Packers Daily Links: Rodgers Avoids Workout Talk

Aaron Rodgers didn't go into details about his offseason workout regimen during an interview yesterday. That and more in today's Daily Links...

There's nothing on the Packers calendar today as the nation prepares for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, but running backs James Starks and Quinn Johnson are hosting a party called Baller Bash at a club in New Orleans on Saturday...

With the Packers believed to be the only team in the NFL not to hold a large-scale, player-organized workouts during the NFL's lockout, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was mum on the topic of workouts on Thursday. "Rodgers, speaking on a conference call to promote the American Celebrity Championship (a celebrity golf tournament he’s playing in July 15-17 in Lake Tahoe), wouldn’t even say whether he’s met up with or thrown to any of his current Packers receivers this offseason," reports Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Despite the questionable value of such workouts, Rodgers wouldn't appear to be doing himself any favors by declining to talk about them. It's only going to stoke the fire more and make more of deal when the Packers take on the Saints in the regular-season opener as a team that's held no offseason practices against the team that's arguably held the most.

In Aaron Rodgers' defense, he did talk about keeping in shape. “I’ve been throwing enough to where I’m not worried about if I’m going to be ready for when this thing shakes down,” Rodgers is quoted as saying by Bill Huber of Packer Report. I know wide receiver Brett Swain has been interviewed about working out and catching passes from Rodgers. The Packers quarterback has also been seen by the media working out with his brother who's a quarterback at Vanderbilt University. Giving even dry details about those workouts to the media would help appease the masses and save him from further questioning in the future.

The media in and around Lake Tahoe were more interested in drumming up a local tie to Aaron Rodgers about the area and the golf event. “It's always fun to come out to Tahoe and get a chance to spend some time with the fans,” Rodgers told the Tahoe Daily Tribune. “(The ACC) is one of the more personal events. Obviously a chance to play some golf with your colleagues in other sports is very attractive. That and the way Harrahs, NBC and Edgewood treat us is incredible. It's an incredible week. It's a great time to get to interact with the fans in the practice round and in the round on Thursday.” Rodgers grew up not far from the Lake Tahoe area in Chico, Cal.

Dan Lauria, the actor that played the iconic coach in the play Lombardi, was interviewed on the Packers official website to help promote the reading of the play to be performed at Lambeau Field in late July. “When you play somebody like Lombardi, it’s got to have that tone to it,” Lauria is quoted as saying by Vic Ketchman of Packers.com. “This was one of the easiest roles to play, because of the NFL. We had access to the ballplayers and the films. Everyone wanted to share their experiences with Coach Lombardi.” Performances will be held July 26 and 27 in Green Bay and then July 28-30 in Appleton at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center.

The Packers announced that tickets were available for the event as well as a special truncated performance at the annual shareholder's meeting on July 28. "As mentioned in the proxy communication to shareholders, the cast of the play will perform a special reading at the conclusion of the meeting," according to the team's official website. "This reading will be a 10-minute excerpt of highlights from the play." Tickets cost $45 for the performances in Green Bay and start at $30 for those in Appleton.

Details on Super Bowl rings offered to shareholders and season ticket holders were reported by Tony Walter of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "A 10-karat ring that identifies the owner as a shareholder or season-ticket holder costs $2,499," writes Walter. "Or, if the lustrium option — a mixture of nickel and chromium — is selected, the price drops to $399." Much of the information came from a letter written to season ticket holders by president Mark Murphy.

Former Packers running back Dorsey Levens was interviewed in an article written by Jason Wilde of ESPNMilwaukee.com. "Levens is currently going through what he calls the acting equivalent of training camp, preparing for the opening of his play Stripped, a behind-the-scenes look at the life of NFL players," writes Wilde. "Levens co-wrote, produced and stars in the play as Jaden Dorsey, a retired player struggling with his post-football life. The show opens in Atlanta on the campus of Levens’ alma mater, Georgia Tech, on July 27, and he’s hoping for a successful run so he can bring the show to Wisconsin thereafter." A few other former NFL players take part in the play with Levens.

The Packers' special teams––and their value due to the lockout––are the focus of an article written by Len Pasquarelli as published in Packer Report (subscription required).

Brandon Benson of Acme Packing Company comments on Pasquarelli's article.

By scrolling through the pictures of this Associated Press article, notice first-round draft choice Derek Sherrod taking part in a community service event at this year's rookie orientation event.

The value of Cullen Jenkins is judged by Michael Rodney of Packer Update, though the picture is incomplete. If Jenkins commands what he's expected to on the open market, it will take even more slashing in payroll than just that of Mark Tauscher and Nick Barnett for the Packers to sign him once the signing of their own free agents and rookies are factored in. The possible length of Jenkins' contract and the effects it would have also aren't discussed.

Aaron Rodgers is ranked the no. 1 player in the NFL by Mike Eckel of the New Jersey Times.

The Packers are continuing Operation Fan Mail in 2011.

That song is actually very catchy... A little too pop for my taste, but if it was a famous band playing it, it would be a big hit.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing... too poppy for me, but I could see teenage girls eating it up.
