Hello Wisconsin: It All Comes Down to Bears Week

Packers. Bears. Week 18. Playoffs on the line. Let's do this.

Win and you’re in.

That’s the situation this week for the Green Bay Packers. It’s a strikingly situation to what they had entering week 18 last year:

-8-8 record

-Win and in scenario

-At home

-Surging divisional opponent who would love nothing more than to knock the team out

This year, however, the vibes of the team are completely different. Whereas last year’s Packers felt like they were forcing out their last dying breaths, this year’s Packers are building to something bigger.

That “something” may not (probably will not) arrive this season, but it is clear that this is a team on the rise. Last year’s team felt tired, broken down, and stale, long before the final week of the season.

The youth of the Packers this season has been a double-edged sword; there were some rough patches on offense that could be attributed to an inexperienced starter at quarterback and an offense packed full of players in their first or second years at wide receiver and tight end. That’s not to mention all of the injuries to key veterans and young playmakers.

The defense has been generally putrid with a few exceptions here and there, and Joe Barry will likely (should) be gone this offseason, which will HOPEFULLY remedy that side of things.

But there’s a lot to be excited about on the offensive side of the ball, and Jordan Love keeps getting better.

It’s only fitting that it comes down to the Chicago Bears in the final week of the season.

The NFL’s oldest rivalry has been extremely one-sided for the entire last three decades, and especially so over the last 15 years. But for whatever reason, Bears fans have gotten extra spicy online lately, and despite a smackdown earlier this year and years’ worth of abuse, they seem convinced that their team is about to end the Packers’ season this weekend.

It is certainly true that the Bears have been playing better football of late. But the Packers have seen such growth over the season, and it’s quite interesting and unique to have the same team bookend the regular season.

A season sweep of the Bears in Jordan Love’s first year starting could someday be looked back at as an early step in the creation of a lasting legacy. That, combined with Love’s statistical dominance in the second half of the season (he’s been a top five player at the position over that time), should have Bears, Lions, and Vikings fans scared stiff for what’s to come, because he’s only going to get better.

Packers vs. Bears. Late afternoon game, with the sun setting midway through. Lambeau field in January. Win or go home.

What more could you ask for in the final week of the season with a team that many held to such low expectations at the start of the year?

Wisconsin Beer of the Week

Upon my latest trip to Woodman’s liquor store to update my beer stash, I knew I wanted to try out some new beers from some new breweries. I tend to flock toward the same Milwaukee-area breweries over and over, but there’s great stuff getting made all over Wisconsin, so I wanted to cast a bit of a broader net.

Today’s featured beer comes from Whole Hog Brewery in Stevens Point. It’s Oatmeal Cream Pie, an imperial oatmeal stout that tastes just like the Oatmeal Cream Pie treat you’ll find in your local grocery store.

It contains the thick, rich maltiness of an oatmeal stout combined with a vanilla taste that balances it out quite well. Here’s how the brewery describes it:

“Like great desserts, Whole Hog Oatmeal Cream Pie is all about the finest ingredients and caring about each step. It starts and stops with a molasses-rich oatmeal stout – Chocolate, Victory, and Maris Otter malts, roasted barley, and oat flakes – sandwiched around the delightful flavor of thick creme filling and cookie spice.”

Really delicious, and from a brewery I was unfamiliar with. Glad I gave it a shot. It comes in at a relatively moderate (for an imperial stout) 8% ABV, so it doesn’t pack TOO heavy of a punch.

Definitely a recommended beverage from me.

Truly a unique opportunity

As I mentioned last week in my Joe Barry rant, the Packers have a truly unique opportunity ahead of them. No one really expected this team to get to the playoffs in Jordan Love’s first year starting. It was broadly accepted that it would take the Packers at least another year to really set themselves up for a postseason berth, and maybe another year after that for postseason success.

But here they are, with a chance to “steal” a playoff berth (in a fashion) and shift that timeline forward a year.

Almost no one will expect the Packers to win a playoff game if they do indeed make it there. Their most likely opponent is the Dallas Cowboys, who would be heavily favored at home over the youthful and defense-challenged Packers.

The Packers would be playing with house money. There would be no heat if they were to flame out in the playoffs; it’s what’s generally expected of them. That would allow them to play with a sort of looseness that teams with expectations do not have the luxury of experiencing. We as Packer fans should know this; we spent most of the last decade watching the Packers fail to live up to high expectations.

I hope Matt LaFleur really hammers home this message, even as early as this weekend. No one expected the Packers to be where they are. Their playoffs started in Minnesota, and continue now. Every week they win is a week in which they exceed expectations moving forward.

The Packers need Aaron Jones back in 2024

Yes, Aaron Jones is due a large amount of money in 2024.

Yes, he's pushing 30 as a running back in the NFL.

Yes, he spent much of the season injured.

But the results on the field are irrefutable. When Aaron Jones is on the field, the Packers' offense is significantly better. He is the engine that makes this whole thing go, and opens up so many opportunities for other players on the offense.

When Jones is playing, Jordan Love has more weapons and more space in the passing game. When Jones is playing, AJ Dillon can be an effective change-up back rather than having to shoulder the load. When Jones is playing, his explosiveness opens up big gains in the run game that simply don't happen with other players taking the handoffs.

If the Packers do indeed wish to bring back Aaron Jones, they will likely need to extend him this offseason to make the cap figure work this coming year. Even just a two-year extension would help the cap number, and it wouldn't be tying themselves to a running back of his age for too long.

The thing about Jones is he simply doesn't have the wear and tear of other backs his age. He's spent much of his career being underutilized (for better or for worse), so he doesn't have the same number of collisions on his body that other players do.

If we continue to see Aaron Jones perform as he has the last couple weeks for the remainder of the season (whether it's one week or longer), the Packers are going to have to give a serious look at figuring out how they can bring him back.

Around the NFC North

As always, it’s time to go around the NFC North.

  • The CHICAGO BEARS have had one of the best defenses in football over the last couple months, which has gotten them back to close to a .500 record. Unsurprisingly, this has the QB WINZ argument raging in Chicago. Do the Bears run it back with Justin FIelds, who has still been middling during this recent run of relative success, or do they use their top draft pick to take the extremely hyped Caleb Williams (a known Packer fan)? It certainly appears Matt Eberflus will be back as head coach after most Bears fans wanted his scalp a few months ago, so that would seem to make it more likely that Fields will be back as well. Of course, the Bears aren’t exactly known for sensible football decisions.

  • The DETROIT LIONS got to be the latest team to complain about referee Brad Allen and his crew after their Saturday Night Football debacle in Dallas. I don’t think we’ll ever know what actually happened with the whole “didn’t report as eligible” controversy, but we DO know it never should have gotten there to begin with; the referees mis-called a key tripping penalty in the Cowboys’ previous drive, saying it was on Dallas and not Detroit. Ultimately, referees are inherently garbage, but the Lions were fortunate to even be in the situation they were in at the end of that game.

  • The MINNESOTA VIKINGS have seen the true value of Kirk Cousins these last few weeks, which makes me wonder if they might try to bring him back on like a two-year deal while they also search for their heir apparent. They certainly can’t trot out Jaren Hall, Nick Mullens, and Josh Dobbs again next year and expect to be anywhere near a contender. They’ve got too many talented pieces to let this team flounder without a quarterback, so why let Cousins get away and get nothing in return?

Bets and receipts for Bears week

This is going to be a big “I told you so” weekend for me if the Packers complete the season sweep of the Chicago Bears, for several reasons:

-I predicted on Twitter this offseason that the Packers would go 9-8

-I bet a Bears fan friend $50 that the Packers would sweep the Bears.

-Bears fans spent the entire offseason AND regular season talking about Jordan Love being trash, or the Packers missing the playoffs, or the Bears being the better team.

I’m fully prepared to start busting out all of my receipts (isn’t that what they make Twitter bookmarks for?). There will be no mercy. All of the trash that was talked this offseason will come to light if the Packers take down the Bears yet again.

The Bears have beaten the Packers exactly three times in the last 13 years. It’s been a historic level of dominance in this rivalry, and given the trajectory of Jordan Love’s young career, it doesn’t look like that dominance is going away any time soon.

THIS or THAT in Mr. Backes’s room: Week 18 Update

As I’ve done the last several weeks, I’m going to give a quick update as to the latest THIS or THAT polls in my classroom. Of course, there is only one day to report so far, because we were off until Wednesday.

Without further ado:

  • New Year’s Party defeated sleep

If you have additional THIS or THAT prompts you’d like to poll my high schoolers with, give your ideas in the comments! I’ve pulled a few from the comments so far.

Predictions for Packers vs. Bears and Week 18

Look, both of these teams are way different than they were in week one. You can toss that matchup out the window. The Bears have been playing great defense and are swarming to the football, causing a lot of turnovers. This matchup is likely to look a lot different.

But ultimately, it’s the Bears. There’s nothing they’re better at than losing to the Packers. And the big edge here comes at quarterback, where Jordan Love has already easily surpassed Justin Fields as an NFL-caliber player. With the Packers playing at home in a must-win scenario in front of a nearly national audience, the vibes are much better this time around, and they’ll get the win they need to make it to the postseason.

The Bears...Can you IMAGINE the level of despair Bears fans will feel if the Packers go out and pound the Bears much like they did in week one or last weekend against the Vikings? I moved to Los Angeles 37 years ago so I don't really know any Bears fans anymore.

My fun is going to a Bears website and giving them HELL. Well, at least until they kick me off like they did on Windy City Gridiron. But when the Packers pound the Bears on Sunday I will go to as many Bears sites as I can and post my feelings about the Chicago Bears... The Bears Still SUCK!!!

When I lived in Florida I would go to a sports bar to watch the Packers games and I sat with a Packers fan and his son-in-law who was a Bears fan. It was always a good time. He was a good Bears fan. I have always had respect for Bears fans because of the rivalry and the history.

Thanks for the AFC North break down
Lots of Packer enthusiasm after the big win in Minnesota and there should be
Lets remember they played against a team Vikings with a very bad rookie quarterback
The Bears game will come down to Packers OL blocking ( if they pressure Love there could be problems )
And tackling Justin Field when he runs in the open field

This will not be like the opener....

I fundamentally agree, but the Packers have done a nice job of making bad QBs winners of the "offensive player of the week" award.

This game isn’t all about Love because it’s a team game with 35+ players contributing and if the Defense doesn’t do its job it might not matter what Love does. It is a game that we will find out to some extent what we really have in Love. How does he handle playoff pressure. He certainly showed last week that he was up to the task. I’m looking forward to Love having another great game! Com on defense show us that you can stop the bears because they still Suck!

This game will be completely different than against the Vikings, but one thing that needs to be the same is all 11 players on our offense need to play really well.

Myers at C has a version of "playing well" that's a lot like Barry ball: he doesn't even try to stop his 1 on 1 matchups, much less think he's going to move him off the ball. He initiates contact while already moving backwards, and just tries to slow the defender down. When JL can avoid the pressure and complete a pass, it is by definition "good enough." More importantly, JL is not injured. I mean, obviously not injured based on how well he's playing. I'm sure he must be bruised and dinged, but especially this season with QBs going down like flies it's amazing he's even still standing.

In TC I hope Myers, Tom, and the rookie drafted to play C all compete for the position, and the best man wins instead of favoritism.

Lets re-phrase some things. -

Packers win, Barrys' In.
Packers Lose. Barry's out.

Love gets paid regardless.

Put a stop to recurring injuries.

WE need the Tes!
Jordan Love needs Tes!

Expect a dirty game.

JB's lack of consistency is the only reason GB won even 1 game. Had he been consistent GB would be 0-16.

How many of the 8 losses would have been wins had JB kept his promise to play aggressively? Gutey has drafted defensive players who excel when they play aggressively, with #7 being a great example of that. And 25. And 23.

The only way I see Barry returning is if we win the super bowl. Literally the only way I see him back.

In the last games post game press conference, LaFleur made the comment about needing to give Barry and the defensive staff a lot of credit. He acknowledged that they have been getting a lot of grief lately, so he was happy for them to have a game like this. Then he made the comment that "though this was just one game". Maybe I interpreted it differently, but that to me said yeah they had 1 good game, but it doesn't make up for the previous 3 games and the rest.

After 3 DCs.
The best definition is STs.
Everyone thought the coach made the difference.
But it's actually the players that do.

So with that thinking.--

Again, I have no idea who will win this coming weekend in the game between the Packers and Bears. Allegedly, both teams are very different from what they were in the beginning of the season when they first met.

Love and the offense has definitely improved. The defense is still up for grabs.

LaFleur's play-calling last weekend seemed especially good, as if he's starting to get a really good feel for what his offense is capable of handling.

And Aaron Jones is still the man when he's able to play.

Unlike most here, I believed (LH also) that we could very easily make the playoffs being in the NFC North.

I was wrong in that I thought it would be because of the O-line and running game and hopefully an experienced/improved D. I was wrong and thought the Lions would be the Lions thus it would be easier to get in by winning the division than a wild card spot because of the competition in the other divisions (Dalas, Eagle, Giants, 49ers, Seahawks, Rams).

I don't want to be wrong about us getting into the playoffs especially with it being against the Bears. I am glad that this will be a real test to the team and if they win it will be a well-earned learning experience.

Unlike Tim, I never bet on the Packers. It would then be my fault if they lose. I have enough game day rituals I have to perform in order for it not be my fault if they lose.

"I was wrong in that I thought it would be because of the O-line and running game and hopefully an experienced/improved D. "

If the Packers come out with an aggressive game plan and play on a physical level like they did against MN, DET, and KC, then they should win going away...but does anyone really trust Barry to come out with that kind of plan? I'm afraid we'll see soft zones and passive rush plans.

"Unlike Tim, I never bet on the Packers."

I got to see my nephew and his college-aged friends over the holidays and they burn so much cash on these online betting sites that it's crazy. We'd sit to watch a game, and all they wanted to talk about were the parlays here and there. They had so much cash laid out it was unreal.

I understand that the gov't really had no choice but to legalize (and tax) all this stuff--they couldn't control it and they don't like being left out of the cash loop--but it's now broadly available to populations that lack the funds and haven't learned the self-control to deal with it.

We all had our fads and our cash sinks at that age, but I really worry about the habits being developed in these kids...it just feels predatory.

"This year, however, the vibes of the team are completely different. Whereas last year’s Packers felt like they were forcing out their last dying breaths, this year’s Packers are building to something bigger"

The vibe is different in that Detroit team last year was far more physical than the Packers on both sides of the ball and, frankly, was the better team. This is a Bears team that wins solely on its defense staking the offense to good field position either by getting off the field on third down or generating TOs. The offense is limited by what Fields can manage--if the Bears stick with him, they're making a lousy choice. If the Packers, who have been terrible at forcing TOs, can take care of the football, keep Love clean, pressure Fields, and win the TO battle, they win.

That said, the Packers had 21 (21!!!) players on their injury report (only 5 DNPs, though) and are 3-2 in the division so far this season. They have lost both their home division games at Lambeau and won all three of their road division games. Something's gotta give.

"AJones" -- I agree on virtually all your points. He's still a dynamic runner and he makes the offense go...MM's and LaF's lack of commitment to him has kept him fairly fresh over the years and I think he's got another year in the tank. That said, I don't think they extend him. I'll point to a Tom Silverstein article from a couple weeks ago that says the Packers AND Jones do better if they mutually agree to a pay-cut for 2024 that lowers his cash value to about what he'd get on the open market. His savings against the cap on a cut or trade pre-Jun 1 is about $5M. They could match that on a pay cut and not create a glaring roster hole that they'll have to scramble to fill for 2024...they could draft a later round developmental RB and ease him in or continue to groom Emanuel Wilson.

Silverstein also points out that Preston Smith is in a similar situation, where a cut or trade doesn't give the Packers very much cap relief (pre-Jun 1). He's very quietly having a really good year and is a quality locker room guy. Like Jones, he likes being in GB. There's some wrangling they can do with his cash value and roster bonus that would bring him back and save money against the cap.

"Around the NFCN"

With three division teams looking like they're ascending, is there a team that looks more cooked than the Vikings? I think O'Connell legitimately believed that ANY QB could have a field day against the Packers' D...oops. That said, I don't think it was as much on Hall as it was on their OL's inability to win the LOS. Every time they cut away to the look on O'Connell's face, he looked beat. They have plenty of pieces on offense, but they're still paying for their inability to build an OL and OL depth over the years. When Flores leaves, will that defense still be able to float the team or will they regress to what they were in 2022 (which is a sieve)?

Whatever the Lions say, there are a couple issues--one: after a dominant, momentum building drive and a penalty that pushed them back, they should've kicked the effing point and gone to OT. Two: on the trip penalty, yes, they were lucky to be there. Three: mostly, they screwed up by trying to be cute. I don't agree with Jerry Jones very often, but the defense DOES have a right to know who's eligible. Collinsworth kept pointing out that Decker was uncovered on the end of the line, which should've been a clue, but the Lions got too damn cute, and apparently the refs announced 70 as the tackle eligible. They did it to their effin' selves. Living in Lions country, nobody here wants to hear that.

I come back to the Bears, who I think need to cut bait on Fields and draft a QB. They know what he is: a scatter-armed, and mistake-prone RB playing QB who gives away more games than he wins. He's no Jalen Hurts--but then, he doesn't have the supporting cast of Hurts.. If they decide to pony up the cash he'll need, and that's the big consideration with Fields--just how much can you financially commit to the guy?--and try to prop him up, can they get to the promised land? I don't think so. Deal Fields, acquire more draft capital, draft a young QB, and try to win in that 5-year window.

P Smith has consistently played GREAT all season! He doesn't have a lot of stats, but a huge portion of the impressive stats would never have happened without his contribution on those plays.

Yes, the Packers have paid Smith 61 million over 5 years, or roughly a 12 million average,

For that they got 8 sacks a year, and 6 forced fumbles over the span of 5 seasons (1.2 average forced fumbles a season, and a guy who can't play coverage to save his life.

Gute STOLE him!!
Clearly outsmarting the other GM's in the NFL.

You think that Preston only made 7 million?

That's cute in a way, but hardly anything intelligent enough to start a conversation.

Thanks for playing though.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't Oren Burks beat out 96 million dollar man Rashan Gary in PB votes?

I'd love to see the RB position filled next year without needing to go to the draft. Some combination of 33, 28, 31, and maybe Gutey can even get Goodson and / or Nichols back. They have a cap specialist on staff to help wrangle this stuff, but I don't want them mortgaging the future. This is the time to pay for past sins, not add more void years.

Congrats on the 9-8 season and the 'i told you so' twitter brag that they haven't achieved yet.
I'm sure a 9-8 prediction for the Packers was......rare?

I had a 'i told ya so' wager last week with teeth behind it, that is an 'i told you so'.

So this game is different than the Bears, for a few reasons.....
1) The Bears aren't giving up like the vikings did starting a 5th round rookie.
2) The Vikings lost 4 of 5 before they faced the Packers.
3) The Bears won 4 of their last 5 before facing the Packers.
4) I think beating and matching the Packer season, means something for the Bears, and their fan base.

Personally....i don't think the Bears have much of a chance, because they haven't beat anyone substantial, including the Lions...yea, i said it.
But, i wouldn't be shocked.....if the Packers, Bears, Vikings, all end the season tied at 8-9.

The Bears schedule is not unlike the Packers, mostly consisting of sub .500 teams.
Although i still believe the Packers had the easier schedule.

I wouldn't wager on the game because i'm not taking the Packers against a running QB.

But trust me when i say...i was damn tempted.

I see a Packers win, and then a potential 'get knocked into a 'back to reality game' should the Packers reach the playoffs.

Like i said many times, this season has already been a success when looking at the big picture.
Love exceeded my expectations of him....easily

I think you hit on a good point which is that the entire NFCN benefitted from playing a sub-par NFCS--where they'll be lucky to have anyone finish over .500--and AFCW (when was the last time the AFCW was viewed as sub-par?). Hell, the Chiefs were only 2-2 against the NFCN. For standings-based NFC opponents, the Packers drew the Rams (W) and Giants (L...ugh!), while the Bears drew Washington (W) and Arizona (W).

Soft schedules all around.

Looks like it hurt us more than helped us because we whimped out against all the weak teams. Did a young team and coaching take them for granted?

"Bets and receipts for Bears week"

I heard the most shit talk coming from Bears fans this offseason. And yet again, this week I have heard more crap talk from Bears fans then any other game this year. We have heard about it all.

This game is more then just the Packers getting to the playoffs. This is also to shut up those annoying Bear fans all offseason. Though to be fair, it still won't shut them up.

"The Packers need Aaron Jones back in 2024"
Jones needs to be back. He is far from being done. Yes he is older, yes he costs money. But the difference he makes not only on the field, but in the locker room, on the sidelines and after games stopping fights from happening, he is a tremendous person to have in the locker room.
On the field when Jones is on the field, the offense is just different. A 0-1 yard run is a 7-10 yard run for Jones. I get he is older, but that just means they need to figure out a better backup plan. Wilson maybe one of the guys. Dillon maybe one of the guys. But they need a big time improvement from Patrick Taylor.

Is that song, written by Jerry Downs (pseudonym name, actual name Al Hoffman), a fight song or a process song?

You know, bare down...then bear down.

Was Jerry Downs "sitting down" when he wrote that song in 1941 after the Bears beat the Redskins 73-0 to win the NFL Championship? I expect Jerry wrote it after a long night of celebration.

In honor of Jerry Downs...Pack 73-0.

This is a 50/50 game because we just don't know who will show up. If our defense from Carolina shows up and we sit back on Fields, this will be anyones game. If our O-line reverts to missed assignments and poor run blocking, the offense will sputter. On the other hand, if Rashan Gary makes an appearance and we get good interior D-line play then life gets difficult for Fields. This is my key to the game. I would like to see 3 down linemen with 2 OLB as the base for this game. Make Fields win this win his arm and ball protection.

With Aaron Jones, the offense will be okay. We do need to start fast and force the issue. If the Bears have to play catch-up, we will see the ghost of Jay Cutler return.

Either way, this season has been great. Both the team and the coaches have shown me something, something to build on. Just don't lose to the Bears at home or the Cowboys at Jerry World and all will be right in the universe.

I still remember the Halas-Lombardi confrontations. Curly Lambeau had had his share with Halas as well.
I was one of the few fans who stayed watching the TV to the end of the game in 1980 when the Bears creamed Green Bay 61-7. They ran the score up on a hapless Packers team. I still remember Refrigerator Perry plowing into the end zone thanks to everyone's 'favorite' Bear Mike Ditka.
Favre playing one of his best games in Chicago on Halloween night. His Darkness proclaiming with a great amount of truth: "I own you".

Lots of memories. More coming Sunday.

Will the Packers win? Does a bear shat the mattress? Come on Pack, Sealy the deal!

I have always respected da BEARs and growing up loved watching Walter and film of Gale...both ran so smoothly, and effectively. It is okay to respect your opponent, just don't fear them and be prepared.

I’m definitely for bringing back Jones—everything looks better when he’s playing.
This game makes me nervous only because of our defense. But, I do believe the Bears will have to score 25 to beat us, and I don’t expect they can do that.

All season I have not given up on #33, 28, 10, or 80. I have expected the cap would prevent the return of both 33 & 28, but maybe they can do it? They're both better when they're on the field at the same time. What a nightmare for any opposing defense! Especially when JL has 3 other weapons he can also throw to. Would love to see them be #88, 85 and 80 this week ...

Win the toss and take the ball again, MLF...please.

The formula for this game needs to be similar to last week...long, clock chewing, scoring drives.

Double benefit of keeping the D fresh and limiting Barry's play calls.

Pass to open the run game. Establish the Air Force, then pound them with the infantry. After that, the playbook is open for MLF, Love and the O.

With 177 yards on the ground vs the Ugly Purple, the Bears will be expecting AJ and AJD. IOC to make them think so with 12 or 21 personnel...then pass for first downs.

Illusion of Complexity on offense.

On D, pressure Fields with more than 4, por favor! Packers have the talent to do this early and often.

STs...please be competent.

So last game they did and went 3 and out so it did no good.

Defer always because that allows you to rest your defense longer at half time and it gives you the same or more possessions in the second half.

Always put your best unit on the field to start the game if you win the toss. Take the ball to create momentum. Doesn't always work but the only way not to succeed is not to try.

I was happy MLF decided to start on O. There have been too many times where the D starts and the opponent drives the field an puts the Packers in a hole.

Even if the Pack doesn't start 3-0 or 7-0... will take 0-0 over being down 0-3 or 0-7 to start on O.

Cheezehead,

"Defer always because that allows you to rest your defense longer at half time"

There is no basis to claim this will always be the case.

Right now receiving first makes sense because JB has this D play so poorly unless they have a lead. If our O scores on that opening drive and is truly AGNFB, the whole game is entirely different.

I can't call that a game plan, it's hope; but if that's the best you've got and it works? A win is a win.

In Chicagoland everyone's getting on the Fields bandwagon after a few good games. Try to imagine how wild they would be if they had Jordan Love.

Here is Love's first year (so far) compared to the all time records of Bears QBs:

yards
Love 3,843
Bears best 3,838

TDs
Love 30
Bears best 29

First year starter compared the best they've had in nearly a 100 years.

THIS or THAT: pity the Bears fan or laugh.

At the start of the season who expected the Green Bay Packers to be playing their last regular season game with the opportunity of going to the playoffs? NOBODY expected that! Well "Mr. Nobody", it has happened. This young bunch is in a win and in situation and I simply can express how excited I am to watch that game. I just wish I could be in the stands of Lambeau Field. Let those Packers play their hearts out and leave nothing on the field.

A couple of things.

Yes, they should keep Jones next year and he will take a team friendly deal. I usually hate the team friendly phrase but in this case, knowing Jones, he will stay. They also need to draft his replacement in this year's draft.

Barry, my thought is that he is gone after this season. If not, then the following year Murphy is out, LeFleur sn out and then Barry is out. I do not understand how bad the defense was so bad against the Giants, Bucs and Carolina and then they turn around and play much better against MN. They all had terrible QB's so why the difference?

I hope against the Bears that we play well and everything else will take care of itself!

Hawk,
Re-posting what I said on the Coverage Map article:
As much as I hate to admit it, I'd love to see the Packers jump out to a big lead, and then fall on their heads to allow Da Bears back into the game.
Of course I want then to win, and I will be cheering my ass off for that, but cementing the ouster of Joe Barry is paramount to a successful 2024 season and beyond.

We took care of business by beating down Minnesota in front of their home fans. Now, we get the pleasure of beating the Bears on a cold January day and advancing to the playoffs.

What could possibly be better?

The Packer Formula:

1) Protect Love. He's one of the least pressured QBs in the league.
2) Protect the ball. The Packers don't turn it over very much, especially in the wins.
3) Throw the ball into the endzone.

That's our character on offense. One of the least pressured QBs in the league, protecting the ball and throwing TDs.

I have not, yet. The TMQ had a lengthy run as a football pundit and he swore that blitzing hurts a team more often than it helps it.....especially against the good QBs, like Manning and Brady, who simply unload the ball before the blitz reaches them. Rodgers, earlier in his career, was lethal against the blitz. It's a mark of being a top tier QB, IMO.

Yards returned against= 0
Number of punts returned=0
Injuries on punts is 0
Penalties on punts is 0
Turnovers on punts is 0

As an OC, I am not very tricky. I only know three runs, and my QBs were instructed that if the first guy wasn't open, pull the ball down and run. I also ran the option one year because we had guys hurt. Mostly a power I guy.

The team has been Jekyl & Hyde all year.  Pleasantly surprised to see them obliterate my 27-23 MIN guess last week, though I'm still none short of flabbergasted how inept MIN was on both sides of the ball...I consider that game an outlier in the GB / MIN pecking order. I had no idea how unprepared Jared Hall was in his debut last week, but history has proven the last couple years that the least deserving QBs Zach Wilson, Bailey Zappe, Tommy DeVito, Baker Mayfield are somehow deserving of weekly all-pro awards complimentary of our oft incompetent defense.

There are two men fighting for their jobs Sunday afternoon: Barry & Fields.  We have seen the Bears roster rally around Fields...in Green Bay we have a departed CB coach that bailed the sinking D ship last year and now we have (at least) a couple of malcontent vets in Campbell and Alexander who have appeared to have casted public / subliminal no confidence votes in Joe Barry.  Bottomline, no faith in our D, can our O set the pace?

I don't see JB fighting for his job. Over the course of his career, there is nothing he can do in one game that redeems him as even competent. MLF should have seen that last season, despite the four wins late in the season.

It's still possible he did see that, but was given orders to let JB play out his contract. Well, Monday it is UP if he loses, and if he wins it still ends with his next loss.

* Do they have TV's in the pokey? Do they take requests what channel to air? Just kidding.

** Pack is a winner either way. If they win...YES! If they lose, da Bears will keep Fields QB1, not draft a QB and not change the offensive scheme for Field's strengths.

Last year's last game was the game that I thought it was definitively time for AR to move on. I thought AR looked confused and a few of his throws were ducks, along with holding onto ball too long.

I thought the team would look better with Love at QB based on the eagles game last year. I think that Love and the offense will prove me right in this game and the offense will look better this year for bear game than the AR and the offense in the Det game last year. The offense could be missing Watson and Reed too.

What concerns me most is if the Bears offense has improved enough to cause some issues. I would start #35 and #37 given the success in last week's game along with Det and KC wins.
