Packers Question of the Day: Expectations for Sunday

Sunday night. Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Atlanta Falcons.

It doesn't get much better than this. A chance for the Packers to reclaim their right to revenge and take down the Falcons after being  taken down by this same team twice in 2016.

What are your expectations for the game?

I think you may be right. We have a very good chance if both OTs are healthy though.

Totally depends on the health of our offensive line. If our top tackles are ready to go, we win. If not, we lose.

These teams are that close now, I believe.

At least they're both seasoned vets who don't need much practice. I'm confident at least one will play; hopefully both. But they need to be close to 100% against Atlanta's speed.

i think the key is our DL and the pass rush. Ryan is no threat to hurt you with his legs so if they can get to him like they did to Wilson....its game over for the Falcons. make Ryan uncomfortable in the pocket .....he is no Aaron Rodgers!

I expect a game completely different then the NFCCG.

I have brought it up several times so I apologize if you guys are tired of seeing it, but the Packers top 3 of 4 WR's shouldn't have been playing. Nelson with broken ribs, Adams with a bad ankle sprain and Allison with pulled hamstring definitely showed that they shouldn't have played. The offense will be much different with Rodgers having all of his weapons available.

Defensively our defense is completely different. No more Gunter and Hyde, and now we have House and King, along with the returned to health of Randall and Rollins.
We also have Burnett playing a bigger role as the hybrid ILB/S. Much more team speed on defense. And Clark really is a huge difference. He is becoming a wall which also helps allows Daniels to dominate.

I'm not saying they will win, but I fully expect a better performance out of Green Bay this time.

Also having played Minnesota last year in their stadium opener, I think it will serve this team well having that experience.

Good post; excellent points.

I'll also be interested in seeing House in his 2nd week back from injury--less rust--and both rookie Joneses factoring in with their speed on that fast track.

My biggest concern is injuries. I just hate turf.

yeah, I thought House looked rusty last week. Missing all of preseason definitely showed up.

I would love to see both Joneses play. I was surprised that they had Mays up over Jones last week. Aaron Jones was by far the better of the 2 RB's.

Your concern is mine as well. Namely our OL. Going against Atlanta on a fast track with Beasley and rookie McKinnley I don't think would be good for Murphy if he has to play. And how effective will Bulaga be missing practice this week.
That is my biggest concern heading into this week.

I want them to win, but as long as they are competitive and close, and it isn't a blowout, I will be fine with the outcome.
I just don't want to be all frustrated and PO'd if they get blown out again and their defense gets destroyed. That would indicate no progress.

yeah, i agree.

Our defense looks a lot different from last year. Well this will be a huge test to see if our pass defense especially CB's are a lot better. This will be a huge test.

Is this the week Clay Matthews stops just getting close on sacks, and actually hits paydirt?

IKR? It's really pretty ridiculous the number of times he gets right there and whiffs over one subtle move.
You'd figure he'd be aware of this and rush with more control.

He had another bad one on Wilson, when he committed inside (where he had help), and abandoned outside (where he had no help).

If Clay just stays to the outside there, Russell eats turf.

It's like Clay's blown sack in the preseason, where he went in far too high and blew a dead-to-rights sack on a stunt.

It's maddening for a $15 million player.

Well he isn't going against Russell Wilson, so that will help for sure.

Problem with Ryan is he typically gets the ball out fast.
I think the CB's need to get up and in the faces of the WR's not allowing them a quick release, which allows Ryan to get the ball out fast.

Force him to hold the ball will be part of the plan with press coverage where possible I presume. The problem is, if you miss your jam at the LOS, and don't have safety help, it's bye-bye for quick six. It's somewhat of a gamble. I anticipate they will mix coverages but mostly play off the receivers, particularly JJ. Or maybe they will double him the whole game, but I doubt it because Sanu can hurt you too, plus Hooper has some speed.
Their offense is much like the Packers, only they have better RB's.
Tough assignment for the GB D.

I think you're right regarding personnel, but honestly that's me thinking with my heart. I like our receivers compared to their's , but they sure had no problem moving the ball against us in both games last year. We couldn't stop them and get off the field.

This game will boil down to who's defense is able to get more 3 & outs, hold down the yardage, limit TOP, and get off the field. I sure hope we've improved on D. I'd like to think we have, but I'm still a bit cynical because Seattle's offense is nothing close to Atlanta's. If the Packers can hold ATL to 20 or less and win this game, I'll be the 1st to start talking about playing in the NFC championship this season.

I feel good about this team. So I guess my expectation for Sunday is WIN. Why sugar coat it. I don't think the Falcons are trotting out anything that much better on offense or defense than we are.

I don't have the dislike for Atlanta that I do for some other teams. If the Packers can't win the Super Bowl it would not bother me to see Atlanta get a trophy.

That said I worry for that team. That SB collapse was epic and then they lose the Coordinator to their unstoppable offense. The performance last week against the Bears has got to be a little alarming after those two things.

I think this game is huge for Atlanta to win in order to keep the doubters at bay and turn things back to the positive. I also think the Packers defense has the ability to shock them a bit with a completely different capability than they showed in the last game.

An early turn over by the GB defense and a quick strike touchdown by AR could start a snowball rolling on Atlanta that might last longer than one game.

It's too early to say this but I just feel like Atlanta has a good chance to be this year's underachiever.

You make quite a few good points indicating the possibility of a very "pause-a-tive" day for the Packers.
I can't wait for this game!

The Pack are playing another game with play-off home-field advantage on the line. They need to win this Sunday Nite so their chances of returning to Atlanta in the playoffs is reduced. --- It's really key (in my mind) that GB plays all their playoff games in Wisconsin and then jogs on over to Minn. for the SB.

The OL injuries may make this unlikely. The depth on the OL is questionable. ------ I'd hate to see AR getting dumped too many times. --- This early in the season, I can't possibly know if GB has an elite team versus just another playoff contender.

I think Rodgers has a big numbers day and has a full compliment of weapons which he did not have last meeting, I think the defense does enough to hold off the Falcons for a Packers win.

my gut tells me that this game will be an Aaron Rodgers game.. meaning, if the GOAT continues his roll of elite production, the Pack will win. AR throws no picks = the Pack win.

oh, and i hope Ripkowski gets some carries Sunday evening.. i feel strongly that he will not be fumbling this weekend.

I expect victory! I expect the Falcons to come out flying high for their new stadium, also first time in front of their home crowd since helping NE win the SB.

If the Packers can withstand Atlanta's opening blows and stabilize the crowd by keeping it close though the first quarter I think that the Packers can take control of the game and pick up the W.

Defense needs another physical effort like they had against Seattle. The OL needs to keep Rodgers clean.
I expect Bennett to be a factor in this game.

Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

If its no offensive tackles playing I hope people don't start thinking the offense we end up seeing is some sort of statement about the Packers. If the offense ends up starting practice squad guys at left tackle lets just hope McCarthy finally gives these guys some help and doesn't just put them out there sink or swim like he usually likes to do.

I agree with RCPackerFan, forget the playoff game, focus on the October game 32/33.
There wasn't any game that playoff game day, just some invalids showing guts and grit to be there.

In Oct 2016 game the Packers were not playing Lacy, Starks, Cook, Shields (Monty was a 4/5th WR then) and I don't think either of the R corner boys was playing, both hurt with Gunter playing.
The RBs were K. Davis and D. Jackson, so no running game. Rip was best rusher.

I think this todays revamped, much faster, deeper Defensive backfield is worth a positive net gain of 4 to 8 pts overall.

On the offense an improved WR core with Allison plus add in the 2 TE sets available, Monty at RB or motion out to WO and I see an additional 4 to 8 pts net gain on that side of ball.
To make the Packer's out look even better, look at the STs improved punting, field position, dual gunners Janis with Josh Jones on other side.
Optimistically,,,, I am looking for a Packers 6 to 8 pt win.
A 35 to 28 win. (obviously with a decent O line)
Will be a tight and tough game in new stadium. If played in GB would be a 40 to 28 win.

Can't ignore the Falcons' problems either. Lost their Offensive coordinator genius Shanahan to SF and fired their 2 defensive coaches who had built their tremendously effective defense, which seemed stupid. Losing SB wasn't all their fault.
Now a new OC rookie is building schemes and calling plays in his 2nd game and who knows how well the new DC will handle his defense. All of those coaching changes has to be creating some chaos on both sides of the ball. Maybe we saw some of that chaos in Chicago last week?
All this in the Pack's favor.
