Gut Reactions: Packers outlast Bengals

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers win over the Bengals.

  • That game was drunk
  • I have no idea what they thought they saw on film from the Bengals defense to make them come out and try to come out with tons of spread, but...no.
  • Mason Crosby had one of those days. Thankfully, he got to finally redeem himself.
  • De'vondre Campbell is not only exactly what the Packers needed from a physicality standpoint but from a football IQ standpoint. What a player.
  • The interior of the Bengals defensive line did a great job against the run.
  • Joe Barry actually called a pretty decent game - but that red zone defense is going to be an issue all year.
  • Why the Packers re-signed Aaron Jones so they could ignore him is beyond me.
  • Shoutout to Kingsley Keke, who did a great job making sure Burrow couldn't step up in the pocket on Preston Smith's sack.
  • I was told AJ Dillon couldn't catch?
  • No one ever expects a Big Dog screen.
  • Why do Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers hate having time outs?
  • Very much a survive-and-advance type game.
  • Go Pack GO.

No such thing as an ugly dub. I'll take it and expect to be 6-1 going into AZ. Hopefully Ja will be back by then.

Bad days happen, Mason. Shake it off.

Chase is going to be a stud. He already is. Way to hang in there secondary.

With my superior analytical abilities as a football fan, I couldn't help thinking that Mason Crosby should've been aiming a little more to the right.
(Rim shot.)
Maybe his shoe was untied, because he had so much trouble getting the game untied.
(Rimshot.)
As the saying goes (which I just made up), don't leave a football game in the hands of the kicker.
(Rimshot.)
Thanks folks, I'll be here all week.

I thought he may have been worried about the blocking on the right, so he tried to hit it a little left to compensate. based this on my vast kicking eperience 😬.

I'd be glad to know the names of the five people who downvoted me, to see if they are holding a petty grudge from past disagreements here at CHTV.
It's easy to snipe anonymously by casting downvotes for no good reason for a post that is obviously non-controversial.
It's one thing to disagree, another thing to take cowardly potshots while lurking hidden in the weeds.
Sometimes it seems that if I said the sky is blue that some would downvote me -- yet not have the honor of presenting themselves openly.
So please name yourself. Tell me why my comment was so disagreeable for you to cast a downvote. Then, perhaps, say whether you prefer a fan site where no one disagrees with you.
Otherwise, knock off the apparent displays of ill will that drag down good discussions.

For the record I gave a thumbs up and if I ever give a thumbs down (rarely) I'll normally respond why I did so. Anyways thanks for your comments!

Gee Whiz...

I was driving most of this one and listening, on Sirius, to Cincinnati's broadcasters and they were largely frustrated for big chunks of this game. Aside from really one play--the inexcusable Chase TD at the end of the half--they did a really nice job of keeping that offense in check. Subtract that long INT return and this game isn't even close.

When you're going to play a style of defense where you challenge teams to dink and dunk for scores, you can't be settling for FG attempts on offense or those kinds of mistakes cost you football games. Packers can't be kicking that many FGs on the road and hope to win. They've got to be putting those into the endzone.

Still...beat up team, hard-fought win on the road.
1-0 this week.

Please: no more "Mason Crosby for the HOF" articles. Holy Jinxapotamus...

If Savage is able to get his hand an inch lower, we'd be talking about the great pass breakup to end the half. He had excellent coverage, and Chase made a great catch. Chase'll be a star by the end of the year.

Woooo! Welcome to your weekly group cardio session called "sitting on the couch watching the Packers game!" Actually, I think I got my steps in for the day, back and forth over that 10 foot spot in front of the big screen.

I am willing to give the Packers O some leniency being down 3 linemen, but the gameplan and red zone garbage seemed to forget the fact that they were DOWN 3 OFFENSIVE LINEMEN including 2 all pros.

And Mason we still love you. We burned the sage for that last one for you. Well, I didn't have sage, I sprayed the Pumpkin Spice room spray and cleared the air for ya.

And a question: The D gave up 90 yards to the Bengals running backs. Are they not that bad or is it just so easy to pass on the Packers that teams give up on the run?

"The D gave up 90 yards to the Bengals running backs. Are they not that bad or is it just so easy to pass on the Packers that teams give up on the run?"

Probably the fact that they mostly played from behind factored into that decision. That and the fact that Burrows has Chase.

theyve been good against the run compared to the last few seasons. campbell, the resurgence of kenny clark has helped that. but the biggest factor is not playing dime every single play. pettine was a fucking idiot for doing that, and joe barry is proving that each week. play 3 down lineman, and let your dbs cover. you might give up more big plays, but your gonna give up big plays anyway. at least with the pressure and the aggressiveness up front, you have the chance to cause a negative play yourself. so much better than the slow bleed of mike pettines dime BS.

Right idea, bad form. He should have tried to deflect the ball with right hand, and wrap left arm around WR. But I don't hold it against him, as it's easy to sit back with beer in hand and say what should happened via slo-mo. Also, he was aggressive, and he simply missed judged the ball. I actually find it amazing the completely whiffed on contact with the ball.

fast play. he wont make that mistake again. idk if he was close enough to do the "jaire" and wrap around with one hand and swat with the other, but from my vantage point of my couch, it looked like he good of used 2 hands. it is kind of crazy he missed that completely.

Missing my point- he flew in without body control and poor form & not processing the situation quickly enough to make a better decision on how to handle that moment.

He has such potential, just needs to harness it.
Am sure Gray is making this a teachable moment.

Just wish he was further along - but Collins took time to match athleticism to football IQ room

& better a teachable moment after a W than a L!

Well, it's a W.
I couldn't watch it till the very end -- I'm in the Philly area, so FOX had the Birds game here --Eagles won a wild one), but I was watching that, and following the play-by-play of the Pack. Absolutely crazy - and I need to watch highlights asap.

Is it just me or did it look like Cobb had first-down yardage on 3rd-and-16? I thought he did. What a throw -- but a dangerous one from Rodgers there. And who else could backfoot a dart in the middle of the field with all that traffic and throw a strike...and why were Adams and Cobb so close together there? I only saw three plays, and already that many questions...I'm not sure I wouldn't have tried to run on 4th-and-1, but thank God the real Mason Crosby showed up at the end.

G,P, G...and Campbell has been huge for this D.

"I'm not sure I wouldn't have tried to run on 4th-and-1, but thank God the real Mason Crosby showed up at the end."

With the review we went back and forth on that one, and Wayne and Larry were both looking for the Packers to snap the ball rather than try to get the Bengals to jump, but they weren't great in short yardage today, and I thought you had to try to win. If you go for it and fail, I think Cinci pulls it out. If you go for it and get the first, you've still got to score...

I was initially in favor of going for it with a sneak, but on second thought decided that bringing Crosby in was the right decision, as it showed confidence in him to win it. Going for it may have worked, but then you're telling Crosby "We don't trust you to win it for us anymore." Crosby had to get back onto that horse ASAP.

Crosby needed this - in order to exorcise any doubts in his own mind. It's squashed now. done. move on.

Well, since Fox and the NFL decided to switch over to another game w/ the 2 minute warning and Crosby about to kick (again) I had to wait for the update to see the winning kick. I figured MC had made it before Fox (finally) showed it as they previously said, "For those of you who finished watching the Packers/Bengals game..." and I knew the only way the game was over was if Crosby hit it. Glad to see it was right down the middle.

Oh here comes your victim bullshit after trashing Fox. See if you had a brain in your head you might understand how the NFL has tv markets. It's why you see on this site the tv coverage available for the game. The NFL and Fox have the featured Americas Game of the Week. There fore they show the late game in its entirety. Regional markets got to see the ending. And for your information pay attention when ABC has the featured game of the week, they switch the game also.

Yes, exactly. It’s all about ratings and sponsors. They switch out to the larger market games to satisfy the sponsors for those games while the smaller markets get screwed. The fact that they stay with the game in Canada proves my point. They know that the Canadian viewers represent a small percentage of their viewership so they can meet their agreement with their Canadian sponsors.
But in the US they can switch from game to game whenever they choose in order to maximize their viewership and ratings. Thanks, Since ‘61

This is exactly right.

I, along with many others, had to watch the Jets-Titans overtime game and miss the first quarter of the Packers-49ers or Packers-Steelers. Why? Because it was a NY team. Larger market and more revenue dictates which overtime games get covered and others don't.

Since '61 probably remembers the NY Jets-Oakland Raiders "Heidi" game. It was a programming decision failure then as it continues to be now. Green Bay usually gets screwed in those decisions.

Same as after last game - a win is a win. We played a little better defensively that I thought that we would - we also played poorer offensively than I thought that we would. That being said - we did play without 3 starting Olinemen and one of our best stretch the field receivers in the league. We played without our shut down corner and Mr Reliable was Mr Unreliable but thankfully he was given the extra chance to redeem himself - and How Often Does That Happen - usually never. So probably the only good thing about this game is that we didnt put anything good on tape for the other team to scheme against us or to shut us down.

"A pass receiving Dillon is a very dangerous man". -- goes to show you that experts are not always right. Another case in point is Stokes. He is said to be prone to PI fouls. But he has been very good at that so far.

"We left way too many points off the board"-- No kidding.

"Last point is a respect post that Chase is a special dude." -- Chase is special, and his QB is also special. Looks like Cinci is in for a decade or more of plus 500 seasons.

I do not recall people saying that Dillon couldn’t catch, just that he hadn’t and thus he wasn’t credited with that skill. The Packers scouts identified that he could and that’s something to credit them for, as is the fact that Nijman could be trained.

Holy high school football - that was quite the game! I thought the D played with great effort - although not always with great results. Still an A for effort. I am seeing greatness in Stokes - although he allowed some catches (which were nearly all contested). Also an A for the nearly all rookie and second-string O-line. Some of the failed plays were strictly on Rodgers and questionable play-calling. Not concerned about Crosby. We all have a bad day - except his are particularly rare (and obvious). Still on his last field goal - it was apparent that he made the appropriate adjustment. So next...!

A big win pulled out, but where are Rodgers and the team without Adams. I know, they won games without Adams before, but the amount of relying on Adams is out of control.
Cobb was clutch, but he isn't Adams.

On a day when lots of folks were picking the Packers to lose on the road, they found a way to win. It was ugly. It was a way.

Say what you want about Kevin King. He is clearly the third-best CB on this team. When he goes off the field you also can clearly see that he IS the third best CB on this team.

I don't get the Stokes doubters. By the time we get to the play-offs he will be a veteran. If there is a healthy Alexander playing on the opposite side of the field then I think this is going to be a secondary that scares people.

Somewhere between the snapper, the holder and the kicker, 10 points were left on the field. Maybe it was all Crosby, but I'd like an expert opinion on that one.

No Bakh, no Jenkins, no Meyers, no problem. OK, not NO problem, but they survived. That is pretty damn incredible.

I think I really don't like seeing St. Brown on the field. My God man, at least block.

This backfield is loaded. Jones, Dillon, Cobb, Tonyan, Big Dog, and yes, even Little Rodgers and Lazard could contribute. Spread. The. Ball. Around.

Go with Taylor. What is the downside? He is active anyway. We can’t elevate EQ again without giving him a roster spot anyway, but I’d dearly like to know why we have 3 times already. He isn’t worth the spot it’ll the snaps to date.

If we do promote, use that for ST purposes based solely on ST acumen (coverage or kick protection).

Not an expert - but I was a kicker in university. Crosby had just one of those days that he was just - ever so slightly - missing his normal contact point. We all saw that all of his missed kicks were hooking to the left - which means that his contact point was slightly off-centre - right. Sometimes it is due to a compromised leg swing (due to tightness or an injury) or an abnormal hold. However, I was closely watching the holds - after his missed convert - and they all looked fine to me. By Crosby's last field goal it appeared that he had made the minuscule adjustment - thereby kicking it straight and dead centre. I fully expect that he'll be back to his usual reliable and accurate self by the next game.

Hmmm. Crosby missed all three FG attempts to the left. I wonder if the right side of the blocking unit is still allowing lots of penetration? Hmmm. I'd say so.

I've noticed that quite a few of his field goals have had a left post bias this year. Something mechanical or sub-conscious due to a rt. side blocking weakness? I think both are plausible.

This is one of those voodoo games for Crosby (and the team) where a lot goes wrong no matter how hard you try. (BUF 2014, SEA 2014...) Lots of unnecessary ugly plays, but a W is a W.

My gut reactions:
1. Perseverance pays off. The defense never gave up.
2. Please resign Campbell. He is a beast & makes punishing hits. It's so nice to see a MLB who can tackle & be most everywhere.
3. Please resign Big Dog (either as a TE or coach). He magnifies the heart and soul of this team and an integral part of our success. Father Time has slowed him, but he just keeps making important gritty plays.
4. Please do something about the red zone and extra 2-point defense. It's almost guaranteed points for our opponents.
5. And please don't tell me how great is Mason Crosby is (missed extra point & 3 missed field goals - horrendous). He's had great stretches, but he's had some major stinkers in his career.

Accurate. They don't have to re-sign Lewis because he is under contract for 2022 already. However, the chance that he is on the team next year is very low. His blocking has not been that good this year in terms of consistency.

I want to thank Mason Crosby for ending this torture a minute before our game was possibly switched to the late afternoon one on national TV.

Other than the kickers, this was a really good game. And refreshingly flag-free--only 4 in total.

Life with AR is going to be tough when it happens. You have to give the man credit for making the big throws when it matters regardless of the off-season follies.

Once again, can't heap enough praise on Campbell, Adams, and Dillon.

No Alexander? No problem! So the alarmists can rest easy for another week....

Barry: Needed to bring some pressure at the end of the first half; anytime the QB has that much time, bad things are usually going to happen. Chase had enough time to take the scenic route to the end zone.

Bengals: Don't know if they're a playoff team yet, but they have a pretty nice foundation. And Hilton, Hendrickson, and Awuzie were solid free agent signings.

Can't agree with that one. Chase - 6 Higgins - 5 Boyd - 4. Nice distribution of the ball. The Packers couldn't just take away Chase. Especially after King went down, but even before, the Packers were outmatched by these three v. their assigned defender. They moved the ball really well against the Packers. I think Alexander being out definitely hurt.

Both Higgins and Boyd were held in check yardage-wise, and I think Chase was going to be tough to stop anyway. Now Yiadom did give up the two-point conversion to Higgins; that might have been able to be stopped, but it was a pretty good throw, so I don't know. Overall, the secondary held up enough for us to win the game multiple times, until we finally did.

I was really impressed with the O line missing both Myers and Jenkins. They did a pretty decent job against the pass rush and in the run game. That was not a certainty going in. Patrick has done bad snap, but seemed to help in the run game. LT 3 and C 3, novice guards. That’s a good outcome on the afternoon.

Keke did indeed have a nice play, but again did not play the run very well.

Lowry played pretty well.

Slaton with 2 QB hits. I noted some interior pressure but didn't pick up the number. Guess it was Slaton.

Stokes is going to be fine, I think. I will stop wishing Newsome had fallen a little bit more.

Need more than Adams dominating and Cobb chipping in (along with Dillon) in the passing game. GB got nothing from Lazard, Amari and ESB. Indeed, the thought of Lazard as the #2 WR is not pleasant.

A win is a win. Bears and Washington coming up. Need to get to 6-1 as the schedule gets tougher after that. GPG

Cardinals. Chiefs. Rams. Ravens. Those four games left on the schedule look like the real challenges right now. If the Packers can split those and not play down to the rest of their competition, then this is a three-loss team. Call me optimistic, but that is within the realm of possibility.

What i find most amazing is the depth that they had to use in the secondary. That's my gut reaction.

Also, sometimes you get a lot of bad rolls (MC missed FGs). The hold on the last two or three looked good too. Given the look on the first miss, I think there might have been something wrong with the ball position.

This was much closer than I thought it would be, and the reason is because we left so many points on the field We’d stop ourselves in the red zone and then blow the FG. IMO, we should have been well over 30 and none of this late game drama happens.

Aaron Jones long run should have won the game for us. So should some of Crosby’s kicks. So should Campbells pick. It’s like “the stake is in place, drive it in”. And we’d smash our knuckles instead. Over and over.

A super entertaining game. The 22 points we were stuck at is one of 4 times we’ve been at 22 or lower since the start of the 2020 season, 23 games in all. The 25 points puts some lipstick on it, but it’s still a pork chop. Not a good game for the offense, or Mason Crosby, but good enough to win.

Defense played well overall, but had some enormous breakdowns. Savage could have prevented the long TD by focusing on a tackle instead of making a play on the ball,. The long drive against us in the 4th quarter was one of worst defensive drives this season. But overall, the defense stopped a lot of drives ( and it helped that the Bengals couldn’t kick straight).

I saw you write this in the watch party thread. I think the ball grazed Savage's arm. He was there to make the pass breakup. Suggesting that he consciously decide to forego making the pass breakup and allow the catch while focusing on the tackle is a bend but don't break philosophy of a very high order.

Cincy had two timeouts left. Chase caught the ball at the GB 25 roughly. I don't think it is the right decision to just make the tackle even given the situation. Of course, the 25 makes it a 42 yard field goal. The missed field goal debacle had not yet manifested in this game.

Oh well. We disagree again.

Disagreeing is fine. I’m a big “freedom of choice” guy, so I accept that people , including me, will make the wrong choice…😁

MY WAY, that touchdown doesn’t get scored on that play. Worst case scenario is that he catches it, or I’m called for interference. Still time for them to take another shot or two at the end zone, or kick a FG. Or maybe they turn it over, or take a penalty, or miss the kick. I don’t know, but I do know that they will not score on that play. Best case scenario is that I hit him well enough to prevent the completion.

YOUR WAY, the best case scenario is you prevent the completion, but if you don’t, you’ve given up a TD. Nobody else can stop him if you don’t.

If I wanted to be uncharitable towards Savage (who I like), I’d call this Hero Ball. You’re trying to make a big play but you end up hurting the team. Without that touchdown, all this late game/OT stuff doesn’t happen.

The percentage play there was for Savage to play the man and not the ball. Prevent the TD.

Would love to see Kylin Hill in Back Field in the Red Zone.

QB12 lock onto Adams is way too predictable. He passed up (again) other options to move the chains. IMO

King actually played pretty damn well in this game. He was aggressive to the receiver and made a few really nice tackles on those quick passes for minimal gain. He gave up the one comeback route and then got banged up when he was kicked in the chest/shoulder by Boyd but all in all he had a nice game.

Five missed field goals in the last however many minutes breaking a record 30 year-old NFL record.

An estimated 96 instances of the Lord's name being taken in vain in my general vicinity breaking some sort of record, I think.

JHFC, look at Mason Crosby showing us all what resiliency looks like.

If the Jazz keep relying on the pick and roll with Stockton and Malone, they'll never get anywhere.

Dean Lowry makes a lot of plays for an overpaid slug.

Another week of a MacGyvered O-line getting it done.

Cobb had better stop taking snaps away from Amari Rodgers and get hurt so we can all say "I told ya so!"

There's a lot of talk about what this team isn't and what it doesn't have. I like these guys. That's a gritty bunch of mofos right there.

For those of you that were around in 1968 you may remember the Heidi Game or Heidi Bowl. Oakland scored two touchdowns in the final minute of the game to beat the visiting NY Jets. But NBC cut off the game to East Coast viewers to watch the movie Heidi and viewers missed the last few minutes. Now, over 50 years later, it happened again to us East Coast viewers. While measuring to see if it was a first down, they cut to the Giants Cowboys game. I had to run to computer to see who won then to Youtube to see the winning field goal. Like, WTF!!!

Oh and one more thing. Watching Mason's field goal misses remined me that I have to get to the driving range and work on my golf hooks.

Not only no MLB but Lowry was alone in the middle and quickly did his matador impression and stepped aside to let Burrow go by. Lowry knocked down a couple of passes, he does make a play or two every once in a while, but overall he's terrible. He's usually either pushed backward, sideways, or flattened. One play was almost comical, the lineman opposite him simply backed up and Lowry fell on his face to the ground. Play Slayton.

That’s the play design. When you have a QB that can run simply spread 5 out wide. The MLB needs to get width to help quick slant to the three receiver side. If he has too much width which he probably would if film study doesn’t show any qb draw on short yardage situations.

To counter this the defense would play 2 man. Great in theory but vulnerable to a big play if D backs can’t stay on their man. This was probably the best play call. It gives the D a chance later (live to play another down).

Although a different athlete entirely you all probably remember what happens in man on a short yardage situation where a stupid play call resulted in a touchdown right before half time of thr NFCCG. That time they didn’t live to play another down.

*Ditto for the O Line

On to Chicago

I keep seeing everyone’s concern that the offense is relying so much on Davante that they are really worried. However a couple of factors at play people aren’t taking into account. As most probably noticed during the first handful of drives, the team tried to see how Cincinnati would react. This was essentially to determine if the young offensive linemen could handle Cinci D line one on one. If you pay attention the team, almost exclusively, has had tight formations using either Lazard and/or Tonyan lined up tight to formation. This is intended to disrupt the pass rushers rush. Most would agree this has been very effective (See Bosa, Watt, Cincinnati). However this comes at a price. This ultimately means the player chipping or disrupting the defensive linemen’s get off will probably be a none factor for many of the 5 and 7 step drop passing plays. It also makes the defenders job a lot easier in coverage.

The team has seemingly thrown the ball to Davante and Cobb with more and more running back routes being peppered in more out of necessity not desire. MVS is hurt, Tonyan and Lazard are doing the dirty work. It could and probably should be pretty much concluded that once Bahktiari and Jenkins are back the offense will operate the way it should for the first time. Those two linemen will practically improve the offense overnight with an improved run game, being able to use 4 and 5 targets/ routes on passing plays and obviously the two also feed off one another.

When considering this, I’m personally very excited about the season up to now. The team will have the depth and experience it didn’t possess last year when Bahk went down in the playoffs. They’re 4-1 with a good chance to get to 5-1 while effectively playing as if they are handcuffed.

If someone said during the summer this team would be without 4 pro bowlers, MVS, Kevin King through the first six games but only have one loss you’d call them an idiot. I think the fact Rodgers, Adams and the D keeping the team in position to win 4 of 5 with those odds stacked against them makes me excited to think how this team will play around week 8-9. Makes me think people should appreciate how special of a player Rodgers really is.

Great post on all points, especially how the injuries have been to key players but the others are getting the job done. And Rodgers? You are a brave man to speak the truth about such a great player. Expect to get slammed but I for one know you are right.

we are still leaving to many points on the field in spite of the field goals attempts and misses today.. Not enough touchdowns and to many field goals.. This Offense still needs a number 2 receiver and yes I know we miss MVS but some of the receivers just have a hard time getting open.. Great win on the road against a very good team and the only problem I have is in that TD before the half... where was the pressure that they had all day????? prevent? yikes and we need to pick it up in the red zone on D.. FIX IT

When considering two all pro linemen are missing we need to recognize some huge factors handicapping this team.
-Reduces ability to run the ball as effectively.
- Lazard and Tonyan chipping the End greatly reduces the impact their route will have on route combinations and ability to impact on 5 and 7 step drops
- Lafluers offense is based on run plays and pass plays appearing similar which all but ensures those players won’t be as impactful in the box score.

Those two linemen have forced the team to run an incredibly generic and handcuffed offense up to this point. Rodgers isn’t playing favorites, he’s throwing the ball so well that even though the D coordinator has Adams doubled and Cobb bracketed both are still impacting the game. In three or four weeks the Packers offense will open up so much Mario al pundits will talk about how on fire the team is. No they will just be running their offense the way it’s designed for the first time.

Don’t get me wrong Davante is a very talented wr but the kind of throws Rodgers is being asked to make into double coverage and with a slow Cobb not getting separation is incredible.

The team hasn’t improved from week one. They simply understood the new replacements at o line wouldn’t hold up like Bahk and EJ. The evidence of this was the first 20 plays of the game where Lafluer wanted to see if the players could hold up and run their offense the way it was designed since this was the first time not going against all world End (Watt Bosa) or elite D line (Pittsburgh). The answer was a resounding no!

These national pundits who don’t watch the game aren’t capable of providing genuine feed back. The narrative is stupid and it’s actually irresponsible to think Rodgers simply didn’t give a shit. Or the team has regressed. Just because O linemen don’t show up on the stat sheet doesn’t mean they don’t have a massive impact on a game or the team

maybe the spread at the beginning was because of the patchwork front line that for most of the game got stuffed trying to run block. and those timeouts, in my estimation, were not wasted, they were taken with the offense knocking on the door on a late down late in each half and probably Cincy showing a defense that GB had not seen. So I say it is wise to step back and try to put the game out of reach so that it won't matter how many time outs you have.
