A Point That Needs To Be Made

I've been reading Packer blog comments and forums and have been muttering the same two words at my screen over and over.

It's January.

Packer Nation's consternation over the Packers' defensive personnel is understandable, but people need to remember there's free agency, the draft and trades yet to be commenced. There's a lot of time between now and even training camp, let alone the first game of the 2009 season. Yes, I think Packer fans would be a bit calmer if Thompson's history didn't suggest that he is about to sit out free agency, trade down three times while drafting two more wide outs all while losing out on obtaining a star player via trade because he refuses to go one round higher in draft pick compensation.

However.

I think, unlike 99 percent of Packer Fandom, that Thompson more or less knows what he's doing. I have faith that the defensive personnel will be more than adequate for the 3-4 Capers intends to run by the time training camp comes around.

Read Mike Lombardi's take on the Packers transition to the 3-4. It made me excited.

I think the TT haters are just louder....and dumber, than the rest of Packer fans who have a bit of faith in his judgment.

Cole and Montgomery gone to FA (if they come back it willl only be after every other NFL team passes on them - does that inspire confidence). Harrell undergoing another back surgery. Pickett entering year 8 and was slowed by a chronic hamstring throughout 2008. Yes, Virginia we do have something to worry about.

Can't help it Franklin - it's just in my curmugeonly nature. Was it Maslow who proposed that "history" is the best predictor of future behavior?

TT has made seven acquisitons of D-Linemen in his four years as boss. Montgomery, never made it past #2 on the depth chart (mostly 3). Pickett a good FA signing and has paid off. He is now in year 8. Jason Hunter #3 on the depth chart for all 3 years. Johnnie Jolly is beginning to show some developmental progress. Hopefully, his suspension will not be too long. Justin Harrell, what can be said? Dave Tolleffson, cut and now a NYG reserve. Jeremy Thompson, had a good game or two, then spent the rest of the injured to one degree or another. Alfred Malone another teams throw away was signed before 2008. He was inauspicious to say the least.

So, what do we have here? Pickett good but aging. Jolly developing and good potential. Justin Harrell is not likely to be around unless a surgical miracle can be achieved. Thompson a strong unkown. The rest?

Even under the best of circumstances the Packers will have to add four new D-Linemen this year. Of course, we are worried.

That's cool, to each his own.

You make some valid points, but I think there is some hope for all these guys...including Harrell.

We shall see.

Interesting news from GB. Turgovic(sp) just signed on as Packer D-Line coach. He turned down the Panther offer to remain DC in Carolina. Now that gives me some comfort level.

If he wants to join Dom instead of being a DC that must mean Dom has told him that he will have the players. Why else would he do what he just did?

Good question, Ron ... a real good question. That one made my eyebrows stand up. Got my Packer Brain goin' schizo! Capers is one of three originators of the 3-4/Blitz and I really don't are if it takes even two years, let alone three... just as long as we keep at it - The Packers are now officially ahead of the NFL trend curve (only thing missing is the HC stops calling the plays on offense and lets the OC take that job - like Pittsburgh & Baltimore) NOW, it looks like I got MORE reading to do on this TRGOVAC guy.
