Gut Reactions: Week 5
Aaron's gut reactions to the Week 5 loss to the Redskins.
By PackerAaron
- Jermichael Finley is most likely out for the season. UPDATE: Greg Bedard reports Finley will miss only one or two weeks. We'll see.
- Aaron Rodgers went to bat publicly for his receivers last week - they sure let him down today with all those drops.
- I've said all along that McCarthy is a pass-first coach and always will be. That said, he simply has to do a better job of realizing when his passing game is out of sync and leaning on the running game. Brandon Jackson had a good thing going and McCarthy just refused to acknowledge it.
- The defense did about as well as could be expected with so many guys out with injuries.
- That said - Dom Capers is KILLING me with the three man rushes on 3rd and long.
- Bryan Bulaga did a good, not great, job in his first NFL start.
- Woodson can bitch all he wants - he needs to stop grabbing guys.
- The Packers need to get healthy in the worst way.
- Mike McCarthy has a lot of work to do.

totally agree Aaron, The play calling needs some serious attention!!!
October 10, 2010 at 03:43 pm
What's your source on Finley?
October 10, 2010 at 03:44 pm
This.
October 10, 2010 at 03:43 pm
Can't wait till next year.
October 10, 2010 at 03:45 pm
I don't even think I will be able to enjoy my vacation for the next two weeks after watching this game...When I get back, the Packers NEED to be 5-2...COME THE FUCK ON MCCARTHY!! (I am a little drunk...)
October 10, 2010 at 03:45 pm
I am leading the charge to have Mike McCarthy FIRED....!!
PackerAaron
October 10, 2010 at 03:46 pm
(sigh) - Here we go again...
October 10, 2010 at 03:50 pm
He is a decent coach but he lacks the ability to keep on attacking....we should have one this game in the first half.
He played too soft in the second half again...!
PackerAaron
October 10, 2010 at 03:53 pm
Did you think that after they went 7-1 in the second half on 2009?
October 10, 2010 at 03:57 pm
The schedule only gets tougher compared to '09.. Getting Detroit, SF, Seattle, Arizona (not playing anybody) to end last season.
October 10, 2010 at 04:11 pm
No, I didn't. But, last year he was not being as tennative as he is this year. We should be playing ecery down as if we are behind. Especially with all the defensive injuries....
October 10, 2010 at 06:21 pm
I'm on board. Wake up, Aaron. McCarthy is an average coach. He's not bad, but he's not great either. That's exactly how his teams play - not bad, but not great. Anyone ever have flashbacks to when TT passed on Sean Payton to hire McCarthy?
October 10, 2010 at 09:08 pm
Did you notice the list of Redskin's losing coaches?
We are losing Pro Bowlers to injury and idiot fans want to fire the coach who helped make them. Granted...balance on O please next year.
October 10, 2010 at 03:48 pm
Can McCarthy do the work?
October 10, 2010 at 03:51 pm
Totally agree.
Also. Chad Clifton is done.
Time for Charles to move to Safety IMO.
October 10, 2010 at 05:59 pm
Clifton looked lousy yet again today, I agree completely.
I'm going to go ahead and say this out loud...
Put either Lang or Newhouse in at RT and move Bulaga in at LT for Clifton. Clifton is a major liability right now- He's played one game out of five at an acceptable level. He's been a liability in the run game for the last few years, and this year he is getting beat in pass protection routinely.
The time for respecting his experience and veteran status is over. The time to acknowledge he is not performing at an acceptable level any more is now. Get Bulaga over there now and fill in the gap at RT however you need to.
October 10, 2010 at 06:22 pm
Ding ding ding! Oppy gets the prize! "Put either Lang or Newhouse in at RT and move Bulaga in at LT for Clifton." YES!!
October 10, 2010 at 06:46 pm
totally AGREE !
BULAGA/LANG/WELLS/SITTON/NEWHOUSE -- let's see 'em!!!
Because we're going NOwhere, without a run game. And the lame-ass coaching staff can't evaluate players in training camp -- otherwise, Giacomini and Barbre would have never seen the field.
Meredith was a joke, but I saw Newhouse play in KC -- he whiffed (badly) on his first play, but the rest of the game he LOCKED-ON his opponent, and that was IT.
I'm ready. Why ? Because I've seen how Clifton and Tauscher have played this year. I appreciate their past contributions, but that won't carry us into the future. Might as well see what we've got...
October 10, 2010 at 08:21 pm
Sorry, who replaces Woodson at corner? Or are we going with three safeties?
October 10, 2010 at 03:53 pm
werent we all pissy like this after Tampa? The secondary will improve with Bigby and harris james starks should help the running game...if theres one thing that kills this offense it is the loss of finley but aaron rodgers will not let this season go to waste
October 10, 2010 at 04:08 pm
yes.. we are at a crossroads of the season again.. i dunno which direction the team is going to take this year.. and the question becomes
do we really wanna deal with this every season?
October 10, 2010 at 04:14 pm
theres an easy way to not deal with this get a true defiant veteran leader on this team someone who will light a fire under the teams butt...if getting a true leader means a coaching change than so be it but the team looks so lethargic
October 10, 2010 at 03:53 pm
we need to run the ball... NEED.. to run the ball.. need need need to run the ball...
rodgers wanted the ball in his hands.. makes crucial mistakes..
we control every game and lose because of a lack of running game and cant throw 46 times adn win..
WRs drop passes cause they get tired... hte more times u throw the more drops you will see.. dont give the WRs a break with a running game adn u will see drops and bad route running...
defense.. played great when the offense was controlling the game.. if the defense is on the field the whole 2nd half oviously they are going to start to fall apart with the limited number of players on the bench...
injuries may hurt us... clay matthews is a dagger... but we have so much talent on offense there is no excuse for not scoring.. we need to get jennings the ball adn see if he can do something.. whenever he gets open rodgers doesnt give him a look.. and when jennings is in tight coverage rodgers throws a bad pass... (that last pick.. u put that on the outside shoulder of jennings its a catch not a pick)
our defense played so well in teh first hald despite the injuries..
i get it. injuries can kill you.. but we dominated that game in every way but cant finish because we have penalties and no runninggame its just a crying shame... a crying shame
we should be undefeated right now.. but we shoot ourselves in the foot..
at this point i do not think we are a playoff team... is it early? yes... but it looks terrible for us right now..
we have no drive.. we have no leaders... if you looked at a post i made on this site earlier in the year before the season i stated this as well.. team covered in talent.. but we dont have a ray lewis.. we dont have THAT GUY.. rodgers does not seem to be that guy.. we need someone who comes up big in close games.. we dont seem to have anyone like that
im not saying its over for us... but at this point i dont really know what direction this team is going to go.. i dont know if MM is going to get his head out of his arse and start callin better plays i really just dont know whether they even care... they show no heart out there.. you dont see crunchin hits u dont see them fighting.. u see mental mistakes..
things dont look good in green bay.
injuries may be an excuse.. but we still need to find ways to win regardless
October 10, 2010 at 04:37 pm
right-the-fuck-on, Andrew !
what a colossal, epic fail by McCarthy
how many 3rd-and-shorts do you get?
to fuckup with a short-pass-incomplete?
RUN THE FUCKING BALL, GODDAMNIT
you fancy-ass gonna-snatch-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory motherfucker
October 10, 2010 at 05:11 pm
Run the ball? We have a terrible running game. If it wasn't for B-Jax 71 run the numbers would look horrible.
The passing game may have looked better if Clifton wasn't getting killed by Orakpo, especially in the second half.
I'm still not sure why it looked like Jones and Nelson seemed to be the top targets today. I don't think that fooled anyone. Of course there were the dropped balls as well.
Injuries are what they are and I don't see how much is going to be done about that unless you want to go back in time to the off season workouts and start all over again with a new trainers.
On a positive note, we made a lot of people in Minnesota happy today.
October 10, 2010 at 05:16 pm
You need to hand the ball off more than 10 times to your feature back for a running game. It's not that we don't have one, it's that we don't use it.
October 10, 2010 at 05:25 pm
If you are counting on the Packers running game to pull us out of trouble, boy are you backing the wrong horse.
October 10, 2010 at 05:43 pm
Wiscokid, do the math:
Bjax: 10 carries: 115 yds. Subtract the 71=44 yards over 9 carries. Y/A=5.88. What more do you want? Furthermore what does Jackson have to do to get more than 10 carries in a game?! The running game worked today, but this time MM didn't want to use it. I don't get it
October 10, 2010 at 05:52 pm
Very doubtful that he would sustain that average based on past performance. I would love to think Jackson is going to start contributing but I have no faith in him. Hey, let's hope that you're right.
October 10, 2010 at 06:26 pm
What does Jackson have to do to get more than 10 carries in a game? That' an easy one! Get a competent coach.
October 10, 2010 at 05:45 pm
if the defense is on the field the whole 2nd half oviously they are going to start to fall apart with the limited number of players on the bench…
----
Hey, McCarthy !
YOU IDIOT !
You KNEW this going in:
You HAD to protect your defense.
But you got carried away with your plastic-covered papers and your crayons.
WAY TO FUCK IT UP, DUDE.
GOOD JOB.
October 10, 2010 at 07:06 pm
cant tell if this is sarcasm or not... but the defense was on the field a lot more than it shoudl have been in the 2nd half... not really saying you need to protect them.. but if your offense goes 3 n out multiple times when your thin on defense your going to suffer
i undersand this is an obvious statement... but it reenforces the importance of a run game.. to give ur defense a breather
October 10, 2010 at 09:10 pm
Agreed. When Skins have six in the box...you better ass run on first and ten second and 7 . Footbal 101.
PackerAaron
October 10, 2010 at 03:54 pm
"WRs drop passes cause they get tired" - In the 2nd quarter? Absurd.
October 10, 2010 at 04:01 pm
i didnt say EVERY drop was because they were tired.. but football is a tiring sport.. players have to sit out for a few plays almost every drive on defense.. yet offensive players arent allowed to get tired?..
October 10, 2010 at 05:07 pm
I really sick of the shotgun spread on third and short. I don't even like it when it works, but I tolerate it. It's just so stupid. You run it on third and 2 and less and at a minimum you are likely to get some yardage and set up a 4th down try. Receiver drops it on third down and you are punt. At a minimum have Rodgers under center. You can always pass from under center, there aren't too many good running plays out of the shotgun (and even less from an empty backfield).
Jacksons plays good again today. Over last two games Jackson has had 19 carries for 148 yards rushing and 6 receptions for 26 yards. This is the number of touches a normal running back would have in one game.
And another thing, Jackson got only ten carries today and TWO of them were audibles. McCarthy called only 8 designed run plays to Jackson. I don't like harping on play calling but that is flat out ridiculous.
October 10, 2010 at 05:08 pm
I don't know why this posted in a random thread. Hmmm.
October 10, 2010 at 08:28 pm
Amen! 17 runs vs. 46 passes. Instead of a well played drive, they went into MM's favorite spread on every play. Rogers has still not shown he can put the game on his shoulders and take it to the defense. MM has failed miserably as a coach in a hostile environment.
It's time to step up and take responsibility.
October 10, 2010 at 03:55 pm
Rodgers has to get the job done in the 4th & OT.. All these big drives end of regulation or in overtime aren't ending in scores like they should. It will only get tougher for him without Finley, but they have the receivers to make up for his loss. It's on McCarthy to use them correctly.
October 10, 2010 at 04:42 pm
...and it can't be left in Crosby's hands(foot) -- he's an UNclutch as they come... jettison him and get ANYBODY else.
(Even on kicks that are good -- they come out side-winding all-over-the-place. His form/technique SUCKS -- lose him, before we lose more because of him)
October 10, 2010 at 06:08 pm
Have you watched Crosby kick this year?
Yeah, he missed a 52 yard attempt- a donger.
But his kicks this year certainly have not been "(coming) out side-winding all-over-the-place." He's been generally driving the ball straight through the uprights.
His form/technique looks just fine this year.
On a side note, I'll say this about that just-missed 52 yard attempt.. Did anyone notice how friggin HIGH ON THE GOAL POST that sucker hit?! That thing had enough leg to have made it from 70 yards out, crazy leg on that kick, and the wind flags were barely moving..
October 10, 2010 at 06:30 pm
Dude, have you had your eyes open at all this season? Crosby has been one of the only bright spots this season. Coming into today he had only missed one kick. He was a few inches from winning another one today. But yes, let's get rid of him.
October 10, 2010 at 06:45 pm
You think we lost because of Crosby?
October 10, 2010 at 07:03 pm
Oppy,
Irish Cheesedude,
T412,
Get real.
Every kick with him is an adventure.
I don't care if he can kick 100yds -- his accuracy is suspect.
and, yes, he puts an unusual English on the ball -- unlike other kickers. Look at his kicks -- they're NEVER consistent.
If you're honest, you'd admit you don't like the game on the line, with him kicking.
October 10, 2010 at 07:57 pm
My feeling is we shouldn't be in that situation period. This offense puts up 13 freaking points and the goat is Crosby.I thought we were so explosive, shit we shouldn't have a FG kicker on the freaking roster. We shouldn't need the xtra points either. But this gets thrown at Crosby.Let's be Honest.
October 10, 2010 at 08:59 pm
If you're honest, you'll admit that your just plastering your preconceived notions about Crosby, which you formed during last year's shaky-to-dismal performance, and conveniently applying it to this year, without any regard for what has actually transpired on the field. Crosby's FG kicks have not been the hook-right then wildly hook left kicks of last year. They have been, for the most part, straight from point of contact to completion.
Crosby narrowly missed a 53 yard FG today. I'm not willing to string him up for that. He's been kicking FG's well this year, it has not been a harrowing adventure.
Now, what's going on with kicking two kick-offs out of bounds- I'll agree that is unacceptable and an issue. But his FG kicking has been perfectly fine this year thus far.
October 10, 2010 at 09:03 pm
Wasting your time, Oppy.
October 10, 2010 at 10:33 pm
Are you serious? Who else? Who else we gonna get that has his power and is as accurate? EVERY KICKER MISSES. I'll take Mason any and EVERY day. Do I trust him? YES. Do I want to spend the next 10 years looking for a kicker, NO. Get off his ass. Again, every kicker misses. He's still better than most, and that's okay. 32 teams. We can't have the number one at every position. Get real.
October 11, 2010 at 12:55 pm
Tarynfor12, right on!!! With those offensive weapons, this game should never have been in doubt. Why are they having to kick 50+ yard FGs. The O stalls out late and can't adjust to the Defense's adjustments.
AR wanted the ball, said it was his signature game. Did not get it done.
October 10, 2010 at 04:08 pm
Aaron, do you have a source for the Jermichael injury prediction? Or is that just guessing based on his presence on the sideline with crutches. He did miss a big chunk of games last year with knee troubles. And the play when he went down didn't look bad.
The offense just has no rhythm. Everyone looks like they're pressing. It's the same whole "look for the big play" mentality with Rodgers. There were at least three third downs he could have converted with his legs where he kept looking downfield and threw incomplete. Argh.
PackerAaron
October 10, 2010 at 04:11 pm
Heard from two separate people - one who would know, one knows someone who would know.
October 10, 2010 at 04:13 pm
....BUT...BUT...Courtney Finley said...
Say it ain't so...I can't take any more injury news!
October 10, 2010 at 04:44 pm
he doesn't NEED a source.
All you had to do was watch -- it had the untouched, collapse look to it. There was no one around him -- usually those UNtouched injuries are the WORST.
October 10, 2010 at 04:30 pm
Who to blame for the ammount of injuries? Luck? Are we that unlucky since 08? Don't think so.
October 10, 2010 at 04:48 pm
Medical and training staff. The players are not properly checked and prepared. Some injuries are impossible to avoid. Many of the recent Packer injuries are due to poor medical and training practices.
Cannot win games if the players are nursing PREVENTABLE injuries.
With a better than average medical and training staff the Packers are in the SB.
Not going to happen with this staff.
October 10, 2010 at 05:12 pm
Most baseless comment in this thread, bar none
October 10, 2010 at 09:12 pm
ditto! Man o man..pathetic.
October 10, 2010 at 05:56 pm
Btw...same medical and training staff w them during the 90's n SB years
October 10, 2010 at 07:11 pm
i have no idea how legit this is... but the personnell will change over years... whether its the same organization or not is irrelevant.. same personnel probably isnt there.. what was once a competent organization could become incompetent... but i have no idea if its the training staff thats to blame..
we could not have enough contact in practice.. if u dont have good practice programs injuires will happen more often.. so it could be MM and his practice plan that is the problem..
October 10, 2010 at 07:18 pm
Grasping at straws. There is such a thing as 'bad fortune'. Same training staff, same medical staff that walked us through our almost injury free NFC championship game season. (Gee, same coaching staff too). There's been no change, it's called misfortune.
October 11, 2010 at 07:43 pm
"Who to blame for the ammount of injuries?"
I firmly believe 98.3% of the blame falls directly on Nagler.
October 10, 2010 at 04:58 pm
Nags,
You're right on with your commentary.
* Jermichael Finley is most likely out for the season. UPDATE: Greg Bedard reports Finley will miss only one or two weeks. We'll see.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>> something weird about the look (no one touched him/those are the WORST) -- would not be surprised to see him gone
* Aaron Rodgers went to bat publicly for his receivers last week - they sure let him down today with all those drops.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>> even so, you don't want your QB coaching your club -- great recipe for being out-of-balance
* I've said all along that McCarthy is a pass-first coach and always will be. That said, he simply has to do a better job of realizing when his passing game is out of sync and leaning on the running game. Brandon Jackson had a good thing going and McCarthy just refused to acknowledge it.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>> just pure, stupid, hard-headedness on McCarthy -- the kind that should get him FIRED. (c'mon ! how many times, how many damned times has this happened in the past???)
* The defense did about as well as could be expected with so many guys out with injuries.
* That said - Dom Capers is KILLING me with the three man rushes on 3rd and long.
>>>>>>>>>>> the true definition of INSANITY -- doing the same thing over-and-over-again, but expecting different results. THIS HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES PREVIOUSLY -- for the love of God, review your own tape, you jerk
* Bryan Bulaga did a good, not great, job in his first NFL start.
>>>>>>>>>> yeah, he had some "whiffs", for sure
* Woodson can bitch all he wants - he needs to stop grabbing guys.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> he shouldn't bitch, cuz he and his buddies mugged people all day long.
* The Packers need to get healthy in the worst way.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> WILL. NOT. MATTER.
* Mike McCarthy has a lot of work to do.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Prepare a resume, Careerbuilder, etc...
This is not an over-reaction on my part.
This was an offense against all things Packer, today -- pure and simple.
October 10, 2010 at 05:22 pm
hey, while I'm at it...
...Pat Lee SUCKS.
He's gone from a possible nickel back,
to dime back,
to covering gunners on punts (and FAILING)
Now the idiot is trying to run east-west on a kickoff, thinking he can give up ground in order to out-run coverage (this is the NFL you jerk -- you can't get away with that HS crap here).
He could not have been coached to do that -- so it must be stubbornness, or panic.
Just leave already.
October 10, 2010 at 05:33 pm
It's funny that you mention the "east - west" running style. I watched that happen and said to my wife "Lombardi would have had his head on a plate" for that. It's no wonder our special teams suck.
October 10, 2010 at 04:59 pm
Aaron,
You are straight and on point this week. There isn't much you can say this week. They held up admirably, but it was just too much.
Live to play another week.
Next weeks menu....deep fried 'Phins.
October 10, 2010 at 05:00 pm
Given all the injuries and with Washington being at home, what did you think of Packers going for it on 4th and 1 (in the first half) rather than kicking a field goal?
October 10, 2010 at 05:11 pm
Bulaga has never played right tackle in a game at any level. Considering that, I think he did a "very good" job.
McCarthy kills me more than capers. Incredibly predicable calls, never comes back to plays that were successful early, poor game management. Can we win a Super Bowl with McCarthy as coach? I'm having my doubts...
October 10, 2010 at 05:16 pm
Can't get into a rhythm when your receivers drop balls. Killed this team last year, doin it again. For all the complaints of the packers being too young It's the veterans killing this club......
October 10, 2010 at 05:21 pm
They said on CBS rodgers got a concussion on that last play. True?
October 10, 2010 at 06:37 pm
That's what Bill Michaels reported on Packers OAT on TMJ. They also said it come on a blow to the head that wasn't called. I think the refs hate Rodgers for some reason.
October 10, 2010 at 09:22 pm
Here's a report on Kevin Seifert's NFC North blog at ESPN.com:
http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/17680/aaron-rodgers-suffers-c...
Why does it seem like he takes a hit to the head every game or so without a flag?
October 11, 2010 at 02:38 am
I thought it was helmet to helmet when I was watching it but maybe I was imagining it as Buck and Aikman never mentioned it. Maybe I'm just paranoid.
October 10, 2010 at 05:26 pm
"I don’t even think I will be able to enjoy my vacation for the next two weeks after watching this game"
Enjoy it anyway.
4 quarters of shite, yet 2, count 'em, chances to drag it out in overtime.
October 10, 2010 at 05:31 pm
Don't get me started on the 3rd down defensive play calling! How many freakin' times have we watched opponents convert 3rd & long...over the last X years?!? The Packers must rank #32 in 3rd down & long defensive stats! I almost hurled my beer through the TV screen today! Doesn't matter what players the team has, or who the defensive coordinator is. It's one of the few true constants about the team, and I'm fed up with it!
Her, Capers - next time you have the opponent in 3rd & long, SEND THE HOUSE, DAMMIT!
October 10, 2010 at 06:01 pm
or rush three, and shadow the QB with a fourth.
how many times does the PREVENT(win) defense show up ?
October 10, 2010 at 07:13 pm
u dont send the house on 3rd and long.. you typically want to be conservative.. we did make a lot of stops.. as long as they punt after the 3rd and long who cares?.. i would prefer to see 1 or 2 more guys blitzing on 3rd and long.. but conservative is better in a 3rd in long.. not a prevent.. but conservative
October 11, 2010 at 12:58 am
Wasn't Cover-2 invented for this kind of situation? But it probably isn't in the Packs playbook because they are a 3-4 Defense ... *sigh*
October 10, 2010 at 05:42 pm
The receivers were a god damn joke today. Woodson's penalty was a god damn joke. Poppinga got hosed, not a penalty.
All in all, a bullshit game from a 9-7 team. There, I said it. They're as mediocre as it gets.
October 10, 2010 at 05:43 pm
3rd&1 & 3rd&2, we spread it out 5 wide, not one runningback or fullback in there. I'm not saying we HAVE to run it there, but don't let the other team tee off. WTF
October 10, 2010 at 05:58 pm
they can talk up their running backs all they want but it speaks to the total lack of trust they have in their running game. this team lacks toughness fer sure.
October 10, 2010 at 05:53 pm
No one deserved to win that game. The Skins looked like a train wreck. The Packers D did well holding them to 13 in regulation. Where is this elite passing game?
October 10, 2010 at 05:58 pm
You get no rhythm when your receivers can't catch. Drive killers. QB killers...
October 10, 2010 at 06:17 pm
We can bag on Clifton and dropped balls but we should give some credit to Orakpo for being a pretty damn good pass rusher. Fortunately, we don't have to see him every week. He was a good share of why our passing game didn't work today.
October 10, 2010 at 06:07 pm
im just disgusted we threw away a game in chicago, barely won at home against the lions, & now lost in washington. i dont know if its bone head play calling, injuries, no running game or maybe a combination of all 3. but this is gettin ridiculous we should be the class of the nfc north. lets get this shit together. we can avoid injuries, but we can mix up the play calling a bit. & kick the fckin field goal ! damnit what did we lose by ? a fckin field goal huh not scoring in the red zone comes back to haunt ya
October 10, 2010 at 06:11 pm
what about the QB sneak ?
can you say:
WEAK.
TEAT ?
c'mon, SAY IT.
cuz that's what is was.
good back-rub, Colledge...
October 10, 2010 at 06:13 pm
I didn't understand that whole series. Sitton and Bulaga are your best run-blocking tandem by far and they appear to run to the left and over center (sneak)? I say 'appear' because it's possible the back made a poor decision and cut.
But still, to the left?
October 10, 2010 at 06:19 pm
Let's try and look at the positives:
-Bishop looked very good.
-I think the D as a whole played very well.
-We had at least four or five opportunities to win. Just have to close it out better, remember this is a road game against a decent team. These are never gimmees.

Agreed on all accounts.

bishop played so well i was shocked.. definitly impressed me
October 10, 2010 at 06:23 pm
Defense did not lose this game.
Failure of offense to execute when it counts the most did.
Packers put up gaudy numbers in the first half and came away with 10 points. Ridiculous. IMO, McCarthy's play calling is suspect, if only for the fact when it is clear his OLine is having troubles giving his QB adequate time in the pocket, that he simply refuses to call passing plays that have WR's, TE's, or RB's running short underneath routes or leaks as a release valve if things get hairy. He Refuses to run the ball, using screens or draws to keep opposing D-lines honest. He instead seems to fall into (what looks like to me) mad bravado, this mindset that he's going to prove the Packers can and will break off 30-40 yards of real estate through the air at a time.
I'd love to fault Rodgers for looking for the deep play too much, but guess what? It seems like he doesn't have a choice when all of his WR's are running 4 second routes and he only has 2.5 seconds before his protection dissolves. Give the kid some quick outlet options or running plays and start using your head instead of your balls to playcall, McCarthy.
Lastly, Jordy Nelson's non-TD should have been challenged. Looked like a TD to me. Feet in, ball hits inside of pylon before knees go down, TD. Lost 6 points right there.
What's the deal with PI calls now adays? I seem to remember not to long ago, if a defender is looking for the ball while it's in the air, and stays on his current course, if his legs get tangled with the receiver's, it was considered incidental contact, no flag... Poppinga was CLEARLY playing the ball, he was looking at the LOS, the WR never even LOOKED for the ball, Pop stays on his original course, legs get tangled, and it's PI??!! WTF? Adding to the grief, it was within 5 yards of the LOS, where he could have legally jacked the WR up with his hands if he really wanted to. Ugly, game changing call late in the game on a 3rd and short.

If I remember right, during the game against the Lions, MM was trying to run early when it wasn't working, which led to Arodg saying that they weren't doing the right play calling, that they needed to pass more. This game, the running was working, the pass wasn't and we leaned on the pass in spite of it. Early when we would run it made the pass rush slow down.
October 10, 2010 at 09:06 pm
Actually, the Running game WAS working early in the Lions game, and MM just quit calling running plays.
You don't need to break off 10+ yard plays to have an effective run game. If you can consistently get 3.5ish yards a carry, it's enough to keep a defense honest.
October 10, 2010 at 06:43 pm
DDs drop on 3rd before crosby fieldgoal miss was the game to me.
October 10, 2010 at 09:21 pm
Right on, was waiting for someone to mention this, and not to mention missing the 4th and one that early of the game and not go for points?--I understand the injuries, BUT DD drops, game done.
This team has no cohesion on offense.
D-fence, now offence, injuries galore=now we will see what this coaching staff is all about!See alot of changes in off season.
October 10, 2010 at 06:59 pm
3 games in a row, Bears game was just odd, against the Lions the Pack was overconfident, and the Pack had multiple injuries against the Redskins.
What ever the reasons the Pack has not played a game well in 3 weeks.
A good coach gets the most out of the players he has, like N. Carolina beating Alabama, Alabama has the better athletes, Alabama just got out coached that game.
Will MM wake up by mid season again, who knows?
Even with all the excuses or reasons, the last 3 games we had the better athletes, yet we are 1-3.
October 10, 2010 at 07:32 pm
do you mean South Carolina ?
October 10, 2010 at 07:08 pm
A good note, we found an ILB who can play with some big play abilities in Bishop, he should in the good this week.
October 10, 2010 at 07:26 pm
PACKERS ARE A BUST.
October 10, 2010 at 07:32 pm
Okay, I've calmed down. Ya know, as bummed as I was about today's loss and the violently disgusting injury report, I think the Packers will be fine. The defense is playing well overall, and the offense WILL find a rhythm. They might start peaking at just the right time. The only thing that could stop them (and this is obviously my biggest concern) is an extended injury report.
October 10, 2010 at 07:42 pm
I have been ripped for almost everything I've said and yet it all comes to be proven after every game. The funniest shit is what comes from others.
We'll just OUT SCORE everyone.
Who needs a running game.
Did you see how we held the lead?
Who plans for back-ups like Vick?
We had the #2 defense LAST YEAR.
We only got toasted by ELITE QB's.
Our OL played much better in the second half of season.
We'll be fine.
Super Bowl or Die!!!
The shit goes on forever, and all I said in a few different ways is a very basic, easy concept which engulfed the whole situation in yours and my beloved Green Bay Packer world, well in mine at least as I'm more looked on as an imposter in yours, is simply TALENT.
We have a couple of marquis players(Rodgers,Matthews,Woodson) for sure and a few, more than or just good players.The problem is we don't have enough players that would be considered to play as starters elsewhere.Let's take a looksy;
Bush,Hawk,Poppy,Peprah,Underwood,Zombo,Chillar,B Jones, both Lee's,Jackson,Colledge and yes Clifton and Tauscher. Really, teams we need to beat will start these guys.
There is an upside(for those with sand hiding their heads)we can expect Harris and the"one hit wonder"Bigby himself to get the job done, right!!!Let's not forget Collins who should like what,IDK 40 freaking INT's but doesn't,and the man himself Barnett who has taken a sabatical and will decide on surgery what in April.Any chance they fix his big mouth and the wrist at the same time.
I believe that MM and TT are clueless at times by the things they do and don't do.No trades, not drafting to fill deep needs, play calling, and the incessant habit of calling the other coach and holding the next plays up for all to see.But the worst is the "status quo" mentality roster choices.
My personal favorite is the one that is ranted by an esteemed member of CHTV,
"We have Rodgers,we'll just OUT SCORE everybody"yeah, that's the ticket I'm buying FOR SURE!!!
Mia,Minn,Jets,Dal and then comes one we can't lose.
Have a nice Day!!!

October 10, 2010 at 08:36 pm
Feel better?
Yes, the team had a bad day - and McCarthy was a big reason why. But you're seriously scared of the Vikings and the Cowboys? Have you watched them play? They're worse than the Packers at the moment. The Packers took a step back today. How McCarthy reacts will go a long way in determining if they can improve. They did it last year - let's not count them out yet.
October 10, 2010 at 09:45 pm
I don't think it's a matter of counting the Packers out yet, Aaron. It's just a great deal of disappointment with the fact that the tribulations of last year's Packers haven't been part of some sort of learning curve that has led to a more disciplined team.
Yeah, the Pack turned it around last year. I grant that totally. But I don't understand why we can't build on the second half of last year without repeating the first half.
In the Sherman years we'd blow it in the playoffs. But there were usually several regular season games of which to be proud. Sunday was a special day. I'd hoped the rebuild would give us a team that not only was strong in the regular season, but could finally take us back to the Super Bowl. I feel we've lost ground since then, where I'd hoped for improvement. And that makes me sad. Because I don't think it's because this team doesn't have the talent. I think it just lacks leadership and discipline.
Until the problem of discipline is addressed, no amount of blather about fundamentals and positives is going to help much.
Part of being a fan is hurting. And the pain is real. You can't love the Packers, watch that game and not hurt inside.

Trust me, I hear you. But the volcanic bullshit after every game gets old. McCarthy's teams, in games and seasons. ALWAYS start slow. But people still act surprised.
October 11, 2010 at 02:29 am
But <I>why?</I> If he can't turn his critical eye upon his own soul and demand the best from himself, how will he ever inspire his men?
October 10, 2010 at 10:04 pm
Judas is laughing at you-TT
TT won't reach out for help-Judas finally got his way----TT, your on my short list.
ONE other thing, MM, we don't have a running game, and 4th and one at that time of the game you don't put 3 on the board? WTF, and DD aging, I want to see more of Nelson, or even Swain!
October 11, 2010 at 01:18 pm
Yes, why do MM's teams start slow, especially since that is precisely what they worked on in the off season? They were looking so together in the preseason, which lead to much of the SB talk.
October 11, 2010 at 05:52 pm
Aaron,a bad day.The only game this year that we might consider a decent day was against Buffalo and that is really hard to accept as a compliment. So am I scared of Mia, Minn,Dal, and the Jets, right down to my socks(if I was actually wearing any) and shit,I'm more afraid of the freaking "Bye" week more.
What ever happens from now till then is scary, the rebounding after the Bye is even more crucial with only 6 weeks to go.
October 10, 2010 at 07:57 pm
The NFC is wide open, can't afford to lose any more games we should win!
October 10, 2010 at 08:05 pm
Aaron, I wonder if you get more hits when the Packers lose. Sure seems like everyone is here to piss on the team and give up the season.
I said from the beginning on this very website that this is a 9-7 or 10-6 team. We're not an elite team that can overcome the mistakes we make. Especially when there's this many injuries but the backups really did a TREMENDOUS JOB except for whoever spelled Matthews...
I'd argue that there's no elite team in the league at all this year, and especially not in the NFC...and even more specifically certainly not in the NFC North. Every team thus far has major weaknesses.
October 10, 2010 at 08:32 pm
well its a good thing there is not an elite team because the fact that the nfc is full of average teams is the only thing giving this squad a chance. the expectations for this team were obviously way overblown by media fans and the packers themselves.

"Aaron, I wonder if you get more hits when the Packers lose." Yes.
October 10, 2010 at 08:54 pm
I have been a staunch MM defender the last 2 yrs, but I'm beginning to question that. This loss squarely falls on his shoulders. He did nothing to adjust today. When you have a severely hobbled D, shouldn't you make an effort to keep them off the field--ie eat clock with a running game? When you lose youre top 2 TE's and your WR's are dropping balls like crazy, shouldn't you adjust and try to run the ball? Especially when the running game is working? especially with a 10 point lead?? I'm not saying we should play NOT to lose or play scared. Just make some damn adjustments to the reality. I think he stunk it up today and would hope he'll take some responsibility for this loss.
October 10, 2010 at 09:00 pm
as does every fan site, call in show etc etc...common knowledge. avenues like this one are great for letting the average rube vent. maybe we should all just sing a happy tune and be on our way. but i thought expressing opinions was the point of a fan blog like this.
October 10, 2010 at 09:33 pm
Heres a hint to the poor production of the Green Bay Packers....Missing from all the hype we received this pre-season was any for Thompson and McCarthy.
October 11, 2010 at 01:12 am
Scoring just 13 points? Really? Something must be wrong, because everyone who was reporting on the Packers expected some high scoring offense, where the defense would give up too many points and they would get into shootouts. So: What's wrong? Is it just the injuries? I don't think so (on the offensie side it was "just" Grant until yesterday). The offense seems "out of rhythm". No real gameflow, lots of quick 3 and outs.
And now the schedule gets a lot tougher. And the injuries pile up. This looks more and mor like a 8-8 season (if the Pack doesn't lose more players to the injury bug).
P.S. What is wrong with referees and obvious shots to the head of Aaron Rodgers? It never gets caled. Other QBs get little touching to the helmet and get 15 yard penalties, he gets hammered with helmet to helmet hits and nothing happens. *off to puke*
October 11, 2010 at 05:20 pm
Absolutely, this is a mediocre team and 8-8 is about right, especially considering the injuries we've sustained. Beaten by a crappy Redskin team, self destructed against the Bears and only a missed field goal away from losing to the Lions who were playing without their starting quarterback. Counting on a 7-1 record to bail us out at the end of the season is asking a bit too much. At least we will be drafting higher next year.
October 11, 2010 at 04:10 am
rule one of football discussion:
if it's not the QB it's the coach.
Forget that the running game is weaksauce and the WRs are dropping balls... the injury rate... couple fumbles here and there.
It's a good team, not a great one, and an unlucky one.
I'd say expectations are more realistic now. They should have always been "win a playoff game."
October 11, 2010 at 04:12 am
"P.S. What is wrong with referees and obvious shots to the head of Aaron Rodgers? It never gets caled. Other QBs get little touching to the helmet and get 15 yard penalties, he gets hammered with helmet to helmet hits and nothing happens."
Or even called :-). I totally agree, dude put his hands in the air (smart move) but still had helmet-to-helmet contact with #12 (enough to give him a concussion), 15 and a 1st. It is getting old not getting those calls, but what's even worse is continually getting into a position where we let 1 non-call possibly affect the outcome of the game. We should have had them put away in the 1st half. PERIOD. And yeah, injuries hurt (I really think I lost my mind for a minute and started laughing at the frequency of key players dropping), but we still should have FINISHED that game.
I don't want to be "THAT GUY" but I'm really starting to wonder if Coach can get his team to a Title/over the hump. Every year, Discipline issues/unreal# of penalties, Pad level, Special teams roller coaster. I like the guy, but this shits turning into Groundhog day. And Ted, the more I hear Mortensen and Schefter ridicule you for the NON-Lynch acquisition, the more I think they're right. I generally like/approve of the way you handle your business, but that one's just a pure fucking head scratcher, hope you're right.

October 11, 2010 at 04:44 pm
WHat? Waste a third round draft choice for a running back? We wouldn't run if a D showed three in box on first down.
Still very optimistic but BALANCE please.
October 11, 2010 at 05:25 pm
We can't count on the referees to win any games for us. That game turned when Mathews went out of the game and we no longer pressured McNabb. We dominated the first half of that game but let them "hang around" because our offense seams to have forgotten how to score.
