Packers May Be Forced To Sign Outside Linebacker
After last night's scrimmage, the Packers were down to three healthy players at the position.
Coming into training camp, some observers thought the Green Bay Packers needed to bring in a veteran outside linebacker to compete for a spot roster.
After Saturday's Family Night scrimmage, that time might be upon them. With a scheduled day off today, the Packers have until Monday to figure out a plan of action at the position when they return to practice at 2 p.m.
Second-year Pro Bolwer Clay Matthews "tweaked" his hamstring last evening, leaving the Packers slightly thin at a position without a lot of depth.
"The scoreboard for me personally, the way I view it, is the No. 1 score that I am interested in is our medical report," said head coach Mike McCarthy following last night's action. "You want to come out of this controlled scrimmage healthy, there is no doubt about it. But at some point you are going to be in live action."
Aside from Matthews, two other outside linebackers sat out of Saturday's festivities completely, Brady Poppinga who suffered a concussion on Thursday. and undrafted rookie Frank Zombo who has been dealing with an ankle injury.
That left Matthews as one of only four healthy outside linebackers able to suit up last evening joining the newly converted Brandon Chillar, Brad Jones and Cyril Obiozor. It's a position that has been left even thinner following the move of Robert Francois to inside linebacker this past week during training camp.
The severity of Matthews' hamstring injury is, as of yet, unknown. But a red flag has to be thrown up considering it was a hamstring injury that kept him out of training camp for a couple weeks last year when it was thought Matthews may have "overworked" his ailing "hammy."
The time missed by Matthews last season was enough for Brady Poppinga to take take over the starting spot at left outside linebacker at the beginning of the '09 regular season. Matthews wouldn't retain the starting job until the fourth game.
Likewise, it's unknown how long the injuries to Poppinga and Zombo will continue to keep them out of action. But if all three injured outside linebackers aren't able to return to practice by Monday, the Packers will only have three able bodies. And they're entering a week that culminates in the first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns Saturday in Green Bay.
The easiest option may be to return Francois to his original OLB position where he began training camp. That, however, would leave the Packers slightly short-handed at inside linebacker where they've been holding out Nick Barnett from time to time following an offseason knee scope.
There are very few veteran linebackers on the free agent market. Adalius Thomas, who was released by the New England Patriots, remains a possibility.
The Packers could also re-sign an undrafted rookie like Tim Knicky or John Russell who was cut just days before training camp began in order to get Atari Bigby and Bryan Bulaga under contract. In order to sign anyone outside the team, though, the Packers would have to cut a player to make room for them.

Tim Knicky is in the Jets camp right now.
I hope the Matthews hamstring injury is only a marginal tweak, because the additional body mass won't quicken the recovery.
Like any team, we need a bit of luck to maintain a healthy roster going into the regular season. I hope McCarthy treads lightly and TT is in steady contact with the training staff in order to reassess his personnel approach this fall.
Cheers!

Adalius Thomas is a douche. Wouldn't want him on my team, and he didn't show anything last year with the patriots. If Belichik couldn't get something out of him what makes you think that McCarthy can? He is not "Packer People" even in the least. Most likely they will end up trading someone off the team to a second-string OLB somewhere else. Problem is that OLBs are rare and would require a more talented player at another position, which is something that I don't think TT will give up. This is why we saw Chillar working at OLB last week, in case someone is out and they have to make a change. Might put Poppinga there on 1st and 2nd down and have a pass-rushing OLB in on 3rd down.

that whole controversy started when Thomas and other team members where late for practice during a blizzard. You could definitely be right about the packer people comment but I think that whole thing was blown out of proportion a little last year. He was considered by many to be good veteran leader, especially during the 2007 undefeated run. I don't think it'd be that much of risk especially since he'd be a depth player.

Assuming that the injuries to Poppinga (concussion), Matthews (Hammy), and Jones (bruised back) are not serious. I can't see Thompson doing any more than bringing in a camp body.

I would look at the Ravens' and Steelers' final roster cuts after the preseason for an OLB. They all have an abundance of them and I doubt all of them make the final 53.

So there's gotta be a REALLY good reason they can't move Bishop outside. Right?

Mental Lapses,he seems to lose focus of what is going down on defense call.

He does that at ILB too. Wouldn't he be better than Obiozor or Poppinga?

He is an absolute liability in coverage, 'lost-in-space'. Not saying Brady or Cyril are any better, but that's one thing I know would turn the coaches off on that switch.

He's a liability against the pass on the inside too.

I agree NYPACKER, Steelers especially, would fit DC's mold- even watch Steelers PS.-later if problems arise.
Other thing that might work, is to package one of our exceptional WR's , JJ, who's contract is up next yr., and will be gone, for someone who's ready to break out?

I said no such thing or have I ever written a single thing here advocating for the acquisition of a linebacker. Actually, I've consistantly railed against doing so.
Tim Knicky, that I referenced above, was already in the Packers camp this year and cut. The auther (Brian Carriveau) the story above made reference to possibly bringing Knicky back. I simply posted, "he's in the Jet's camp now."
Never said it....

Pitt, why wash your car, it's only going to get dirty.

Packers are now playing flag football?
Relax? Say that to coach Green! Or the rook's, trying to make the team!
Injuries are starting to mount, why not look at some guys. We need a fast start this season, unlike last yr.!

I don't think with everybody healhty, and they will be for the beggining of the season, that we need more OLBs. It'd be nice to have more depth, but I don't think it's a need.
What IS a need, however, is getting extra bodies for the preseason. We will field the #2 and #3 D, to spare the starters. But if we only have 3 active OLBs, they'll play a lot of downs from early on, which increases the chances of injury.
