Packers Vs. Lions - 3 Plays That Make You Go Hmmm

Jersey Al picks out three thought-provoking plays from Sunday's game against the Lions

After re-watching the Packers game, here are three plays that made me go hmmm, for various reasons.

Jamaal:

I just want to show a little appreciation here for Jamaal Williams and a very important role he plays - blitz pickup on obvious passing downs. Here the Packers are on their first drive of the second half. After a penalty, the Packers find themselves with a 1st and 20. Williams is surveying the situation and sees LB Jamie Collins head towards the LOS just before the snap. Williams immediately slides over and picks up Collins, holding him up long enough to allow Rodgers to fire off a pass to Allen Lazard running a crosser through the area that Collins just vacated. The result is an easy 14 yard gain.

Why Aaron?

There's 3:47 left in the game and the Packers are killing the clock and driving towards what would be the game-sealing dagger touchdown. It's second and nine and Rodgers has Lazard wide open past the sticks for an easy first down throw. Lazard is even in his direct line of sight. But Rodgers goes for the big play (because chicks dig the long ball) and the drive stalls after Rodgers has to throw the ball away on the next play. Thank goodness for Mason Crosby..

Screens Kill:

They Lions dialed up a bevy of screens, pretty much all which were extremely successful. Here's one that didn't need to be if Redmond would just do the thing they teach in High School Football; If you're first in, force the play inside towards your pursuit. Redmond actually does a very good job diagnosing the play. He hands the crossing tight end off to Adrian Amos (who then hands him off the the linebacker) and as soon as he sees the linemen release, he charges towards the running back. So far so good. But then he pulls up for some inexplicable reason and sets himself up to be easily blocked to the inside, opening a nice lane down the sideline for the running back. If he had just kept going and crashed hard and low from the outside in, the running back would have had to cut inside to where Dean Lowry was waiting.

Al,

It's difficult to be to hard on AR, without him I would hate to think where this team would be, but when watching the game you could see Lazard WIDE open on the crosser and then AR throws up a jump ball to Adams. Why? we'll never know. It certainly is/was a play that make you go Hmmm though.

...and there was a lot of open field in front of Lazard, too. I don't think he scores, but he gets down to about the 10, gives the Packers a fresh set of downs, and this game is--apart from an untimely TO--over.

Lazard was the guy, but if he gets more air on the ball to Adams it is a TD. Al is correct. Maybe this is a conditioned response to go big and not move the chains from the McCarthy offense.? Moving the chains is Lazard's specialty, dating to his time at Iowa State.

Oh yeah, the McCarthy offense when he threw his 360 TDs with only 70 INTs. BOO!! It's hilarious how the ghost of McCarthy is still in the head of some posters.

More air and it needed to be thrown to the outside instead of so close to the defender. I am so used to AR's accuracy! Pretty good mechanics on that throw by AR, so that trope doesn't hunt.

Lazard probably doesn't score, that's fair. But lets not pigeon-hole him too much: one good stiff arm on the closest defender and he's got a chance. Lazard has a huge size advantage on DBs. Let the playmakers make plays.

On that last screen, I think that Redmond pulls up because he sees a big ole blocker heading right at him and is trying to find a way to get around that block.

Redmond did the scope of the TE and the hand off went to the LB, after that happens he has to crash to the RB.
Move fast to the gap before the OT rips him. No reading, attack.

the big guy doesn't prevent him from maintaining his outside leverage. Al's totally right, get outside and stay low. Lowery makes the play, second and long. views from either end zone are never broadcast but they really show what's happening side to side. GPG

Redmond isn't going to beat the OL or the other offensive linemen coming very often and at 205 pounds isn't going to stack and shed. He can try to knife through, but lacks the angle and instead breaks down, leaving himself in no-man's land. Since there were several coming, Redmond has to maintain outside leverage. This is in the Nagler/Herman podcast as well under the heading of trying to do too much rather than play fundamentals.

About the "Why Aaron" play, I noticed Rodgers passing up the easy shorter tosses a few times in the last game even when someone was wide open right in front of him.

Don't get me wrong, he's been taking the shorter passes at a higher rate than in the past, but he still, when given time, will look further down field for the bigger play. Sometimes it pays off big though, and a good QB should take a peek. It's in Rodgers DNA to go for the big strike. Especially if it's 17 on the other end.

Overall, I'm pleased with how Rodgers has managed the offense this year, but in the game situation GB was in against the Lions he should have hit Lazard and taken the easy first down. Then maybe none of the other game-ending nonsense wouldn't have occurred.

Al - when I saw Redmond’s play on the screenI thought exactly what you wrote, “force him inside”, exactly as were coached in HS. Trying to avoid the block is pointless. Just go low and give yourself up and let the inside pursuit make the play.

I’m am always amazed at how so many professional players so often forget some of the most basic techniques that are coached repeatedly at the HS and college levels. No excuse.

As for Rodgers, I think he knew it was second down so he took a shot with his best receiver who he saw had one on one coverage. He figured he still had 3rd down to make a first if the pass the Adams failed. He also could not have anticipated the 5 yard penalty which Crosby’s FG a little more difficult.

Rodgers is going to go for the big play when he has Adams one on one. Especially when he knows he has another down or two to work with. He figures Adams is going to win and he often does. I’m not saying I agree with it, it’s just how Rodgers plays the game. Thanks, Since ‘61

Yes, but two were tipped passes. How many times have fans seen the ball tipped in the air and held their breath waiting to see what happens?

Looks to me like AR just didn't have his normal inhuman accuracy on the pass to Davante. Thrown outside, it's a TD.

Edit: read splitpea below and have to agree and partially recant: GB only needed a first down to really salt away this game. TD would be great, but throwing the easy pass to Lazard results in a chip shot field goal at worst or new set of downs to try to get the TD, so that makes more sense.

AR cannot totally break his addiction to hero ball. The only explanation I can see is that short throws to Lazard don’t make the Sportcenter highlight reel and big throws to Davante do. As stated above, he has done it less than he has in the past. The trouble is, he saves it for inopportune times when a first down is really needed to salt away the game.

Really? 37 years old. In the league 16(?) years. Two league MVPs. A Super Bowl win/MVP. Highest single season and career QB rating. Best TD/INT ratio all time, and it's not even close.

And you think what's going through his mind on that play is to make an ESPN Sportcenter highlight reel?

Really?

Rodgers has actually done a good job of playing within the framework of the offense this season. Much better than I thought he would. He tried some hero ball against Tampa, but not much since. I have been pleasantly surprised. I always thought if Rodgers gets rid of the ball on schedule, and lets it rip from the pocket more, he can absolutely dice defenses up. And most importantly, he is going to be able to better avoid injury, which if he plays into his 40s as he says wants to do, he will have to more from the pocket. He is an assassin from the pocket. There are a few off schedule throws but not nearly as many. In doing so, I am not surprised Rodgers is the leading MVP candidate with the best passer rating in the league.

I think that it was actually absolute trust in #17 to make plays - with a dash of under thrown ball (the real poison of that play)

Did you see those touchdowns that Adams made against the bears? He had no right to make that catch in the end zone for a td- corner draped all over him like a scarf - but he did.

I think that if Rodgers had his time again he’d still take the same back shoulder shot, but with a better throw - as the matchup was the one that he wanted to see.

Play#2: Just about everybody was thinking the same thing. Lazard is streaking across the field wide open and could have easily made it inside the 10-yard line. This is where the magnetism towards Davante needs to be restrained. Play smart: work on the clock first, then either punch the ball in or set yourself up for an easy field goal.

I noticed the miss to Lazard during the game. To me that was a big deal. It's better to take the first down than to go fo a big gain. I saw that was a chance to score a TD and put the game out of reach. Crosby saved our butts. This play is a holdover from the McCarthy Era for Rodgers where he tried to do too much. Hopefully this is slowly going away

With Rodgers' passer rating and completion percentage soaring the way they are since the Tampa Bay game, it is extremely picky to choose one play where you think he could have made a better choice. The passer rating and completion percentage support his good decision making, not just in this game but in the previous 8 games, and really every game except TB. If he is passing up open routes that are shorter for longer throws, it must be working much of the time. Are we asking for perfection here?

WCPB, I hear ya, we so often ask for perfection from human beings who are making decisions under difficult split second circumstances. that said, I don't think it was made to be ultra critical, it was just a great example of the theme of the article and heck just for the opportunity to use the line - Chicks did the long ball....

i can be tough on writers and posters for just what your saying but being a long time reader of Mr Al's stuff he doesn't come off, to me, as a guy looking to make hay by being ultra critical.

Now if this was the prior 2-3 years I think it may of been a very appropriate issue to point out.

Rodgers Achilles heel has always been trying to push the ball too far down the field instead of just moving the chains and picking his spots to open it up. Our run game and ML Offensive system has enabled him to complete first downs at a higher rate because the first downs are more manageable 3rd and short which is a easier to accomplish, instead of winging it 10-30 yds to a WR for 3 incompletions . We are having less 3 and outs and throw aways than last year because Rodgers does not have to be superman on every play, he's been picking his spots instead. Sometimes the faster you score although you put up points it hurts your defense when they can't get a 3 and out. Notice the 3rd quarter we ate the clock up our Defense was rested. With our Defense that's just the way you want it. If Pettine would use more blitzing with the xtra DB's it would help also. I'm happier with Rodgers this year than I have ever been. He has a coach who schemes people open and Rodgers is executing the system at a very high level. Usually when our offense stalls it's because of not taking the easy completion. I believe that's the point. The OL has done extremely well especially with the injuries that have happened. We have a great #1 WR, a couple complementary WR's, 2 good RB's and a couple good TE's.

I saw Rodgers taking the clock down to 1 second over and over again. That's always been a pet peeve of mine. I know he's the master of the hard count but Detrout was disciplined unlike our defense who committed way too many penalties.

Biggest improvement from Rodgers IMO in 2020 is not throwing the ball away. 54 throwaway in 2018 by far the most ever in the NFL. I credit MLF scheming WRers open and our outstanding OL giving Rodgers time to throw. The team goes as far as Rodgers can carry us and in 2020 he's the MVP.

If Rodgers mixes in quicker snaps along with taking the clock down to one second on other plays, that could really keep the defense guessing and off balance -- especially when our offense is only a couple of yards from a touchdown.

He is also burning clock. Why go quick count when you want to salt the game away? Should have hit Lazard. LaFleur has given him an offense with the west coast fundamentals tossed in some Mouse Davis and Lavell Edwards. Hit the open guy quickly on timing and make the LBs watch everybody, if they crash fast with the dog, burn them.

Well AR is who he is. From time to time he shows unpatience which is strange for the player of his experience.

That particular 2nd down might finished with TD if Aaron threw the precise pass. That particular throw wasn't good one and Davante played defence, becausr ball was at the hands of CB.

It happens from time to time. And I belive we can live with that, because of Aaron make this team much better with his intelligence, experience and physical capabilities.
Sometime his decisions produce unwilling loses, like at Indianopolis, where he had easy TD if he threw the ball to Big Bob, not forcing the ball to Davante.

But his mistakes are rare and we have to takenthem, because he brings us lot of joy.

I have no problem in general, Adams would more than likely have caught that pass had it been in the right place. Decent idea, just the execution of the pass was a little off for once.

At any other time in the game I would say no basis to complain. At that point, perhaps the killer first down would have been statistically a better choice, however, but I think it says a lot about Rodgers belief in himself and Adams. Just this time it didn’t quite come out as planned.

The Packers were charging hard upfield with their front 4 all game long. They weren't playing screen at all...at least not early.

Watch that play again...the front 4 aren't playing screen at all, and when Amos takes a couple steps with Hockenson (before passing him off), he's cleared out and all that's left is Redmond. 3 big bodies and one DB? Exactly how an offense draws those up.

I’d never blame AR for throwing to Davante one on one with a step heading to the end zone. I don’t care who’s wide open underneath. It was just a bad throw. It’s a td with an accurate throw. I only blame AR hero ball when throwing into double coverage with a check down open underneath. That he hasn’t done much of this year.

The GIF doesn't really show it, but I remember the replay in the game. Adams blew bast the CB and had about 1-2 yards separation on the defender. The problem on the play, in my mind, isn't the decision, but that Rodgers threw it short which held up Adams and turned it into a jump ball. If Rodgers throws it on the left shoulder and leads him more, it's a TD.

On those sweeps, end arounds, and screens we are exposed because we are weak with those types of players including missing Raven Greene. A lot of our tackling leaves much to be desired especially with our D backs. I would hope that we target those hybrid middle linebackers / big Dback types - Troy Polo's guys.

AR has done this going to Adams over the easier open guys at times. Adams will almost always make the catch - but AR needs to give his head a shake as well and I am sure he does in the game reviews that they do. I believe that the Tampa game pick 6 was one of those - Adams will win on that route but only if he has blown by those D backs a few times and since he was just back from injury they were probably sitting on that route.

I agree - and I just dont think that we need to spend top picks to get somebody - If it is Dline or middle linebackers = we might have to spend somebody up near 30 or early to get a Clay Matthews type. But those deals dont always work out. I am more of a move on the scouting end. For some reason back into the TT days we could not pick out good quarterbacks as back ups - Look at Matt Flynn after we wasted a high pick on Brian Brohm. The Vince Biegle draft class was poor starting with him. My point is that the Ravens and the Steelers all seem to have a good sense on who plays really tough - from running back to safeties, you got to be willing to get your nose dirty - hit hard - make tackles. I dont like Smith from the Vikes but those types of guys get your attention and we hardly have any of those on the back end or in the middle of our line-up. He was a first rounder but Andrew Sendejo was also a hard hitter and was a free agent- he has bounced around but he hits hard. I just think that maybe we are overlooking guys due to our scouting philosophy.

I'm very surprised that other teams have not screened the Packers defense more. This defense does have a tendency to over commit at times on passing downs. Good catch Al on Redmond. He froze for a second seeing that big guy in front of him, and that's all it took. No matter how many times a player is taught to play down hill, it goes against human nature to do so. (Kind of like running to the sound of gun fire) If one needed a reason why J. Williams gets so many snaps, his ability to protect the QB from blitz and dog schemes is rare. In a quarterback centric league, somebody is going to pay him. I hope that someone is the Packers. The point about Rodgers taking the shot is correct. While other commenters have pointed out the Rodgers to Adams is on another level, this offense is built on moving the chains and exhausting a defense. Something that Rodgers has done well this year.

In the snap count article I alluded to another play wherein Jamaal cut blocked a blitzing defender. That play plus the one shown in this article = two opportunities for a team's QB to make a play. There may be other instances of Jamaal picking up defenders in pass pro.

That's worth money in the NFL, and more when it is combined with efficient pass catching ability and improved running including the ability to get the first down on 3rd and one. It might not be a block buster contract but Williams will be employed in the NFL in 2021.

Third quarter Packers ran a lot of drag routes against the Lions who were blitzing both ILB and SS. Normally it takes Rodgers 4 seconds to drop back and throw. But even with the increased pressure he had 5 sometimes up to 7 seconds before he had to move with in the pocket. That was Williams buying Rodgers the extra three seconds allowing the slot WR or TE to slide into the void created by the blitzing ILB or SS. Only a RB who has a complete understanding of this offense can do that. Jamaal has entered John Kuhn territory. In doing so, his value has shot up, and he is still fairly young. While the Packers have limited Cap space, making a run for the RB who has become Rodgers personal protector is a no brainier. As you say TGR, someone in this league is going to pay him. I rather it be the Packers.

That decision by Aaron Rodgers to not pass to the wide open Lazard could have cost us the game just as much as the big runback by Detroit on the kickoff after Crosby's field goal.
That kind kind of questionable decision-making may indeed help to explain the difference in Super Bowls between Rodgers and Tom Brady (as noted in a comment above).
On the play, even if Davante Adams has a step or two of separation, it seems a harder throw to him than to Allan Lazard.
Now to be fair to Rodgers, he has been so great this year that this is not a play to dwell on. With it being second down, he did have another play to convert a first down to retain possession. All-in-all, maybe it's a tougher decision between Davante and Lazard than at first sight.
However, it's important to note the decision because it may mean the difference between a Super Bowl this season or not.
Consider the game against the Buccaneers, when after a fast start by the Packers, things turned badly in a hurry, and we were eventually trounced..
I could be wrong, but I was wondering if Rodgers panicked a little against the Bucs after their quick scores turned the momentum of the game.
It was still early enough, and the game was still close enough, that Rodgers could have brought the Packers back gradually.
Instead it seems he went too much for the long strikes rather than the sustained drives of moving the chains.
This was especially bad as a tactic because the Bucs were now pumped up, and their pass rush was harassing Rodgers. The short throws were the way to go.
If I'm mostly right about what happened against the Bucs -- which is one of the rare instances of the Packers being in a really tough spot this season -- then it's critical that Rodgers learn from that experience to keep calm in adversity, and take the easier passes for the most part, especially in critical situations.
Now, to keep this balanced, remember Rodgers last season in the playoffs against the Seahawks converting a clutch play late with a wonderful throw downfield to Adams (against Richard Sherman).
In other words, it's good for Rodgers to take chances at times, and to be daring. It's also good for him to be careful. To be both in the same quarterback is the great challenge.
These are quick decisions, and I don't want Rodgers thinking overly much out there. I'd rather have him make an occasional mistake than to be too hesitant.
Rodgers is so great right now -- and apparently improving on his decision making significantly in taking the shorter throws more often -- that I don't want to mess him up by being too demanding.
However, if he can refine his craft as a quarterback even a little more, I'd encourage him to do so.
As a huge fan of Aaron Rodgers, I truly want all the best for him, on and off the field. and only offer these words if they are accurate and appropriate and ultimately helpful. I know he has to ultimately decide what's best for him in his overall game.
We always want improvement for the Packers (and also for ourselves, in whatever we do). Perhaps the key to getting better at something is to remember the positive things much more often than the negative.
So I encourage Aaron to perhaps remember ten of his excellent plays for every poor one -- or even debatable one.
Again, Aaron Rodgers is fantastic! Whatever his personal ways in striving for his best results as the leader of the Pack, I'm rooting for him!!!

"However, if he can refine his craft as a quarterback even a little more, I'd encourage him to do so."

Sometimes fans expectations on players is beyond my understanding. Refine his craft as a quarterback better? His projections for this year:

69.6 comp percentage...4,535 yds....8.2 yds per attempt....48TDs/5INTs...119.7 Rating

I do not understand why large number of people can not accept that everyone can have a bad day.

It happens. look the teams that beat Saints in their 2 other loses. Or who beat Steelers or KC. It happen.

What you can do about that. Only to not let to continue from one to another week...

For Pete's sake, I do tend to go long at times.
Please pardon me. This comment was especially long because I was trying to be nuanced in a delicate matter.
Rodgers has been so excellent that I don't want to mess him up. Perfectionism is unproductive, as well as unhealthy and unhappy.
Also, it's not about any abrupt changes for Rodgers, but bringing out the best of who he is.
As for myself, I do hope to make the shorter comments for the most part.

It’s a fair point. I think actually you are right in some respects versus Tampa. In this case I’m pretty sure Rodgers saw the pass to Adams as a gimme. Let’s face it he is, they are that good. In the end he just under threw it enough for it not to pan out. He is great not omnipotent.

As a former Eng. teacher ,that was a grade A+ essay( very good opening and closing and support after). Just kidding about length , I realize that it's not easy to explain even a slight criticism of Rogers.

Great pickup by Williams because Turner doesn't even see the blitz and should have helped. That's why Redmond is not a starter, but Kings attempted tackle where he lowered his head was comical and sad at the same time. We could use a solid tackler similar to Greene but with a bit more size and durability, but I guess so do most teams. I watched last night's game between two possible playoff teams and don't remember any defense being played.

Redmond plays well deep. He’s a corner type not an ILB type. And that’s part of the problem of the loss of Greene. No comparable replacement. Against a team focused on passing, I get the approach. Against a run team we need a different approach (that I fear we won’t get).

On the ARod critique I think it would be useful if someone, not me!, would take a look at how many times he went to the underneath guy and moved the chains instead of going deep even if it looked like he had a shot.

As for Williams he has been a great blocker from day one. Jones has become a decent one but Jamaal just really likes to do it it seems.

I love it when film is provided along with the analysis. It helps a nube like me get the most out of it. thanks for going the extra mile.

Ya, poor decision by Arod, really multiplied by the timing/situation in which he did it. Did anyone ask him what his thought was on the play? I bet the coaches did in the film room. Gutsy question for a Packer media guy to ask.

Great catch on redmen, It, to me, is just one example of how the packers defensive players make way too many poor decisions. be it Z and Preston and run containment or the ILB crew on gap plugging. Does anyone really expect petinne to come out and throw his guys under the bus.

I'm hopeful on Jamall only because of the Market, 20201 Cap, and the overall view on paying Rb's. I don't see him as a starter, maybe someone in the league will and will pay him, for his sake I hope so, but as a back-up in GB, even as a Timeshare guy with Dillon he has a great deal of value. Might be a situation where his best option, where he brings the most value is GB and they give him an above Market contract for a backup RB. I assume that market isn't a cap killer. Just hoping. I wouldn't be thrilled putting all my eggs in an unproven RB w/o much behind him.

Aaron Jones dumped his agent and signed up with Rosenhaus. He will not be back in Packerland.

If he signed with dipstick Drew - not sure that we want him. Unless DR has changed from his days with his other "CLASSY " guys like TO Chad Johnson Warren the Sapp. He now has Antonio Brown - give me a break. Jones just went down in my opinion. Highly doubt GB gets any type of home town discount.

Just wanted to mention Vernon Scott made some plays in his limited snaps if you have an opportunity to view the game again, I think he is out TCU , maybe some depth for Raven Greene hopefully .

Been my hope since we drafted him. Bigger physical Safety type. Rather like Martin though, Pettine has been reluctant to give him snaps. As a result, I don’t know if he has the instincts and awareness to play that role yet. I hope you are right.

I think most of us would love to keep both Jamaal and Jones and I don't think it's out of the question. Dillon as a quality back-up/insurance for the next couple of years isn't bad. I know the feeling is you can always find a RB late in the draft, but if we're already solid with these three it allows us to look for that DL or ILB we so desperately need. Jones really really wants to stay. His new agents will ask for the moon but the kid might give GB a home discount. I love Jamaal, but Jones is a top ten RB and neither Dillon nor Jamaal are talented enough to replace him as full-time starters. I think Linsley, King, Kirksey, P. Smith, and a few others won't be back which is why I believe there's an outside chance both Williams AND Jones are re-signed. They make a truly great duo and are a huge reason for the great offense this year. Rodgers and LaFleur both know that. Jamaal and Jones are character guys, hugely popular in the locker room, who bring a lot of enthusiasm to the team. If I'm the GM I try to keep them both. Hornung and Taylor stayed together, why not Jones and Williams?

Yes, but we don't want to keep a second round talent on the bench. I believe with one year of learning and resting the body , he'll be more than ready. There will be talent available in free agency if Jones's contract can't be worked out.(Drake,Bell)

It looks that way and a nice variety of traits. Some bruisers - scatt backs - 2rd down specialists. workhorses.

I'm clueless if Jamal or Jones will be back. It really comes down to $'s likely using a test the market and let us know approach. Dillon wasn't drafted to sit in year 2. He may become the #1 RB with the majority of early downs and Jones could be the 3rd down / passing back. Could still weight it anyway you want - majority to Jones. Both can be 3 down backs. Not sure as I see Jones as a teams workhorse with his size and injury history. But that role doesn't get paid top 5 money and its still a steep price after the top 5. I really could see him being disappointed in the market, what is Jones expectations? What did he expect his agent to do by now if the Packers aren't buying. I wonder if his agent was telling him something he didn't want to hear. Strictly brainstorming, Hope all the best for Both Aaron and Jamal.

Drake won't come much cheaper than Jones and Bell is on his last legs. As for rookies, you're not taking one in the first 3 rounds so it's a crapshoot vs a top ten RB already in hand. I'd resign Jones for sure and even Jamaal to solidify that position for a few years. Dillon may or may not be able to replace Jones, but why not have him as an insurance policy? Who is the must sign we have to keep over Jones?

About the "why Aaron" play, I think Rodgers quickly saw Adams' advantage over CB and simply missed a pitch that normally doesn't miss.
About the "Screens Kill" play, I think it is a typical mistake to report to the lack of aggression and therefore to the attitude that sets the DC. Why Pettine ????? Fire fire fire
Greetings to everyone from Siena. Go Pack Go

This is just a tidbit from OTC by Nick rather than Jason Fitzgerald:

If Jaire Alexander earns a pro bowl nod, his 5th year option salary will increase by $2.976M from $9.89M to $12.869M.

Yes, that increase will be factored in even if he is extended, which probably won't happen in 2021, but will prior to his 5th season in 2022. BTW, I don't see how the Packers extend him this offseason without roughly doubling his 2021 cap hit, something they can't afford to do.
