Packers Daily Links: Hawk Wearing Brace On Wrist

Following post-season surgery, A.J. Hawk is currently wearing a brace while working out with his surgically repaired wrist. That and more in today's Daily Links...

In a feature article appearing in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel over the weekend, linebacker A.J. Hawk gave reporter Lori Nickel an update on his surgically-repaired wrist, an operation having been done immediately after the season to repair some ligament damage. "It's still not completely healed," said Hawk. "But I'm perfectly fine for training camp and everything. I played the whole year with it, so it's fine; it will be all right." Hawk indicated he's currently wearing a brace while working out six days per week.

A.J. Hawk also commented on the players-only workouts being conducted by other teams across the NFL during the lockout saying he's not sure about how valuable they are. "I've heard that different guys' workouts from different teams have just been a disaster," said Hawk. "They're working out at bad high school fields and equipment and all that kind of stuff." Nickel mentioned in her writing the absence of a coaching staff of 20 or more that typically conduct an NFL practice as a possible dentriment.

Southern Mississippi defensive lineman Anthony Gray, a potential undrafted free agent, said in an interview with a local paper that he was contacted by the Packers during the draft and that they might be interested in signing him. "They said they were pretty sure they wanted me as a free agent as soon as things were over with," Gray told Patrick Magee of the Hattiesburg American. The Packers had reportedly brought Gray in for a visit prior to the draft.

Family and former coaches of first-round draft choice Derek Sherrod were interviewed for a feature appearing this past weekend in the Green Bay Press-Gazette. Former Packers and current Rams coach Sylvester Croom, who coached both Derek and his brother Dezmond at Mississippi State, was quoted in the article. “I knew Derek had talent,” Croom told reporter Rob Demovsky. “But the thing that impressed me, having been around his brother, he was just an unbelievable worker. Dezmond didn’t have all the ability that Derek had, but my deal was if they’ve both got the same work ethic, then there’s no question that Derek’s going to be a first-round pick. It turned out he did have the same kind of work ethic. He just had more ability.”

Second-round draft choice Randall Cobb's college position coach Tee Martin was interviewed for an article appearing on the Packers' official website. “We’d be in there at 10 o’clock at night as a staff and Randall would pop in and listen to us game plan,” Martin told Mike Spofford of “He’d be a part of it. He was always around.” In other Randall Cobb news, the new wide receiver indicated on Twitter that he met quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Greg Jennings this weekend for the first time.

Some Packers on the "hot seat" are listed at Acme Packing Company as guys who will be pressed to win a roster spot this upcoming season. Linebacker Nick Barnett checks in at no. 2 on the list. "It's tough cutting good players, but it's tougher to pay starter money to a guy who's probably going to sit the bench," according to the article. "[A.J.] Hawk and [Desmond] Bishop pretty much handled things along the inside last year when Barnett went down and both have reupped with the Packer for some time.  Mix that with the picture scandal around the SB last year and you have a perfect recipe for a vet cutting."

With Mother's Day being yesterday, Al Bracco of looked into the Professional Football Players Mothers Association, of which Elizabeth Peprah, the mother of safety Charlie Peprah, is a member.

I'm glad Cobb finally got to meet ARodg and Jennings. He sounds like he's really excited to be part of this team, same impression I get from Elmore. I'm really digging the character I see from our new picks, already.
