Linebacker A.J. Hawk said yesterday in a conference call with reporters that he recently had the last pin taken out of his wrist from offseason surgery. As part of the interview, Hawk was promoting his upcoming appearance in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament. “I’ve been on the range once, a couple days ago,” Hawk is quoted as saying by Packer Report. “I just got my last little piece of hardware taken out of my wrist two weeks ago, so this is my first time giving it a chance to swing. I feel pretty good swinging. I can’t swing as hard as I’d like. It’s my right wrist, so it’s hard to snap through, I guess. It’s not like I was out there shooting 65 last year, so hopefully I’ll still improve on my score last year in Tahoe. But it’s doing good. It’s going to be ready for training camp to play football and it’s going to be ready for the American Century Championship, as well.” Hawk actually won the event's long drive competition in 2009, so if he happens to take part and perform well again, it might give an indication that his wrist is on its way to healing.

Former Packers defensive end Mike Butler was interviewed for a feature article appearing on the Packers official website. "Today Butler lives in Tampa, Fla., but he didn’t make a home there following his stint with the (USFL's Tampa Bay) Bandits," writes Ricky Zeller of Packers.com. "He is the Assistant Director for Asset Management of the Tampa Housing Authority, overseeing all non-public housing, assisted living facilities and warehouses." Butler played nine seasons of professional football from 1977-85.

The outside linebacker position opposite Clay Matthews is discussed by Kevin McCauley of Acme Packing Company. "Guys like Clay Matthews don't fall from the sky," writes McCauley, "and when a team has a player like Matthews and multiple needs other than a pass rusher, they're not going to reach in the draft or overpay a free agent just to get a similar player on the opposite side. Yes, it would aid the Packers considerably to have another Matthews on the opposite side, but doing so would require sacrifice elsewhere. It isn't worth it." The Packers gladly would have taken another outside linebacker early in the draft if they though one was worthy of such a high draft choice. Obviously that wasn't the case. It will be interesting to see how sixth-rounder Ricky Elmore develops at the position, although I'm not holding my breath for him to be a big contributor in his first season.

Commenting on Winston Moss and Darren Perry as assistant coaches on the rise is Monty McMahon of Total Packers. to be considered rising, you have to have the potential to one day get a head coaching job. In other words, you’re not Dom Capers, who looks like he’ll end his career as a really good defensive coordinator." I guess this is as good a place as any to mention my mild surprisement that quarterbacks coach Tom Clements wasn't mentioned on ESPN's list of assistant coaches.

A solid statistical analysis of a pair of Packers wide receivers is written by Bleacher Report writer Mike Hsu, although the article is awkwardly framed by asking, "Is it time to start Jordy Nelson over Donald Driver?" In other words, is it time for Nelson to play the first offensive play of every game instead of Driver? The statistical analysis is appreciated but asking whether one should start over another is not. It's entirely possible that both deserve to be contributing parts of the passing game and play a roughly equal number of snaps, regardless of who is on the field the first play of the game.
