Packers Daily Links: Lynch Talks Packers

Bills running back Marshawn Lynch discussed the possibility of being traded to the Packers in a recent podcast. That and more in today's Daily Links...

In a podcast, Bills running back Marshawn Lynch addressed the possibility of a trade to reunite with former college teammate Aaron Rodgers and the rest of the Green Bay Packers. "I felt it was an honor to play with Aaron in college," Lynch is quoted as saying. "If that was something that would happen, I would feel it would be a blessing. Any time you put in work with someone and then get to hit the big stage with them would be unbelievable. That will be cool." It appears these Lynch trade rumors are probably not going to die until the trading deadline comes and goes.

Former Packers general manager Ron Wolf quickly assessed some of the current players on the Packers through an interview with Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Clay Matthews is a really tremendous player. He's very, very skilled and athletic," Wolf said in the interview. "He's relentless. Plus, he's athletically gifted. I think Aaron Rodgers is exceptional. Greg Jennings is exceptional. That Jermichael Finley, he looks like he has rare qualities. I like watching their young players, like Bryan Bulaga had a nice game, really a nice game. That's got to make them feel good." Yes, most of Packers Nation is feeling good about Bulaga right about now.

Nickel also provides a reminder about the time Bears defensive lineman Tommie Harris spared Rodgers from injury and got the quarterback's reaction. “It was a two-point conversion and we had Greg Jennings was on the left,” said Rodgers. “I drive back and I felt something up the middle. And right as I threw it I kind of turned my body because I was getting hit and going down. It was an awkward turn where he had my legs wrapped. Because the Chicago field is just in bad shape in the winter time, and my feet were kind of stuck and my upper body was turning, you could kind of feel that. And I was going down, I was starting to cringe." The article goes onto explain how Harris let go and the respect Rodgers has for Harris.

Maybe not all Chicago Bears will be so understanding. Linebacker Lance Briggs is looking to inflict some pain on the Packers. "We want to establish who we are, and after two weeks we have somewhat of an identity, but we have to continue to do those things," Briggs told the Chicago Tribune. "We welcome the hard work, we welcome the violence, we welcome the hard-hitting, the physical. … we're looking forward to it." There's several Packers that, no doubt, feel the same way.

The success the Packers have been having on kickoff returns is examined by Kareem Copeland of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Special teams coach Shawn Slocum explained one of the biggest differences is the way each individual blocks during returns," writes Copeland. "In the past, blockers would look to kick out a defender in a specific direction by blocking one side of the player. That gave the returner one option to run off blocks. Now, blockers are squaring up and making contact in the chest so Nelson can run off the block to the left or right." Good insight. Considering the Packers haven't returned a kickoff for a touchdown in over a decade, it's time for change.

Outside linebacker coach Kevin Greene put Clay Matthews in the same breath as some of the best 3-4 outside linebackers to ever play the game in a recent article by the Associated Press. "He has more athletically than I ever had," Greene is quoted as saying. "He really is a special outside linebacker in the history of outside linebackers playing the 3-4 defense. And I've said this before, I've not seen another outside linebacker possess the all-around quality of abilities that he has. And I'm talking about the best ones that have ever played the position." That's some lofty praise right there.

Running back Ryan Grant tweeted yesterday that his "surgery went great" as noted by Jeff Ash of the Press-Gazette. "Grant was injured in the season opener at Philadelphia on Sept. 12," writes Ash. "He was expected to have a screw or screws inserted in his right ankle to help heal torn ligaments." I remember reading somewhere else that Grant will attend Packers home games the rest of this season.

General manager Ted Thompson is lauded for improving the Packers' overall depth by Mike Vandermause of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Consider that in the past year the Packers have lost seven starters to injuries, suspension or free agency," writes Vandermause. "Every team suffers from attrition, but the Packers have not only weathered the loss of roughly one-third of their starting lineup from last season, but continue to flourish in spite of it." And now consider that the Packers are going to get a couple of those starters back when Al Harris and Atari Bigby come off the PUP list.

With the Chicago Bears unexpected 2-0 record, ticket prices are only going to get higher from now until game time. "The Bears’ victory in Dallas Sunday following their opening game defeat of the Detroit Lions has put a brighter spotlight on Monday’s game," writes Tony Walter of the Press-Gazette.

A question was posed to offensive coordinator Joe Philbin if Rodgers has to be told not to lock onto Jermichael Finley or any other receiver. "Not really," said Philbin. "I think we do the best we can, and Aaron is very disciplined, we just kind of go with our progressions and take what the defense gives us for the most part. We have a lot of confidence in the passing game and if our spacing's right and our timing's right and our protection is right, that our quarterback will make a good decision and get the ball where it's supposed to go. I think for the most part that happened yesterday. We weren't perfect. We still have a lot of room for improvement but I think it was a step in the right direction."

There's a tweet-up being held at Will's Northwoods in Chicago on Sunday night reminds John Rehor of Green Bay Packer Nation.

Linebacker Nick Barnett was on an episode LA Ink last night getting a tattoo. This article says Barnett is the second-most tattooed player on the team. Your guesses as to who's No. 1?

"Lynch really can play on all downs and all situations," Belichick said at his Wednesday news conference. "I don't really see anything he can't do and do well -- run inside, run outside, runs around and through tacklers, catches the ball well.

"Lynch is a powerful guy. You see him breaking tackles by defensive linemen, running through them, not just [defensive backs]. He runs through a lot of tackles on everybody. Pound for pound he's got to be one of the strongest players in the league with good balance."

Big praise from an unlikely source.
