Allen Lazard signs with the New York Jets

The former undrafted player out of Iowa State gets paid in free agency.

Jordan Schultz reports that the New York Jets have agreed to a four-year, $44 million deal with former Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard, with $22 million guaranteed.

Lazard, 27, is coming off his best season, with 60 catches for 788 yards and six touchdowns in 15 games. During his time in Green Bay, he made 169 receptions for 2,236 yards and 20 touchdowns.

The former Packers wide receiver joins former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in New York. Will a soon-to-be former Packers quarterback be joining them soon? Stay tuned.

It looks like Rodgers has been waiting to see whether his buddies would be with him in New Jersey . If Lazard signed with the Jets, Rodgers can’t be far behind him.

If Randall Cobb also signs with the Jets, it will be pretty obvious these were Rodgers demands before he'd agree to sign. Jets seem willing to appease him. I was tired of the Packers having to appease him.

The Jets bring in Hackett. Then they sign Lazard, and are looking into signing Cobb. It seems these are things that Rodgers would want from a team he is going to join. The only questions remaining would be restructuring his contract, and, maybe, having more control of the offense when he's on the field, such as he did in Green Bay. Also, how long would he commit to playing? And would he finally show up at non-required off-season practices? Now, the question becomes, both teams are eyeball to eyeball over compensation. Who will blink? Or will they come to a compromise? Interesting times, indeed.

Lazard, Cobb, Lewis....all FAs. Lazard wants and deserves some money, Cobb wants another year with his bro, and Lewis wants to set the TE longevity record. None of them really figure to have much of a future, except Lazard, who we're just not going to be able to afford (We could have signed him to a multi-year deal in the past, but we didn't).

This doesn't affect the Packers at all. We could get a comp pick for Lazard next year. But yeah, it's more foreshadowing of Rodger's imminent departure from Green Bay.

This kind of stuff does kind of raise the stakes. If the Jets go the playoffs, and the Packers don't, people are going to throw stones.

I don’t see MLF guiding this team to the playoffs. He was simply along for the ride while Rodgers put together three pretty good seasons.
Not to mention the Joe Barry factor.

I expect a slightly worse record in 2023, as I’m not convinced LaFleur is as good as his W-L record. However, I am optimistic that Gute will do a good job in the draft, and who knows, the new kids (Love included) might just jell quickly. If not 2023, they should be competing for a playoff spot in 2024. Go Pack Go!

Can't wait for the Jets Press Conference with 12, 13, 18, and 89... Sure Joe Namath will be there too to hand AR his 12 Jersey... Ought to be good entertainment!

*Good for Lazard! He deserves to get paid. Allen Lazard getting by with a little help from his friends...

if the Jets do those signings, they are effectively splitting the locker room right from the start. it's a bad precedent. it also over-empowers Rodgers. good luck J-E-T-S.

the one positive for the jets is that their head coach isn't the milk-toast pushover that MLF is.

Well, there goes an important part of our offense....So does that add more urgency to finding the most polished TE in terms of blocking in the draft? Or do we hope we can land a big WR like Johnston or Tillman who can be developed to fill the void?

Lazard was a great signing by Gute and I wish him success with the Jets. I just wished AR had elected to throw to him at key times in a couple of our playoff losses.

Good for Lazard. He cashed in with the help of his buddy in a weak WR FA class. No way I’d have paid him that. Cheaper options someplace

Not to mention Hackett definitely wanted him no matter what, if only for his blocking, but he's a decent WR too... An innovative OC will use Lazard like 9ers use Kittle... Why we didn't is because, well, MaLF... SMH

Cheaper options are already on the roster. Let the Jets further commit to some more of his demands and then Gutekunst can do some harder negotiating...

Yeah. The price is 2 #1's and 2 #2's, plus a swap of our 3's.

Remembering all the times Lazard was wide open and Rodgers didn't even look his way (especially irritating in playoffs when ball went to doubled Adams) I thought Lazard waits to start anew with Love or wherever. Many people think that we are losing typical WR3 or WR2 tops. It's not only his stats what's leaving Green Bay. Part of his numbers are hidden in other guy's balances. Sometimes proper mental features are harder to find than atheltic ones and that's what I am afraid of.

Would be funny as hell if the Packers got pissed at Rodgers for not letting them know so they could do some dealing w/o waiting for his decision. Keep him and say no the trade and then have him sit behind Love. Ya I know crazy idea and will not happen but it would be the right thing to do to Rodgers being such an ass by we all know him again sticking it to the Packers! Packers would lose to much because my guess Rodgers would retire and then later pull a Favre manever!

Welcome to the New York Packers, a one-year quest to prove the futility of those previously known as GB Packers.

Lazard got paid because Rodgers made the Jets pay him, not because his market would have gotten him $44 million. The Jets put his price where no other team would take Lazard away from the Rodgers list., and played on Lazard's, possible lack of confidence to test the market.

Rodgers wants his guys, so missing OTA's is normal.

AR talking to Jets brass:

AR: First, what about my $60 million..."
Jets brass: "Sure, no problem."
AR: "Hire my buddy Hackett"
JR : "No problem".
AR: "Next fly everybody out here to my home and beg me to play for you..."
JB: "No problem"
AR: "Then sign all my buddies, whether you need them or not".
JB: "We'll see what we can do".
AR: "Not see what you can do, do it..."(Lazard is signed)
JB: "Anything else?"
AR: "I let you know when I have a decision about playing..."
JB: "When might that be?"
AR: "First I have to fly to Peru, then go into a cave in the Andes for a week to sort things out."
JB: (Away from the phone to others in New York).."Should we offer to sell him part of the Statue of Liberty?"

With Lazard going to New York and also certainly the possibility of Cobb joining as well, the Jets have a ton of receivers. Hopefully it increases the likelihood that a WR is coming back to GB in a Rodgers trade…Corey Davis sure would look good in the Green and Gold! There may be cap issues with that, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed nonetheless.

Spotrac said Lazard would get 10 million a year and they were right. And he deserves it. We can't afford and thats the bottem line. We need some cheap guy for less than 1/2 of that or as better options, demand Elijah Moore, Denzel Mims, and Jeremy Ruckert are part of the trade package for Rodgers. They really don't need any of them now if signing Lazard, Cobb, and Mercedes Lewis. That is 3 picks we don't need to make in the draft and we get 2 pretty damn good WRs and Ruckert would be our best current TE. Then we could wait until 4th round for best WR still available like Andre Iosivas, Jonathon MIngo, Charlie Jones, Tyler Scott, Rakim Jarrett, Matt Landers, or sleeper Trea Schropshire UAB- averaged 24 ypc for last 3 years. We could concentrate early on Saftey, Tight End and Edge. Especial if we trade back in 1st round and gain 2 more picks in first 3 rounds.
