Packers Didn't Fall For 49ers Cheap Stuff

Mike McCarthy's team did an excellent job of not taking the bait when it came to some of the 49ers post-play antics.

Watching the victory over the 49ers again, I was struck by how much cheap, after-the-play stuff the 49ers were engaging in. From the opening kickoff, the 49ers were pushing the envelope. There were several plays where you can see linebackers Takeo Spikes and Patrick Willis trying to "intimidate' Packer receivers and ball carriers with a little extra shove while they're on the ground, well after the whistle is blown. (On the Packers' opening drive, Josh Sitton can be seen taking exception to Spikes giving Greg Jennings a cheap extra shove while getting up from the tackle)

Then, there's this from Tramon Williams:

84 (Josh Morgan) was out there doing some things that the ref didn't see. He was doing all kinds of stuff.

He was doing little things, holding, all kinds of stuff. I guess you have to play through that stuff. Actually what the ref told me was, 'I saw it.' If you saw it, why didn't you throw the flag? What else can you say, if he said he saw it and didn't throw the flag?

No one on the Packers ever retaliated, at least not that I can see from the broadcast tape. It speaks to the type of team that McCarthy has and to the job that he and his staff have done in having their players ready to play and not to fall for the antics of a team that was clearly desperate to prove how "tough" they were. Any number of times, Packer players could have lost their cool and possibly cost the team 15 yards in an unsportsman-like penalty.

But those penalties never came. Because the Packers were too cool for that.

Chalk it up to Jolly not being around this season? He was always good for a couple boneheaded penalties throughout the season

Assume that the trend of McCarthy's teams playing with more composure and more discipline RE penalties (with, obviously a few exceptions) continues. Do you think this impacts their decisionmaking on Jolly?

Remember the Williams non-horse collar? This team is well coached and takes well to coaching.

SF, on the other hand, are desperate, like their coach. Being tough is a state of mind - not something you can turn on because your 'coach' remembers his old days.

So maybe that old saw about "the best revenge is living well" isn't total crap after all.

It's easy to stay cool when you're winning, but it really is a credit to MM and staff that the players stayed cool in the first half when things were still tight-ish.

Apparently MM's been quoting Judge Smales in his pep talks...

"It's easy to grin
When your ship's come in
And you've got the stock market beat

But the man worthwhile
Is the man who can smile
When his shorts are too tight in the seat."

OK pookie!

Great. I hope we stay composed when we play the Bears (18 penalties last time) and the Giants...

Shields was pushing Morgan back well after the whistle on one play...it was early in the game--a screen to the left for no gain that Zombo almost tipped and Peprah made a nice tackle on. I got a little paranoid, hoping a flag didn't fly. It didn't. That's about as close as we came to retaliating.

I think it was one of McGinn's scout sources last week who mentioned that the Niners "think they're better than they actually are," or something to that effect. This behavior kind of reinforces that opinion.

Good article. The packers got their revenge with their Pomination of the 49ers in the second half. Not that I thought it would happen, but I was hoping we would see the end of Singletary in San Francisco. I know it's an outside possibility, but we still got a shot at Lovie.
Go Pack!

I think Vernon Davis just likes to talk. Except when his team is losing by 2 touchdowns. Than he has to sit on the bench with a boo-boo.

Yeah, it's easy to not retaliate when you're winning, and when you know you're playing inferior competition.

But then again, equal competition, that could make us lose, wouldn't resort to this kind of cheap stuff.

There's a reason the 49ers are where they are for a decade...

Oh, and even if it's in the end of the season, I WILL chalk up Singletary's firing to our coach killers counter. It will bring me great joy.

Actually, on Kuhn's TD run, it looked like Quinn Johnson got into it with someone...I fully expected a flag. It took a fair amount of time to separate everyone, and then all that happened was the ref raised both arms...TD.

That seems like the best way to retaliate to me.

I was at the game and I saw Woodson get a good retaliation shove in after a play.
