Gut Reactions: Packers hold on for the win over Chargers

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers win over the Chargers

  • I'm not sure I'd call it a "big" win, but it beats losing.
  • Extremely happy to see the return of the Lambeau Leap.
  • That shot of Aaron Jones on the cart absolutely wrecked me.
  • There's really never a time I feel like I have a full understanding of what this team is trying to accomplish on either side of the ball.
  • The Chargers handed the Packers this game with all of their mistakes but they say you never apologize for winning so I'm going with that.
  • Jayden Reed is the man.
  • The revolving door at left tackle is giving me a headache.
  • Congrats to Jordan Love on his first 300 yard game. First time for a Packers QB since 2021.
  • Romeo Doubs just catches touchdowns.
  • Jonathan Owens needs to stop playing pattycake and tackle someone.
  • Dontayvion Wicks made up for his drop with a man's run after the catch later.
  • I feel like LaFleur letting Carlson attempt a 52 yarder is a good thing long term but the rookie definitely seems to be hitting the rookie wall.
  • Valentine got so, so lucky there at the end.
  • AJ Dillon was running hard as hell as the last running back standing.
  • Really happy to see them close the game out but I just can't with this defense.
  • Jordan had a number of really nice throws but he has to hit that one to Musgrave up the left sideline.
  • Short week. Gotta enjoy this one.
  • Go Pack Go.

OK. It’s a win.

Too much pressure on Love, too many clean pockets for Herbert, and no contain at all when Herbert got out of the pocket. Not a great combo. If Bosa had been playing…

It was kind of a question of whose DBs were going to be worse. And whose receivers would drop more balls.

Dontavion Wicks. There you go, bud.

I think this Bosa is a bit overrated. Him leaving the game isn't what gave the Packers the win, it was the Chargers Offense that gave it away.

Good perspective, 13TC, let's not make too many excuses for actually winning a game.
We beat an NFL team with a record better than ours; no need to beat our chests, but it would be sad if we didn't savor the victory.

That is also true to an extent.
********************
I find it entertaining that a guy makes one catch, and someone compare's him to Jeremy Shockey. Really?

I'm sorry...lol
It was a nice catch and gain. Kudos

But Shockey?

I don't know what it is, but why do we crown players so quick?
Doesn't anyone have to prove themselves anymore?

I can remember Packer fans walking around with chubbys, praising and crowning Brett Hundley after winning the MVP of the 2015 pre-season.

I doubt it, but it seemed like i was the only person rolling his eyes at the time....it was flipping pre-season!!

Is Love now the next Favre /Rodgers....?
Am i going to compare him to Brady, Montana?
F no!!
He had a nice game, good for him, good for us.
But he hasn't proven anything.
He proved he had a nice game against the L.A. Chargers.
He had a nice game against the Bears.
He had a nice game against the Falcons.

Will i be more impressed if he throws over 300 yards and 2 or 3 TD's against the Lions and Chiefs?

You bet your a......

Just saying.

I'm with you, SCJim.
Why not enjoy the little bits of progress by the Packers, especially wins?!
We actually had a remarkable game-winning drive today, and our defense backed that up with not one, but two stops of a potent Chargers offense.

It's always great for the simple pleasures of smalltown Green Bay to triumph over the garish glitz of California -- that is, if one prefers Bedford Falls to Potterville for a wonderful life.
***
A big part of Lombardi's first season as head coach of the Packers was finishing with wins on the West Coast against the 49ers and Rams -- which meant a record of 7-5 instead of 5-7.
Though the Packers didn't make the playoffs that season, by finishing strong they set themselves up for a trip to the NFL Championship Game in 1960 against the Eagles, in which they fell just nine yards short.
Then a legendary two titles in a row and five in seven years for the rejuvenated Packers. Who saw that coming for the forgotten and forsaken losers in an icily remote industrial town of upstate Wisconsin?
It's always a good time to start a culture of excellence, determination, perseverance, and winning football.

Good win! I'll take it. It's good to see the Packers finally win one of these close low scoring games. For a while I was concerned that missed extra point was going to cost the Packers another game. Defense made a stop after the Packers took the late lead. Too many penalties again but the Packers were able to overcome them. Short week before the upcoming Lions game. Go Pack Go! Our QB does create a lot of drama with his long arching throws such as that suspenseful pass for a winning touchdown to Doubs. Will the ball make it to the receiver before the defender catches up? I'm guessing our receivers have learned they can't wait for the ball, but have to be ready to reach back to snatch it out of the air.

Is it fair to say that Preston Smith is having himself a pretty good season?

Thanks to Nags for this quick column to set up fans up for the best kind of analysis: post-game. It's so much more fun to discuss with others what did happen just now rather than what might happen a little later.

For all of their follies and our frustrations, the Packers have made just about every game a close one, and if they continue to improve, could actually make the playoffs.

Regardless, a Sunday is so very much better with a Packers win! I don't want to think about the draft in 2024, but to focus passionately on getting as many wins as possible in 2023.

Open up the Playbook and let Love rip it!. No point in trying the 1st and nowhere run with Dillon. Get him out in space attacking the DBs as a receiver. It would be helpful, if Jaire showed up for Primetime. Reed and Wicks know how to get open in the zones. Love will need to go to Kraft more than twice. He has to hit Musgrave up the sideline. Sanchez stated the obvious, not driving the ball, throwing off the back foot. These WRs can put on a show in Detroit, if LaFleur can figure it out?

MLF needs to open up the play book more. Reed, Wicks and, even Heath are the real deal let’s set them free. Dobbs and the two tight ends do a good job as well. Still not sold on Watson. And Joe Barry you need to pack your bags your scheme is not good enough.

Good for Jordan Love and the Packers offense. They really are STARTING to grow up a little bit. Yes, I know the Chargers defense sucks. BUT, it's much like the Joe Barry defense so it's going to suck.

I REALLY hope that wasn't Aaron Jones last game at Lambeau Field as a Packer. NOT the way I EVER wanted to see him leaving Lambeau.

Valentine has been pretty good this season but WTF was he doing on that drop by Johnson. He needs to send Johnson a good bottle of scotch as a thank you, and for Johnson to help him forget that play.

I wonder if Simone Biles can play Defense BETTER than her Hubby Jonathan Owens.

Thank GOD we got Wicks and Reed. I still like Doubs but I'm NOT liking Watson much at all these days.

Taylor Kraft's catch & run down the sideline was pretty. Too bad he didn't score but I loved the effort and he's got some wheels!

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody here at CHTV. Lets hope Thursdays game is a good one. As long as they give EFFORT like THIS, I can deal with the outcome...This season! GPG!

I'd be happy with Goodson, Robinson, or Taylor.
After tantalizing us with some dazzling runs in preseason of 2022, I'd be excited about "The Tyler Goodon Experience" if he's available -- although perhaps pass blocking is a concern.
***
A good change in the game today was about five end-arounds to wide receivers.
Not only can those break for big plays -- a la Jayden Reed's opening touchdown -- but they would seem to add to the illusion of complexity on offense so as to make our other plays more effective.

I have a different take on Watson than most. I believe he has been drawing much attention from the defenses, with top CBs playing him on many occasions. The Packers have constantly tried to run him on a fly or some sideline pattern deep, and the timing has just not been right, or the ball underthrown. I like what they did today designing him into a crossing pattern, running away from coverage. Beautiful!! And a confidence booster! I'd like to see more of the short hooks and digs, with an occasional go pattern off of these to keep the defense guessing. Let's remember he was injured in training camp and the beginning of the season. Give him time. Meanwhile, I too am thrilled with the play of Reed, Wicks, Doubs, and Musgrave lately!

Likewise, Christian's blocking has been better than most, and was partially responsible for Reed's big gain on the 1st reverse. If Watson had the same blocking on his reverse, I believe we would see similar results. One thing for sure, EVERY TEAM now knows we have multiple game breakers developing which may force more zone schemes for weaker teams. Go Pack!

They achieved near everything that was hoped for against the team that achieves in giving other teams what they hope for.

This will be deemed cruel, but losing AJ might be a what MLF needs.

I feel compelled to say there was progress, and there was with the youth.

As big as some plays were for GB, the Chargers saved them with some huge bad plays, keeping at least 14 points off the board, and changing the outcome.

Carlson needs to do much better.

Still, both teams try really hard to stand in their own way.

The Packers have beaten both teams from LA. Yet, there are those who want to moan about the wins. A lucky win is better than a heroic loss any day. It seems that Watson is not going to be given the title of #1 receiver anymore. That if he wants the title, he's going to have to earn it. Could Jayden Reed by Deebo Lite? Or at least someone similar to Wes Welker? What I wanted to see was more improvement from the offense. There was improvement. I'm happy. Now, on Thursday, with what used to be a tradition, Lions and Packers. Hopefully, the Lions are doing their usual late season swan dive, while the Packers hopefully can go on a run. Why not?

Thumbs up, ricky.
In my opinion, Watson can be very valuable even if he isn't the main receiver for the Packers as far as volume.
He stretches the defense, and can make the big play.
We want to see him more involved, but it would be nice if we had three or so wide receivers getting in on the action of catching passes.
There'll be plenty of balls to go around if the Packers continue to hone their offense.

Correct - and I seem to recall - and rather recently - some comments about a fellow named MVS - Keep playing him - keep practicing him - the drops will stop and the fighting for the ball will improve - and then we will have the full complement. And you cant teach SPEED but you can coach its use.

It's way too early to give up on Watson; what it is time for is ongoing encouragement for him and any other Packer who has promising talent and is competing hard.

This young offense might be starting to grow up. Love, Reed, Wicks, Musgrave, Watson and others are starting to stack some successes. The defense is still a question mark although they rose up when they had to today. The Charger stars (Allen and Ekler) gifted the Packers a couple of huge mistakes and the Packers were good enough to take advantage and grab the win.

On to Detroit. GPG

It's a big win for this team....I know one thing: "progress" while winning is a heck of a lot better than progress when not.

That being said, we did get some help from the butterfinger-ed Chargers receivers. The one in the end zone was one of the worst I've ever seen.

Our receivers and TEs are getting it done with both blocking, catching, and in Reed's case, running. Also a pretty heroic effort by Kraft to stay within the sidelines on that play--I'm glad to see him finally getting some more opportunities.

Yes, congratulations to Love for his big game--he really started out strong as far as accuracy goes. You're right, that pass to Musgrave later could have gone for a TD if it had been placed properly.

The only major qualm I had with the play-calling was the three straight runs to Dillon in the second-to-last drive. Please trust your offense to get that first down to salt away the game without the unnecessary drama to follow.

How about that NBA-style rejection by Clark at the end? He said, "Get that sh*t outta here!"

Instead of running Dillon into the line of scrimmage for no gain on third-and-6 very late in the game and at about midfield, and having to punt to the Chargers with them only needing a field goal to tie . . .
. . . why not roll Love out to the right with the option to pass or run for a first down to clinch the game, and at the worst to slide down inbounds to keep the clock running?
***
With Love rolling out to the right, and being reminded to throw the ball or to slide down inbounds within four seconds, there's little chance of him getting hit from behind and fumbling.
Also, a small loss if Love does slide down inbounds doesn't hurt our punting position, and keeps the time ticking away.
***
It worked with LaFleur playing it safe this time, but let's be a little more daring next time.

Love should roll out and perhaps run more often..that run is there on many plays...

I'd like to see more rollouts, too.
Even though it cuts off half of the field for targets, it seems that two receivers would be available -- with maybe a third receiver starting from the other side of the formation and going deep to the middle of the field.
Love gets a completion or runs for a few yards; or he can easily throw the ball away being well outside the tackle box without intentional grounding; or if time is a factor late in a game, he can slide down inbounds, forcing the other team to burn a timeout or allowing the clock to tick, tick, tick, tick. . . .

The difference was one team executed and the other dropped 3 game changing passes.

Kudos to the Packers who overcame the loss of Jones and Wilson to have only 1 RB for almost the entire 2nd half - hats off to AJ Dillon, who stayed upright and regularly made those 1-3 extra YAC (contact).

Goal kick protection is an increasing worry.

Watson worked the seam well (as did both TE's).

Love's deep balls are increasingly not getting underthrown - he's finally getting "my guy or no guy". That TD to Doubs was on the money.

Scheming Malik Heath (WR) to block Khalil Mack (yes, you read correctly) was a joke. MLF or Stenavich deserve some sort of punishment for whoever cooked that up. Resulted in a sack and near strip.

Packers DL had consistent pocket pressure and Herbert was lucky not to have gotten sacked 3 more times.

Open field tackling was better - although Owens showed why he's a ST and reserve-reserve safety..... that miss was comical.

Packers didn't shoot themselves in the foot with penalties.

All in all, <TL DR /> - the Chargers beat themselves, and the Packers didn't (this time). Love and Rookies getting better.

Not that we played error free, but man it was nice to see key mistakes made by the opponents for once.

Our vet injury bug just keeps on getting worse. Love Jones, that did not look good.

Our rookie WRs and TEs had a pretty good day. Hard not to have some hope for the group in the future.

Carlson had a bit of a yikes day and the weather is only going to worsen till the end of the season. Hope he can figure things out.

A victory at Lambeau...great for the fans finally...ill felt they would although I had to change from Beebe jersey to Nelson in the fourth quarter...thanks to the chargers for all the drops, I really do feel bad for Herbert being on that team going nowhere, he's a really good QB...maybe it will be Staleys last game...on to the Lions who squeaked one out today...the Packers wont be playing a team again this season with a defense ranked at 31 in the league...they already played the Broncos and they are 32....

Was that a run/pass option on 3rd and 6 at the end of the game? Why not let the QB try to win the game? Anyway, if Love ever stops underthrowing the deep balk and finds some more accuracy, he could be a good one.

Glad for the players and coaches they got a home win. They show that there’s something there just not yet. They aren’t very good but where does that leave the Chargers? Will Staley be fired tomorrow? I thought Herbert would carve them up, thanks for that big drop at the end going untouched for a td…but you catch some and you drop some, that’s sports. Keep on getting better is the only goal every game out.

Yes—no apologies for winning.
I like our receivers—need more Watson.
Love makes throws misses throws that make you scratch your head.
Owen’s is a train wreck.
Staley and LaFluer are the same guy.
The NFL must increase the teams roster size. Looks like the NFL mash unit.
We’ll take the Win.
Go get the Lions—the grabbed another sloppy win.
Go Packers!!!

I was interested be one of the D (I forget who) saying after the game that we know that D and it meant we can fool them. I think that’s a pretty good sign that the unevolved versions of that are obsolete. Unfortunately, as he said, we run a very similar one. N

I'm rooting for Jordan Love-beautiful pass to Doubs.
Jordan hasn't been given a real chance with the O-line, coaching and receiver issues.

Ok, finally some luck at the end to get this victory. There are a lot of not very good teams. Except for the Lions game and Chicago, the Packers could have won or lost all of them. Perhaps the Packers are turning the corner.

The next two games are probably losses, but the last five are all winnable. Let's see what they can do!

What I liked? The win.....not pretty, but, a w non the less. Love showing some grace under pressure at the end, a big come from behind for him The wide receiver group showed what could be today . Wicks Reed and Doubs are becoming a great trio. What I didnt like....the inconsistency on D.....I know we are banged up, but if not for a drop, this could have gone sideways . The kicking game, Last week a missed pat and then a kickoff out of bounds cost us.. if we lost today, we'd be having the same discussion The second to last possession. We needed a first down to salt it away, instead, three straight runs Love was on target today, let him get the first down so we dont kick it away again. The really bad? Injury to AJ, suddenly the rb position. is thin again short week to get well and head to Detroit , where for the second year in a row the "Motorcity Super Bowl" actually means something Good job today guys! GOPACKGO!

Has anyone else noticed that when the snap for a field goal is to the right shoulder side of the holder, the ball is not being placed square to the goal post and Carlsons approach lines up to the ball misaligned. the ball may be set down on the spot, but the angle of the approach is no longer true. perhaps he needs to scrap a straight line in the grass to get his approach aimed true to target direction?

I thought it was a good win. It was the most energy I’ve seen the packers display over 60 minutes this year.
I would like to see them play the Lions tougher than the last two times. If the bears can take them to the last minute, the packers should be able to do the same.
It must be hell to be a chargers fan. Maybe Staley could interview for our DC job next year.

I think the Lions will be a bit pissed off after two close games...could be brutal without a running game for the Packers...maybe not, teams can pass against the Lions to some degree...

Good win no matter what. Another week where the coaches finally discovered more ability in rarely used players and that we do have talent if actually used, and used correctly. Of course most was forced upon them due to injury but all I care is about evaluating and developing talent through game experience. Gee things like Kraft is more agile than as they slotted him as a blocking TE, Wilson is a great pass option that is faster than Dillon, and a change from Jones as well. Hopefully most of the cited coaches won't be here next year anyway.

Jordan Love was the next QB taken after Justin Herbert in the 2020 draft. This was the first time they played against each other. Love outplayed Herbert. Go Pack Go!

My statement was based on the boxscore. I found it interesting that Love had better stats considering all of the experience Herbert has. The kid has promise!

Justin Herbert was the 6th player picked in that draft. He was a universal top 10 pick. Even though he was picked 20 spots before Love, he is a fair measuring stick, though Herbert has more experienced and better weapons at his disposal.

First head to head match up, score one for J Love.

That works both ways, surely. On the day, yes Love did, though the difference was not the QBs. In itself, pretty decent endorsement of Loves outing today that he not only gave Herbert a run for his money but came out ahead today.

Just wish to thank Aaron for the point about Dillon. AJ deserves a lot of credit for his toughness, and whole lot of focus will be on him by Detroit next week. I REALLY like it when MLF gets Dillon out on passes, as he now punishes the DBs and requires 2 or 3 to bring him down.

On another point, I agree the Chargers dropped some passes here folks, but let's not forget the Packers were in (or near) field goal distance at least 3 times, with ensuing mistakes and sacks pushing us backward, thus leaving potential points on the field. Then, there was the missed connection between Love & Musgrave. So what's my point? The Pack was moving the ball much more frequently than the past, and thus gave themselves more opportunities. And, the defense was giving our offense more opportunities as well. I really liked the fight I saw in this team today. Improvements from many groups were demonstrated, and taking advantage of opponents mistakes is a nice turn.
