Betting Odds On The Packers' First-Round Draft Pick

Ohio State defensive end Cameron Heyward has the shortest odds of any player to be drafted by the Packers.

For the all the degenerate gamblers out there, here's the odds on the players the Packers will select from with their first-draft choice, no. 32 overall, barring a trade.

I'm not an odds maker. These are based upon media coverage given to particular players, mock drafts and my own personal knowledge of the Packers and pro prospects.

Given the Packers have the very last selection of the first round, the odds are quite high, because there's so many directions the draft will go before the Packers select.

This is merely for fun. Please keep that in mind...

  • The field (3-1): Because the Packers draft so late in the first round, there's no way to predict who will still be on the board, or who the Packers may be targeting with their first pick. The odds that Packers select someone from the field as opposed to any of the players named below are pretty good.
  • Cameron Heyward (4-1): Heyward might the best combination of a player most likely to still be on the board along with being the best player available, and to a lesser extent, filling a need for the Packers. Heyward appears to be an ideal five-technique player that can help fill the holes perhaps left by Cullen Jenkins and Johnny Jolly.
  • Akeem Ayers (5-1): After Von Miller, Ayers seems to be the safest choice as the next linebacker coming off the board. His measurables aren't elite, although he had a very productive college career, which may be even more valuable.
  • Justin Houston (6-1): There's slightly more projection with Houston as opposed to Ayers, given that the Georgia product just moved to outside linebacker in his senior season and has slightly less experience with things like dropping into coverage. Still, there's loads of potential dripping from Houston.
  • Brooks Reed (8-1): Right now, there's more hope than conviction that Reed will be the next Clay Matthews. He may very well go onto to be a highly productive professional, but there are safer choices.
  • Derrek Sherrod (10-1): Sherrod would be an ideal for the Packers and a possible fixture at left tackle for the next decade. More than likely, however, he'll be off the board by the time the Packers select.
  • Danny Watkins (12-1): The same could be said of Watkins as Sherrod. He would seem to be a good fit on the Packers offensive line, though he may be gone by pick #32.
  • Aaron Williams (15-1): A little more of a longshot. Most draft prognosticators have Williams labeled as a second-round choice, but there's a chance he could be the highest player on the Packers' board when they're on the clock.

I suspect we trade back with Arizona at 38 or Tennessee at 39 who may want to leapfrog the Bills and Bengals to grab a QB.

If that happens, I hope we grab Leonard Hankerson (my first choice) or Brooks Reed (my second choice).

My crack pipe dream scenario...Nick Fairley somehow slips past the first 6 or 7 picks and Ted trades our 1, 2 and 3 to get him.

I bet the Packers trade up with the Seahawks and take OT.

AYers Sherrod or Williams. My hope is Ayers, long shot is Sherrod so Williams is my bet.

Trade down is also very likely.
