Gut Reactions: Packers win Christmas showdown with Browns

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers win over the Browns.

  • The entire feeling after this game would be different if Davante catches that final 3rd down pass.
  • Congrats to Aaron Rodgers on setting the Packers record for most touchdown passes all time.
  • I figured the Browns would run over the Packers, but they RAN over the Packers.
  • Kenny was clearly on a pitch count but it was good to see him back out there.
  • Rasul Douglas made a physical play on the ball after the wide receiver ran into him. Argue with your mom.
  • Also, his first INT, where he peeled off his initial coverage, was absolutely next level vet stuff.
  • I'll never understand why Matt LaFleur hates time outs.
  • Seriously, his first challenge felt like he was challenging the fact that they had to play on Christmas.
  • Why are we running a toss on 3rd and 1 behind a tackle that had been in the game for two plays?
  • I didn't hate going to Davante on either of the incomplete passes on the last drive, by the way. Think players, not plays.
  • If I see Eric Stokes playing more than 8 yards off with safety help behind him on another 3rd and long, I'm going to lose my mind.
  • Hey! Special teams was solid!
  • I get that everyone will look at the last two games and worry. Don't. The road to the Super Bowl is not a red carpet. It's the river of shit that Andy Dufresne crawled through to obtain his freedom.
  • Merry Christmas, Packers fans.

Special Teams put a pretty bow on their "Bag-o-Crap" handing it off and gifting it to the run defense, the run defense immersed themselves in the shit like drunken sailors. Just mind numbing.

Now let's talk Offense disgust, 3 of 10 on 3rd down conversations? Matt, your play calling in this game (esp on 3rd downs) makes me think you were taking hits from that bag of crap the above drunken run D was lathered in. Lets hope Matt gets a Mulligan on this game for MVC award.

Winning ugly is such a double edge sword. Especially when you're trying to hold on to that top seed.

I'm appreciative that they won.

I'm concerned that the D is going to get picked apart by better QB's if they continue playing like this.

Darnell Savage is developing a bad case of the HaHa's (or MD Jennings'). Concerning as he's starting to get targeted. Are some of the secondary now spooked from tackling hard since Alexander ended up on IR laying the wood?

For mine, I hope that he plays.

We’ve seen that this Packers D can play better against the run - and Darnell Savage as the FS.

They’ve punched their finals ticket already, the more they tune up and play football against either finals teams or elite players, then the better they will be prepared.

What was the best defense for the Packers against the Browns?
(a) The Packers offense.
(b) The Browns passing offense.
(c) Big plays for the Packers in terms of interceptions and sacks.
(d) Bad officiating that helped the Packers.
(e) All of the above.

Considering how well the Browns ran the ball, it makes one wonder just why Mayfield thought that he had to even push those picked passes.

Did the Browns just get sharked by an elaborate sting by the Packers secondary? - "Play like the Keystone Cops till they discount us... then pick em off".

Definition of insanity Baker - make the same mistake and expect a different outcome.

I agree with pretty much everything, but yeah, I think Rasul (thankfully) got away with a hold or PI with the jersey tug.

Most importantly, we needed that W.

Ho! Ho! Holy Shit! Some of the best gifts come unwrapped and are carefully held.

Thank goodness we had Baker Mayfield on our team today.

Has the bar been set incredibly low or did I really see decent special teams play from Mo’s guys today?

Can we somehow get our D to hit, tackle, and play with the same urgency as the Browns D? Five sacks, four interceptions, but totally freakin’ owned from the get-go.

Confirmed: canoe paddle hands run in the Stokes family. Young Eric has a severe case.

Yosh handled Garrett. Seems like the LT we want is playing now. What else do we want the guy to do?

As frustrating as that was to watch, the Packers didn’t ruin Christmas. Good try, though.

Inaccurate in this game anyway. I think it was due to the harness on his left shoulder. After Aikman pointed that out, I was watching Mayfield more carefully, and his throwing motion looked a little awkward on the follow-through.

The Bucs that just got shut out at home?
The 9ers that just lost to ghost of what used to be the Titans?
The Cowboys who haven't had a good offensive play in a month?
The Cardinals, 2 - 3 in their last 5?

As much as the Packers infuriate us, they do still seem to be the cream of the crop.

Every. Damn. Game!

The Packers come out in the first quarter like they didn't realize the game had actually started and get behind.

In the 2nd and 3rd quarters the Packers look like World Champs, the defense makes big plays and the offense looks unstoppable. The team gets a big lead and the game looks in the bag.

Then the 4th quarter comes and the defense can't do a thing and looks totally helpless until there's less than a minute to go and they make a big play. The offense has forgotten how to play and can't get a single first down.

Somehow just when you are sure they blew a winnable game, they somehow win.

Every. Damn. Game!

I don't get it. Didn't the D get the interceptions? Or did I miss something?

I think it is much better this way. Better to let the opponents take the little plays. If there are many little plays, that gives the D more chance to get the splash play (INT). And the D did exactly that. Would you have been happier if the D had been able to get three 3-and-outs but without the INTs? And the 4th INT be the one big play for the Browns to take the TD?

That would have given the Browns the W. However, the D was opportunistic, and made the big plays when they were really needed, and thus the Packers came away with the win.

As for the offense, if it was a slugfest, the offense would have played accordingly and put up more points.

The issue is interceptions are generally fluky and not something you can rely on, especially come playoff time when you're going against the best QBs at their sharpest. At least two in this game were the result of Mayfield simply throwing bad balls, while the other two were bang-bang plays that could've easily had flags thrown on us to negate them. If not for said fluky interceptions, we almost definitely lose because they were bulldozing over us the entire game otherwise.

Yes I’d rather a defense that stops opponents on downs. Relying on splash turnovers is the classic bend but don’t break trash we’ve had for 10 years. The first 8-10 games this year were defensive beauty, forcing punt after punt and created a buzz about Joe Barry. Last 4 games have been the same Capers/Pettine rubbish.

Bitonio is an elite guard. So is Wyatt Teller. Dunn is good. Their center, Nick Harris, was a newby (5th round pick in 2020) stuck behind JC Tretter, who was out for the game. Harris had a good game. Time will have to tell whether that's because he is good or GB was bad. Hance is okay - probably average or so. His PFF grade is better than Patrick's or Newman's and is about the same as Nijman's.

When healthy (with Jack Conklin at OT and Tretter at OC), this is an excellent OL. Their TEs, Hooper and Njoku, can block.

Aaron Rodgers is a BAD man... Especially in the first half this week.

Rasul Douglas is officially the greatest midseason pickup in Packers history. I LOVE that dude. BTW... I'm with Aaron on that last pick...The Cleveland WR ran right into Dougas for first contact. There would be a flag on damn near every play if they threw a flag every time a little jersey is pulled.

The Packers CAN NOT let Dalvin Cook or ANYONE ELSE run over them the way Nick Chubb did today. Lets get it figured out Run D...

That was a GOOD Challenge by MLF of the CATCH by Winfree. The first one, not so much...

12-3 Friends, 12-3. I love this team!!!

I can only say the refs do not want the Browns in the play-offs. If the Refs don't call it. The Packers will keep doing it. Savage needs some serious coaching. After this game. You Bet The Refs were picking on Stokes. This DL is so slow. The Browns only had to run away from Clark. MVS was missed. And a big Hoorah for the Special Teams. This Team needs reinforcements. You know you just watched a bizarre game when you get 4 INTs and most of the posts are skewering the D.

I still think that Rasul 2nd INT was tipped. They conveniently stopped showing the defensive view of the play, but it did look tipped live and the 1 time they showed the review from the D side of the ball.

ST was adequate. I will always take that with this team.

Does this team just give you the MM vs Seahawks creeps at times. Wow

It's said to better be lucky than good....and we've been beyond lucky. Watching Chubb, he does not seem special, chugs along, maybe a little harder to bring down than an average back. I did not see special vision or great speed either. I think the Browns block better as a team in the run game and obvious holding, which was not called no matter how obvious. It's a good thing we had the turnovers because it was the only time we had momentum. Could have and should have put up 2 scores on them and we get 2- 3 and outs with same lame play calling and execution. The longer AR toe is an issue and our offense is not practicing like normal, the longer it will be for the offense to execute like a #1 seed. I don't have an excuse for the defense but dragging out JA return is not a plus... he has been out long enough to heal a broken bone if it was ever fractured.

I see a run team with pretty good blocking for the most part. His longest career run was in this game...says a lot. He's a work horse. Every time he got to a side his blockers had it walled off for easy yards. He's a little bigger and harder to bring down and spent most of the day in the secondary. Our D made him look even better. Easy yards and easy passes and soft protection made for a opponent that hung around too long. Good thing their QB throws a lot of picks. They block better than the Packers do on run plays. Weighs 227 ran 4.52. He's a bull.

Chubb is making $12M per year, with $17M fully guaranteed. PFF grades are great. He can run and catch.

Cleveland has a good OL and had a good one in 2020 as well. Not so much in 2018 and 2019, and Chubb still kicked ass.

Clearly one quarterback deserves to be in insurance commercials and the other one definitely DOES NOT. Numerous misfires and 4 INTs (should've been 5 if Stokes makes an easy one)--never could see what the big deal was about Baker.

Santa delivers: A competent special teams performance--what a surprise!

Orange dunce cap: Stefanski. When you're averaging 8.8 yards on the ground, it's something you might want to stick with, especially in the final drive. Don't outsmart yourself.

Green dunce cap, Part 1: MLF. Regardless of the advice given from upstairs (or wherever), neither of those challenges were worth it unless the evidence was incontrovertible. And in both cases, it couldn't have been any further from it.

Green dunce cap, Part 2: Why were we fiddling around with backfield tosses in the second half? Just give the ball to Dillon and let him plow forward!

AR: That was a beautiful throwaway to Deguara as he was being chased, as only the receiver could have made the catch, and he almost did for a TD.

Defense: Gary and Douglas were awesome. Rush defense, not so much. Savage: Another costly low block penalty on one TD drive, and a big missed tackle on another.

The Douglas tug: You can say the refs missed it, or that Douglas has mastered the art of pushing the holding rule to its limit. I prefer the latter.

Really lucky to hang on here. The defense gave up huge gobs of yardage, but they made all the big plays, including another 2-pt. conversion stop.

Cleveland and Baltimore are two of the top 4 teams running the ball in the league, and Cleveland does it without the advantage of a scrambling QB. Still, the extent to which the Packers are getting owned on the edges over the last couple weeks is a remarkable turnaround from what we saw mid-season. It seems the Packers just don't care, either. Minnesota is also a top 10 running team, and I fully expect them to play a lot of 2 TE sets and try to hammer the edges against the Packers next week.

I'm beginning to agree with you. The last 4 games the D has been playing like they just learned the game! Certainly playing back on their heels. Bad tackling, slow, soft zone and too many examples of miscommunication. Just an overall poor effort.

Looked like a considerable amount of man coverage today. The browns used motion fairly regularly and generally speaking a DB followed the offensive alignment across the formation.

Playing off? Yeah, they were playing a lot of off coverage. Soft zone? Not as much as people seem to be saying.

Before thinking of being a SB team, let's enjoy being the 1st team in the NFL for at least one more week and closer to that much needed bye considering the pain AR seemed to play through today.

The pack got ran over but remember there are not many better than Chubb and his two pro bowl guards. 5 sacks and 4 int, that's the way defense is played in today's game. Just be opportunistic and that's the definition of this year's team. They just find a way to win and I'm fine with that.

It can go either way.

If you pound dillon early, you can wear down the front and get them gassed and broken, and a fresh-legged Jones can dice them up late.

I kind of feel like I'd ride the back that sees early success on any given day. If Jones is finding the cutback lanes, let him be the primary back early and let dillon close out the games. If it's the other way around, swap roles.

We're really blessed to have two backs with varying styles, but yet, both are effective taking the hand off or catching the ball out of the back field.

They did the same thing last week, too. Why draft the guy if you're not going to use him in exactly the situations where he excels? Makes no sense, and it's one reason MLF does not deserve coach of the year.

Yes, obvious to everyone on the planet but ML...second year in a row. Also better get the 3rd stringer going at some point so he knows what to do when needed.

I missed the first half and just watching the 2nd half was rather deflating. I'm not sure why Nagler says not to worry about the last 2 games. Why not? D playing soft, offense not clicking 100%, ST !! The one thing this team has been missing consistently for years is the killer instinct and ability to put teams away.

Its looking like MLF is saving return of players for the playoffs. That sounds dangerous - not getting them any real practice. OTOH, if they aren't ready, this team is not showing us that they are ready to run to the SB.

Minn would like nothing better than to mess us up next week. I hope we get prepared.

I highly doubt that LaFleur is saving players for the playoffs. If they could play, they would at least be practicing. At this point, it looks like Alexander is the only one who has a decent chance of coming back at all. Bahktiari and Z Smith are looking like they won't make it.

If you missed the first half and endured the 2nd half, I am glad you're not suicidal.

Some good things happened in the first half. Um, not much in the 2nd other than hanging on for deal life.

The Packers have been successful under Lefluer because of Rodgers not Lefluer , his ridiculous play calling late in the game stalled the Packers offense .

Packers need to play better in the 4th quarter. They are allowing easy wins to become much closer games than they be.

Granted the Browns needed the game much more than the Packers and they played like it. I will take the ugly win but we need to get back to playing a full 60 minutes of football or we’re going to have problems in the playoffs.

Rodgers with another excellent performance and our run game was solid. Our defense is looking soft. Need to get back to solid tackling and tighter coverage.

STs didn’t help but they didn’t hurt for the first time in a while. Bring on the Vikings. GPG! Thanks, Since ‘61

Gut reactions. It’s Christmas. Looking at the big picture in regards to life, I’m blessed and wish all of you the same. The game? For having 4 amazing turnovers on defense, this doesn’t seem like a post season defense. We got pounded like a carpenters nail defending the run. My wife bought me GB stock for Christmas so I finally have a voice. Lol. Anyway. You folks have an amazing Christmas and an even better New Year.

Gary was good against the run earlier and not great at getting to the QB. Now it's reversed, he's getting QB hits but letting RBs run around him almost at will. The long third-down they converted was an easy call by the Browns, they knew Gary would crash inside and he did. Watch the great edge rushers, they take a split second to identify what's going on. And can he please stop celebrating a stop when the other team just marched down the field in an 8-minute drive?

Lowry and Lancaster, two players many here wanted to be cut before the season, are starting on the DL and we wonder why teams are running wild? They're both below replacement level. Don't know what we'll do about this but Fournette destroyed us in the championship game last year. He'll be back for the playoffs.

Little pique, can LaFleur stop trying to pump up the crowd like a high school cheerleader? Maybe spend the time tearing into Barry for playing prevent defense the entire game.

LeFleur tries to get the crowd loud because Lambeau field has an embarrassingly quiet home crowd. You want your home crowd to be raucous while the opposing defense in on the field; it's a big part of what is supposed to be home field advantage.

Someone has to teach the lame Lambeau crowd how to be good fans. Sorry, I know everyone wants to believe Packers fans are the league's most knowledgeable fan base, but the crowd is far too reserved lately and with the proposition of home field advantage during the playoffs on the horizon.. SOMEONE has to get Lambeau off their duffs and making noise. You can see on LeFleur's face when he does it- it's the last thing he wants to have to do.

This was a poor game. We essentially only managed to score off the first three turnovers. Lazard appeared to disappear in the second half and took every other offensive weapon with him not named Adams, who was heavily covered. We kept trying to run Jones when we needed to pound Dillon in the second half too.

On D, almost the only things we did right was hold in to 4 of the 5 or 6 throws Mayfield gave us. Terrible line play from everyone other than Clark, bad angles and tackling and, had we played any softer we’d have had to give the DBs the day off. Very poorly called O, terrible D game plan. Lowry us a turnstile. Did someone kidnap Barry about a month ago?

We won, thanks to a bunch of Christmas gifts from Mayfield, who was awful. As to the rest of it, LaFleur and Barry need to buck up.

A win is a win but somehow I feel it is more a loss. Hope after some sleep I will feel better about it in the morning.
Happy the ST played well, we need that every game.
Concerned our D is regressing each week. Looking more like last year and years past. Hope we get a second wind and correct it.
The Browns out played us over all so I am disappointed with our effort but winning it tough in the NFL.

Too often now these games have a McCarthy flow to them. Nagler mentioned the 3rd and 1 toss play. That is absolute horeshit, especially with AJ Dillon. Those 2 three and outs in the 4th ONCE AGAIN allowing a wounded team to get new life are all on Lafleur. Enough already.

Rashan Gary is absoutely killing us with contain. Clay Matthews was guilty of crashing down hard vs the run as the contain player but at least he would fix it at some point during the game.

Krys Barnes was absolutely terrible today. He has regressed this season because he is better suited to be in Campbell's ILB spot where he played last season - similar to how Kirksey looked bad originally and improved towards the end of the year with a pair of picks and some impact plays when they switched him to his more natural weakside ilb spot

There is not another organization in the NFL that would have started Lowry and Lancaster for this long.

Agree that Gary is hurting the Packers with his contain. He is getting sacks and pressures, so I hope he will feel less pressure to get pressures (so to speak) and sacks. Then again, sacks get folks paid, at least sometimes. Some guys with big sack numbers don't get paid. Tipa and Gary are hurting us against the run, Garvin as well if to a lesser extent.

I used a photo of Barnes on the snap count article in a not so subtle suggestion that he played poorly.

All brake, no f'king gas has been the motto the past couple of weeks to start and end the game. The hot-and-cold offense and the inability to stop the run are giving me bad flashbacks. Hope they can get this cleaned up before the Vikings game - the Pack controls their destiny but can't afford to lose one (unless the Cowboys lose one of their next three). The extra week (or two) of rest is something that Rodgers and the team definitely needs.

The defense was a mixed bag, they gave up running yards at a record clip but had 5 sacks and 4 turnovers. Overall, you give up 22 points and you are going to win in the NFL.

The offense was a mixed bag, slow start and a terrible end, and looked unstoppable in the middle.

Maybe if all the bad wasn't the end of the game after they had a double digit lead it would feel different.

This may be one game where we could say that it may have been better to pass a bit more in the 2nd half.

The 2nd INT of Rasul Douglas : one could argue that there is a good case of offensive pass interference. The WR first ran into Rasul, then Rasul returned the favor, then the WR pushed off Rasul and broke for the ball (at which time Rasul did pull his jersey). There was back and forth interference, the referees made the right call to let the physicality play out. All credit to Rasul moving quickly to be in a position to make the INT.

P.I. Cleveland had plenty of no call’s. Basically the Ref’s were letting them play. You take what you get.
I’m more concerned about 4th Q finishing. Why not use Dillion for the critical 3’rd & 3?
Happy for the W, let’s be ready for an Energized Viqueens team next week.

How are we not talking about how bad Eric Stokes ball skills are? This guy can cover but for his draft status he has some of the worst hands I’ve seen in a packer uniform since Ahmad carrol. His inability to make a play are getting covered up by wins.
I would have this guys doing ball drills 100% of the time in practice until his hands were bleeding.
Terrible…

Well, in my first game as a shareholder, we had some success. I think we should be thankful for all the gifts today. First, another win, the 12th of the season. Second, Baker Mayfield being confused about which guys to throw to.Thrid that the Browns didnt take Mayfield out and let someone just hand off fifty times. Fourth, that the refs were blinded by the flashing Twinkie lights. On a more serious note, the refs missed a ton of holding calls on the browns. The game should have been sealed earlier when Stokes was hit directly in the hands with another gift pick from Mayfield and dropped it with nothing but cheerleaders between him and the end zone. when was the last time Adams dropped two passes in the same series, one of them wide open and uncontested . The eight and ten yard cushions on pass recievers has to stop. And, who among you likes the new cut block calls being called on the defensive backs? So I guess they should just curl up and prepare to be pancaked on sweeps and screens. by a guy who weighs twice as much as they do. Hey, a win is a win, and with a little help from a couple teams, one more should get us the bye. GO PACK GO!!

I'm not about to criticize a defense too harshly that turned the ball over to our offense four times in one game. Historically, the team that wins the turnover battle wins the game and we did.

However, I will say that either the Browns have one tough running game or we need to address our run defense.

They did not play well on D at all and the Browns ran the ball down their throats but they wonnot playing their best game.. Look back at theupsets in this league folks. Heck just last week the Cards and the Bucs didn't play well and lost. At least we have 12 and won and that is what counts. Now lets fix the problem and move on. I still think we need a better D line outside of Clark and players that have a attitude. Lets win the next 2 games and get healthy and win it all..The D should be digusted with their play yesterday and the 2nd half O looked pretty day also. A win is a win!

La Fleur has his work cut out for him to have this team begin playing complete games Q1-Q4. And it better start this upcoming week against Minnesota. If they can accomplish that task and maintain it, the SB is theirs. If not, that’s when the wheels fall off this green and yellow bus!

The Packers have had some amazingly good luck this year - no better examples than the end of the Arizona and Browns games. The old adage that defense wins championships is still true, and the Packers defense doesn't come close. While I don't believe the Packers have the team to make it to the Super Bowl, this season has been amazing nonetheless. We still have at least three games left to enjoy Rodgers in green and gold, and I intend to enjoy each one.

I agree there are lots of holes in this team but I haven't seen any other teams that look so great either.
