McCarthy's Use Of The "T"

Mike McCarthy has a lot of options out of the "T Formation".

As always, Mike Tanier over at Football Outsiders does some fantastic work in his latest Walkthrough column. His latest looks at Mike McCarthy dusting off the "T Formation" this past weekend.

The entire thing is worth reading, and Mike does a great job explaining the situation and the personnel that was involved on Sunday. But the part that I think is the most important comes at the end of his section on the "T":

Now that opponents have seen the Packers run the T-formation, you can bet they will counter with a 5-3-3 personnel package or other adjustments that can take away the simple Kuhn plunge. Here's hoping that McCarthy has some multiple-fake razzle dazzle hidden away for just the right situation. I think all of us would love to see it.

Couldn't agree more. From my Twitter feed on Tuesday:

Looking at McCarthy's use of the T Formation on short yardage - don't be surprised if he goes play action out of that later in the year.

My hunch is McCarthy will try to sneak Brandon Jackson in on one of the wings and run a play-action fake to Kuhn and then throw to Jackson or a tight end on a Rodgers bootleg.

Yes, in this T formation, it's not 2 TEs. it's the 1 WR variation.

How about the old "statue of liberty" or the "hidden ball" plays?

" run a play-action fake to Kuhn and then throw to Jackson or a tight end on a Rodgers bootleg. "

Or AR could jog into the endzone on that same bootleg ..... Save it for the Giants or Bears ...... Both front 7s are always going forward ...... Both can be fooled .....

"Here's hoping that McCarthy has some multiple-fake razzle dazzle hidden away for just the right situation."

I was thinking the same thing.

Direct snap to Kuhn, he fakes to Jackson, spins, fake throws, hands off to Rogers. Rogers runs down the line and pitches to Starks and Starks is going to pass........but wait...it's a reverse to Kuhn who runs parallel to the line of scrimmage for no gain.

Now that's 1929 football!
