Green Bay Packers history in the 21st century

Brett Favre announced his retirement on March 4, 2008, but a few months later, he decided to return to the National Football League. This turn of events caused quite a stir among the Green Bay Packers. A huge media frenzy ensued. All of this led to the trade of Brett Favre to the New York Jets. This enabled the Green Bay Packers to start the 2008 season with a new quarterback (Aaron Rodgers) who had been selected in the first round of the 2005 draft.

Aaron Rodgers was one of the Packers'  best players in his first season. His performances and statistics were on a par with those of Brett Favre. However, these performances didn't lead the franchise to the title, as they finished with a record of: 6 wins and 10 losses. One of the reasons for the team's poor performance was the numerous injuries suffered by the defense. As a result, the Green Bay Packers were forced to play with seven substitutes. The disappointing 2008 season led to the replacement of 8 head coaches, including defensive coordinator Bob Sanders, who was replaced by Dom Capers.

Before the start of the 2009 season, the Green Bay Packers made 2 significant draft selections: defensive tackle B.J. Raji (Boston College) and linebacker Clay Matthews III (USC). The team also switched from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense, which allowed the new draftees to make their mark and highlight their skills in the games.

This 2010 season was very memorable for Green Bay fans as the team had to overcome several injuries: Ryan Grant (running back) and Jermichael Finley (Tight End) were two of the players lost that were normally important parts of the offensive attack.

Still, the Packers fought their way into the playoffs in the final game of the regular season with a 10-3 victory over their sworn enemies (the Chicago Bears). The team continued it's streak of victories in the playoffs, winning games against :

-        Philadelphia Eagles (21-16).

-        Atlanta Falcons (48-21) with an incredible Aaron Rodgers performance (31/36 completions for 366 yards and 3 touchdowns).

-        The Chicago Bears again (21-14) in the Conference final.

The culmination of the season was when the Green Bay Packers won their 4th Super Bowl, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25. During the game, which took place at the Cowboys' new AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Aaron Rodgers led the offense and was voted MVP of the game, completing 24/39 passes for 304 yards and 3 touchdowns. The 2010 Super Bowl left a lasting impression on all Green Bay Packers fans. During the game, the team lost 2 major players: Donald Driver and Charles Woodson, but they persevered and brought back the Lombardi Trophy to Green Bay.

In 2011, the Green Bay Packers managed to win the first 12 games of the season. They then drew 7 games before suffering their first loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The team finished the regular season with 15 wins and one loss. This gave them the NFL's best total for the season and a berth in the Divisional Round. At the same time, the Green Bay Packers had the opportunity to play every playoff game at Lambeau Field. They had an excellent season, and were the logical favorite. However, this franchise lost its first playoff game on January 15, 2012 to the New York Giants by a score of 37-20. Thus, their hopes of building a lasting Super Bowl legacy ended abruptly.
