From the Press Box: Bruce Arians Speaks His Mind

The head coach of the Cardinals clears the air after his team kept hold of the No. 1 seed in the NFC on Thursday night.

This week's Thursday Night Football snorefest wasn't worth talking about but you know what was?

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians was a little upset that many pundits (and Vegas) picked the St. Louis Rams over his team.

On the one hand, good for him. Good for the media too because there wasn't much else to write about here, except maybe the Cardinal's mutant ability to win no matter who is at quarterback.

But you have to appreciate a guy who tells you what's on his mind, and Arians tends to do that. On the other hand, the Rams had just won two games in a row by a 76-0 combined score.

On the other, other, OTHER hand, those were games against Oakland and Washington, so that's not quite as impressive. On top of that, the Cardinals had recenly lost to Atlanta of all teams, so perhaps Arians isn't one to talk. None of this is to cover up the fact that I picked St. Louis in a recent pool, but more to....no wait, this is totally covering my rear end.

Ultimately, how any of us bought into St. Louis is a mystery. Their offense is not nearly as good as it looked against bad defenses (which Arizona is not) and their defense, while decent, has been inconsistent.

Regardless of why we did it, I'm glad it happened because any time we get a could to get irritated like that is worth the effort.

Speaking of irritations...

How Chicago Bears coach Aaron Kramer is still employed is another mystery, but his odd admission that he leaked a recent story about Jay Cutler's inability to check out of run plays is fascinating. We all know things like this get said, and we all see anonymous leaks come out of struggling teams all the time. So that's not surprising, nor is it a surprise that Cutler—not a fuzzy teddy bear by any means—might not be well loved by the staff that inherited him.

My question is, who do you replace him with? We watched as multiple teams fell apart this year and almost all of them lacked a quarterback half as good as Cutler. Even the Bears have more issues than Smokin' Jay, when it comes down to it. They've got one of the worst defenses in the NFL, a tough division and one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Also, they have one of the worst defenses in the NFL, in case I didn't mention it.

So you toss Cutler and then what? You'd better hope you do better on your next draft pick than you have in any quarterback pick since Jim McMahon. The Bears before Cutler were a quarterback wasetland, so jettisoning him had better be followed by a plan. And frankly, I don't trust management to have a plan much less execute it well.

Does that mean Cutler has to stay? By no means. Listen, if he won't listen to a coach who made guys like Rich Gannon relevent after years of medicority, and a guy who made Josh McCown more money in a season than he'd seen in years—well, Cutler might just not be coachable.

But you'd better have a Plan B, and it had better be a darn good one. Either way, something has to change—this team has too many offensive weapons to watch flounder around like incompetent loons.

Of course, Packers fans probably want Cutler to stay right where he is.

Speaking of Arians and the Bears...I was reading earlier today (I think on Grantland) that the Bears actually passed on Arians to hire Trestman...ha

Thank god the Bears will always be the Bears.

Impressed with the Cardinals determination and mental toughness. They epitomize Al Davis' " Just win, baby!" It's what the Packers are doing with more O weapons and a weaker D.

I don't know what all the hubbub is about. Trestman and Cutler are a fantastic combo for Chicago. They should both get contract extensions and raises. They need to lock-up that defensive squad for the next ten years, too.
