Key Battles for Packers vs. Colts
Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts rally their forces for an invasion of Lambeau. Can General Rodgers overcome their advance? Find out how within!

Following the Green Bay Packers has been like trying to balance on a see-saw on a boat in roiling seas. They’ve had to cope with the quick implosion of the backfield (though James Starks is on the mend), some shaky work by the quarterback and some inconsistency from their receivers. The defense, which carried a lot of the weight in 2015, isn’t quite as good this year and hasn’t been able to overcome the offensive issues as easily as they did before.
Which is why the Packers are sitting in second place in the NFC North, with a 4-3 record.
They have an excellent chance to get back in the win column this week as the Indianapolis Colts come to Lambeau Field. The Colts have a great quarterback in Andrew Luck, a tremendous receiver in TY Hilton (who looks like he will play despite a hamstring issue) and a solid, if aging, running back in the person of Frank Gore.
That’s pretty much it. The defense is terrible, the offensive line is a wreck and the depth all across the team is close to a joke.
Of course, that doesn’t make this a cakewalk, because Andrew Luck usually finds a way to pull the team’s fat out of the fire and at least make it close.
Which means the key to beating the Colts is really simple—beat the heck out of Luck.
The Packers only have 19 sacks so far, which puts them just above the median for the NFL, at 11. Good news though, because the Colts have allowed more sacks than any other team in the NFL. Yup, the guy whom owner Jim Irsay signed to a six-year, $140 million contract has the absolute worst protection in the league.
Nice job, Jim.
On the plus side, they haven’t allowed the most quarterback hits—that’s the Cleveland Browns with 67. The Colts fall short of that lead with just 61.
Somehow Andrew Luck is both still alive and able to throw for the tenth most yards this year and is tied for the fifth most touchdowns.
Seriously, that’s ridiculous.
So the Packers really have two jobs. First, hammer Luck. Get after him on every down and never let him get a clean throw.
Secondly, and this is the big one, they have to lock down his receivers. Because as we just mentioned, Luck has found ways in too many games to put up a lot of yards—and plenty of touchdowns—despite getting killed behind the traffic cones he has blocking for him.
Last week the Packers allowed the Falcons to score on six of eight drives. They got pressure, especially from Mike Daniels, and some of the corners did a fine job, like Ladarius Gunter. The other side of things, where Demetri Goodson lurked, didn’t fare so well.
You have to wonder if the Colts will try to match Hilton up on Goodson a lot on Sunday, especially given the success Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan had targeting him.
The secondary has to keep a lid on the receivers here, and guys like Goodson have to step their game up. We know that, even with pressure, Luck can throw the ball.
So it’s up to the secondary to make sure that when he does, it doesn’t reach his intended target.
If they can contain the receivers, the Packers should win this game.
Then we get another meme like this:

There is no valid reason for the Packers to lose this game. Let's get back on track in the win column ,go pack!

For many here, validity is manufactured with ease via denial.

I wonder what this defense will look like when it's mostly healthy...

Completely agree...
The defense will be better once they get their CB's back for sure.
The offense will be better once it gets Montgomery, Cobb, and Cook all back. Sounds like Montgomery and Cobb will likely be back this week. Cook maybe next week?
Sometimes when you have injuries it forces younger players to have to step up and play. Also forces coaches to do different things.
Trevor Davis and Allison both really stepped up and did good things against Atlanta. They both can be counted on in the future. Gunter has really played well (except for Dallas)
The offense actually has really heated up the last couple of weeks since the loss of Lacy and Starks. They found a real weapon in Mongtomery out of the backfield. The 4 and 5 WR sets really have our offense clicking.
McCarthy has gotten creative with his game planning and play calling. I think this maybe the most important thing that has happened since all the injuries. The offense isn't predictable. He has been forced to get creative with how the offense is ran. Definitely a good thing.

I agree this team will look formidable when Rollins, Randall, CM3, Lacy, Starks, Linsley, Monty, Cobb, and to my mind most important, Cook, return. Some of the young players have gotten invaluable experience during the interim, and probably can really contribute when the vets return and the youngsters can be used in more limited roles.

My concern is Goodsen on Hilton or Moncrief. Wasn't it last week when throwing at Goodson Ryan had a passer rating over 150? When you consider 158.3 is perfect it's hard to get put a positive twist on Mr. Goodson. I understand he may not even play in which case it would be whatever CB not named Gunter is on Moncrief or Hilton.
In games this year Hilton has over 100 yards the Colts are undefeated. In games Hilton is held under 100 yards the Colts are winless. Seems pretty simple to me what the Packers do. As Andrew pointed out, the Colts have a putrid O-Line. I also understand Matthews is going to play. Matthews, Daniels, jones, Peppers, and Perry should all be meeting each other at the QB. Seems like the perfect game for Perry to "Pad his Stats", much to Tarynfor12 chagrin.

I could be wrong but I heard Ryan had a perfect passing rating when throwing at Goodson. 158.3.
Definitely going to be the matchup to watch. The CB's vs WR's... Which makes its more important that they find a pass rush.

Nick,
Goodson is under concussion protocol and may not even play! Hopefully, Rollins can go and Clay sounds like he thinks he can go.

I saw that too Spock, thanks. Let's hope Matthews does play, Rollins too.

This is a bad Colts team. They have the 31st ranked pass defense and a struggling offensive line. Expect Luck to chuck it a lot to Hilton, Moncrief and TE Jack Doyle. Frank Gores seems ageless, but we must win the battle in the trenches. Packers 31, Colts, 24

Goodson? He is not cleared yet from concussion! So, you are sure he will play?

Goodson probably out. Luck goes bananas targeting Rollins, Hyde, or Hawkins when Dom rushes 3 or 4 with a lead. I just hope one of the guys rushing is Clay. Pack hang on after late surge 31-27. Take the 7 points.
