Bowl Game Pro Prospect Watch: Poinsettia Bowl

The top prospects on display are San Diego State's combo of wide receivers, Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson.

One of the best parts of the college football bowl season is watching the guys who are going to play on Sundays in the very near future.

Here at Cheesehead TV, we're attempting to list all the senior pro prospects (even the longshots) and a couple very highly rated junior ones as well, as a de facto viewing guide.

Poinsettia Bowl–Thursday Dec. 23, 7 p.m. on ESPN

San Diego State

  • Wide receiver Vincent Brown–The Aztecs have one of the best wide receiver combos in the nation, comparable to last night's Boise State duos. Brown had 61 catches for 1,187 yards this season and nine touchdowns. He was ninth in the nation in receiving yards per game (98.9). Consider that one of his beter games of the year came against a tough TCU defense when he had two touchdowns. At 6-0, 195 pounds, e's the 10th-ranked wide receiver in this year's draft class according to NFL Draft Scout and figures to be a mid-round draft choice.
  • Wide receiver DeMarco Sampson–Sampson had 65 catches for 1,175 yards and eight touchowns this season, good enough to earn his first-team All-Mountain West honors along with Brown. But he doesn't appear to be quite as good a pro prospect. "While he can hit the home run, he’s not a speedster and will have to fight to make a pro roster," writes Pete Fiutak of College Football News. He's the 43rd-ranked wide receiver by NFL Draft Scout.
  • Center Trask Iosefa–He's started all 48 games of his entire college career, has twice been on the Rimington Award Watch List and has helped the Aztecs only allow nine sacks on the entire season. He's the 47th-ranked center in this year's draft class by NFL Draft Scout.
  • Punter Brian Stahovich–Not on many people's radar, but he a first-team All-Mountain West selection this season. He had 17 punts of 50 or more yards his junior year.
  • Fullback Brandon Sullivan–He's the 46th-ranked fullback in this year's draft class by NFL Draft Scout.

Navy

  • Quarterback Ricky Dobbs–Because of the stringent commitments players from the service academies must serve, the odds are long that they'll ever make it to the NFL. But Dobbs is more special than most. He's probably the best Navy quarterback since Roger Staubach, although he's more known for his running in Navy's option offense. His best season came as a junior when he ran for 1,203 yards and an amazing 27 touchdowns. He's actually ranked as running back by NFL Draft Scout, the 46th-ranked RB. Navy doesn't pass a ton, but that's not to say they never do. Dobbs completed 55% of his passes this season with 12 touchdowns compared to five interceptions.
