Camp Notes: Day 7

Some quick observations from day seven at Ray Nitschke Field.

  • Reggie Begelton hadn't done much during training camp so far but he announced his presence with authority today. He was everywhere catching everything. From winning two of his one on ones in impressive fashion to making five or six really impressive catches during different team drills, the guy was everywhere.
  • Jon Runyan got the initial work at left guard with the starters during team work.
  • Aaron Rodgers continued doing Aaron Rodgers things. On one play during team today he escaped to his right, had both Cobb and Jones available to him underneath...but instead he launched a 50 yarder to Lazard in the endzone for a TD.
  • Rodgers also hit a bullseye into a net over 50 yards away. Just legend stuff.
  • Josh Meyers did some really nice work in the run game today including one play where he had a really nice seal block on Kenny Clark.
  • AJ Dillon made a nice move on De'Vondre Campbell to get open up the right sideline but just missed a throw from Rodgers that ended up going off his fingertips. But the initial release was great.
  • Jace Sternberger got more work with the ones today than he probably has all camp. That said, he was also out there at the end of practice for the "young guys" session.
  • Speaking of tight ends, at the start of practice, tight ends coach Justin Outten and Marcedes Lewis were going through some technique things with Robert Tonyan. Big Dog is truly like a coach on the field.
  • Kabion Ento had a really nice pass breakup in redzone work on a backshoulder throw intended for Funchess.
  • No practice tomorrow. The next time we'll see the guys is at Lambeau Field for Family Night.
  • Go Pack.

I really like that Josh Myers has looked good so far. It’ll be hard to fill Corey Linsley’s shoes, but I have faith in him.

Just when you thought the WR roster was set, along comes ESB, Winfree, and now Begelton.

Cobb is going to necessitate cutting a good young talent that that may not make the PS. And a few others who may not either.

It’s set. And we can just offer a sweeter deal to keep them on the practice squad.

We could offer MVS or Lazard in trade. I don’t think so.

Adams, Lazard, MVS, Cobb, Rodgers. Winfree to the PS. ESB is probably going to be cut.

Since Sternberger is starting the year suspended I am thinking they'll keep 6-7 going into the year (Winfree and Funchess) and cut one or two going into week 3 but I'm wrong about a lot of stuff. Winfree being a ST player helps too because it let's you carry one less DB that would only play on the return or coverage units, especially if he's able to play gunner.

Depending on how he shows in the exhibition games, I doubt that Winfree would make it to the PS. He would be a waiver claim, which we could do nothing about.

Sure he would, Jurp. Every team in the league has had a chance to get him and for various reasons, they didn’t.

Green Bay can offer him a bonus , which usually is enough to keep a guy. And there’s going to be plenty of opportunity next year.

Thanks Nags, I always enjoy your observations almost as much as I enjoy a butter burger and a Spotted Cow when I’m back in Wisconsin!

I forgot about Reggie B, & I loved his addition last year.
Now with Oprah Winfree lighting it up, along with Cobb, Funchess, Amari being added to the full corps of WRs from last year's #1-ranked offense, there's no prayer of Reggie making it.

Sadly agreed. I loved the Begelton signing but Winfree is younger and probably has more long term upside. Begelton has CFL experience but up till now hasn't been able to translate that to playing NFL football where you don't get a running start.

We are getting to the point where players challenge our assumptions. As rookies find their feet it will get more interesting. Looking forward to the real battles ahead.

Looks like we are replacing Ramsey:

Chauncey Rivers, EDGE, Mississippi State
6’2”, 262

“Edge worker with ability to beat blockers with strong hands or initial quickness, depending on the matchup. His pad level and contact balance help win inside to disrupt the B-gap. He takes on bigger blockers with sharp hand strikes before sliding away, but maulers can overwhelm him at times. His rush isn’t very tools-y, but is fairly fluid and should improve once he adds to the tool belt. Rivers’ issues at Georgia were documented in Season 2 of the Netflix documentary series “Last Chance U,” but the reset at Mississippi State offered consistent production and play over two seasons. Look for teams to consider him as a 3-4 SAM ‘backer with enough short-area athleticism to handle the transition.” https://russellstreetreport.com/2020/04/28/ravens-draft-central/ravens-u...

Rivers had a pretty bad day at the combine. Resulted in a sub 2 RAS score for what it is worth. Based on what I can find, that doesn’t tally with his film and the Ravens seem to have agreed enough to hang in to him for a year. I even see a reference to him being able to cover (one can wish). His one game active was summed up thus:

“OLB Chauncey Rivers (14 snaps) played both a standing edge role and rushed from a 3-point stance inside on passing downs. He did not make the stat sheet or generate a pressure, but the Steelers averaged just 4.1 yards on the snaps he played and were 3/7 on 3rd down with him in.” Baltimorefilmstudies.com
