Bart Starr…one of the finest men to ever play professional sports. He is one of the reasons that the Packers are such a special franchise.

I met Mr. Starr the first time in 1961 at a church Father & Son banquet in Neenah, Wisconsin. I remember timidely shaking his hand and getting his autograph. He spoke at the banquet for no fee, just the banquet dinner. How times have changed.

In 2012, I met him once again when he was the recipient of the Mobile Alabama Drug Education Council’s annual award for the fight against drugs. He delivered one of his passionate speeches on leadership and stewardship. Afterward, I had the opportunity to tell him of our first meeting and his impact on myself and every young Packer fan back in the day. He was most gracious.

Lastly, the year after his death, my daughter (now a young mother with two toddler Green Bay Packer fans) was shopping at the Birmingham CostCo. Pushing a shopping cart in front of her was a frail, small, jet-black haired elderly woman. As a true Packer fan, my daughter instantly recognized her. She politely asked the attractive woman if she was Cherry Starr, Bart Starr’s wife. She said yes. They talked for 15 minutes. My daughter telling her all my boyhood memories of my hero - Bart Starr and our family pride in the Green Bay Packers. As they concluded, Mrs. Starr said she had something for my daughter. From her purse she handed a memorial bookmarker that was given to all who attended Bart Starr’s funeral service. As my daughter’s eyes teared, she hugged my daughter good-bye. My daughter was touched by her grace, strength and love for her husband. She wanted me to have that bookmark but I refused. That is a memento and story for her to pass on to continue our family love of a unique professional sport organization, the Green Bay Packers.

Younger Packer fans, that is the lasting legacy of strength and character that Bart and Cherry Starr left the Wisconsin community, the Green Bay Packer organization and Packer fans everywhere.

The exploits of he and his teammates on the gridiron are forever Packer history, but what I will also remember is the love, strength, selflessness and caring life of the husband and wife team of Bart and Cherry Starr.

GPG!
