Packers placing franchise tag on Davante Adams

The team still hopes to get a long term deal done prior to the start of the new league year.

From Spoon:

This will be the first time the Packers have utilized the franchise tag since 2010 when they placed it on Ryan Pickett, prior to working out a long term deal. I'd expect the same outcome here.

The Packers automaticlally take on the $20.5M franchise tag number onto their cap. (As Ken pointed out yesterday, Adams does not get tagged at the $18,419,000 number listed by the NFL for wide receivers. The CBA ensures player in question gets the larger of that number, or 120% of his 2021 contract salary. Davante falls into the 120% category.)

The Packers have until next week and the start of the new league year on March 16th to get themselves under the salary cap for the 2022 season, which is set to be at $208.2 million. The team is currently close to $30 million over that number. Getting Adams' cap hit down via a long term extension will be a big key in making that happen.

Now in his enemy year, best case scenario for the team, worst case for him.

This organization is clinging to the past, a sure recipe for failure.

My opinions vary. My thoughts today are to trade him for a high draft pick. It would save enough money to keep players like Campbell and then use the draft pick to move up and get one of the nice WR’s in the draft. Also it would also make Rodgers have to throw to the open receiver, not just Adams.

The League has never released specifics about the franchise tag. Where *exactly* on the player is it placed? It must not be heavy or bulky. Seems like if they attached it to an ear, like a Holstein, we'd have seen one by now on other players across the NFL. Maybe it's small. Perhaps a microchip? Or a henna tattoo? It's one of the best kept secrets in football, I'd say.

It's like a mattress: they sew it into a seam and it can't be removed under penalty of law...

Aaron Rodgers tweeted, "I will be playing with the Packers next year, however, reports about me signing a contract are inaccurate."
Rodgers will likely be going year-to-year from here on out, but the Packers will now have until July 15 to hammer out a multi-year pact with Adams. If one doesn't come together, 29-year-old Adams will get a fully guaranteed $20.145 million on the franchise tag.

It's not the outcome I was expecting at all. I was at peace with moving on from both. But I was going to miss saying "holy crap did you see that throw and catch" about twice per game.

if just winning some season games is what you want, no super bowl or playoff wins, today was a good day?

Packer fans will see how good Russ Ball is to get under the salary cap in a week. Adams will be back on a 3-year deal and expect to see the following players released: Z Smith, Cobb, Turner, Summers. That will free up about $30 million. Players that are extended: Preston, Alexander, Amos, Lowry. Free agents who will not be back; Lancaster, Burks, MVS, Patrick, Kelley, Sullivan, Tonyan, Yiadom. After next week, its get out the white board for the draft. Never a dull moment.

They can’t wait until July to redo 17s contract can they? Don’t they have to do something by next week to get his cap # down?

They can wait if they have to (that is, because Adams and the FO can't agree on Adams' value). If they can't hammer out a deal with Adams that lowers his cap hit from $20.12M to something like $10M in time to make offers to Campbell, Douglas and the others, then the team might not be able to sign some of its UFAs that it otherwise would.

If they can't reach an agreement by March 16, the FO will have to generate cap relief from Z, P, Amos, Turner, Lowry, Crosby and Lewis, plus Jaire and anyone else I've forgotten.

That is Adams' leverage.

Is there a chance they would trade him this week if he doesn’t want to deal?

Do we know yet if the franchise tag was exclusive or non exclusive? I would assume exclusive because the cap deadline is so close.
