Mark Murphy Feels the Clock Ticking on the NFL Season

Mark Murphy knows the clock is ticking on the 2020 NFL season.

While the NFL is still preparing for a full slate of regular season games, the ongoing situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic has made many increasingly fearful that the NFL season will be in jeopardy.

At the very least, Packers CEO Mark Murphy realizes the dire nature of the situation, having recently stated that "Time is no longer on our side."

Here's a selection from Murphy's recent Packers.com column addressing the issue:

"With training camps set to start in less than a month and with COVID-19 showing no signs of slowing down, the Packers will have to make several difficult decisions in the coming weeks. Since the pandemic arrived earlier this year, NFL teams have had the benefit of time. Unlike professional basketball, hockey and baseball teams who were either in hte middle of their seasons or about to start, we were in the beginning of our offseason. NFL teams were able to handle free agency, the draft and their entire offseason programs virtually.

We've made decisions along the way, but the major ones we've been able to put off until we have more information. With so much uncertainty, it has made sense that we have not made decisions until we absolutely have to. As we near the start of training camp, though (rookies will start practice on July 21 and veterans on the 28th), time is no longer on our side."

The NFL has already cut the preseason, but the plan remains to have a full slate of regular season games, with most of the league allowing fans to be in attendance to some degree.

There's almost no chance the season will progress as the league is hoping right now. At the very least, it should be expected that there will be no fans in stadiums, anywhere. Already, the Buffalo BIlls announced last week there would be no fans at the stadium during the pandemic, and it's only a matter of time until other teams follow suit either of their own will or via NFL mandate.

From the league's perspective, all eyes are going to be on what happens with the NBA and MLB, which are slated to resume/begin their seasons shortly. If either or both ends up being a disaster, the NFL may decide the risk of going on with the season is not worth it.

From the Packers' perspective, the more the season is put into jeopardy, the better the team's 2020 draft looks. The Packers drew the understandable ire of fans by mostly ignoring positions of need in the draft, especially with top selections. But if the 2020 season cannot happen due to the pandemic, a possibility that had to at least have some slight weight in the teams' draft plans this spring, suddenly the long-term approach doesn't look nearly as bad, especially with the drafting of Jordan Love.

Aaron Rodgers will play most of the season as a 36-year-old quarterback before turning 37 in December. A lost season is significant at this point in his career and his contract. If the Packers truly feel Love is Rodgers' successor, and if the 2020 season ends up not happening due to the virus, then the team may have managed to snag its next franchise quarterback while also not getting bitten by the gamble of going without a wide receiver or defensive line selection in the draft.

Ultimately, we all want football this year. A fall without Green Bay Packers football is unimaginable; it hasn't happened since 1918. But there is increasingly less reason for optimism given the current situation with the virus and its spikes across the nation. Mark Murphy certainly sees the window closing, and the NFL should at least abandon the notion that it will be able to pull of anything even remotely resembling "business as usual" with the 2020 season.

I’m wondering if maybe we get perhaps a 12-14 game season while maybe starting in October sometime? Who knows right? Just hoping we can get some football in this year. *sigh*

There’s going to be serious rioting after the election and you can’t play games in the middle of a gunfight

It doesn’t matter who wins, the losers are going to believe they were cheated. Thus, the rioting

That's quite a statement, dblbogey. I'll bet if you think really hard you can recall some looting and rioting. Maybe a time when a group of god-fearing conservatives looted an entire continent and used slave labor to create "the finest country in history?" There was that whole tea party thing in Boston, too.

Or, if you want to look at present day looting, you could Google a list of companies that received funding under the Paycheck Protection Program intended for small businesses. There's some really familiar names there; Jared Kushner, Rudy Giuliani, Kanye West, Donald Trump Jr, you know, small business people in need of help to save jobs. Some might even call them conservatives.

If Trump supporters take to the streets and start shooting, it’s going to be the most horrible thing most of us have ever seen.

My humble opinion is once they are kneeling for the anthem, you will see a drop in ratings. Millions of people do find that to be disrespectful to what they consider the finest country in history. The country is amazingly divided.

It's also my fear. The smearing of the game with divisive politics is as sickening as the violent rioting and hate filled actions in our cities. I love the Pack, but if we are going to inject dishonoring our sacred flag and national anthem week after week, then maybe there shouldn't any games. If we can't honor our sacred and unifying symbols that represent freedom, equality, justice, victory, peace, hope, and those fought and died for these values, then we either shouldn't display the flag and the sing the anthem at our football games, or take a pause when cooler heads will prevail.

Love is not a franchise quarterback as much as the Packers propaganda machine wants us to think. The Packers will not strike gold 3 times in a row.

Sounds pretty promising! And, as a bonus, he gets to sit for 2-3 years to learn his craft at the NFL level behind a HOF QB. Remind you of anyone else?

Didn't you also post in another recent CHTV article that COVID-19 has been found to be bacterial as opposed to viral, based on reports you've read, to bolster the conspiracy theory that it was produced in some deep state lab?
You might want to consider new reading material.

You do realize, it can take up to 2-3 years to find a vaccine for disease and viruses. Good luck with them finding one in the next year.

Here's hoping.

All fans can have an impact this year by following the directions of the health experts. Without slowing this thing down, there's no season. It won't be roger notsogoodell's fault or dr fauci or barack obama or joe bidens or dj trumps, it will be ours. GPG

I've been a die-hard Packer fan since 1963. But... with all the issues regarding our flag, our statues, our National Anthem, this virus, the protesting, the disrespect for our President and Law enforcement, our bias, and lying media, the total discord in Congress, the statement that God is now offensive, and many other disconcerting issues I think football should take a back seat until our country is brought back together. PS: Go Redskins !

Anyones guess for sure. My two cents revolves around the stars of the sports. What is star QB comes down with it or QB and RB and receiver and they have to miss three or more games. Kind of puts the sesason in the crapper if you will.
Not to mention football is a contact sport, lots of contact. It will be super easy for an entire team to come down with it.
I see a mess ahead for the fans, the players and the sport.
