Packers Daily Links: Family Says Favre Unlikely To Come Back

The will-he-or-won't-he saga that is Brett Favre continues to pop up in the media. That and more in today's Daily Links...

On the calendar today is annual Packers Hall of Fame Golf Classic at The Bull in Sheboygan Falls, Wis....

Through interviews with old-time Brett Favre spokesperson Al Jones of the Sun Herald in Southern Mississippi, family members have said the former Packers quarterback will not come back for the 2011 season. “I would say there’s less than a 1 percent chance (he would return),” brother Scott Favre said. “He is retired.” Favre's mother Bonita said he's crazy if he comes back and hopes he would not.

A new book on the Lombardi-era Packers is being released by Warren Gerds of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "In Warren Gerds' second book, 'Tales of a Newspaperman: Ice Bowl and Lombardi Through Time,' he takes readers back in time to several stories he has written for the Green Bay Press-Gazette, with a focus on one of the most historic football games to ever be played and a coach whose presence still is felt in Green Bay," according to colleague Kelcie McCrae. The article says copies are available throughout Wisconsin but doesn't go into much more detail than that.

The possibility of the Packers losing defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins in free agency is discussed by Steve Wyche of NFL.com. "Jenkins will be desired by a few teams that play a 3-4 front, but there could be a better chance than many of us think of Green Bay being competitive to retain the highly effective end. If Jenkins is lost, you know the Packers feel they have people to step up. Second-year man Mike Neal appears to be the player being spoken most highly about to step in for Jenkins. He didn't get a lot of playing time last season due to a shoulder injury, but there's a lot of positive buzz about him in Green Bay." Guys like Howard Green and C.J. Wilson must step up their game in the absence of Jenkins as well.

Speaking of Mike Neal, the consensus at AllGreenBayPackers.com is that Neal is the player most likely to become a starter after being a backup, although T.J. Lang is listed as well. "If anything T.J. Lang proved in 2009 that he can play in the NFL, whether he ends up being a backup or a starter in the future has yet to be decided but he definitely belongs in the NFL," writes Thomas Hobbes. "That can’t be said with any of the other potential starting linemen.  In my opinion Lang gets the first shot at left guard should Daryn Colledge leave." Lang will have some competition for the job coming from first-round draft choice Derek Sherrod, Nick McDonald and Marshall Newhouse.

Some transactions are needed for the Packers to fit under the proposed salary cap this season. "The Packers are barely beneath a hypothetical salary cap of $120M but that doesn't include signing 10 draft picks and a few of their unrestricted free agents," writes Bill Huber of Packer Report (subscription required). "To make room, these players might not put on the green-and-gold this season." I was banging this drum about a month ago. It's looking like something has to happen with both Nick Barnett and Mark Tauscher.

A question and answer session with running back John Kuhn appears at Packer Report as well (sub required).

The value of Winston Moss is espoused by Brandon Benson of Acme Packing Company.

Clay Matthews is not the best defensive player in the NFL, according to Matt Smith of Packer Chatters.

A list of potential undrafted free agents the Packers could sign appears at Talkin' S-Mac.

The success of the Packers running backs is predicted by a Bleacher Report writer in slideshow fashion (surprise, surprise!).

Wow, zero information and zero analysis about why there may be a better chance of Cullen Jenkins staying than I think there is. Interesting since other writers are analyzing who the Packers have under contract now that may have to be dumped. Thanks Sam Wyche. :-) So to fill in the thought that Sam didn't have, I'll offer that maybe the market for a guy who is over 30, over 300 lbs. and who frequently gets nagging little injuries will prove to be much less lucarative than Mr. Jenkins hopes. He then decides to stay in Green Bay.

No way. Jenkins is going to get big bucks - somewhere else.

Let's see, (1) Zero reported overtures from TT + (2) D-lineman + (3) Produces sacks = (6) Someone will pay him, and it won't be TT. You are correct sir!

I should have added to my original post that I think there is zero chance that Jenkins will be back. So Sam Wyche was right in that respect - there is probably some miniscule chance Jenkins will be back.

“I would say there’s less than a 1 percent chance (he would return),” brother Scott Favre said.

So you're tellin' me there's a chance!

Well, whether is coming back or not is not over until his daughter has her say. It must have been pleasant to know for Rodgers just whose hands his career future was in. If I were a few of these bubble QB's in the league I'd be sweating out what Breleigh's thoughts are. If she were smart she'd be shilling for kickbacks to talk daddy into staying retired.

Back to back daily links have one to PackersChatters? If Brian comes up missing anytime soon Corey better have one hell of an alibi because I for one wouldn't be surprised if that would be more than enough motive to push him over the edge and make him snap.
