE CAPERS. Thanks, Since '61

Interesting, I hope that's wrong about Hundley and he's just getting more comfortable with his reads and NFL.game speed.

I hope so as well. We'll see how it goes at Lambeau against the Bucs this Sunday. Living in the NYC area and being a NY Yankees fan and a NY Rangers fan I have seen many players come to NY and play poorly in front of the NY crowd but then go on the road and be a completely different player.

Maybe true for Hundley. We see. Thanks. Since '61

Even if that's true, we can't afford home losses because Hundley has the galloping trots when home.

Agree, we'll find out this Sunday at Lambeau. If he plays well, which I hope, my theory is blown up, but if he doesn't he might have a problem. Thanks, Since '61

Takeaway: the coaching staff hasn't lost the players...at least, not yet.

My takeaway...

The steelers played down for most of the game.

When it got to nut cuttin time, they scored at will and in spite of a gallant performance from the offense the better team would not be denied a victory ontheir home field.

Take away: I can't remember the last time I felt ok about a Packers loss. Seeing the team fight against one of the best teams in the league, when the chips were down, felt good. After pathetic losses against Detroit and Baltimore, I thought this team had no fight and minimal talent.

The Pittsburgh game was encouraging. Where that takes this team from here??

Dan1 - it takes this team into 2018 with a healthy Rodgers and a fresh start, hopefully with some impact draft picks and an FA or 2 at WR, CB, TE and a pass rusher(s). Thanks, Since '61

This game was like.....knowing someone is home, you leave a gift, of real value, at the front door and ring the bell and hide behind the tree or whatever hoping to get a glimpse of the smile of the recipient.
They answer and look straight ahead and close the door. Again you ring the bell and still they don't notice the gift. You for the third time ring and ring and again they look out but never notice the gift at their feet and close the door.
What can one do but walk up to the door, bang on it, await it to be answered and then pick up the gift and say..." We heard this household was filled with stupid and unaware people but refused to believe it.Three times I tried to give you a gift and your didn't notice or take it. You deserve to be needy as you have no clue how to get ahead".
Inside the family gets together and pat each other on the back for the 'moral' victory they achieved by holding out from taking help and proceed to convince each other how things are getting better as the bank delivers the foreclosure notice.

I think the defense had a good plan to defend the pass , Brown could have had a bigger game but was held in check , the problem was playing the safeties deep was defending the run, I think if we had Clay and Clark that might have been a huge help in stopping the run and maybe forcing a few more 3 and outs. And of course the dumb 57 yard try was a momentum changer.

My takeaway is that we are finally seeing results from a lot of new players who are finally getting game experience. There is some talent here to build on and with new coaching and GM, this team will be in a better position. to turn it around next year.

So you are seeing talent to build on and your idea of the best way forward is to get rid of the guy that brought that talent in so they can turn it around?

Mark me down as opposed to "turning around" the trend of bringing in talent to build on.

Yes. Only a few players, for TT that is lot. Doesn't mean he should stay for next draft. And I certainly don't want MM coaching them going forward. Takes a lost injury filled year to discover that we actually have some additional talent to work with. But the defense has a long way to go, and that also starts with getting rid of Capers.

Old, predictable, stuck in a time warp. Need new blood and energy across the board. We have talent, just not getting it done as a team. One player here, one there during games, but we need coaches to bring the talent together as one, a TEAM. Different motivators can do it I feel. Preachers have been there to long, message not being heard anymore. Playing hard? Yes, but not as a team in all 3 phases.

To be honest, I'm not sure. With the way the NFL is structured, we don't know these football teams until the last 6 games of the season. That is awful on so many levels I don't know where to begin. For the Packers, like other elite teams in this league there are two simple truths. One: For good and ill, this team revolves around QB1, period end of story. Two: The head coach forms and molds the heart of this Packer team. Every thing else is secondary, important but secondary. On that score, the Green Bay Packers are in good hands going forward for the future. As for the next game, let me see the Packer injury report first.

All this BS, This is a game the Packers should of won, Looking back at the end of the first half with not aggressively trying to get into field goal range sends a message to the players, Mike McCarthy is not a winning NFL coach with an average quarterback

That guy is amazing. I'd like for him to stay right where he is for a good long time.

But I won't complain if he moves about 130 miles NE to work.
