Packers 42 Lions 21: Game Balls and Lame Calls

This time defense closes the game out as Pack romps past overmatched Lions.

If there were ever any doubt as to how valuable Packer fans who pack Lambeau Field are to the team, it became painfully obvious Sunday. With Lambeau empty and no energy coming from the stands, the Packers came out flat as a pancake against the Lions. As a result Detroit dominated the first quarter on their way to a 14 to 3 lead.

But eventually superior talent will rise to the top. The defense tightened up, allowing just seven more points the rest of the way, and the Big Green Machine offense cranked into high gear, led by a career day from Aaron Jones. The Lions. missing six starters, simply couldn't keep pace and Green Bay rolled to a 42 to 21 victory and an impressive 2-0 start. With the understanding that you could give a game ball to Aaron Rodgers after every Packer victory, let's recognize some of the other key players.

GAME BALLS

Aaron Jones

You have to start here.   Jones had plenty of opportunities to model those shades he is endorsing.   He ran for a career high 168 yards, the biggest of which was a 75 yard TD sprint on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.   By the way, one of the reasons Jones wasn't drafted until the 5th round was because scouts doubted his breakaway speed.   Say what?   Did you see him pull away from the Lions secondary once in the open field?   Number 33 added 68 receiving yards including an outstanding catch along the boundary.   Put three more touchdowns on his scorecard.   We're talking all pro level play so far.   He's earning himself a boatload of money on his next contract.   I just hope the Packers are still writing his checks.

Rick Wagner, Corey Linsley and Elgton Jenkins

Any time a running back goes off the way Jones did Sunday there has to be some hosses upfront doing great work.    I was especially impressed with Wagner, who didn't allow any sacks and blocked well in the running game.   Linsley and Jenkins combined beautifully to open the big hole on Jones 75 yard TD.    I was going to include Lucas Patrick in this award until he stopped a drive with a holding penalty and then stopped another one by allowing a sack which knocked us out of field goal range.   Bakh had a drive halting holding penalty as well, but as a whole the Oline had another very good game.

Chandon Sullivan

It wasn't just his pick six, which was an outstanding play, but Sullivan also defensed at least two passes and always seemed to be around the ball.   If the defense is truly going to get better, Chandon is one of the guys who has to take that step, and so far he's coming through.

Rashan Gary

Okay, I'm gettin' excited here.   Gary is beginning to look like that scary player the coaches envisioned when he was taken in the first round last year.   This was certainly not the best offensive line he will play against, but his quickness off the snap and strength through contact can be eye-popping at times.   The way he split a double team on one of his two sacks had to put an I-told-you-so smile on Brian Gutekunst's face.

J. K. Scott

Yeah I'm giving one to the punter.   He put two down inside the ten, and should have had one downed on the one but the coverage team couldn't find the ball before it rolled into the end zone.   Making the Lions work the long field was an under the radar contribution in this game.

Mike Pettine

Ding me for this one if you must, but Pettine got this defense to show some emotion and energy after the slow start.   He also found an effective strategy to keep the Lions offense stalled late in the game by using one defensive lineman (Keke) and filling in the rest with his array of impressive linebackers.

LAME CALLS

Preston Smith's Penalty

His decision to try to time the snap and getting tagged for a five yard penalty allowed the Lions to eschew a punt and attempt a possible momentum-changing field goal on the last play of the half.   Thankfully the kick was missed.

Matt LaFleur's Time Out

Rodgers pass to Robert Tonyan would have been a first and goal and possibly a score if Tonyan had broken the tackle, but LaFleur called time out an instant before the play.   Rodgers was visibly upset as cameras caught him uttering a nasty word while glaring at the sideline.

The Decision to Allow No Fans

Several NFL teams, including the Chiefs, Browns, Broncos, Cowboys and Jaguars, have been able to let at least some quantity of fans into their games.   I get the Packers are erring on the side of safety, but it seems that allowing five to ten thousand folks into the stadium should be doable, and the difference in atmosphere at Lambeau would be palpable.

SHORT YARDAGE

• Marquez Valdes-Scantling is a solid honorable mention.   After taking two hard shots on throws along the boundary, he hung in there and came back to grab 3 for 64.   And even though he couldn't come down in bounds, that catch on the sideline was awesome!

• If you're wondering why Rodgers hasn't been throwing the ball to Jace Sternberger, you're probably not wondering any more.   Two more terrible drops on wide open plays.

• After featuring the jet sweep prominently last week against the Vikings, not a single jet sweep hand-off or shovel pass this week.   Keep 'em guessing MLF.

• A Josh Jackson sighting!   How about his perfect coverage on the long ball to Ty Johnson in the 4th quarter?

• Last year's good fortune with injuries is not carrying over.    Fingers crossed that injuries to Davante Adams, Corey Linsley and Tyler Ervin are not serious.

• Best nickname ever:   Will Redmond...they call him "Lego" because he fits in so many places.

THEY SAID IT

Aaron Rodgers:   "Obviously we have some playmakers on the team and number 33 is a special player, and give the offensive line a lot of credit, just the way they blocked upfront."

Rashan Gary:   "At the end of the day we go to war for each other.   We give each other energy.   Right now we're not focused on having fans.   We're focused on playing for one another."

Rick Wagner:   "It's definitely a weird situation to go against some of your friends from previous years.....felt good playing against them and have a lot of respect for that organization."

Chandon Sullivan:   (on his first Lambeau Leap) "It was an incredible feeling to get to do it in a game.   Although there were no fans, me and my teammates still made the best of it so it was a blessing."

Matt LaFleur:   "There's so much to improve on.   Most notably I'm upset with myself for some of those red zone calls."

"but it seems that"

Seams like it how? The numbers right now are staggering. I'm proud the Packers have put peoples safety over profit. They are not a small business that must open so they don't fail. They've got plenty of money and can open fully when the numbers prove it's safe. Not when it "seams that" they should to someone who is not educated in epidemiology.

Honest self-criticism from a coach? Unheard of!

" If you're wondering why Rodgers hasn't been throwing the ball to Jace Sternberger, you're probably not wondering any more. Two more terrible drops on wide open plays."

If it's possible for a guy who has run so few routes to have the yips, it sure looks like he does.

Yes, I fing love this guy, and the players do too. Happy for MM to have a second chance in TX, but we have the right guy for this time in history, and I love MM, but his message had gone stale. ML keeps impressing, and the team is buying in big time, see Gary's comment, he sounds like a war vet, "fighting for each other."

I've been a little disappointed in the secondary as a whole. I thought the safeties would have been a position of strength, but both have had their share of mistakes. They are shakey at best. Hopefully they solidify and savage takes the next step. Haha kinda got stuck at this position and never improved.

Most teams have to rely on rub routes and crossing patterns to get open on man coverage, but I've been seeing a lot of separation, mostly on sullivan and king, from just good route running.

Sullivan has a difficult outing week one but yesterday it seemed to click at some point in the first half. Not only the pick 6 but general defensive acumen.

King has shut down his man thus far. I don’t think that would be the case if you are right. I have not noticed it.

Sternberger needs to get in the right place physically and mentally. At the moment he looks rusty or overwhelmed in the passing game: those were mental errors. Tonyan is starting to look like a TE though (I’m not referring to his TD). Sternberger has time.

Hard to tell without seeing the whole field, when all 22 comes out I’m going to see how Savage, Amos and King were playing. Last week I watched Gary and based on what I saw this weeks production by him didn’t surprise me. He has added a couple of moves to his arsenal.

It’s not as though Stafford and his passing game suck. We are playing pretty good pass defense on a huge percentage of plays. Even though they only had the ball for 25 minutes, they threw it 33 times for some yards. But not points after their second drive, scoring a garbage time TD in the fourth.

And our pass defense scored a TD

The story of this game, IMO, is the 300+ yards our RBs provided, run and pass. I’d be willing to bet than any time your backs put up that much yardage.....without a turnover......you are going to win

This offense keeps their offense off the field.

Watch that first pass play to TJ hockenson (maybe the 2nd play of the game). I think they were in 3-4. Savage is in the box and tells amos he has TJ. It looks like it's man across the board from the broadcast. Amos gave him all the room in the world and had lazy coverage. Probably over 8 yards when TJ takes the route outside. When TJ makes the easy catch, amos hardly tries on the failed tackle attempt. Both looked pretty lazy on the play. I saw a few plays like that in coverage from Amos. Defense is all about effort. I really dislike seeing a lack of it.

I agree, I've been a little disappointed with Amos and Savage. When you look at the number of snaps played by the starters and compare that to a normal season, you're looking at preseason plus one regular season game at this point. They lose the ability to grind on things between limited preseason snaps under these circumstances. They'll have to be better next week against the Saints, especially if Thomas is cleared to play.

Give Sternberger a little bit of a break. He is a second year player ya know. As has been said here a multiple occasions Adams had a stinker his second year with multiple drops. MVS "maybe" getting over his yips...so please be patient. I can just see a guy like this get cut early and end on one of our rivals and he comes back to bite the Packers in the you know what!

Yes D Adams had a bad case of the sophmore slump in year 2. However he also had a pretty solid rookie year.
So far Sternberger has been as effective on O, as Montravious Adams has been on D. It is not time to panic yet, but its not looking good.

Demon, I think Adams problems his sophomore year was more due to injuries and folks felt it was a slump. It was obvious to me he was going to be great. That’s why people have to give MVS a break on last year as he was playing with injuries the second half of the year. Is MVS another Adams, no, they are very different type of receiver, but you can see his potential to be very good player. If he continues to improve he is the field stretching WR we have been looking for. This week we will really find out how good our offense can be.

Are you seriously comparing Sternberger’s situation to Montravious Adams? C’mon, that’s not even close to a fair comparison.

Yeah, MA has spent some time on IR too, but Sternberger missed half his rookie season on IR, didn’t get any off season program this year, and missed half of training camp with COVID. And as a TE, which is a notoriously difficult position at which to make the jump from college ball to the NFL.

Give Sternberger time. He has the tools.

Good recap Ken. Grateful for a 2-0 start and some of the sunshine that this team is showing. Cautiously optimistic with Rodgers and the new offensive scheme.

But - I am going to pump the brakes on the run away excitement. We played two shitty teams. The Lions were missing 5 solid starters and NFL coaches so yeah for the Packers. Why the Lions didn't keep pounding the ball left is a mystery. When we play a team with a solid O-line it will not be pretty. Getting way out in front of teams is our best strategy, allowing us to unplug weak D-line personnel and throw pass rushers at these lesser offenses. Let's hope that Rodgers can keep humming and the opponents remain inept.

Maybe the 13-3 Gods have stuck around and us atheists just refuse to believe.

Phill......

We’ve done 50,000,000 tests. About 10% have been positive. That’s 5,000,000. About 20% of these people have been sick enough to require a hospital. That’s 1,000,000 Most recover.

1,000,000 out of 330,000,000 million is 0.3%. That is your chance of catching the virus and being sick enough to need a hospital. That’s 3 people in a thousand. I grew up in a town of 10,000 people so that would be about 30 people with a median age of 77.

Surely, if you lived in this town, you would agree that we should close bars, churches, parks, gyms and schools to prevent this. Some bankruptcies and suicides area small price to pay.....right?

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Since the beginning, this has been about power and control. That’s why the politicians are fighting over this.

Keep your distance, wash your hands, and don’t stick your dirty finger into your eyes, mouth, or nose. If you want to wear a mask, that’s fine. The rest of this is an overreaction, IMO.

Sorry but Pettine does not deserve a game ball. By all accounts it was LaFleurs halftime speech/ball busting that got the defensive and Pettine on track. More then anything else just look at how the D played in the 4th quarter compared to the last drive in the 1st half. On that last drive the D just gave them like 40 yards in two plays because they went back to prevent and gifted them a field goal opportunity. Then MLF got on them at halftime and they looked like a different team. And guess what, no more prevent! I don't know if there are more then 2-3 coaches in the NFL that I would take over MLF right now.

Game Balls:

LaFleur -
His game planning/play calling has been much improved in year 2. We are starting to see more of what his vision for the offense looks like. But the part I really liked was the report at halftime that said he was going to have talk with the defense about playing with more urgency. The defense came out in the 2nd half and definitely played with more urgency,

Gary -
He has already forced 2 interceptions this year. He has been getting pressure on the QB and yesterday he was credited with 1.5 sacks. This front with Clark when he gets healthy can definitely be a scary front. Gary is a huge reason why.

OL -
They don't get enough love. They have been absolutely terrific. And that is including the shuffling around of players. Between creating good running lanes and not allowing Rodgers to get hurried or rushed has been a very good thing!

Lame Calls:

Dropped passes -
Our offense scored 43 points last week and 35 points this week. There is still a lot of room to improve. The dropped passes is something that while it hasn't hurt them these first 2 games, it is something that definitely could cost them in a game. They need to catch the passes that are catchable. In 2 games there are 10+ passes that were dropped. 2 of which would have been TD's. Last week MVS and this week Sternberger dropped almost identical passes that would have been first downs and would have been 15+ yard gains.
Rodgers has been off to a very strong start to the season. But if you add 10 catches for 150-200 more yards, and at least 2 TD's, his numbers look insane. His numbers right now through 2 games are 50-74 for 604 yards and 6 TD's. If he adds 10 catches, 150 yards and 2 TD's his numbers would be 60-74 (81%) for 754 yards and 8 TD's. Those are insane numbers.
The drops haven't cost us games in the first 2 games, but it definitely could. Time to hit the jugs machine!

Yep. Look up the top 100 pass catching percentages from last year.
There isn't a WR until 19 and that's at barely 80%. The next is 78% from WR. Obviously TEs and RBs have the highest percentages in the mid to upper 80s or more.

Davante was 85th and Lazard 81st last year, and both had catch percentages of 67% and change.

LaFleur said there were 6 drops among the 12 misses, but I had 6 on Rodgers, 4 on intended targets, and graded 2 as great defensive plays. It also seemed to me that the statistician made a mistake and charged MVS with a target on the one he caught OB on the boundary (but got a penalty that should have negated it). Not sure if that one should have been on him or Rodgers.

If MVS hadn't dropped the easy ones he has so far, he'd be in quite elite territory in pass catching percent. He'd still rank in the top 100 with his current percentage.

I think catch percentage is influenced by things other than drops. For example, if Rodgers throws it away in your general direction instead of taking a sack, it counts against your catch %.

Here’s the deal: We’re not taking sacks, we’re not turning it over. We’re not perfect but we’re staying on the field and we’re scoring points

Other than the one long run by Peterson, the run defense held pretty darn well. They had 89 yards rushing with 4.2 YPC. Take away the 24 yard run by AD at the end of the first quarter and the run defense did alright. And that's without Kenny Clark.

All true - but this is kind of deceptive since GB putting up 14 points on each side of halftime + the pick six basically eliminated the run game.

The offense being our best run defense will work fine against most opponents, but the teams that are built on stout defenses + ground attacks will continue to give the Packers issues until they show they can stop the run without completely selling out and loading the box.

He's keeping defenses honest, at least. You could see last year after the Raiders game that teams were going to do everything they could to eliminate Jones from the game plan. Now we have another receiver that can potentially punish teams if they decide to stack the box, which is going to give GB pretty favorable defensive fronts to take what they want and keep everyone on their toes. I personally can't wait till an opposing defense stacks 8-9 guys to stop the run and GB counters with the Dillon/Deguara sledgehammer - should be absolutely demoralizing.

Jones had a very heavy box against the vikings and he was kept pretty quiet.

Also, glad the officials were calling the defensive grabs and holds on our receivers. It sets a precedent for the rest of the season. However, this season we might just be able to pound the rock if that happens.

We can get away with drops against these subpar secondaries but next week we got Lattimore and Jack Rabbit and some two pretty good safeties we gotta shore that up. Also the run def still seems pretty meh to me back-to-back TDs to end the half and start the third put the Lions in a panic. I must say I’m getting less concerned about the offense despite the competition they just seem to flow better unlike last year against these same teams where we’d get 2-3 drives of brilliance then nothing. Anyone enjoying the Packers kinda being a low key team?

I'm more concerned with the OL. Not happy with that Right side yet. The OL is the key to the next Game.

Yeah Cam Jordan is no joke, if Hunter had played in the Vikings game and the kept him clean I’d feel a little better.

Only sacked once in 2 games. I bet AR likes that.

It is pretty evident that the Pack D is not very good until the offense forces the other team to use less of its playbook. So why not take the ball if they win the toss rather than defer? If that leads to points along with time off the clock, well, looks like a good thing for the Pack. Running your first play down some points puts an edge on things.

I kinda like getting the ball in second half after possibly getting a TD or at least a FG before. I mean getting those stops is part of the reason the lead is able to be built against the Vikes the Packers couldn’t capitalize in the red zone it was two big defensive plays that swung momentum even this game Sullivan’s pick 6 busted the game open.

Usually, I don’t mind deferring at home because under normal circumstances you have the home crowd behind you. But on the road I prefer to take the ball and hopefully drive for a score and neutralize the opponents home crowd.
Not sure how much it matters this season.
Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since ‘61

Lame call for the coach calling a time out just prior to a crucial play? Ummm... no. He’s the head coach.

Game Balls: Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones, MVS, Rashan Gary and C. Sullivan
Lame Calls: Dropped passes, especially by Sternberger and injuries.

We have been out scoring our opponents significantly. But in a close game, likely against the Saints, those dropped passes could be the difference in the game. Go Pack Go. Thanks, Since ‘61

I think the Saints game will be a horse race game/gonzo scoring affair similar to when the Chiefs/Rams matched up a couple years ago. Wouldn't surprise me at all if we see 100 pass attempts between the two QBs.

The 49ers game, though, is a different story, and I think any miscues there could decide the game.

He can catch. On one play he heard footsteps and was afraid to get hit. On the other, he knew he was in the clear and--like MVS last week on one of his--looked up field before he pulled the ball in.

Those are minor technical issues that I hope can be fixed (though maybe he is playing more afraid at NFL speed and size). His hands were great in college. It was concentration on one and fear on the other.

Lame Balls: MLF and Fox. I thought it was strange the half time report that MLF was going to yell at the defense. Weird third hand stuff. Frankly, I have a hard time believing with how many adjustments both groups have to make in what little time they have at half time. Called time out: Man or man, I thought Rodgers was going over about to go over and punch MLF out for a second. It's all about the play calling. LaFleur was getting late in getting in the call play to Rodgers as the game rolled into second half. And you could see Rodgers starting to become one unhappy camper the longer it took to get to the LOS. Game Balls: Mike Pettine. Mad or genius, or Mad Genius. I joked about him going to one DL and some combo of 4 LB/hybrid and 6DB earlier this year. And he goes and does it in the second half. Ha Ha Ha...... (I was looking for Darth Capers in the stands, didn't see him... :-) Seriously, Pettine believes that the new rules are forcing defenses to get longer, lighter and quicker, and that is the only way to win match up football the NFL craves. Packer GM Gute believes, and that is all that really counts. (Think I'm kidding. Outside of Kenny Clarke, every lineman is between 6 feet and 6-4 and around 280-305. That's a pretty light group)

In addition to the spectacular day running and receiving, Jones threw in a really nice blitz pickup. He made an impact in all three phases, run, catch, block.

All of that in less than half the offensive snaps. Maybe if they get his workload above the 50% mark, they can work in a HB option pass.
