Colts Game '10 Preseason: Offense, Defense & Special Teams

What to watch for in each phase of the game when Green Bay takes on Indianapolis this evening at 7 p.m. Lambeau time.

Here's the primary thing I'm watching in each phase of the game from a Packers perspective:

  • Offense: Bryan Bulaga – In a game where the starting offense will play more than the two possessions they played last week against Seattle, the first-round draft choice should get plenty of opportunities to switch on and off at left guard with Daryn Colledge, as long as he's healthy. The Packers may choose to play it safe after Bulaga dropped out of Monday's practice with a hip flexor issue. However, he did practice the next day. Even when the starters come out of the game, the Iowa product will likely stay in the game, this time at left tackle with the second string. There should be plenty of game film on Bulaga at two positions after this evening.
  • Defense: The nickel back position – From an observer's standpoint, hopefully the Packers will rotate Brandon Underwood, Pat Lee and Sam Shields evenly with the No. 1 defense. Under such a rotation, their performances can be compared a little more easily if they're surrounded by a group of players that remains a little more static with the starting defense. Whoever emerges from this game with the biggest play or the least amount of errors could put his self in prime position to win the job in the regular season.
  • Special teams: Sam Shields – Forget about the return game. Watch Shields and his supposed 4.2 40-yard dash speed race down the field on kickoff coverage, as a gunner on punts, as a jammer on punt return and as a potential field goal blocker off the edge on defense. A silver platter has been placed in front of him as a chance to displace Jarrett Bush.

I'd like to see a little more CJ Wilson tonight and the last preseason game.

The team only has 7 CBs currently on the active roster. Bush makes the team even if Shields does unless Clark also makes the 53, which I see as unlikely. Bush could also go if 5 safties are kept, but I doubt this would happen as well. I see Bush lasting until Harris returns. And if any other CB gets injured, or Harris does not make it back, Bush could be on the team for a long time yet. Trades or other aquisitions could also change things.

"Displacing" Bush doesn't mean kicking him off the roster, necessarily. I'd settle for Shields taking all his special teams slots and Bush remaining inactive on game days.

"A silver platter has been placed in front of him as a chance to displace Jarrett Bush."

Perfectly stated.
