That's the word from McCarthy's end-of-year presser.
On the plus side, McCarthy said Spitz will get a look at center, which he should. He simply outplayed Wells at the position this year. He also called the idea that the team lacks veteran leadership and vocal leaders a 'convienient' excuse for the losing this past year.
He's right in a way -it is convenient and it's not as simplistic as "they need some leaders" and then they'll start winning. There are a myriad of things that went wrong and that need attention. But I think McCarthy recognizes the void in his roster.
We talked a lot about leadership, both with the veterans the young guys, and it was interesting. I think we have exceptional leadership by example. That was confirmed. Now, do we have the guy that's out there screaming and yelling and so forth? Maybe we don't.

Just read that Winston Moss said Brady Poppinga was the linebacking corps top performer. Hmmm...not sure if I want that guy as the D coordinator.
On the other hand, it's like saying you're the world's tallest midget.

Come on. That is coach speak and you know it. Read it as: "Our LBs were so bad this year, they made Brady look competent"
December 31, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I know, I just thought it was funny.....Hence, the midget comment.

I am not a big fan of Moss (don't hate the guy just don't see a reason to be impressed either) but I too saw nothing wrong with the article. Moss said multiple times that they didn't have a good year and needed to be a better job. He basically said Poppinga had the best year of all the LBs on a crew that had a very disappointing year. That isn't saying a whole lot.
December 31, 2008 at 12:50 pm
It was a thinly veiled challenge to AJ Hawk.

Agreed. If you look at Moss' quotes throughout the year, I don't think he's the worlds biggest Hawk fan...

While I don't know that a statement such as this completely disqualifies Moss for the DC position, it certainly isn't a mark in his favor. Either he thinks everyone else watching this team is a complete idiot, or he is. Perhaps both. It's one thing to say that Poppinga met expectations; that certainly can be true, if those expectations are not very high. But to claim that Poppinga had the best season of all the LBs is simply to state something that is not only untrue, but obviously so. Unless, I suppose, his job is to run away from the play as it develops and watch his teammates play defense. At that, he excelled.

Moss comment (about Brady) was avoidance as to why the whole LB Corps didn't perform better. Moss is in charge of technique, no? The reason they weren't better "is" because of their Coach and his method(s). Was Moss worrying about that next promotion, much like Mike Sherman? Does feel familiar, doesn't it!
[* Themes of what went wrong in close games? "A lot of it is execution, but we'll look at everything." Everyone will be evaluated.]
{above} Does he mean Coaches, as well? Or, just the Players (blame game about to happen again) Think Ed Donatel, only 'players' this time.

Off Topic - Thomas Jones hammers Favre for "blowing their playoff chances. He was lousy and cost us games." This is being reported by Sporting New Radio today.

I saw that. Plus there are other quotes from an anonymous player that are not flattering to BF.

C'mon guys, stay on topic...
Saw on another Blog that the best LB we had this year was Brandon Chillar - anyone want to distinguish the diff?

Chillar can cover and tackle. Not exceptionally well, but better than the rest.
January 02, 2009 at 01:12 am
I think Chillar did play well this year but if he's the best we have then our LBs as a group are not very good. I lobbied for more playing time for Bishop all year and still am. As I said a few days ago he's a playmaker. Needs more reps for sure but I hope he gets a legitimate shot next year. Hawk is terribly disappointing but I am fearful a 1st round pick will never be relegated to the bench. Barnett will not be full strength at the start of the season so Hawk will be in there, but I hope not in the middle. Prior to the draft/free agency I would say Hawk, Bishop and Chillar would be the way to go into camp.

Andrew - it is notable that one of the Packers best defensive performances, against the Colts, came with Hawk on the bench for all but a handful of plays.
As far as Bishop goes, I like him (as I wrote early in the year) but he looks absolutely lost in coverage. That's not saying he can't improve, but he's got a lot of work to do.
January 02, 2009 at 10:01 am
With TT and MM wasting a roster spot on Lansanah, can we expect big things from him?
Just heard Winston Moss will interview for Rams Head Coach job.
January 02, 2009 at 12:37 pm
You're absolutely right Aaron, he is lost in coverage. I believe he can improve tho, especially if he gets a legitimate shot. That play he made in the backfield on AP was potential that just can't be overlooked in my view. That's game changing ability
January 02, 2009 at 01:44 pm
I would agree with the Desmond Bishop opinion. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. You can't ask for more, as long as fundamentals are good, if not better than average.
My real worry is this - Winston Moss may (actually) be everything upper echelon in the NFL are saying about him. I don't know. Packer Media has kept him unde the radar from what I've been able to feret out. I do know that our LB's have played worse this year than they have in some time. Would that not reflect back on Winston in some manner?
Pending the Rams take him away, who would any of you "prefer" we get to take his place? Personally, my impression of the lackluster LB play this season is a direct reflection of "no attention paid" by the Coaches.
The argument can be scheming versus technique. Yet, if technique is sound, then scheming shouldn't be of any real detriment, no?
Opinions? Let's hear 'em!

Sorry for the dearth of posts - a wife and three girls will slow you down at holiday time. Couple that with Corey's work on the New Years Eve telecast, and it gets hard to be as voluminous as possible. Never fear - we are getting ready to commence the offseason ;)

I'm not a genius on defensive schemes by any stretch, but it seems to me that good technique is not enough to overcome outdated schemes. Aaron has authored good posts about the Sanders scheme and how outdated it is on several occasions.
The thing with Bishop is he describes himself as a guy who "flys around." I don't see that from the other LBs. Is it because they are told not to? Is it the "bend but don't break" defensive style (stay in your gaps, stay conservative)? I don't know the answer, but clearly the defense DID break this year, particularly as injuries piled up.
I don't know who might replace Moss if he leaves, but the bigger question in my mind is do we have the athletic talent to fit a more attacking scheme anyway? The current LB corp, which was supposed to be a strength of the defense in 08, sure leaves a lot of questions as we head into the off season

Mike Stock just retired...now all we have to do is fire the other guy, and we'll be all set.

apparently sanders is out the door shortly after stock as per profootballtalk. hip hip horaay.

dusty - the PFT report only cites the Press Gazette article that mentions that McCarthy hasn't made up his mind on Sanders. It is FAR from being a done deal.
January 02, 2009 at 10:01 pm
come on, you know it's coming. no team has ever kept a defensive coordinator after a losing season -- i think i saw that stat on this site as well.
