Gut Reactions: Packers outlast Chiefs on primetime stage

Aaron gives his gut reasctions from the Packers win over the Chiefs

  • That's how you take control of a game early and don't let go
  • Loved how efficient they were on offense early
  • AJ Dillon run like a bull tonight and once again got tough yards where there really wasn't much available
  • I liked how Jordan Love was using his cadence to get the Chiefs to declare and then checking into things to take advantage.
  • That said, Spagnuolo caught on quick.
  • All Ben Sims does is catch touchdowns.
  • That 4th down throw to Doubs. Mercy.
  • We're not going to talk about the three man rush on 3rd and 18
  • What an incredible play by Nixon
  • Please let Watson be ok.
  • I couldn't stop laughing at all the coaches telling Valentine to get down to end the game on the fumble recovery that was eventually overturned.
  • And yes, that was pass interference at the end. There were plenty of opportunities for the Chiefs to make a play throughout the game so that missed call wouldn't cost them.
  • And yes, that unnecessary roughness penalty for the hit on Mahomes was total bullshit.
  • The Packers have played some pretty damn good football the last few weeks.
  • Go Pack Go.

An awesome hit by Owens, with Mahomes in bounds and going forward, that was wrongly called a penalty. It seems it would be reviewable in the last two minutes.
On the other hand, on the last play of the game, it was stupid for Owens to push Kelce from behind with the pass in the air. It may not have been all that much of a push, but it seems to have been worthy of a penalty that wasn't called.
Weird officiating at the end, with maybe two big calls against the Packers, two big calls for the Packers.
***
Even if the Chiefs score a touchdown, they have to make a 2-point conversion to tie, due to Andy Reid going for a 2-point conversion, and failing, way too early in the game with the score in favor of the Packers 14-12.

Very impressive control of the Offense.
No stupid penalties.
Defense playing hard.
Love has his connection with Watson, health is an issue.
Doubs finds holes.
I've never felt so good about losing the total wins bet.
A little more aging and seasoning, wow.
This was the most winning football in any game this season.
This team is looking...dangerous.
PLAYOFF bound, for sure.

Do I actually have to reconsider that MLF had a Rodgers hangover the first half of the season and that we're about to see some consistent sizzle in the offense. I kept waiting for him to go into a shell, to become timid, and it just didn't happen.

Dillon ran HARD. The blocking schemes seemed smart to my undisciplined eye. I was...impressed.

How much if this is Love being really good and unlocking the talent?

The OL rotation remains a bad idea, but Dillon was getting key yards despite the lack of blocking. A lot if credit to him today? A nice run by Taylor too.

The Chiefs really aren’t that good offensively outside of Kelce. But the Chiefs may have been wiser to run it even more, which is quite something with Mahomes. That’s the second week running that could be said of the opponents tactics. When we score early we throw teams off their game, not us off ours. The Chiefs do not look like the team they were last year on O by some distance.

The good news is that this year's draft is strong for IOL and T, so there's a fair chance that the Packers can grant that one dblbogey.

With the progress of the skilled position rookies this year, the Packers could be a scary stacked roster next year.

Reducing the penalties and turnovers - combined with execution is really allowing the momentum to become points.

If you go back and look at a couple of the games that they lost, the key play penalties and turnovers were the game wreckers.

The last two weeks he’s made this O go where it had stagnated before. Was he honestly bettered by Mahomes today? I don’t think so. That’s not a career, but he’s done it throwing to multiple players, and there were great throws in there. That’s quite an achievement.

This offensive set of skill players is making Gute look pretty good despite issues with the OL even today. Stringing two games like that together is pretty damn impressive. That D was the second best passing defense in the league by yards allowed through the air coming into tonight’s game.

LaFleur didn’t pick Love or anyone who caught a ball. Not one young skill player had a bad day and Love did things that go beyond just ordinary, for the second week running.

The big winner here is Love without doubt, the second the young skill players en masse, and thus Gute.

So your take away from that game is that Gute’s not hood for taking Love not Purdy? He should have taken Hurts at 53 in ‘20 not Love at 26? I doubt that would have made Mr Rodgers much happier. After the last few weeks I’m not so sure the wisdom of that is clear cut for the present, let alone the long term as it looked in the summer.

Rodgers really was drafted because of

They all get injured and miss games, as with broken collarbones etc. Favre should have been benched when he had the broken thumb/hand. I watched that particular sideshow in person when he tossed three gimme's to the fish hawks when Holmgren returned. Rodgers was drafted because he ws the best QB in the draft and fit the WCO. Jordan Love just turned 25, not 40. He is one tough hombre. Same path as Rodgers who wasn't even recruited out of HS ,but went to Butte head U. Love was all-section playing in Bakersfield and was offered by Utah State, drafted as a Junior. I do not see your point of view.

The overwhelming consensus on this board was for Love to show improvement as the season went forward. That is happening. He had one terrible throw and one questionable throw. Otherwise, he was aware of the situation, threw the ball away when a sack was imminent, and showed an ability to throw catchable balls to his WR's. The difference from earlier games? The WR's are actually catching the passes. The entire team seems to be growing up together on offense. On defense? They need a new DC. But we've been beating that drum for several years. I will give you credit for having the guts to take your lumps, even though you are wrong.

You still had a brain fart for delay of game.
That 5 yards changed the momentum.
And those little things cost us in the red zone last year.
Another was a sack of 10 yards. No FG?
Little tings that Love needs to clean -up.
But were only looking for progress.
And he has shown that.

You mean like the continual brain farts from your man-crush currently wandering the sideline out East? You remember - he would have two or three of those a GAME. And the sack - instead of throwing the ball away, risking an interception and stopping the clock - gave up 10 meaningless yard. Nothing to clean up there.

He was never a systems QB. At Utah State he ran a wide-open attack designed by David Yost and took chances.
After almost 10 years after Davante was brought on board, the brain trust decided to bring in kids well-versed in the Air Raid attacks. Watson was my #22 guy all the way. Doubs being there in rd four was a stroke of luck. I still have a hard time with Walker as an ILB who will hit. As we note frequently, a 4-3/4-2 system would be a better defense, then Walker can go WLB. The deal is, he doesn't blitz effectively and plug the gaps. I like Wyatt. Let him play like Sapp. His quick feet were on display, don't waste his talent playing a 3-4.

GB had the ball on KC 46, 4th & 1. In post game, QB said he saw KC safety move off Doubs, Chris Jones bearing down full speed, so he threw it to where Doubs was supposed to be knowing the safety couldn't get there. Doubs catches it at the 11. Good fortune, not luck. And if intercepted at the 11, works just like a punt on 4th & 1.

Great game to watch. Great to see the Packers bring the intensity again against another high-end team.

Interesting that their rules expert pretty much said the officiating fell apart at the end (starting with the personal foul on Owens). Still, they never call DPI in the endzone on an end-of-game hail mary.

The refs letting the "fumble" play out at the end led to the ejection of Pacheco, which I think was a pretty significant blow for KC.

Hopefully the Packers bring it again next week against a really bad Giants team. Watson looked like he was walking without a limp in the postgame handshakes, so hopefully it was just a scare and not anything serious.

His arm moving to the ball and he was looking back for it while MVS was scoping the sky. I would not have called it. The Endzone scrum never should have happened if Barry puts Mahomes on the ground. Playing prevent with Mahomes is like inviting Annie Oakley to a shooting gallery. The guy has to be replaced.

Blow me For all the fair-weather fans out there that have been giving Love a rash of shit as he continues to grow, he just matched Rodgers win total for his first season as a starter, and still has five games to go. Team played well, d line did its job, we continue to win with key guys out injured, but most of all? The guys on the field believe in Love. What a joy to watch!

On the other side of the ball, calling a three-man rush should be a fireable offense.

Mark Wahle said last week that it looked like LaFleur had finally realized that he’s calling games for Love not Rodgers and calling accordingly. I’m left Wondering if this isn’t really Love starting to carry this team and LaFleur. That would make this even better.

I have to give a shout out to Gary, Smith and even Van Ness, particularly in the first half. Getting to a guy who’s only been hit for 13 sacks thus far 3 times really tipped the game too. Great play by Nixon was equally crucial. Personally I want to give kudos to Owens for not shying away from preventing Mahomes her a first down. That call really irritates on a number of levels.

It is getting to be a lot of fun to watch our defense as well as our offense, while even special teams is looking at least solid. (Kudos to Anders Carlson for a perfect night with a clutch finish.)
I may be too hard on Barry, but I'm concerned that his three-man rush, and general history of passiveness over his time with the Packers, will cost us down the road this season in a big game or two.
It's a risk to get rid of him as far as continuity when things are going well, but also a risk to keep him as far as holding back our defense and having future heartbreak.
I'd sadly let him go because I think it would be for the good of the team.

Winners somehow get these wins. Great gut reaction comments on the game.

What a turnaround for this team. And with all the injuries! Was it just nerves that made Love 'so bad' in the early games? IDK but he seems to be pretty settled now. What a turnaround! I am wondering if the injury to AJ forced some more aggressive play calling that seems to be working. And these yound receivers can catch the ball if Love gets it near them. Confidence will only help these players grow.

How is the league going to fix the officiating?

How about 'dem Packers?
Not to shabby..

Hey.. by the way... 11-6 is starting to look like it might be in the realm of possibility now, isn't it?
Still not likely... but... neither was bullying the Lions and putting up 29 on a KC defense that's averaging surrendering about16 ppg on the season for a win... in back to back weeks, no less..

Mahomes in the post game on the non calls.. " yeah he might of gotten there a little early, but it's the end of the game and they're letting the guys play, I'm kinda all about that letting guys play at the end." Real dude right there. It's the truth. The last thing you wanna hear at the end of the game is announcers talking about fuckin non calls, and even worse is when they bring in the retired ref to put in his two cents about how you have to call that on mvs. No. You don't. It's the end of the game and he chucked one up, yeah like mahomes said Valentine was early, but mvs ain't making that play and Valentine went for the ball. That circus with Terry mcauly at the end is just bad for football man imo.

There is no way I ever expected an in season turn around like this. I thought MLF was a dead man walking. It’s hard to believe it’s the same team. All of a sudden they are a lot of fun to watch.

I still think his staff is a lead weight. I am very close to thinking Gute may have struck gold with that pick of Love though as he did with Gary. He may have done so again with this young group of skill players. If that’s the case, we really win much more than 2 games these last two Sundays.

Is it LaFleur’s calling, or LaFleur just letting Love be himself? Part of me thinks the last 2 weeks may represent a real talent blossoming and breaking the shackles he’d stretched in prior second halves. Love has been much better the last two weeks than I expected to see this year.

A great day for Gute and Love.

Yes And for that reason I am more than happy to eat crow. But JB still should go. Enjoy everyone.
Remember this year is about finding out if Love is good , players developing. Everything else is gravy. Aaron Jones is coming back and even possibly without Watson for a while we can even make the playoffs, which is a bonus, and the best experience they can get. All that is far more than we could have ever hoped for this year!

Ill call it even on MVS no call. Chiefs got 2 huge calls on that drive they shouldn't have got. One the PF on the hit on Mahomes was total crap, but even bigger the pass out to the left that the Packer defender stopped the receiver going forward and even had him going backwards and ref called receiver out of bounds and stopped clock with 19 seconds left.

Thank you for pointing out the bad call on the clock being stopped when the Chiefs player was driven backwards before going out of bounds. Without that, the last play never even would've happened.

It would be very sad if the narrative on this game shifts to the missed PI call at the end of the game. It was a game the Packers controlled wire to wire and convincingly outplayed the Super Bowl champs.

A few weeks ago the Packers appeared to be a train wreck, arguably one of the worst teams in the league. Now they hold the final playoff spot with a weak schedule coming up. You don't see the torches and pitchforks anymore!

There's magic back in Green Bay again! This team reminds me of the Packers in the early-mid 90's when they were starting to find their groove.

But as for the actual football besides the endgame nonsense, lafleur really called a good game. He called a few key time outs too, once when love tried to catch the d off guard, but it looked like the Packers were also off guard and clearly needed to huddle., and another on D when savage was throwing his hands in the air cus clearly somebody was lost. The Packers had made mistakes earlier in the season in these same circumstances on offense and lafleur didn't allow that to happen the time. I also couldn't stand the 3 man rush on 3rd and 18, because mahomes had all the time in the world to step up and bait the safety's. So what does Joe b do? Sticks with that fuckin 3 man rush anyway. But... The players on D did enough to win, despite Joe b. Nixon, Valentine, Van Ness, enegbare, slaton, brooks, even ballentine. They have a lot of flawed guys that play hard with heart on that d and they are easy to root for. Especially considering the role players used to be guys like Lowery and Lancaster. Dillon ran hard at least. And I love these young wrs, how can you stop all those young wrs with love firing the way he is? This team is fun at least and it felt good to just be nervous at the end of the game for the first time in a while.

I'll admit, I gave up on Love after the Raiders loss. I predicted a Broncos win and was unfortunately right. But I also have to say that I wanted Love on draft night 2020 and cannot be any happier that he's turned things around. I believe now. He's going to be a Packer for a long, long time.

No, but it would be fun if a coach on the proverbial hot seat would say after a loss in which his team kicked the other team's ass but lost due to turnovers/luck - "Well, they sucked. Most of their players are no better than D3 college guys and JAGs and their coach wouldn't know a game plan if it bit him in the ass. They just got effing lucky today."

After a defeat? No. After a victory? Yes.

We only need to go back to the press conference after the 1987 NCAA Men's Basketball Regional Final and listen to Bobby Knight after his Hoosiers rallied to defeat Dale Brown's LSU Tigers 77-76:

"I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale Brown. Then I knew we had a chance."

And Christmas comes early I love it! They keep getting better and better so they could be favorites in all of their remaining games 😲

Watson seems like a Ferrari that should be playing in warm weather, but they need a reliable 4wd in the frozen tundra. Too bad seems like a good kid 😢

Don’t watch the last KC possession as the young team tried to screw up just enough to lose but will be able to watch the list of correctable moments for the coaches and still have the W….win - win 👍🏼

The Packers beat the Chiefs the last time they were at Lambeau on 9/28/2015 by a score of 38-28. Tonight the Pack beat the Chiefs again 27-19. We are witnessing the growth of a young team learning to ball big time against NFL gamers. This is fun to watch.

But what a bonehead play by Owens ("Mr. Simone Biles") to hit Mahommes as he went out of bounds. He just wanted to impress his beau in the crowd. He nearly cost the Pack this game. Ya gotta play clean and smart. And Owens did neither!

He was trying to prevent Mahomes from reaching the first down marker. Mahomes had not clearly run out of bounds yet, and it was a good play. Too many examples of a runner tip toeing along the sideline for another 5+ yards when we thought they would just go out bounds.

"survived" is the key word...that was tense!!...When the ref ruled the guy out of bounds instead of forward motion stopped and clock running it got even more tense!!..

Ballentine is a very good tackler for a corner. Valentine is a very promising corner but not a great tackler. If Jaire is truly healthy then he’s going to play and rightly, but I can see Ballentine having a residual role due to his tackling.

I'm not sure I could agree with you, Bitter, I've seen Alexander miss plenty of tackles. But as Coldworld says, he'll be back in the lineup when healthy. Hopefully his time off will show him they CAN win without him and bring him down to earth a bit. For his money, it's time to 'Walk the Walk', we've all heard enough!

I think it was last week, but it might have been two weeks ago, in the post game tv coverage Michael Strahan mentioned how the story was that Love spent three years on the bench learning the game. "I never learned a damn thing on the bench. You learn playing the game, and that's what Love is doing." (may not be exact quote.)

Seems like the entire team is learning.

Like Rodgers before him, I think Love learned two important things:
1. What to do in specific game situations
2. What NOT to do.
For example, Rodgers learned that throwing in the middle of the field can lead to interceptions, so he didn't do it. Love seems to have learned that not throwing in the middle of the field leads to much tighter coverage on the edges, so he's not afraid to do it. He also seems to have learned that spending 15 seconds at the LOS looking over the defense only to call a timeout when the clock hits 1 second isn't a great way to manage a game.

Coaches appear to be coaching and players appear to be learning. I like taking the ball first ATTITUDE. Players are starting to believe they are better than has been reported. I'll say it again...We have a MUCH better WR group than most NFL teams right now-and were gonna get better. Heal up A.Jones we are gonna need what's left in your tank for the playoffs. I believe we have turned a page and are hungry....GPG... Great game Boys.

As usual I'm late to the party, but what I think I saw last night was probably LaFleur's best coaching performance since he got the job. As someone else said, more Coach, less Cheerleader.
I did get pissed when he tried to run out the clock by running Dillon with 5 minutes left in the game and everyone expecting it. We need to buy him a dagger for Xmas.
As for Gutey and Barry, F%#K 'em both!
