I mentioned him in Gut Reactions. But there's no way anyone besides Rodgers Jennings and Driver get in the Good this week.

This. Jenkins also had 2 sacks.

But can anyone put anyone ahead of those 3? I think not.

49ers scored only 16 points, offense has 3 players in the good, defense gets no mention and is critized in the bad.

I agree with DD, but A-rod or Jennings (who play very well) could have been replaced by someone with 2 sacks.

You need a UGLY stick for the 49'ers against Driver in the TD.

It certainly was. That completion to Jones just before halftime could've led to a TD. The Packers were robbed.

This I totaly disagree with, if we do anything this year and why we are where we are is becase of the defense, players like Jenkins playing with one hand and Zombo stepping up to the plate will get the Pack to the promised land.

Those sacks are just as important as anything for that win.

To totally exclude the defense in the good is wrong, if it wasn't for defense A-rod, DD, and Jennings would be playing for nothing but repsect this time of the year.

But its not about what the defense has done up to this point - its about what happened today. Yes, there were some great plays on defense. But Rodgers, Jennings and Driver made the biggest plays of the game. Driver's run after the catch alone should have its own category.

haha i agree with the person above me.. and i dont take the running game improvement seriously the 49ers have no defense to speak of obviously the run game will look good
i really dont like the fact that our defense only gets turnovers against bad teams.. 75-80% of our INTs are against terrible teams never against good teams.. zombo was only credited with 1 sack raji got the other.. jenkins had 2. matthews hasnt gotten one in 2 weeks kind of sad..
still not happy with how we are playing.. 49ers shouldnt have had so much hope in the first quarter.. even the first half they are were still in the game.. we should have blown the doors off them from the get go.. catn come out that slow against good teams.. great win. but im thinking if this was the falcons or the pats scenario.. u gotta treat every game like ur playin the best team in the nfl

But most of the yards came in junk time against a tired defense. It still gives the Packers hope that Starks and Jackson can be a good one two punch the rest of the season. I liked how Starks took care of the Football.
My good: Jenkins, Driver (he deserves credit playing with a bad stomach) and Rodgers
My bad: Officiating, Masthay, Safeties (man they looked overwhelmed against Davis, who does not even have a good year yet)
My UGLY: Those throwbacks. YUK

Playing devil's advocate... I would counter with the fact that the 49ers KNEW that Green Bay was going to predominantly run the ball in the 4th quarter. Tired or not, they should have been able to cut the running game a bit shorter.

I agree, the throw backs were true old school football uniforms. They are Packer tradition like it or not. The thing that made them look bad was the use of the contemporary number on the back that the league dictated.

I think the "one-two" punch in the RUNNING game is going to be Starks and Nance. Nance will be more of the short yardage guy.

Brandon Jackson is going to get touches in the run game on 3rd down probably, but he's going to end up getting more touches in the receiving game I think.

I was at the game and was SO frustrated by Masthay. He looked GREAT in warmups when it was at least 5 degrees cooler so I dont think the performance can be blamed on the cold. He seriously only had 3 punts not land inside the 10 and 2 of them were inside the 20. The last one was from the 10 yard line.

Also, maybe I missed crediting him on a bad play but I thought Peprah played pretty darn well. He had a lot of plays in the first half that he was physical around the line of scrimmage and was flowing very well. He looked really good in run situations and other than the long ball to Crabtree in the 1st quarter (which was a GREAT double move that Tramon Williams, who isnt on the Bad list, bit on as well) stayed over the top pretty well.

The 49ers were ranked #6 in the NFL against the run coming into the game with the Packers.

@andrew

Your point about Clay Matthews' play being "sad" is pretty much negated by what you said just prior... Jenkins, Raji, and Zombo all got sacks. You can bet that a good part of that is Matthew's presence on the field. Even if he isn't making the big plays, he's drawing opposing players to him, which frees up some of the other defensive guys on the line.

No doubt, Matthews was double and sometimes triple covered yesterday. Even if he is not getting sacks, he helps the rest of the D. And he was good against the run once again.

i know that he is helping other people make sacks.. just wanted him to have the most sacks in the league this year and cameron wake passed him this weekend.. so it is sad..
as for the 49ers run defense being 6th.. there defense in general is bad... why run the ball if u can throw it all day? so them being 6th in the league with run defense is something i take with a grain of salt there are other factors u have to consider.. but i might just be being negative i would like to be able to say i think the run game is better i just am not convinced by 1 game

Looking at this game again, seeing details.
Opinion, upon extensive analysis, Packers beat the sht outta the 9'ers.
How about them jerseys.

I'm hoping this was merely a case of getting used to the frozen football for Masthay.

Horrible game for him? Yes. But if he improves as he has up until now, then I'm not going to worry much.

Oh, and I'll echo the sentiments about the officiating. It was disgusting.

Can't really argue with the list. Special teams penalties are ugly, once again. It is completely amazing to me how we continue to get flagged on special teams plays. I just don't understand how you can't fix that.

The Packers kept their top spot in scoring defense and moved into the top 10 (10th) in team defense (YPG) after yesterday. We gave up 269 yards. I think the defense is taking a little too much heat today. We stiffened up and held San Fran to FGs on two drives after they drove inside our 10 yard line. Yeah, there were some bad plays (Collins' whiff), but overall this was a pretty good defensive effort IMO. Two years ago we'd have been dancing in the streets after a defensive game like this.

The 49ers left a lot on the field. Troy Smith missed a lot of open passes, and the receivers dropped a lot of easy balls.

To me, it's noticeable the difference in the performance of our D against MN, NYJ and DAL to the performance against the Falcons, and specially yesterday.

I really think CM3 being injuried is hurting this team a lot.

I don't think it's CM3 and the pass rush, though. If anything, the middle of the Packers D-line aren't getting the credit they deserve for collapsing the middle of the pocket and forcing the QB/pocket to move. They're doing so weekly.

From my perspective, the safeties were playing at a higher level in the games you mentioned above. For whatever reason, Peprah and Collins are missing WR handoffs more often in zone play and not as stout/dependable tacklers as they were.

There's no reason to believe it's going to trend that way, but a better QB than Smith would have taken advantage. In the playoffs, they can't make those mistakes and advance.

I agree that the defense was not as good yesterday as it has been in recent weeks. But my point is that it was still pretty good, and did make some timely plays.

I was mildly paranoid that we would have a letdown yesterday. We have put together a pretty impressive string of games overall, and no team can do that every single week. We did what we had to do yesterday.

Yes, but in those games, the QB was always under pressure.

In the big play to Davis, sure, Collins missed stupidly, but Troy Smith has a beautiful pocket to work with, despite a 5 man rush.

On that one particular play, full agreement about a pocket being present. The middle of the line still moved Smith around and last week they moved Ryan. Difference is, Ryan is consistantly accurate, Smith is not.

Aaron,

I know what you mean about Driver's reception being the play of the game, but I slightly disagree. I thought Cullen Jenkins sack on 2nd and goal was the play that turned the game around. Maybe the Pack goes down 10-0 on that drive and are looking at a 2 score defecit. Up until that point, Packers were flat emotionally giving up extended drives to the 49ers and suffering a disheartening missed field goal after a long drive. That sack changed the emotion for the team. This is why I would put Cullen in the Good

I will remember that Donald Driver touchdown for year's to come. Gave me chills watching it. So happy for him.

I would put James Starks in the "good". I don't think they need to run him more than they already are, but he played his role well. Like many have said, he hits the gaps quicker and gets much more yards after he's hit than Jackson does. If they can work Starks into the passing game it will be much harder to account for the offense with Starks, Jackson, Kuhn and even Nance in the rotation. Like McCarthy said today, each back brings a level of predictability to the play-call when they're on the field.

It's a good rotation that probably hasn't reached it's potential though. I really like what Starks brings to the table. Only one game though. We'll see.

Props to management for holding off on Starks as he probably benefitted greatly from the chance to get healthy. As much as I want to criticize management for not holding a roster spot open for Grant, they really have done a spectacular job at managing the roster with all the problems they've had. Much props to Thompson and Capers for avoiding many of the pitfalls of the 2008 season. Can someone start a extendedtedthompson.com site please?
