DL Mike Daniels Lobbies for CBs Aqib Talib, Malcolm Butler
-- In order to stay competitive in a conference such as the NFC that just continues to seemingly get better each offseason, it's important to make the necessary improvements to remain a contender.
Mike Daniels knows that. And on Friday, the Green Bay Packers' defensive lineman made an appearance on NFL Total Access and ensured that his squad may very well just be a few extra additions away from being heavy favorites in a crowded NFC.
"One guy I would definitely love to play with is Aqib Talib," Daniels said during the show's "1 Piece to the Playoffs" segment. "He's a little nuts, as you would say. ... He's a great veteran presence. We did a good job bringing [Davon] House back in that cornerback room, and it's always good to have veterans at such a critical position like that."
Talib, a five-time Pro Bowler who was an integral part of the Denver Broncos' championship defense in 2015, is reportedly on the verge of being traded by the team sometime this offseason. However, they're expected to release him if they can't find a potential suitor. He would bring the loud, in-your-face style of play that Daniels could potentially be looking for.
Daniels, of course, has been vocal in his desire for having "dogs" on the Packers' defense. That's why he was elated with the hiring of new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, as his background shows that he doesn't beat around the bush and isn't afraid to put players in their place.
The second player Daniels named in the segment was New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, who is set to become a free agent at the start of the new league year in mid-March.
Like Talib, Butler is also a former Pro Bowler and a vital part of -- not just one -- two Super Bowl-winning defenses. Albeit slightly undersized, Butler could very well come to Green Bay and immediately play on the perimeter opposite Kevin King or Damarious Randall, depending on whether or not Pettine swaps him occasionally between the slot and the outside.
Butler would evidently be leaving the Patriots with a sense of distaste after not seeing the field in Super Bowl 52. That could be a motivator for some players who seek career rejuvenation elsewhere.
The Packers need obvious upgrades defensively, and it wouldn't reflect poorly on them if those upgrades started at outside linebacker first, if not cornerback. They'd just need to prioritize each position depending on the free agent market and see what they'd want to preserve for the 12 draft picks they have to play with.
2017 was the fourth time in the last seven years that former defensive coordinator Dom Capers coached a unit that finished in the bottom-third of the league's defensive standings, making the need for defensive stalemates that much more dire.

Well 4 GMs is better than NONE ... unless one considers the corpse of what used to be TT that they've showed on television the past several years to be a legitimate NFL GM.

I would like to see Butler before Talib and that’s not based on who’s better, I just think Butler could help solidify the the cb position for 4-5 years as Talib would more likely be 2-3 and that’s if we’re lucky.

Saw an interesting take on Butler.
"If Pete Carroll doesn't make the dumbest play call in Super Bowl history, are we even talking about this guy?"
Something to consider.

I don’t see why not it’s not like a David Tyree situation where that’s all he is known for and all he ever did. Butler followed that moment up with being a top 10 corner in the league and definitely would have contributed to this game had they played him.

But they didn't play him. Since I doubt the Pats were throwing the game, that makes you wonder, doesn't it? Wonder just what happened that the Pats would see Nick Foles (!!) set fire to their secondary and not put Butler on the field to try to stop it.

Perhaps, Butler had an attitude issue Belichick didn't care for and that attitude showed itself in the most egregious of ways leading up to the SB?
Belichick knew he wasn't going to resign him, so what better way to get back at someone he might think is a clown than by sitting him during the SB thus creating doubt about him and reducing his value in FA. I can't think of a much better way of sticking it to someone than that.

Not the first time or the last time BB has made a dumb decision. This was a decision that if it had gone right we would be saying how great it was. BB had already stuck it to Butler by signing a player coming from a division rival and giving him the money Butler had earned this was just the icing on the cake not only has he created doubt about Butlers ability but also lowered his value a bit with the last image we have was his less than stellar performance in the AFCCG. Make no mistake BB can be a real d*ck.

i won't get any of them just draft tall and long players,
talib is older and we don't really know if he has it and butler is too short remember his replacement is taller and stronger than he is so why pick him at all there are others

Does anyone think that Talib and Butler having rings already could make them complacent a la Martellus Bennett?

Yes. I think one thing NE has done well with their FAs is targeting those that are looking for a championship or redemption. That motivation is huge. GB can't be the team that rewards an aging vet for past performance, just can't afford it

No thanks, Talib is a knob and Butler is coming off his worst year, and both are old. Just draft Jackson, get younger and faster.

Butler’s worst year still grades him in the top 20, no Packers cb was even close to that. He’s definitely worth pursuing and I get the feeling he’ll be playing with an even bigger chip on his shoulder now.

Support your veteran stuff. Mike is just sucking up for a CB taken in the draft, and push the kids. It's obvious the DL does not play well when he's out. He needs to be pushed just as much as the guys in the secondary. Mike (the Gm) would not take a pay cut to bring in either Talib or Butler. And I loved the plug for House.

You beat me to it! I wonder if 76 would be willing to take a pay cut (or restructure) in order to add these (or any) veteran FA’s?

Talib is so much better than Butler. They shouldn't even be in the same discussion. Dude makes one play in the SB and now he's such a high comoddity . I'd rather have Fuller or Johnson over him any day of the week.

You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about if you sum up Butler’s career to a single play. Even in his worst year he was still a top 20 corner and that came after 2 top 10 finishes.

I'm surprised, I thought Daniels would lobby hard for Optimus Prime.....I hear he's a free agent and not resigning with the Autobots he would be a force in the middle.

I don't care how we do it but we need to get this defense fixed and back in the top 10 if you want to see any kind of playoffs or Super Bowl

I think I would be willing to give either a shot, but I still think we need to draft Josh Jackson regardless. Make em all fight it out for a spot. We need more competition at all positions, and Cb is just one of them. I saw Jackson play against the Badgers and his coverage could be described as "sticky." Go after Jackson, and Tramon Williams for depth + 1 other corner in FA, along with a WR1 and Trey Burton.

Daniels also said he would like to see Tahir Whitehead sign here and I agree. Underrated LB with speed and back to back 100 plus tackle seasons. Also a Nj native like Daniels.

Probably get Tallib little cheaper, Butler have seen for 3 plus years in NE, he is good had a so so year this past year but he is tough and has the attitude of a good cover corner. Way better than the stiffs GB has, the palms up shuffle is what I call it. "dude was not my man thought you had had him". Please grab one of these guys bring him in and hope King can be other guy. Get defense to middle of pack and AR can bring it home.
