Could the Vikings Really Make the Super Bowl?

Watching the NFL playoffs for the past couple weeks without the Green Bay Packers has been weird. It’s something that hasn’t happened since 2008, nine years ago.

However, if that feels like the twilight zone, you probably aren’t going to like what I am about to say next. Heck, I don’t even like it. But I think that we all need to prepare for the fact that the Minnesota Vikings might make the Super Bowl.

It’s hard to say if the Vikings can win it. The Patriots and the Steelers in the AFC both look very formidable, but if Minnesota wins Sunday, we should expect to have to watch them on Super Bowl Sunday.

Who knows if there is an internal power struggle between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick? If there was any frustration, it seems they took it out on the Tennessee Titans, who the Patriots dismantled 35-14.

It remains to be seen if the Vikings can beat a team like New England or Pittsburgh, but right now, in the NFC playoffs, the closest thing to either of those teams is New Orleans. So first, let's see if the Vikes handle the NFC South champs.

Not only do the Saints have a Super-Bowl winning quarterback in Drew Brees, just like the Patriots and Steelers have Brady and Big Ben, the Saints have a really good defense. And I mean, really good.

In terms of points allowed, New Orleans was 10th. Yards allowed was a little worse at 17th. But the pass rush is wicked. Minnesota got 37 sacks this season. New Orleans, led by 13 sacks from Cameron Jordan, finished with 42.

Case Keenum is playing out of his mind right now and has put up some great numbers. But are they better than the numbers put up by Brees? Is Keenum better than Brees?

The answer to both questions is no.

Brees completed more than 72 percent of his passes this season compared to 67 percent for Keenum. Brees threw 23 touchdowns, Keenum 22. Brees did throw eight interceptions, one more than Case, who had seven, but still, it’s hard to say Keenum was better than Brees.

The Saints were second in yards and fourth in points, while the Vikings were 10th in points and 11th in yards.

In fact, going into Sunday’s Divisional playoff game, Brees would have to be considered the Saints biggest advantage.

The other thing New Orleans has going for it, is the running game. Alvin Kamara and Mark Iingram have been the NFL’s most dynamic rushing duo this season. Kamara racked up more than 1,500 total yards himself, while Ingram, rushed for 1,124, while, he also cleared 1,500 total yards.

On top of that, the Saints have Michael Thomas, a Pro-Bowl receiver with 104 receptions for more than 1,200 yards. Rookie Marshon Lattimore, who has five interceptions, also joins Jordan as the Pro Bowler on defense.

All in all, the Saints are pretty loaded, which means if the Vikings beat them, they are probably headed to the Super Bowl.

The Eagles survived the Falcons and maybe in the battle of backup quarterbacks, Nick Foles could beat Keenum in a 13-10 slobberknocker. Anything is possible in the NFL playoffs.

But for some reason I get the feeling that whatever teams wins in Minnesota Sunday, will be returning a few weeks later to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.

The queen offense is meh at best, and their D was less than impressive vs the Pack (to me) with Hundley at the helm, he beat himself more than they outplayed us. I don't see them getting past a Drew Brees led Saints team, I know it's home field, but I see Minn going down 27-9

Look, Defense wins championships, and it's why I've been crying for the DOM Capers firing for years running. GB will never see another Super Bowl until the start playing competent defense. Right now the Vikings will be in the Super Bowl. They've already have beaten the Saints, convincingly! One constant has run thru their season, when that defense comes to pay, they win, period.

This is it for them, if they're ever going to win a Super Bowl, this is it! These windows are small, they're playing the best football they've played in a long time. The real question isn't their team, they good enough to win it all. The question is will they do what they've always done as a franchise, which is Choke In BIG Games! The question isn't if they're positioned to win the Super Bowl, they good enough! The question is will they beat themselves in the Playoffs.. My 2..

The vikings beat the Saints very early in the season. That was before the Saints came together with all their draftees and Drew Brees being on the same page. I think the Saints win and I hope they stomp the vikings.

Probably you are right. And Vikings can beat Saints, but they will noz pass by Philly D... Philly D is better than Vikings D and Philly O is much. much better than Vikings O. Even w/o Wentz.

Defense doesn't win championships. This tired and wrong cliche has been debunked numerous times, but it keeps getting regurgitated for some odd reason.

http://freakonomics.com/2012/01/20/does-defense-really-win-championships/

The #1 defense should've gone down vs. New Orleans. It took a miraculous offensive play after their top flight defense failed and squandered a 17-0 2nd half lead.

It drives me crazy to hear that DWC phrase. Please, do some actual studying on the subject and educate yourself before you make the mistake of every saying it or typing it again. :)

I've been impressed with the way Mike Zimmer has kept the Vikings winning in spite of losing their starting QB and RB. (Unlike the Packers). Their defense is solid, they come out jacked up and they don't just tackle, they punish ball carriers. Turnovers will win the game, and I think it will be close. But, I hope the Saints win. ;)

Ditto to all.
Is Bridgewater their preferred QB? Bradford second, and Keenum third? Yikes.
I was also very impressed with Cook at RB until he went down. (I had kinda hoped GB would draft him.)
So, in a way, I do admire what they’ve been able to accomplish.
Except I’m too busy loathing them.

Bradford has been practicing with the team. Look for Keenum to start and for Bradford to step in when the vikings cannot score. Almost all season long, the vikings have had Keenum as their QB. Now, they may use Bradford against the Saints. Talk about creating a QB controversy! Is Zimmer feeling the melt down sneaking up behind him?

Off topic....I saw the Seachickens just hired Brian Schottheimer as OC. That's just got to be a good thing for the Packers.

I will be here for at least 7 years. Probably more. My wife is an assistant prof here too. As you know, Dobber, getting a tenure track college prof job is just about as likely as winning the lottery. We've got a spousal hire here. It would take a HUGE job to move us.

So I deal with the heat and go the beach. :)

Yeah. The Seachickens are just about done. Their defense is falling apart, they have no OL, no RBs, 1 WR and are in salary cap hell. Then they blame their personnel problems on Bevell and Cable? And hire a retread NFL coach who has only ever been successful in college! LMAO!

Carroll has run that team into the ground. Coaches (with the exception of Belichick) should not be GMs. They have too many desires to win immediately and sacrifice the future. Schneider was smart to try and jump ship - and I think Murphy could have contested that block by the Seahawks. But I"m happy with who we've got.

And on this subject... I really don't like the power sharing agreement/reporting to Murphy between BG and MM. It's really IMO not going to end well: I'd bet every time the GM and HC disagree, Murphy will have to play referee.

I think we're going to see the end of MM in GB by the end of 2019 at the latest.

I'm not to hot on the whole idea either. There's an excellent piece by Dougherty this morning on how and why the Packers may have decided on their current "Arrangement" in the front office. Personally I would rather have ONE person making the decisions on personnel and who hires and fires the HC.

That's personally what I'm hoping. It's the only way out of the current problem. I don't know who made the power play, MM or Murphy, but either way, the buck has to stop with one guy for football operations. If you have 3 leaders of the football team, you have none.

We'll see... hopefully we get another title before the dysfunction kicks in. Cause you know it's coming.

There is one person, Murphy. Problem is he is not the guy conducting the analysis. Now decisions are a political football: which direct reports are more persuasive and hie strong are Murphy’s personal convictions on the subject.

Ultimately an owner has the right to screw up a team and it will hurt revenue so not without consequences. Murphy is not an owner and either derelicted his duty to date or wasn’t hired or interviewed for final football say so. Now that is how it is we need the Executive Committee to return to the role it had pre Wolf. Not sure that will happen. If it doesn’t no one to scrutinize Murphy within the organization.

This does not have to fail, but it seems that there are no safeguards now that the BoD and Executive Committee have been out of the loop for a quarter of a century.

I guess the Patriots will get the 31st or 32nd pick in the draft and won't be complaining that they dont get higher draft picks to effectively have a winning team.

Bottomline: No excuses for the Patriots. ALL THEY DO IS WIN !!

WHAT DO THE PACKERS DO? All we do is sit at HOME!!!

There is a difference between reasons and excuses. As Bearmeat said, BB is an all-time great coach.

Nevertheless, even the Patriots have made some questionable moves that may cost them in the next few years. For example, Stephen Gilmore has a cap hit of $26+ million over the next two years.

The Viking's Week 1 win over the Saints is not relevant at this point. The Saints defense has come along, and the whole team feels like it is peaking right now. It will be tough to win on the road, but I like their chances.

Can't believe the Falcons found a way to lose. Fair or not, Matty Ice seems destined to never win a Super Bowl. One thing that game brought home to me though - the Packers need to add a stud RT this year. I love Bulaga when he's healthy, but he has just not been healthy consistently enough throughout his career. It is too much dead money for TT, but TT ain't running the show anymore. Time to take a fresh look.

I don't mean to be Johnny Raincloud here, but the Vikings could absolutely make the SuperBowl and, yes, they can win it. Carson Wentz's injury makes that all the more possible. If they beat the Saints today, their most likely loss would come in the SB where I think both Pittsburgh (if Brown is close to 100%) and NE could beat them. I'd be a big Pats/STeelers fan that day.

Ok, Ok. the dreaded purple helmets from minnysota might make it to the dance. At least now we can pick our picks before them in the draft. Hopefully they'll be back to ice fishing after today with the rest of the "Grumpy old men" fans. Here's to hoping their balls freeze to the ice until spring.

Vikes win the superbowl Spud Rapids pays Duke $100. Vikes lose at anytime Duke pays Spud $20. Win win. Except for the loud mouth pricks up here in Duluth coming out of the woodwork. I have a lot of friends that our kind and nice and deserve some success but they don't make up for the trolling, injury celebrating a-holes that needle and poke but disappear and put away the purple at the first sign of any adversity. It's like the bet, not sure how I feel about it.... F the vikes. All the stars align for them to do it but they are the Vikes and will probably find a way to F it up.

I think this game will come down to if Keenum can beat the Saints suddenly formidable def, Marshone Lattimore is the truth and you can bet he’s making who ever he’s matched against irrelevant Cam Jordan is another beast. I can’t see the Vikings def totally shutting down this off so I’m looking for the Saints to put up at least 20 points. Can Keenum match?

The vikes have the talent on both sides the ball and could win the sb.. The bigger concern, whats stopping them from being dominant for years to come. Again i say ted t did a lot of damage by piss poor drafting. This team cannot rebuild in one or two years meanwhile, rogers gets older. Not pretty. Detroit and chicago get to draft too. Not like the pack gets all the good players.

Just seems to me that the vikings had been mediocre for so long that they inevitably and invariably received high draft picks... building up their team as they went along... they were SO BAD that they HAD to get better... the Packers, on the other hand, had so many lower draft picks that they were actually forced into mediocrity... as seen by this years squad... they say the Packer's have a lot of talent, but I'm not so sure they really do... IMHO

Boy, talk about playing with a horseshoe up your rear. Keenum has been throwing balls up for grabs in a way that could easily have been 3-5 picks. Instead, the last duck goes for the game-winning TD when HHCD channels the Saint DB for an ugly, awful missed tackle.

The last 4 QBs standing...Blake Bortles, Case Keenum, Nick Foles and Tom Brady. One of those things doesn't look like the others.

In a game that will go down as "Great moments in Vegas history", the Saints DB makes the gawd-awful play that looks to give Minny a cover of the 5.5 spread but the Vikes kneel on the XP attempt to give the Saints back the "Vegas win".

That DB should be cut today on principle alone.
Tell teammates if they can't tackle, they can't play in the NFL.
That should be on a training camp highlight reel about how NOT to tackle.
Finally a team loses a game on an embarrassing attempt at a tackle.
And I'll bet the coaching staff does nothing to correct it.

As to Zimmer almost squashing a 17 point lead, I will point to the most depressing night of my life (I've been blessed) when Mike McCarthy's Green Bay Packers choked in the NFC Championship against the only other team I cheer against every single weekend and whose Emerald City I call home. That epic fail would have been way worse than the Viking loss, of which didn't happen, in part due to Zimmer's incredible clock management - certainly not one of Mike's strengths. In fact, he is AWFUL at clock/TO management in general.

Finally, why does Ron Zook still have a job?

I agree CAG123. Make the tackle, game over. Since he didn't, I would have chosen he interfered and got the penalty, (though the refs were letting the dbacks get away with a lot of contact), then the actual result. Then you could still have a missed FG, which the Viqueens are historically known for in the playoffs, or a botched snap, or fumbled snap by the holder.

The end of the Saints/Vikings game is why I keep posting that the quality of NFL play is getting worse and worse with every week. All Williams had to do was let Diggs catch the ball and wrap him up. Game over. Instead he drops his head and misses an easy play and wastes the entire season for his teammates and their fans. The stupidity of current NFL players defies description. You could not make this up.

This is why I post so often that if you could equalize the size and speed of the players from the 60s, 70s and 80s with the current players, the teams from those earlier eras would demolish the current teams. 60s Packers and Colts,, 70s Steelers, Raiders and Cowboys, 80s 49ers would all destroy any of the post 2000 teams and the games wouldn’t be close.

The NFL gets closer and closer to becoming a joke like professional wrestling has become. Even the NFL playoffs have become unwatchable. The Falcons stop themselves against the Eagles, the officials give the game to the Pats, the Steelers fall apart against the Jags and then both the Vikings and Saints our choke each other until that shameful final play. So much for the best week of the season. Thanks , Since ‘61

Here’s a very discouraging thought that occurred to me:
We all want GB’s defense to improve, right?
Well, Jax’s defense was awesome all year long. Against Pitt, they gave up over 500 yards and 42 points. (But yes, Jax did win the game.)
So even IF GB’s D can climb much higher in the rankings, can ANY D be counted on against a really good offense?
I wish the thought never even occurred to me. Ugh.

That is a good point TK. When I was watching that game I kept thinking...Pittsburgh has really good WRs and a lot of them. It really stressed that Jaguars defense to the max. Then watching the second half of the Saints game, Saints receivers gave the purple fits. It made my thinking shift from defense a little bit and consider the question of " would our receivers, TEs ,Line be able to stress those teams like that? And my current answer is no.

WKU - in fairness to the defender you keep your head up. You never duck your head that’s either how you get hurt trying to tackle or how you take yourself out of the play, which he did. You keep your head up and keep the receiver in bounds game over. The problem is ok many players in today’s game don’t know how to play basic football. And they have the ready made excuses which you presented. The reality is that is bad football and should never happen at the professional level. Yet we see far too many plays like that in every game and it keeps getting worse and worse. If you can justify that play by Williams then you can accept lousy football and that’s fine. For me, I done. I can’t watch any more of this crap. I’ m more than happy to wait for the next Packers game in September. Nine months without this alleged football is fine for me.
I have plenty to do besides watching what has become a sad joke of a sport. Thanks, Since ‘61

No excuse was presented. If you have a beef with the presented reason take it up with Jimmy Johnson. And if he had hit Diggs prior to the ball arriving you would be ripping him for getting a pass interference penalty, setting up a Vikings field goal attempt.

Of course, your fantasy that the Saints defender really didn't want to make the play could be true.

I have some sympathy for this point of view. The lack of contact allowed in practice is a definite issue.

But still, some teams seem to tackle well consistently while others do not. It was like that before the CBA changes and it is like that after them. I don't believe that is solely a product of the player acquisition methods of those teams. I think the coaching staffs of the teams that do it well demand that tackling be done well. And their practice/preparation dictates that it happens like that.

I pray that Pettine is among the coaches that demand fundamentally sound tackling. It would be a throw-back to the Jim Bates years. And it was those players that Capers made into a top 5 defense for 2 years before the "conversion" of defensive personnel was complete and it all went to crap.

These guys are pros. It shouldn’t be hard to arrive at the balk carrier under control enough to grab the guy and fall to the ground?! I would suggest that Williams wanted fame by blowing the guy up so he could be on Sport’s Center and brag tweet to his followers? Football will always be football. I cannot see another reasonable conclusion beside the Saint DB doing all he could to avoid the PI flag. I don't believe it was a flat-out miss. It's just too ugly of a miss for it to be a miss. There has to be another explanation. In a slo-mo view I saw in the aftermath, it appeared he veered to the side to avoid contact ever so slightly at the last possible moment.

He didn't look early to me. Had he kept his head up, I think he would have seen that it looked to be a clean shot right on time. Every defensive coach in the NFL ought to be showing that play all offseason to show the bad things that happen when you put your head down to deliver the "big hit'. Eyes up, see what you're hitting, wrap up at contact.

Correct, Williams veered off at the last possible moment. Which is more probable? Williams was following his coaches' warning about not getting a PI penalty, or he (for some unknown reason) didn't want to make the play?

It was a fluke occurrence, nothing more. Claiming that it represents some major flaw in the modern game is an unfortunate immediate emotional reaction.

The no coachlost the game by wasting two time outs to foolish red flag calls. He couldn't in the time of battle settle his guys down and coach them what not to do.
Hey if your at the 25 two 20 yd completions and a 5 yd run and your toast.
The no d needed coaching. They blew it.

Not only that, but the plays that probably should have been challenged were not. An example would be one of the Murray runs that was only 9.5 yards but spotted for a first down. Should have been challenged.

Except the Saints called a TO on defense one play before the game-ending play. Coming out of that TO, Minny threw an incompletion, which changed nothing except ticking the clock down 4 more seconds from :14 to :10

How many saw that miss and thought 'that looks like Packers tackling of the last few years to me'?

I texted to a friend when the Saints went down 17-0: Hell, the Packers can do that...

Mike Zimmer is about to take Case Keenum to as many Super Bowls as Mike McCarthy has with Aaron Rodgers. What a joke.

And possibly BLAKE BORTLES could have a super bowl ring right there with Brett Favre and Aaron Rogers.

My question to the board or perhaps to Las Vegas Tom is: who’s bookie contacted Williams to blow that pop warner level tackle & throw that game?! That’s what I want to know! Lol. The kid was an R2 draft pick! WTH?!

I was being facetious of course Tom but seriously, that’s a play any pro safety should make. There was allegedly 5 seconds left when the catch was made. The problem I have is that the defender was in perfect position to grab Diggs and fall down....IF HE HAD ARRIVED UNDER CONTROL! He didn’t and he shafted his whole team! Williams was WAY TOO FAR OFF THE BALL to think anyone was behind him so I can’t accept that excuse either. By rule, the PAT apparently needed to be attempted but they had to get enough poor souls from the NO locker room to line up for the meaningless PAT! I think the punter was playing 1 tech.!? Lol. Just a cluster bang!! We can’t accept this level of play as 61’ & others have pointed out!

I don't believe for a second, that tackle was blown on purpose. He must have thought he had help behind him. Still he had an easy tackle. If the receiver goes out of bounds, I didn't see where the clock was or what yard line they were at. There was 10 seconds when the play started.

What I want to know, is "What Happened On The Point After Attempt?? It happened so fast, I didn't see it. Most Sport Books had the game at Minn -5 1/2. There were a lot of Betters who needed that Extra Point, to make it a 6 Pt Win. I didn't see what happened. Can Someone tell me?? Did they try & kick it?? I never saw anything like it. A lot of Betters lost their Bets because that game stayed a 5 Pt Win.

I heard the refs come over the mic and say the Queens had to kick the PAT to complete the game. I assumed it was a formality.
So it never happened apparently?
I turned the TV off after that.

LOL- cowards they are! Killed the betting line - why I don't gamble on sports any more. And the stock market, on individual stocks either, after 2017.

Finwiz, As I said, I don't believe that tackle was missed on purpose. What I do believe is this.: If Vegas wanted that Pt., they would have made sure, one way or another that it was made. Vegas had the Line covered whether Minn won or lost. What they apparently didn't want, was MINN to Cover.
You guys are starting to wake up. Way to go Finwiz & Hank Scorpio. You hit it right on the head. There is much more here that none of us can see. Someday my hope is that everyone see's what is going on with the gambling & the NFL. If you don't believe that, you never will. That's fine with me. I wish I had the facts. I Don't!! But I have a pretty good idea of what's going on. You guy's can believe what you want.

I would add that the official had to go back to the locker room to retrieve some Saints to line up on that extra point attempt--with the injured Saint punter playing NT. By then, at least 10 minutes had passed.

Minny could have easily run in for 2. It was classy move to take a knee.
No need to rub it in the noses of guys that were just trying to get home to deal with such a crushing defeat.

Not much consolation to the bettors that took the shaft on it.
