Former Packers President Bob Harlan passes away at 89
Harlan, who originally joined the organization in 1971, was elected President and CEO in 1989 and served as principal executive until his retirement in January 2008.

Former Green Bay Packers President and CEO Bob Harlan passed away Thursday, March 5, following a brief illness. Harlan was 89.
“The Packers family was saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Harlan,” said Packers President and CEO Ed Policy. “Bob was a visionary leader whose impact on the franchise was transformational. From his inspired hiring of Ron Wolf to turn around the club’s on-field fortunes to his tireless work to redevelop Lambeau Field, Bob restored the Packers to competitive excellence during his tenure and helped ensure our unique and treasured flagship NFL franchise was on sound footing for sustained generational success.
On the field, the Packers enjoyed a resurgence under Harlan’s guidance, posting the league’s best overall record, 152-88, from 1993-2007, and returning the Lombardi Trophy to Green Bay with a victory in Super Bowl XXXI. The successful period also included 13 straight .500-or-better seasons (1992-2004), an impressive accomplishment in the free agency era and the team’s best stretch since the 1930s and ‘40s.
Off the field, the crowning achievement of Harlan's tenure — the $295 million redevelopment of historic Lambeau Field — was ushered in at the beginning of the 2003 season and has stood as a key component of the team’s financial strength for ongoing success.
Harlan and his wife, Madeline, were deeply involved in the greater Green Bay community through the years, serving on many boards and donating time to many charitable causes. Both had been the recipient of multiple honors, both on a local and state basis, including Bob being honored three times by his alma mater, Marquette University, in 1997. In 2007, Harlan penned his autobiography, Green and Golden Moments: Bob Harlan and the Green Bay Packers.
It is impossible to overstate how important and instrumental Harlan was in the Packers 30+ years of success they have experienced after decades of futility.

There are not enough words to describe the class Mr. Harlan had and his contributions to the Green Bay Packers. How many other "owners" would take direct phone calls (wining or losing the prior game) and go house to house to ask for votes to assure the tax base was funded for Lambeau Field upgrades and have the confidence and backbone to give Ron Wolf full control of the on field decision making process that completely turned the franchise around.
I spent several years on the Board of the Association Of Information Technology Professionals and a few times over the years at large events across the country I had the Packers IT Director speak in reference to the current state of technology utilized by the Packers and the NFL and they were so well received. I would always write a thank you letter to Mr. Harlan for approving their attendance and every time I would receive the nicest letter in return.

Bob Harlan...
The man responsible for the most important hire in the Packer organization in the last 6 decades.
God only knows, what the Packers look like had Harlan not ever hired Ron Wolf as GM.
R.I.P.
Packer Nation salutes you.

Tremendous human being, I always like to note in discussions about Mr. Harlan that he graduated from Marquette University with a degree in Journalism. He served as Sports Information Director for Marquette from 1959-1965. From 1965 through 1971, Bob worked for the St Louis Cardinals baseball team, first as Director of Community Relations and then as Director of Public Relations. In 1971, he began his career with the Packers as Assistant General Manager.
For the next 18 years, Bob was promoted through the leadership ranks until he took the role of President and CEO. Not a bad career for a guy who really just wanted to tell stories.
Thanks for everything, Mr. Harlan.

Bob Harlan, Ron Wolf, Mike Holmgren, Brett Favre, and Reggie White were most responsible turning around 23 years of Packers' football futility.
And Mr. Harlan was responsible, directly or indirectly, for bringing the other four to Green Bay.
The Front Office has not been the same since his departure.
Truly one of the most underrated members of the Packer Organization.
Just an outstanding human being as well. He is and will be missed.

Back in 2006 I retired from the Air Force. Everyone in my squadron knew that I was a huge Packer fan, so as a retirement gift from the squadron, my 1st Sergeant tried calling the Green Bay Packers to see if they would fly an American flag over Lambeau Field in my honor. He was rejected twice, but the third time he called, Bob Harlan answered the phone. After my 1st Sergeant explained to him what he was looking for, Mr. Harlan agreed to the request. So, not only was a flag flown over Lambeau Field to honor me, but Bob Harlan wrote a wonderful letter thanking me for my service to our country and my continued dedication to the Green Bay Packers.
Thank you Mr. Harlan! The flag and letter still adorn my Packer room wall. It is such a precious gift!

I'm an old timer and attended games at City Stadium (change to Lambeau Field) when it open in 1957. Over all these years two men stood as pinnacles in the Packers organization and I had to good fortune to speak to both of these men in a few instances. The one wearing the Green and Gold was Bart Starr who was such a gentleman to an awe stuck kid, making him feel almost important. The other man was our CEO Bob Harlan who in my mind was essentially the architect of what we see in the modern day Packers. He led the effort to give us Lambeau Field and treated us fans so kindly. He even answered some of the calls personally that went to his office. He and Bart will go down in the history of the Packers as great men.

I would say next to Vincent T Lombardi Bob Harlan was the most important figure in the vast history of the Green Bay Packers . His hiring of Ron Wolf and leadership during the redevelopment of Lambeau Field were milestones in Packers history . I don’t think anyone else could’ve guided the organization better than Harlan during these critical times . He loved the Packers and the city of Green Bay . Thanks for your faithful service Mr. Harlan . May you rest in peace .

Perhaps you've heard the name Curly Lambeau. Maybe Don Hutson. Packers history didn't begin in 1960.

Curly Lambeau, Vince Lombardi, and Bob Harlan!
The Green Bay equivalent of the statue of U.S. Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima!
R.I.P. to the best there's ever been.

As a former Vietnam Platoon Commander I enjoyed the post. If you have not been to the Iwo Jima Monument and you get to go, count the hands on the flag, there is an extra hand, the word is that the sculptor added a hand because he thought "God must have had a hand in this too".

Harlan allowed the Packers to survive in its format and to continue on today.

Harlan 'changed' it's format.
Giving Wolf full control of football operations.
Which doesn't continue on to today.

It's ok, thanks for trying.

Thanks for trying, you will try anything to feel smart. I was talking about the survival of the Packers not the Harlan way of the Wolf thing. Give it up before even more foolishness comes out of you! Risible. The foundation Harlan set is still be used today!

It's difficult to imagine what the Packers would have been like without Bob Harlan. They may not even currently exist. IMO he saved the franchise, particularly with his hiring of Ron Wolf. From then on the Packers returned to NFL relevance.
If the Packers had a Mount Rushmore for non-players Bob Harlan would be on it along with Vince Lombardi, Curly Lambeau and Ron Wolf. Harlan did a superb job, was a great man and he will be missed and well remembered. What he did for the Packers will always be appreciated by Packer fans everywhere. R.I.P. Bob Harlan. Thanks, Since '61

I was born one month after SuperBow II, so I grew up during the stagnant 70s-80s Packer years. I never thought I would see a Packer championship. Then came Mr. Harlan.
From the bottom of my of my heart, thank you for restoring the team to the long-term greatness it has experienced. I’m forever grateful for your work. I’m proud to say I had the honor of shaking your hand. Great Packer legend and an even better man. RIP

Thanks for your vision Harlan.
