A.J. Hawk: If You Don't Test for HGH, Players Are Going to Do It

Testing for Human Growth Hormone began for NFL players on Monday.

On the day testing for Human Growth Hormone (HGH) started in the NFL, Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk commended the decision by the NFL to take action.

"It's good for the league," said Hawk. "I think it's good for everyone. I've said it a million times, if you're not going to test for it, guys are going to do it.

"I don't know what that number or percentage would be of guys in the league, I have no idea. But it's good anytime you can keep everything fair, it's good for us."

NFL players union president Eric Winston outlined a few of the regulations regarding testing HGH in a letter published on the NFL's website on Monday.

"Testing for hGH will begin on Monday, October 6th," writes Winston. "Each week of the season, 5 players on 8 teams will be tested. No testing will occur on game days."

Hawk said he was not among those tested on Monday.

Testing for HGH was part of several revisions to the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances, including levels of discipline and the use of third-party abitrators to hear appeals.

Defensive lineman Mike Daniels had little to say on the start of testing for HGH other than to express he wouldn't be caught cheating the system.

"I don't do drugs," said Daniels. "I listen to the D.A.R.E. program."

True.
And for a guy who is such an avid weightlifter, how come AJ isn't more rocked up? Jacked?
Do Hans and Frans only work with QB's?

Clay is probably hiding in the corner hoping his name isn't called.

he had to lay off the juice, that's why he can't even win 1-1 against Barbre and players of Barbre's caliber now...

If Clay hasn't been popped yet for PEDs I doubt they'll catch him on HGH. The NFL's testing policy is a sham and the players can easily afford top quality doctors to avoid getting caught. Look what Lance Armstrong did with a much smaller pay check and much tighter drug testing!

I don't think there is a single player in the NFL that I would be shocked at if they got busted for doping. Actually, I take that back, I'd be shocked if any player got caught doping with the NFL's testing regime; I would not be surprised to learn players dope after their careers are over.

you're probably right. Most are using something. But most do as if they've never taking anything, and then appear shocked that they got caught. See welker and his "Somebody put something in my drink at the Kentucky Derby." Sure Wes...

Good to see this go through, maybe now the NFLPA and NFL will get rid of all privacy surrounding positive tests and we can find out what players are actually testing positive for. Although if we see a sharp spike in "adderall" positives this year then we should know it's HGH

I read somewhere the other day that part of this agreement was if a player gives a BS excuse for the failed test, the NFL is now allowed to issue a correction.

That is exactly correct. It's a violation of the CBA to announce what a player tested positive for. Everytime you hear what a player tested positive for is a "leak" from either the team or the agent; hence, all the players that have tested positive for "adderall".

Even better. An off-season positive test for HGH gets you into the substance abuse program, no game day testing, and all blood samples will be destroyed after 90 days.
