My Expectations for the 2025 Green Bay Packers
Tim's thoughts on what's in store for the Packers this year.
By TimBackes

Next week, I will reveal the results of the survey many of you have already taken that asked you to give your expectations for the 2025 Packers. It's one of my favorite columns each year, and provides a real good measure of the pulse of the fanbase heading into training camp.
[By the way, if you haven't yet done the survey, here's the link to do so.]
I'm going to begin compiling the results this weekend; we're around 400 responses so far, and I'd love to get to at least 500. But this year I thought I'd do something I haven't done previously; a quick column the week before about my OWN responses to the poll.
So here we go!
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being "this team is going to be a disaster" and 10 being "we're the team to beat in the NFL," how good do you feel about this Packers team heading into training camp?
Tough question to answer, but right now I'd probably say 7. This is a little pessimistic for me, and I do genuinely think that the Packers have a lot of good pieces in place to make a deep run this season, but we just didn't ever really see it all gel together last year. And what's strange is the offense is actually a bigger concern for me at the moment than the defense. I'm looking forward to a year two Jeff Hafley defense with more focus on guys like Edgerrin Cooper and hopefully some improved pass rush.
But I really need to see the pass catching corps settle in before I can feel a little more confident about what this team can do, especially when you consider the brutal division in which they play (and their abysmal record within it last season). I also need to see Jordan Love come out and be THAT DUDE right out of the gate this year. He had a good 2024 campaign, but not as big of a step forward as I'd been hoping for coming into the season.
Q: How many games will the Packers win this year?
I'm somewhere in that 11-12 range, I think. Looking at the schedule, I'm going to go 12 wins and 5 losses.
Q: Which of the Packers' opponents pose the toughest matchup for the team in 2025?
I'm sure a lot of people here are going to go with the Lions or the Eagles, which makes sense, certainly. But I'm going to go with the Baltimore Ravens. It's an unfamiliar opponent with an incredibly dynamic threat at quarterback that is extremely well coached. The Packers are at least famliar enough with what the Lions and Eagles do that those games, although more meaningful for the Packers' playoff seeding, don't strike me as being quite the challenge that Baltimore does.
Q: How far will the Packers go this year?
I really want to believe this is a Super Bowl team, but I'm not there yet. Depending on how the seeding works out, I'd say they're out either in the divisional playoffs or the conference championship.
Q: Will the Packers win the NFC North in 2025?
This is a really tough one, but I'm going to say yes. I don't believe what Minnesota did was sustainable, and I think the Lions are going to have a hard time repeating after losing both coordinators. Plus, it's hard to hold on to that crown for multiple years.
Q: Where will the Packers' offense rank in 2025?
I foresee some tough going early on, but I think eventually this is a top 10 unit.
Q: Where will the Packers' defense rank in 2025?
I'm going to drink the kool-aid and say top 10 as well.
Q: Who will win in the first (and likely only) matchup between Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love?
Come on now; who do you think I'm picking? Love and the Packers.
Q: Will Jordan Love be a *consensus* top 10 QB in the NFL by the end of the season?
I think he's already borderline, but I do believe that he will be there by the end of the season.
Q: Will the Packers have a true #1 receiver this year, and if yes, who is it most likely to be?
I don't think there's going to be a wide receiver who truly cements themselves in that spot this year. Obviously the Packers want Matthew Golden to be that guy, but that's a lot to ask out of a rookie with a receiving corps this deep. If anything, I think Tucker Kraft is going to be that guy in clutch situations that Love gravitates towards.
Q: What player will be the biggest (positive) surprise in 2025?
Really hoping for a pass rusher here like LVN or Rashan Gary, but I think it's Dontayvion Wicks. Wicks had a tough sophomore season with drops, but he was still open all the time. Plenty of former Packer receivers have come back from drop issues early in their careers to be effective players over the long term. I think Wicks has that potential.
Q: Which player not named Jordan Love will be most vital to the team's success in 2025?
When Josh Jacobs is doing his thing, this is a different team. The Packers need him to repeat what he did in 2024 to keep this offense in prime shape.
Q: What are you most looking forward to about the Packers' 2025 season?
Growth. This is still such a young team, and so many guys are still writing the first chapters of their stories. Lots of players have the potential to take huge steps forward this year. That potential is a little frightening, but also so exciting.
Q: Bonus: What teams will be playing in this year's Super Bowl?
I think the Bills finally break through this year. In the NFC, it's really anyone's game. It's boring to say Philly and I'll be cold and dead in the ground before I say Detroit or Minnesota, so... whatever, Philly I guess. But hope

My biggest surprise was Tim picking Wicks for his (positive) surprise. I can't remember what I put when I answered on the poll, but that's a very good one that I didn't even think about and would be exciting.
All in all, the only obstacle that will make or break the Packers' season is injuries. No excuses for division games, execution, or play calling allowed in Love's 3rd season as a starter, the 2nd season for this D and less worrisome special teams.

Too many good receivers for Wicks to "break out" as the teams biggest surprise with expected increased focus on TE and RB receiving targets and the addition of Golden and Williams.
I picked Cox, Jr. He is on the cusp of breakout, witnessed by his tremendous production last year during his limited snaps...I don't think anyone was as effective or efficient as Cox, Jr. was on the DL last year / snap. He has seemingly matured, has worked hard, and been a solid teammate.

Considering that the defense was #6 last year, it's not drinking the Kool-Aid to project them in the top 10 this year. The schedule is tougher, but I still think they will be there in the end.
It's hard to predict surprises. That's why they are called surprises. How about Bo Melton making the roster as a CB and actually getting some meaningful playing time on defense?

"My Expectations for the 2025 Green Bay Packers"
More Beer Barrel Polkaz! More memories. More nail biters, more defense, more chili, more of those wholesome cheerleaders, more women taking off their shirts than overweight men at Lambeau, more less-groomed eyebrows, more vegan options at the concessions, more Heidi interruptions if the Packers are getting shelled and the big-boned lady is singing, more Chucky Cecil, more players that can sing the national anthem like Esera Tuaulo (sp?), more tailgating with hot chick's that find me simply irresistible, more less lines at the restrooms, more kids getting a chance to see grown up fans acting like grown up fans, AI [artificial intelligence not Jersey] being able to have Jim Irwin and Max MaGee and Howard Cossell (and Bob Ueker) call games on the radio waves again, allow AI to get my Pet Rock from the 70s to actually offer me advice on life, more DL and OL Lambeau Leaps, more or less a season to rejoice and be ecstatic to ride shotgun on this NFL journey...
Crib note: I guess, what I am trying to say is; less maple syrup and more piss boiling. That, and Lambeau Field hosting a Big Lebowski Fest in 2026 for all of us lil' Underacheivers.
Sweaty hugs and sloppy kisses,

The DL unit under-.performed last year and all GB has done is replace the coach- Was that really enough? A team cannot progress w/o a strong, consistent D-Line
I would like to place the potential 'blame' evenly among all under-performers and pull back a bit on focusing on how Love needs to save the day. He cannot fix the D-L nor make up for the rather thin secondary unit. He cannot make WR#3's catch the ball consistently or run better routes. Let's objectively assess some of the weaker links that could impact GB's success.

If the D line is healthy it’s already better than last year with Clark and Wyatt hurt most of the season. And the roster might not be complete. They could add someone when expensive vets are cut. Or maybe a UDFA actually steps up.

The Packers have a good team, and they should be able to run the ball pretty well against most teams. If they can avoid stopping themselves with dropped passes, this should be a 30ppg offense. I think Golden will end up on some All-Rookie teams.
Defense is good enough to keep games close. I don't think we'll give up 30 very many times this season.
I'm expecting 12 wins.

Even though I had high expectations for the team last year due to overdelivering in the Playoffs after the '23 playoffs, I have far more confidence in the team this year.
The Defense became one of the NFL's best units by going from dwelling in the cellar to on the roof in points and yards/game. The were amazingly one of the best tackling squads turning a weakness into a strength due to buy in on Hafley's Vision and Break Pressure Defense. They will only get better.
Love too will be better behind a stronger OL and an even deeper WR room, prolific RBs and Kraft.
STs are concerning as Bicassia hasn't moved the needle much...and they were at times very sloppy. Just be average and take care of field position.
If LaFluer was ever going to get it done this will be the year. I don't think Hafley is going to be a Packer DC much longer.

I have a fear of agreement with you. If Hafley keeps doing the job he's doing he may be the first branch on the MLF coaching tree to get pruned away. So far it has basically been, nobody. But Hafley might be that guy and he is the one right now I believe they would really miss.

I wouldn't mind it if he were our HC.

Spot on comments LP! And I agree with you about Hafley. If the defense plays as well as I expect it to this year, Hafley is going to be a hot commodity, particularly with his prior head coaching experience (college).

I don't think a #10 scoring defense is "dwelling in the cellar" Adding McKinney, Williams, Bullard, and Cooper to the defense definitely made it better. I agree that it's definitely a better-than-average defense.

Mecole Hardman taking one or 2 to the house on kick offs would be a nice start to those special teams.

Nice idea to offer your expectations first, Tim. They align pretty much with my biased homer-take on the upcoming season. That's the fun of being a fan even while knowing that life is filled with disappointments.
The Packers have a roster of talented young athletes. Let's see if they can become a team with some swagger and purpose every week. GPB

Expecting 12 wins is a lot. I wouldn't make that an expectation as the schedule is harder than last year and the division will be challenging as well. The o/u is 9.5 so to expect 12 would be 2.5 over that.

Harder? We played 2 games against a 15 win team, 2 games against a 14 win team, the eventual Super Bowl Champion, and the Rams and Texans. That’s almost half our games against playoff teams.

The Lions and Vikings should come back to earth a little, which will help. Still, the AFC North will be tougher than the AFC South was last year, and the NFC East will be tougher than the NFC West was last year. The good news is that the Lions and Vikings have to play all those teams too, plus a few different opponents who will be harder for them.

The lions will be getting a healthy defense including their all pro edge who was injured most of the season. All the analyst are picking Detroit to win the division. Only the eagles stand in their way.

Perhaps we should place our win expectations in writing right now. I am predicting 9 wins.

Enough national pundits make the mistake of equating “dOiNg StUfF” with improvement in the offseason. Don’t make that mistake. The Packers steady-eddy approach is going to continue to result in a lot of wins. Including making the playoffs again this year at the very low end of outcomes.

This is going to be a good team. But it has to take a few big steps yet.
First win big games. They have to learn to win these and that will take the whole year to develop.
Second, the passing will be good and too the running game. But they have to learn to grind out scores in big games. Which means a OL that can get Jacobs better holes. And having short passing that uses Kraft to his maximum. The team struggled with this last year. And Jacobs had to do too much on his ownn
And a little bit better pass rush. We can complain, but just remember the defense held Philly to the least amount.

I think if we stay healthy and have a lot of luck we can make the playoffs. Detroit will win the division easily. Philadelphia likely to repeat as the Superbowl champs.
Latest report on ESPN 's top 12 teams did not even have the Pack in the top 12. They had Steelers for 12th best even with Rodgers at QB.
If Love can play like he did in 23 we will really be in the hunt. I don't think the rest of the league fears the Packers. That could change on opening day with a victory over Detroit! Better be ready Matt.

Prior to the 2024-25 season - I thought that the Packers could be a SB team this year - with a good off-season. I think that Gutekunst has met this requirement. So my expectation is that the GBP will perform their way into the Championship Game. And win. That being so - I will be placing a wager on this outcome.
