Packers Hand Game To Browns, 13-10

Green Bay blows late, two-score lead for first loss of the season.

The Green Bay Packers’ offense and special teams committed critical errors Sunday in Cleveland to earn the team’s first loss of the season. A fourth-quarter interception and blocked field goal handed the Browns the 13-10 victory. Cleveland scored all 13 of its points in the final 5:48.

“Obviously to be in position to win the game at the end and have the script totally flip on you is tough to deal with,” coach Matt LaFleur said via packers.com

Green Bay looked ready to escape with a win when Brandon McManus trotted out for a 43-yard field goal attempt and 27 seconds remaining. However, a low kick and push up the middle allowed Shelby Harris to block the try. Browns kicker Andre Szmyt drilled a 55-yard field goal five plays later as time expired.

Cleveland just tied the game 10-10 on its previous drive thanks to a Jordan Love interception by safety Grant Delpit. Facing a short third down with 3:18 remaining on his own 25, Love fired a low pass to his left and over the middle. Delpit, initially lined up in man coverage over Tucker Kraft as the third pass catcher inside, read the triple slants play and jumped over to the second receiver Dontayvion Wicks. LaFleur took blame for the pick.

“We shouldn’t have called that play – that’s on me,” he said. “When they’re playing ‘Man Free,’ a lot of teams will pass off an inside-breaking route and fall into that next window. We knew we couldn't make a deadly mistake like that offensively to give them a short field, and that’s exactly what happened.”

Quinshon Judkins powered in a touchdown run on the next play.

Love responded with two clutch plays to put the team back in position for the win. A fade to Romeo Doubs from the slot drew a long defensive pass interference, and a flat dump off to Kraft turned into another big gain thanks to his run-after-the-catch ability. However, the offensive line failed to execute once in field goal range.

Green Bay had the ball at the Cleveland 22 with two minutes remaining. Josh Jacobs ran the ball twice with nowhere to go and on third down, Rasheed Walker committed a false start to stop the clock and back up five yards. The five-yard penalty preceded the blocked kick, and allowed Cleveland enough time for its ensuing game winner.

“When you have 14 penalties in a game, it’s going to be tough to overcome that,” LaFleur said. “We have to lock in at a higher level in regards to some of the controllable penalties whether it’s false starts or offsides.”

The Packers cost themselves 75 yards on the penalties.

When the offensive line wasn’t committing penalties, it was often missing assignments or simply getting beat. The unit again juggled positions thanks to injury as it tried to deal with the fierce Cleveland front.

Zach Tom – trying to return from an oblique injury suffered week one – started and only played one snap. Jordan Morgan took his place at right tackle until guard Aaron Banks suffered a new groin injury and left the game. Morgan moved inside and rookie Anthony Belton filled in at right tackle.

The shuffled unit resulted in five sacks of Love, a meager 30 yards on 16 carries from Jacobs, and a disjointed offense for 60 minutes of football.

“We can’t allow that to happen,” LaFleur said regarding the decision to start Tom and his subsequent exit from the game.

The defense, for its part, delivered another excellent performance. The Browns offense merely flirted with field goal range for three-and-a-half quarters. Cleveland scored its first points – a field goal – on a 12-play, 63-yard drive. However, the defense was unable to bail out the offense and special teams after the interception and blocked field goal, respectively. Quay Walker registered 14 tackles and Rashan Gary added two sacks for the unit while Xavier McKinney caught his first interception of the season.

Green Bay opened the game’s scoring in the second quarter on a methodical 13-play, 43-yard drive to set up a 39-yard McManus field goal. The Packers scored on another long drive – 14 plays for 71 yards – and capped it with a short Love toss to John Fitzpatrick for his first career touchdown, 10-0. The Packers could only muster a “three-and-out” and “six-and-out” on their next two drives before the Delpit interception.

Other Notes

  • Love’s interception was his first in over nine games
  • Jacobs’ 11-game touchdown streak ended in the loss. It was the second longest in NFL history behind LaDanian Tomlinson’s 12. LaFleur called two Jacobs runs on the goal line that went nowhere before the Fitzpatrick touchdown.
  • Javon Bullard left the game under his own power after an apparent concussion

It didn't come down to special teams; it came down to an offense that could not put more than 10 points on the board. You lose most of those games, regardless of special teams.

What's he going to do, though? Bisaccia was the most sought after ST coach in the league for good reason. It's not like he suddenly forgot how to coach when his plane landed in Green Bay.

The game was not televised here in San Antonio where I live. So, I went out to a local Buffalo Wild Wing for beers and some food at the bar. And on the bar stool next to me was a Bears fan and next to him was his best pal, a Cleveland Browns fan. And when it was all over, I had wasted 60 bucks to watch this clunker of a game. Yuck!

MLF, "We shouldn't have called that play...."

But shouldn't Love have a mind of his own out there? Surely you don't proceed with the play call without thinking, "Hey, there's three guys with brown jerseys right around my receiver, so maybe I should do something else." Apparently not.

You would think JL10 might have a thought like that. Sometime.

More importantly, if GB were in the habit of playing for 60 minutes they would've been much more likely to have continued playing the way that got them up 10-0 and closed the game, instead of letting one interception shift the momentum right to the buzzer.

I wondered how the Packers would travel this season, after getting home field for the first two weeks. Well, not very well today, obviously. Maybe they needed a humbling so now we wait to see how they respond next week in Jerry's World.

If a game was to be lost at least this one was AFC so that pushes it further down on possible tiebreakers at the end of the season. I hope they're fired up next week like they were in the previous two.

I wouldn't put this all on MLF'splay calliing.

In the first half, Morgan killed three drives. Once with a penalty, that forced us to settle for a FG instead of a TD, and two other times his man got a sack that ended a drive.

I get that Morgan hasn't played a lot at RT, but you can't win if your line repeatedly kills drives with sacks and penalties.

"These guys" can't do anything as long as Le Fleur calls passive, unimaginative games as he so often does. How many balls were thrown to Doubs, Golden, and Wicks? They had eight catches between them. Puka Nakua had 11 today and beats all three by himself each week. He's a great player, but he also consistently gets the ball thrown to him.

Our running game has been nonexistent this year, so maybe use the passing game to open it up. No, it's the same boring offense; two runs and a pass, two passes to the boundries, or two end arounds.

La Fleur was an offensive genius when he inherited Rodgers and Davante. He had a pro-style offense then. He doesn't now.

1st. Never should have started Tom…..or Banks…both hurt

2. Repeat line above All started with that

3. Should have had other guys ready to go on the on line. That started last week in practice.

4 Either MLf babies some call for Jordan or doesn’t trust him or MLF has put so much energy in this team over the last few years he can’t see the forest or he needs someone else to start calling plays.

5. Did Musgrave even Play ………

6. Golden needs to stay in bounce on that play he goes for 6th

"7. READ MY LIPS"!
I've actually been trying to do that, but it can get a bit confusing sometimes. Let's see:
Reed, sometimes = Golden?
in bounce (maybe) = in bounds?
beat, sometimes = bet?
missed, sometimes = blocked FG?

Do I have all that figured correctly?

He seems to forget about being prepared to engage the opponent in the third quarters. He took the foot off the Gas last weekend vs Washington. Doubs is the guy to get the ball directed at him and Golden should be running free giving CBs fits, not potentially being injured running the flanker reverse two plays in a row, for jack squat. The reason a fullback comes into the picture. If Love needs the max pro, bring Brooks into the design and direct him to take heads. The 12 personnel was not being utilized effectively. They stack the box, beat the weak link.
Too much musical chairs for the O line. Banks and his Contract were questionable from Day One.

Defense was really solid until the fourth quarter. The tackling on the last two drives was HORRENDOUS and the refs missed two blatant holds on Wyatt leading to massive runs for the Browns. Also, let's not forget the phantom calls yet again that came late in the game to extend drives for the Browns. Love was pretty solid until the fourth quarter. The special teams were garbage again with multiple penalties and both field goals were horrible low snaps. The offensive line opened no holes for the run game and the pressure from the stunts is inexcusable. I saw one play with 5 lineman, a TE and a RB blocking and they got to Love with only 4 rushers, 2 guys hit him in no time. The Packers really looked like they just gave up in the fourth quarter and they made every single possible mistake they could not afford to make in a close game. What a disaster.

Throw it away and get ready for next week.

It starts with a weak O-Line. Someone in one of the chats wondered if these guys need more strength and better work-outs.
Jordan was not protected, MLF couldn't call many plays because there was no OL Run nor Pass blocking.
Jordan Morgan did poorly, Tom and Banks were injured, Jenkins has not excelled as a Center, Rhyan did poorly.
This OL may be the biggest problem going forward because the bench doesn't seem deep. Teams have this weak performance on tape and will use it.

Perhaps Ed Policy can persuade MLF to fire Bisaccia @ the end of the season.

"Love is the ORG's man by default of his salary, but Love is a far cry from being THE MAN." - Anonymous

Lol, let me splain something.....

Do you know what the odds are, of having two consecutive HOF QB's on 1 team, for a span of 30 years?
Hint: Before the Packers, it's never happened. Probably will never ever happen again.

Now.....Do you know what the odds are of acquiring or drafting 3 HOF QB's consecutively.
Probably pretty fk'n slim, amirite? 😲😏

Sure, some can bitch about Love....
Why....because that's all most fans 40 and younger know is Green Bay HOF QB's.
They don't know anything else!!
Not really their fault, just a lil ignorant.

So if they don't think they have the 3rd one (in a row), they lose their shit...lol
Because they aren't old enough to know any better.

In other words, they've been spoiled (Gulp)

This is a general post, not directed at you Sic.....

I agree that Love is fine, this franchise could do a lot worse at QB than Love.

Love has a problem that many other QB's have, he struggles under pressure.

No, Love is not #12, or #4, (never claimed he was, or should be).

What separates Love (and others) from #4, and 12. is that 4 and 12 made plays many, many, many many, times under pressure.

No two QB's made something from nothing like Favre and Rodgers (in spectacular fashion!!).
That's why, i have always said, (some hate filled Packer fans) should try to appreciate what those QB's brought to Packer Nation......They brought MANY happy Packer fans, for a long time.

Two HOF QB's for 3 decades straight (are you kidding me!!).....

Packer Nation should appreciate it, respect it, enjoy it. relish in it, be prideful, because that scenario, will never happen again like that.

Packers have games like this that snowball on them. When everything goes wrong. I think the idea going in that you had both Banks and Tom playing and they are both gone again right away messed with their heads. The playcalling was scared. They had penalties, a bonehead turnover, missed opportunities (the play to Golden should have been a TD, and Love needed to dive forward and get that first down instead of leaving third and short), no running game, and if they could have just blocked up a field goal attempt, they would have won.

Good teams are supposed to win games when they play bad - but maybe this one can be a wakeup call. Play the normal offense, If Love gets sacked 10 times, then get sacked 10 times. Cause when he doesn't get sacked, he is still going to make plays. But he can't do that if every call is an end-around.

Dallas looks like a defense that can be a balm for whatever ails your offense and a good bounce-back opportunity. They have made WIlliams and Wilson look like great QBs the last 2 weeks.

This was ugly. Flush it and move on. Only thing to take out of it is if any of these line injuries are long term, make a move now. This is an all in sort of year.

The TV announcer made it sound like Zach Tom took himself out of the game because he knew he couldn't help the team. We don't know if he hurt it worse, or what. We probably won't find out, either.

I have less idea what's up with Banks. I saw #85 look like he hurt his knee by the way he got up a few times, but maybe he was just being cautious?

"Making a move" for an O lineman may not be an opportunity that can be found.

When the players get well paid, the organization wants them on the clock. It seems obvious, he was not at all ready to perform effectively. Banks pulls his other groin muscle set. Did he get the Memo to try stretching and flex work prior to game time? Stenavich is the running game coordinator. Why move Belton.and plug in Morgan at RT if he wasn't practicing the position all Summer?

The team has really messed with Morgan, I think, and not done him any favors playing him all up and down the line. You do that with a guy you think is a career backup. The guy you hope to be a ten-year starter, you set his position and put him to work.

I agree, he played mostly guard this summer, and it showed when he had to play tackle against a top D line.

He played left tackle about half the time this summer, due to Rasheed Walker being injured, and he played it well. It was not a surprise to see him at right tackle, as he is the #6 O-lineman. He played right guard last year, so playing on that side of the line should not have been too big of an adjustment for him. The entire O-line played poorly, with the possible exception of Sean Rhyan. Maybe Morgan just got caught up in that, for whatever reason. We'll see if this leads to a new strategy next week. The Cowboys front line is not nearly as good as the Browns front line, so we should see much better results.

MLF has to understand that he has a top 5 defense and in a game like this there's no need for splash plays or Love dropping back holding onto the football only to get dumped for losses. This was a dink and dunk, ball control , field position game. That 4th quarter was about the worst play calling, worst execution and slap stick special team play as you'll see. The Packers coaches and players to defeat from the jaws of victory. A wasted performance by this talented defense.

This fiasco was an embarrassment to PackerNation. I was concerned about all the 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 talk. Even players were taped saying we can go perfect through the season. Too much of that dream dominated their attention and the Pack lay an egg in Cleveland. What a travesty! What a choke job! Penalties, penalties, penalties - Special teams, D-line, DBs, O-line.....there is not one single positive fact coming out of this game other than getting out of the city. Well, the "dream" is done, so now maybe we can play some football, please? Gosh - what a dud by Love!

You're talking like you think GB lost because they fell into a trap game. I don't think so. If they were in the habit of playing for 60 minutes, that would've helped.

Might be the best post yet, SST!
The game is 60 minutes long, and it starts at the beginning, not the 2nd or 3rd quarter. And, it ends when the clock runs out, not when you have a 10 pt. lead!
If only someone could please tell MLF!

I think it was a dud by the offensive line. All 5 o linemen were the lowest rated players for the game and none ofthem were over a 40 rating in pass blocking. It was not just a poor game by the line, but a historically bad game, the lowest rating in over a decade. The PFF report called it a complete meltdown of the entire line. The article said:

"The Packers' pass protection unit was credited with allowing 17 total pressures, and everyone was at fault. Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Jordan Morgan, Sean Rhyan, and Anthony Belton all gave up three pressures apiece. The Packers couldn't block Myles Garrett, Mason Graham, and Maliek Collins, who combined for 12 pressures and seven stops. This was a complete meltdown up front for the Packers."

I know it is only game 3 but by a show of thumbs up, down - who would make Hafley the head coach today? (Nevermind what to do about MLF, this is just for fun at the moment)

Hafley is too much of a gentleman to accept a GB HC position but I bet he gets other offers.

Other offers? Yes, and quite possibly sooner than we'd like!
About the gentleman thing, if MLF were to get fired, and he was named interim coach, I think he'd be bucking to keep the job!

Every year the Packers have a game where they just lay an egg. When an inferior opponent is allowed to win through bad play by the Packers and the opponent taking advantage of those opportunities. Right now, the OL is having some problems, with guys being shuttled to new positions in-game. And when you have a tough defensive opponent- and the Browns do have an excellent defense- bad things can happen. Throw in another mistake by the OL/ST's on the blocked field goal, and untimely penalties, and the Packers snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
This should be a wake-up call. We'll see what happens in Dallas. Because the Cowboys have to be getting desperate, and a team with it's back to the wall, and the recent humiliation at home by the Packers in the playoffs could well lead them to make the game much closer.

The post game was a classic. MLF keeping it all warm and fuzzy blaming himself for everything.
Ed Policy might just agree with him if this Packer team is a one & done.
Cleaning up penalties? I know it’s a young roster, but in 2023, and 2024 the packers were a top ten most penalized team.
Penalties, Jordan Love, not so special teams, and MLF (by his own admission) were the main culprits.
MLF is in his seventh year. I keep hearing he’s a great play caller… but I have a vision of Love taking a snap instead of running out the 3rd quarter (and of course taking a 13 yard sack , on one of the stupidest plays you will ever see)
One game, yes… but a painful reminder of what we have seen from the MLF era.

Would anyone here who believed the Packers were going undefeated all the way through the Super Bowl please raise your hand? That's what I thought.

Yes, the Packers blew the game. Lets all grow up and move on.

1)Matt LaFleur is not an idiot and the reason the team has done as well as it has is because, well, Matt LaFleur is the coach. The Rams lost the game to the Eagles on a special teams blunder. I suppose McVey should be fired. Overreaction has become a sickness among fan bases.

2) Cleveland's defense is the best I've seen. We all forget Jim Schwartz has been a Packers killer over the years.

3)The offensive line is the main problem. The 'cut and paste' approach where multiple players play multiple positions sounds good on paper but it is difficult to get continuity. I'm starting to question the Aaron Banks signing. Did the 49'ers know something about his health the Packers didn't?

4) Rich B. the special teams coach. Hmmmmmmn.

5) The whole team seemed to relax at the 4 minute mare remaining. Why?

Time to move on. The Cowpokes are next in Jerryworld. Could be another tough game.

The reason they're not raising their hands, Harry, is they're too busy hitting the thumbs down button to any "Reality" posts!
They can't handle the truth!
