Favre Staying Away...For Now

Peter King has the scoop over at SI.com.

With Fave promising to stay away from camp until Thompson can "work something out" and with Favre and Commissioner Goodell suddenly becoming phone buddies AND with reports that the Jets are all but out of the picture, it's obvious how this plays out. And the Packers are the ones who are going to get screwed.

No doubt the Packers asking price of a 1st rounder is too high for the Buccaneers. The Commissioner will step in and tell the Packers to accept whatever the Bucs are willing to give up, which could be as low as a third round pick. The Packers will be left with the option of trading Favre for basically nothing, giving him an outright release, or letting him come to camp and allow the media circus that would no doubt ensue to tear apart the team.

I'm disliking Favre more and more...

Curious to see how far Mr. Goodell pushes this, and if he'd ultimately push the Packers into granting "li'l buddy" an outright release. That'd be some pretty serious tampering in its own right, wouldn't it?

Does it strike anyone as a little odd that a player starts lobbying the commissioner of the NFL to "mediate" his dispute with an opposing team? Can you think of another player that would do this sort of thing?

And why is Favre so set on an outright release? Why won't he help with a trade? There are 29 other teams in the league besides the Vikings, Bears and Packers. If you have some others in mind, tell the team.

"...why is Favre so set on an outright release?" Obviously, because he wants to sign with the Vikings...

Pretty transparent, eh? And what do you make of Favre's comments about his conversations with Bevell and Chilly? He's professing innocence, but I'm disinclined to believe anything that comes out of his mouth these days.

I won't ever believe a thing Favre says on the record ever again.

Will you hate Brett Favre when rookie Brian Brohm is QB because brittle Aaron Rodgers gets hurt again?

At least Brian Brohm has been participating in off-season activities and hasn't been bashing the coaching staff and GM.

Mac - I never said hate. Wouldn't use that word in relationship to Favre. But dislike? More and more every day...

I still love Brett and I still love the Packers. Perhaps I'm schizo, but somehow I'm able to hang onto both. I just don't buy all of what TT says or all of what BF says. Unfortunately they are both way too human.

Period.

Agreed that Goodell has no legitimate role to play here. Otherwise, hogwash.

Odd is Ted Thompson/Packers telling Favre, 'You will play where I tell you to play (does Siberia have an NFL franchise?), keep the bench warm and my Chardonay chilled (Not really. Go home.), or, best of the options I'm giving you, go home...and stay there.'

I remember TT/Packers telling Javon Walker,' I own you. You will get to camp and play or else.', but I don't recall TT/Packers, or any other GM/team, telling a player, 'Just leave us alone'.

One would think TT/Packers would try to extract maximum trade value while ridding himself of a problem player, but if he is excluding any team from the bidding, which obviously is the case, he is not doing so.

Very odd, indeed, for the GM/team to be the party which is "holding out".
