And away we go...

Offense

• Chad Clifton was pulled from yesterday's game due to ineffectiveness, but Daryn Colledge didn't help matters. The Packers struggled mightily running the ball to the left side of offensive line while Clifton was still in the game. Even when he left, Colledge still had his mistakes. He has a tough time latching onto the defender and seems to fight for position instead of fighting to push the defender backwards.
• Kudos for the play call to run off left tackle on Bulaga's first play from scrimmage. It's like they were trying to catch the Bills off guard by thinking Clifton was still in the game. Bulaga sealed nicely and the result was a 4-yard gain.
• Jermichael Finley wasn't the only one taking advantage of 1-on-1 match-ups. Rodgers hit Driver on the second possession of the game when he was lined up against converted defensive end Chris Kelsey. Too easy.
• If you get a chance to see new running back Dimitri Nance's first carry as a Packer, you'll see a case of happy feet. Way to much shuffling, just make a cut and go. He did much better on his second carry. I'd be nervous too on my first play at Lambeau Field.
• On the bubble screen to James Jones where he was tackled short of the goal line, Jermichael Finley needs to sell the threat he's a receiving target. He did his job as a blocker, but his body language told any defender looking at him that he's not going to get the ball on that play. The Bills cornerback read the play nicely and tackled Jones.
• The play action fake was very effective for the Packers, especially in the third quarter on back-to-back plays. On second-and-3 (very easily a running down), Rodgers faked run and found Jordy Nelson wide open for a 15-yard gain and a first down. On the very next play on first-and-10 (another running down), Rodgers again used the play action on a rollout and found Finley making is way across the middle from the far side of the field for a 22-yard gain.
• James Jones just can't seem to turn the corner and become a premiere play-maker. He very easily could have turned a good day into a great day if he avoids a couple miscues. His touchdown was nice, but he also had a fumble that was lucky to be recovered by Brandon Jackson. And while it's tough to blame Jones for being out of bounds on two first half catches along the sideline, having a little more sideline awareness could have been the difference between a field goal and a touchdown.
• Did you notice Jordy Nelson go in motion to a fullback position on the offensive play in which the Packers didn't kneel down?
• Donald Lee only has 1 catch for -1 yard through two games so far. I was impressed with Lee in training camp and thought might have a bounce back season, but he's barely been involved in the passing game at all.

Defense

• There were six plays in which the Packers brought either six or seven players in pass rush. Here's what happened on those six plays:
  • Cullen Jenkins sack.
  • Charles Woodson pass interference penalty.
  • Clay Matthews quarterback hit on Trent Edwards.
  • Sam Shields tackles receiver short of the first down.
  • Matthews sack.
  • Morgan Burnett interception.
• The Packers used the nickel on a majority of their defensive snaps I tracked including penalty plays, 37 of 56 snaps. I broke the two nickel packages down into "Big Nickel" with A.J. Hawk on the field and "Little Nickel" with Brandon Chillar on the field. Big Nickel was used on 24 plays, while Little Nickel was used on 13 plays (including the last 4 defensive plays of the game). Typically, Big Nickel included Ryan Pickett on the defensive line as a run-stuffing version of the package and Little Nickel featured B.J. Raji in a pass rushing version. Although there were a few snaps in which the personnel was slightly different.
• Psycho was used on three plays. The result of those plays:
  • Matthews sack (rushed 5 players).
  • Chillar interception (rushed 5 players).
  • Trent Edwards 1-yard gain on a scramble (rushed only 4 players).
• The Jumbo defensive formation with five defensive lineman was used on 1 goal-line play. The dime wasn't utilized at all.
• Morgan Burnett's interception will get all the attention, but the two plays prior to that weren't too shabby for the rookie either. He made an open field tackle on a Buffalo receiver on a third down that could have gone for a lot longer. Then the next play he tackled Marshawn Lynch on a run play for no gain. Good series.
• Matthews' third sack of the game on a play in which the Packers only rushed three players. He also rushed from the right side of the defense on a couple of occasions.

Special Teams

• The kickoff returns by C.J. Spiller in second half were slightly troubling, but remember that arguably the Packers' two best special teams players weren't active on Sunday: Korey Hall and Desmond Bishop. Newly acquired Dimitri Nance was on the last kickoff and probably didn't have a lot of preparation time.
• Tramon Williams needs to come up and make a fair catch on the first punt return of the game. He hasn't had a fumble or muff yet this season, but he's made you hold your breath a couple times.
• Following a week in which the Eagles generally left him alone, Brett Goode was abused by the Bills. After the snap on field goals and extra points, they would attack the middle of the field, and several times Goode ended up on his keister. But he had perfect snaps on all kicks and punts and did his best to hold the point of attack in a Purple Hearth worthy effort.
