Key Takeaways from the Packers 53-Man Roster

When the Packers released their 53-man roster Saturday, there were a few surprises and here are some of the key takeaways from the final roster moves of GM Brian Gutekunst.

While many were captivated by the first full Saturday of college football, there was a lot of roster movement going on in the NFL, including the Green Bay Packers who trimmed their roster from 90 players down to 53.

It's always hard to predict what the roster will look like and it's hard to say that this 53-man roster will be the final version. In making the final cuts, there was plenty of intrigue and even a few a surprises from first-year general manager Brian Gutekunst.

One of the most notable parts of the roster is that for now at least, it features eight wide receivers. Davante Adams, Randall Cobb, Geronimo Allison, J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown and Jake Kumerow all made it. It seems like a lot but it was worth it to keep guys like Kumerow and St. Brown. Both probably would have been claimed and each flashed enough potential to keep.

Kumerow's injury situation will be interesting to watch. Another thing to keep an eye on is Trevor Davis. There were rumors that the Packers were trying to trade him Saturday, which would seem to put his roster spot in jeopardy. If he is on the 53 next week, he should be the top return guy for the Packers but it's another situation to monitor. However, both Mike McCarthy and Gutekunst spoke highly of Davis in the preseason, even when he didn't play, so I think he's sticking around to be the return guy.

Another really interesting thing was that the Packers kept just two backs. Not just two running backs but zero fullbacks. Aaron Ripkowsko and Joe Kerridge were both cut and so was Davante Mays. Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery are the only running backs currently on the roster. Of course, Aaron Jones will return in two weeks after suspension, so running back should be fine. Yet, the jettisoning of both fullbacks, who were on the roster last season, was surprising. It appears that if the Packers are going to run with a lead blocker, a tight end like Mercedes Lewis will be called upon to do it.

One thing that shouldn't have shocked anyone was the fact that rookie quarterback Tim Boyle made the roster. It was reported by Rob Demovsky of ESPN after the Brett Hundley trade that he would and he did. It seems to me that Boyle and Deshone Kizer spend the next year fighting to be Aaron Rodgers long-term backup because it feels like a waste of a roster spot to always carry three quarterbacks. Let's see if the Packers cut Boyle at some point and try to sneak him onto the practice squad. It's easier to do during the season than on cut-down day. Something to watch too.

When it comes to the offensive line, there were even some head-turning moves. I didn't expect the Packers to keep Alex Light. I thought it would be Adam Pankey and I also didn't see Jason Spriggs making it, however, that was before Kyle Murphy went to IR. Bryon Bell, Lucas Patrick, Spriggs and Light are the four backups on the offensive line, so Green Bay better pray its starting five stays healthy.

On the other side of the ball, a couple of young defensive backs earned their way onto the roster as Herb Waters beat out Demetri Goodson for a roster spot and safety Raven Greene also made the 53, which tells me that the Packers may be using Josh Jones more at inside linebacker. If they aren't, they should in the absence of Oren Burks. Certainly, Jones may not take on an offensive lineman that well, but in sub packages, he is worth consideration. Blake Martinez, Burks, Antonio Morrison and James Crawford made it at inside linebacker. Ahmad Thomas seemed like a good bet for a roster spot and if not, you thought his spot would go to fellow rookie Greer Martini. Yet, both were cut in favor of Crawford and Morrison.

Crawford is a converted defensive end who seems like more of a project. We'll see if either Thomas or Martini finds their way onto the practice squad. At outside linebacker, the Vince Biegel experiment is officially over. Many believed the Packers would keep five edge rushers and that the final spot came down to Biegel and Chris Odom, but both were released, which tells me they believe some of their defensive linemen, like Muhammad Wilkerson, can rush from the edge.

If you had to point out some surprises, Crawford, Light, St. Brown and Greene were probably the biggest, along with the release of Thomas, who had seemingly played well enough to make it.

Cut-down day is brutal and one of my biggest takeaways is that more than keeping guys for need, Gutekunst tried to keep the best players he could. That's a good thing. Obviously, some positions need certain numbers for depth but he didn't need eight receivers. But if you think you have a player, then you should keep him and that's what the Packers did. Certainly, there will be more roster attrition to come, but for now, this is the 53-man roster Green Bay will take into the 2018 season.

Rollins/Murphy/ Mays- Waived= Injury settlement. Too bad on Rollins getting injured. Bet he'd make the club. Again this is the right thing to do.

Allowing for the fact that they kept Waters on potential, I still don’t see what Rollins showed to
make the team at this point.

In my view, he has been misused. He should be, and have been, a safety. He is not one yet. I would have been ok with a PS spot to develop him in that role, but I think his contract is over after this season and I haven’t seen evidence yet that he can make the transition. With his injury, it seems likely he is not going to get a chance with the Packers.

The rules changed this year. They are complex, but I think they work as follows:

If a player practices in camp not only can he not go on the PUP list, but he can also not go be designated to return unless he is on at least the initial 53 man roster.

None of these players were retained on the initial roster. Had they been, they could have been moved to IR today and designated to return.

Since they were moved to IR in the preseason, there are two possible outcomes. They can be paid and retained on IR for the season if no team claims them before noon central time today and they count full value against the cap.

Alternatively, the team can designate them for a short term IR list. This is effectively the waived injured option. If they clear waivers, the team can reach an injury settlement once they pass a physical. The waiving team can not resign that player for a further 6 weeks thereafter, but any other team can sign them immediately. The cap hit is reduced to the amount of time on IR plus settlement I believe. Teams don’t release this information. We only find out when a settlement is filed with the league (or the season ends) usually.

It seems most believe that these three will be offered settlements, in part due to contracts expiring at season end on all 3 I think, but we don’t know.

The only certain thing is that all 3 cannot play for the Packers this year absent release with a settlement and the expiration of a further 6 weeks with them not being on an active roster at that time. If still unsigned, they could then be resigned on a new contract to the active roster or to the PS if they choose.

Hope that helps

Nice Coldwater. Just remember, we don't get the cap relief until the players have signed an injury settlement agreement. My memory is that if Mays thinks he'll be 100% in two weeks, we can reach a settlement with Mays paying him for those two weeks (might negotiate 3 to be certain since sometimes the player is content just to wait until he is healthy), then we can release the player and get the cap space. Other teams can sign Mays as soon as he is healthy, but GB has to wait the 2 or 3 weeks that they paid Mays, plus 3 more weeks (it could be 6, but I didn't check). Injury settlements mean the team is less likely to be able to re-sign the player while other teams have a clear field.

Here's the thing... the roster is still a work in progress. It would be a mistake to think of this as a final roster for the season. The main goal for this 53 is to hold onto players you "can't live without/could possibly trade"... at least for the time being while you sift through the 1000 (or whatever) players that were just released.

Kumerow could be headed to the temporary IR, but you have to be on the 53 first or else you're on it for the whole year. Davis could be still dangling out there as trade bait, with the Packers calling another teams bluff as to "we know you'll release him anyway, why give you a 7th round pick for him". I highly doubt that the Packers will have 8 WR's on the 53 for long.

They could very well have a "wink-nod" deal with a player or two that they cut, that they may come back if they can pull off the Davis trade or Kumerow IR move.

I'm not saying that they're going to bring a FB back, but the thinking could be that it would be a lot easier to re-sign one of them for example, than it would be to sneak Boyle/Kumerow/St. Brown through to the Practice Squad.

I'm just as curious about what will shake out today as I was the initial cutdown yesterday.

Very curious to see who they bring back on the practice squad, yes. Some of the players we seem to be surprised they cut (like Biegel) have PS eligibility, yet, even outside the veteran exemptions.

I think Beigel is done. Saw an article at Madison.com noting he was shocked to be cut. Seemed to think he was progressing well ...

Chris may be on to something with the idea of rushing from the DEs. At least Gutekunst has everyone guessing around the league. Not the same old predictable Packers.

I am beginning to wonder if he just doesn’t get it or if his body just hasn’t the capacity to develop. I expected him to come into the preseason a lot stronger after his experiences at the end of last season being pushed around. Apparently he did not.

Based on a few comments ascribed to him, I am speculating that he did not grasp the need to put the work in. That would explain his play, the team rapidly moving on and his surprise that this could happen.

I think they just want to move on from Cobb. Still think he is on the trading block. And these Rookies really made Good first impressions. MVS - Sterling Sharpe? Moore- carbon copy of Adams? St Brown -Jennings? - Might be a stretch on Jennings. But the chemistry is there with Kizer. Kumerow must not get injured again.

Did you ever see Sterling Sharpe play? You just compared a rookie 5th rd draft pick who has played in 4 preseason games, to a first ballot HOF'er had he not been injured. Thats as silly as Dash saying that Boyle is the next great packer QB.

Sterling Sharpe bench pressed 400 pounds. I personally witnessed him run over HOF DE Chris Doleman on his way to the endzone. I dont see MVS doing that anytime soon. At the time Sharpe or Jerry Rice would have been the BEST receiver in football depending on the day or, who you asked.

Whats next, is someone going to say that Kumerow is the next Don Hutson?

I too am excited about some of these young guys but let's be realiistic. THEY HAVE NOT DONE ANYTHING YET!

Sharpe was special. Watched him close up before a practice with Buckley covering. Both were impressive as to how hard they worked. Sharpe was so big, fast and quick. Didn’t stop talking the whole time he worked in a big booming voice to a lady from New Jersey who wanted his autograph. It was funny. Hard workers. Rumor was him and Favre had their differences, but didn’t stop them from putting together some great moments.

I agree: as long as Spriggs stayed healthy, he was a pretty sure bet based on the poor options they had. I wouldn't be surprised to see him dealt, though, if they find an option they like better. I think the dearth of OL play would give a young, athletic guy on his rookie deal some value--especially given that many of his flaws have been viewed as 'technical' and 'coachable'. Makes you wonder why they haven't been fixed, yet, though...

I was so high on him and he has let me down greatly. Maybe I want to see more of the same but I didn't think he was that much better and will still have a minor freakout the second he has to enter the game.

It's really NOT the roster they are going to take into the season. Not even close. I promise they are talking to other teams' cuts right now. Also, if you want someone on the IR designated to return, I believe he has to be on the 53 to start. One of those WRs will be gone...either to the PS or cut outright. I'd also imagine they think of Cobb as a third RB for the first two games (which might also explain the 8 WR's) .

Interesting observations by NostraDANus:

3 QB's, they must like the Golden Boyle, I thought they could sneak him on the P.S.

No FB on roster? H-Back instead and going with 4 TE's. It's about time! Big Bob Tonyan is a keeper

8 WR? A lot of talent there but the rookies are not ready for primetime. Davis kept as gunner & return guy. When will Kumerow be ready?

2 RB's? Jones will be back after game 2, looks like McCarthy & Philben plan on airing it out with Aaron.

Crawford at ILB? The guy was Team Captain at Illinois, good coverage guy, aggressive, great special teams guy.
Surprised he made it over Ahmad Brooks although he's bigger and provides more thump! Morrison provides some thump and attitude!

Light at OT? This was a head scratcher but they must see something over Pankey.

Raven Green S? He was OK in pre-season, made a bunch of plays in Division III at JMU, surprised he beat out Evans.

4 OLB's? They will acquire a veteran soon I'm sure of it.

Long snapper? Surprised they kept the draft choice but he's obviously cheaper and signed for 4 years on a rookie contract. Hope he doesn't cost them a game.

Of course there will be several moves today and a few of these guys the Packers will try and stash on the P.S.

Should be an interesting Sunday.

Go Pack!

3 Qbs -Agree on Boyle/// 8 Wrs- Don't pat them on the back. Ride their Butt. Adams was the worst route runner I've every seen. Had they not worked him, kept sending him out, he would have flopped. The improvement/light went on. The same must happen with these youngsters. Get them off the bench. 2 Rbs perfect with Jones coming back. Look for Cobb at RB too. Crawfords fine, but the packers haven't heard the last on Biegel. Still think Jones and Burks, get Crawford cut. Green and Evans were a draw. Evans made to many mistakes last year. OLBs are to thin.

I don't know why people don't get this or are somehow surprised he's on the active roster. If they put Boyle on the practice squad he's as good as gone. I can only conclude there's many people here who never actually watched the preseason games. If they did they would see the incredible talent he has. He's the best qb prospect we've had since Aaron Rodgers in 2005. You don't expose a franchise talent like that. You just don't. He'll be a wasted roster space for a year but trust me he'll be worth it times a million down the road.

The Packers like him enough to keep him and develop him. Nobody is going to be offering anything for Boyle at this point in time and you know that.

Could also be said if he completed a pass to Kendricks!

You don't have to be a genius to figure out Fat
Boys' game plan. Kept on the 53: 8 receivers & 2 running backs. OH, AR please save our ....errr my, sorry ass. Signed FB.

You'd be better severed without the immature name calling. You would be surprised how you can still make a point.

Good article but Mr. Peterson if that little bio at the end is something you are keeping for later articles, you breathe everything Packers not breath it.

Little details like this used to bother me, but now I’m just happy if the writer of a given article has something unique and insightful to say, and at least uses words and expressions with their correct meaning, which is all too often not the case. What can I say, lower your expectations and you’ll rarely be disappointed.

"The Bears still suck!"

Wonder if that quote will still be up Sept 10th? Seriously doubt it.

LoL. Now why do you think that? #12 and the OC van scheme against the best of them. The Bear’s secondary is shakey, they don’t really have the OL or skill players on O to be consistently productive, and I will kindly say that the jury is still out on Trubisky. The Bear’s have cuffed themselves for the next 3-4 years and there will be no “help on the way”. They paid an outrageous amount for a fantastic player but as everyone, he’s one injury away from it all going sideways. We shall see

We are too thin at offensive line not to keep a full back. GOOD GRIEF it is going to be Long season.

The Packers may have kept a good, effective fullback but they didn't have one.

MM spoke about thinking about the roster in terms of 63. Multiple guys going to the practice squad could and will contribute to this team this year. Donnerson, Thomas, Looney, Pankey and yes, Biegel could all find their way back sooner or later. Its a game of who can be exposed to waivers and who cannot.

A couple cuts--guys like Jeff Holland from Denver--could help OLB depth over guys like Fackrell.

There are a few candidates for OLB help. Which ones have potential is really a question that requires knowing what Pettine wants to do from the position. Would think some influx is likely.

Very true. I will be very interested to see how it's handled.

I'm OK with the current 53 except for Fackrell. I would have chucked him with Beigel. My guess is that we will see some of our guys come back on the PS and we may see a few more changes/additions by picking up players released from other teams.

I would have released Boyle and resigned him onto the PS. I'm not sure why he is on the 53. 8 WRs is a little weird for me as well but I expect some movement there before all is said and done. I didn't expect 4 TEs but it looks like the Packers will be using TEs for aditional blocking help in the run game. Finally no FB.

Looks like Gute is looking to not only pick the best players but also add speed to as many positions as possible. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

I think Pankey was a victim of the receiver, QB, TE decisions. I predict he’ll be claimed. That’s the one they may come to regret.

Update: Pankey not claimed. So, Gute cut the right players, ie those no other teams wanted.

The numbers at OLB appears consistent with Pettines remarks. OLB is not going to be as important in his schemes as it was in Capers.

Pettiine’s history shows he prefers solid defensive back play combined with defensive line pressure. That seems to be what he’s got.

THANK GAWD!! I’d rather see bigger edge rushers (DEs) than that crazy carnival clown show Capers had going on in later yrs. Or at minimum more of a base 3-4 than that silly 2-4-5 non-pressure stuff. I mentioned in other posts that I hoped Pettine has some tricks up his sleeve. If we have sideline to sideline ILBs...we could get away with what other teams get away with...a 4 man rush that gets home. Burks showed some good things in preseason. I was a little surprised at letting Ahmad Thomas go. He seemed to have coverage ability and he looked like a good tackler.

Thomas signed onto the Colts P.S. interesting that we got Morrison from them. They cut Pipkins and then signed Thomas. Sort of like trading Morrison for Thomas in a way.

Surprised Marwin Evans was cut in favor of Raven Greene. Thought Evans was pretty good on teams and did okay on the few defensive snaps he'd gotten.

Maybe AR is now in on the decision making, hence 8 WR's and 4 TE's.

If so, you'd think he would want some better backups for the OL.
